From The Editor’s Desk. It’s hard to believe it’s March already! With the mild temperatures, it seems like we barely had a winter at all. Hey, I’m not complaining though. We have lots of exciting things happening here at the Gazette this spring; the biggest being the Carbon County Home, Garden and Business Expo in Jim Thorpe on April 28 & 29 (check out the ad on page 46). We’re growing in Carbon County and reaching more readers, which is great for local businesses and allows us to bring you even more local news and events. We hope you all can make it out to the Expo and say hello. It’s really a great event for businesses and consumers. We also have our Best Restaurant poll up and running and are already seeing a big response. If you’re a foodie or just enjoy grabbing a bite at one of our many great local establishments please show your support and either mail in the coupon to enter the gift certificate drawing or friend us on Facebook and vote online. In this issue we have continuing sports coverage from our writer Tyler Trumbauer who has also become a regular contributor on our Facebook wall keeping everyone updated on sports happenings.

Protecting Yourself Year-Round: Why Spring Sports Safety is a Must! As winter turns into spring and temperatures increase, so does the amount of time that children spend outdoors playing spring sports. This means that the number of injuries to children can also increase. Each year, more than 30 million children participate in sports in the United States and more than 3.5 million children ages 14 and under are treated for sports injuries. While collision and contact sports are associated with higher rates of injury, injuries from individual sports tend to be more severe. In team sports, most injuries - 62 percent - occur during practices, not games. "The most common types of sport-related injuries in children are sprains (mostly ankle), muscle strains, bone or growth plate injuries, repetitive motion injuries, and heat-related illness." "When we think of sports injuries, we tend to think of dramatic tackles or falls - such as the plays you often see on highlight reels, but young athletes are also at risk of injuries," says Rene Hopkins, Coordinator of Safe Kids East Central. "If your coach recommends certain types of warmups, it's not just to make you a better athlete - it will help keep you from getting hurt." Safe Kids East Central recommends these precautions for all children playing or practicing any

individual or team sport: Before signing up for a sport, get a general physical exam. Always wear appropriate protective gear for the activity - for practice as well as games - and make sure it's the right size and properly adjusted. Always do your warm-ups and cool-downs. If it's important before and after a game, it's important before and after practice too. Make sure responsible adults know and enforce the safety rules of the sport, are present to provide supervision, and are trained in first aid and CPR. Never "play through" an injury. Get immediate help from a coach or trainer and be sure to mention everything that hurts or aches. All coaches should have a plan for dealing with emergencies. If you're playing outside, wear SPF 15 or higher sunscreen. Follow the rules. In most sports, the rules are based not only on sportsmanship, but safety. Last but not least: "Stay hydrated," says Hopkins. "Drink plenty of water or electrolyte sports drinks before and during the activity, and rest frequently during hot weather. A child can lose up to a quart of sweat during two hours of exercise, and kids get overheated more quickly than adults and cannot cool down as easily."

The Slatington Public Library will host a presentation by Donald Eckhart entitled “Diverse and Sundry Insights to the Civil War.” Mr. Eckhart is the First Sergeant of Co. A. 72nd Pa Vol. Inf., otherwise known as “Baxters Zouaves”, in the North-South Skirmish Association (8 man team competitive target shooting with authentic Civil War Weapons.) The Presentation will take place on Tuesday, March 20th at 7:00 pm. at the Slatington Public Library, 650 Main St. Slatington.

I

f you are a chocolate lover like me, then you simply must try Linda Isaacs’ Guinness Chocolate Cake! As you will likely guess, I’d never paired beer with chocolate cake before, so I didn’t know what to expect when I tried this recipe. To my surprise, the Guinness really enhanced the flavor of the chocolate, giving the cake an unexpected, pleasant taste. The sour cream helps to keep the cake moist, making for a wonderfully decadent dessert. See step-by-step photos of Linda’s Guinness Chocolate Cake and thousands of recipes from other hometown Americans at:

www.justapinch.com/guinnesscake

You’ll also find coupons for the recipe ingredients! Enjoy and remember, use “just a pinch”...

Guinness Chocolate Cake What You Need

• Pour the Guinness into a large, wide saucepan; add the butter – in spoons or slices 3/4 c sour cream – and heat until the butter’s 1 stk unsalted butter (add 2 tbsp melted. Whisk in the cocoa if you’d like) and sugar. 2 eggs • Beat the sour cream with the eggs and vanilla, then pour 1 tbsp pure vanilla extract into the pan; whisk in the 3/4 c unsweetened cocoa flour and baking soda. 2 c all purpose flour • Pour the cake batter into the greased and lined pan and 3 c confectioner’s sugar bake for 45 minutes to an hour. 2 1/2 tsp baking soda 1 c Guinness draft beer

Directions • Preheat the oven to 350°F. Butter and line a 9 inch springform pan.

• When finished baking, leave the cake to cool completely in the pan on a cooling rack. • Slice and enjoy!

Members of the Lehigh Township Historical Society would like someone to identify the item pictured which was donated to the society by one of its members. This item has raised the curiosity of many visitors at the historical centre. The item is a rectangular black metal case measuring 7 1/2" x 3 3/8" x 1 1/4": with a lever to push down and a bracket which can be attached to something. When the lever is pushed down, out springs a red left hand. We have had fun with this gadget and many have conjectured what this object was used for but we would like YOU to let us know your thoughts.

Lehigh Career & Technical Institute students Jonathan Ciallella and Branden Papay won the Greater Lehigh Valley Auto Dealers Association (GLVADA) Automotive Technology Competition held Saturday (Feb. 18) at Northampton County Community College. Schnecksville-based LCTI placed first out of seven teams representing schools in the Lehigh Valley and New Jersey. Ciallella is a senior at Parkland High School and Papay is a senior at Northern Lehigh. Both students received scholarships from various postsecondary schools totaling in excess of $30,000. The students are now qualified for the National Automotive Technology Competition, sponsored by the Greater New York Auto Dealers Association, to be held in New York City at the Jacob Javits Center April 9-11. “We are proud of what these two young men have accomplished in their time at LCTI,” said Automotive Technology instructor Michael Bernadyn, one of three instructors at the program at LCTI, accompanied by Richard Sikora and Gary Nothstein. “We want to wish them the best of luck and success in New York City.” LCTI now owns back-to-back victories in the GLVADA Automotive Technology Competition and has represented the Lehigh Valley in New

Local History Collection at Northampton Area Public Library

The Northampton Area Public Library has a collection of books and pamphlets concerning Pennsylvania, its cities and towns, churches, families and more. There is something for everyone! There is a collection of Northampton High School yearbooks from 1915 to 2009. The Book of Merit lists Pennsylvania residents who have received the Purple Heart. If you’re a railroad buff you’ll love the books on the Lehigh Valley Railroad. Some of you may remember The Pennsylvania Primer from school and will enjoy looking through it and reminiscing. There are also books on Northampton, Bath, and the various townships in the area. All of the items in the Pennsylvania Collection can only be used in the library but we do have many of the same items in our circulating collection. Stop by the library and learn something interesting about the Lehigh Valley and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Ava’s Story

Ava Lynn Kratochvil the daughter of Carl Kratochvil, Amanda Riepensell and sister to Chase was born a month early on May 11th, 2011. Ava was born with a very rare condition called Megacystis Microcolon Intestinal Hypo peristalsis Syndrome or MMIHS, a smooth muscle disorder. Ava was transported from the Lehigh Valley Hospital to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) just two days after she was born. Just five days old, Ava had her first surgery to place a central

line to ensure she was getting proper nutrition as her condition and anatomy prevent her from orally processing food. Ava has since undergone multiple surgeries to help her process food and correct other complications associated with her condition. Before even reaching her first birthday Ava has had to have a large section of her bowel removed because of a Mal Rotation, or twisted bowel and a Gastrostomy tube placed. She also has an enlarged bladder and had to spend time in the NICU and PICU because of a weakened immune system. On Oct. 24, 2011 an evaluation at CHOP revealed that Ava would need a stomach, pancreas, small intestine and liver transplant. She is currently on the transplant waiting list. Ava was finally sent home on January 19th to be with her family. “It was such an amazing feeling to know I finally had all of my family under one roof. Ava has been doing very well at home,” her mother Amanda said. Ava is currently undergoing therapy and learning how to keep her head up, sit up, and roll over. She will be the first outpatient at CHOP to receive Omegavan, a treatment to protect her liver. “This has been a long road for [our family] and I know it is not over yet,’ her mother said, “my family and I are very thankful for everyone that has reached out to us at this time and we know with everyone’s prayers that are daughter can get through this.” Ava’s friends are holding a fundraiser to help with Ava’s growing medical bills. A Bling Fling for Ava will feature Premier Designs Jewelry and will include games, prizes, a drawing for gift certificates, jewelry and a lot of fun. There will also be a jewelry fashion show. This event is being held at Northwest Children’s Centre, 6301 Rt.309 suite 200, New Tripoli. Please consider joining us for this event or making a purchase, you will be able to accessorize your Easter and summer wardrobes with your purchase and you will be helping Ava. For more information on this event please contact Doris Zellers @ 610-703-8550 or dzjewelrydiva@ gmail.com. Women Leading in Business (NAPSI)—Women have become more vital to America’s prosperity than ever. Without their activity in the U.S. workforce, the economy would shrink by 25 percent. A new book by the vice president and managing director of Apollo Research Institute finds that women’s contributions to management, small business and job creation are at an all-time high. In “Society 3.0: How Technology Is Reshaping Education, Work and Society,” Dr. Tracey WilenDaugenti describes how women’s changing roles and rising rates of educational achievement are helping them master the challenges of career while maintaining work/life balance. A former Silicon Valley executive, Dr. WilenDaugenti says that more women leaders are emerging as societal perceptions evolve. Rising numbers of Americans now believe women should be the major family breadwinner, she writes, and men are assuming a fairer share of home and family duties to compensate. Although women still earn only 77 percent of what their male colleagues earn for comparable work, they bring home 44 percent of U.S. household income. They fared better than men during the Great Recession, however, with only 25 percent

of layoffs affecting female employees. And women-owned firms are responsible for over 23 million jobs and $3 trillion in annual economic impact. Women are finding creative ways to bust stereotypes while launching satisfying careers. Self-employment is one path; 35 percent of all solo entrepreneurs are women, and their numbers are increasing by 23 percent annually. “Women can also stand out by entering traditionally maledominated careers such as science, engineering and computer technology, where salaries happen to be highly competitive,” Dr. Wilen-Daugenti says. Education is helping to close the gap. Women are now earning more higher degrees than men. And more female managers hold bachelor’s or master’s degrees than do male managers. “These trends position women to prevail in a competitive future,” says Dr. Wilen-Daugenti. Trophy Drive What began as a local project to give trophies to children completing chemotherapy has become a national project. Last year, Tracy and Larry Carmen of Bath began collecting unwanted trophies for local children going through Chemotherapy. A goal of 100 trophies for the Outpatient Childrens Center at Lehigh Valley Muhlenberg quickly escalated to over 1,200. “We stopped counting at 1,200”, Tracy Berger-Carmen stated. It also became evident that LVH couldn’t take all the trophies collected. Berger-Carmen started making phone calls around the country to see which hospitals would take trophies to give to their patients. As of right now, A few select hospitals in Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, Florida, Ohio, Arkansas, California, Oregon, Massachusetts as well as Pennsylvania will be taking part in giving trophies to their patients. The list of hospitals continue to grow as more hospitals become aware of the ongoing project. There is a “waiting list” so far of about 800 additional trophies. Once the current supply goes down, or a hospital is looking for certain type or size of trophy for thier patients, people will be called off the list. There will no longer be public trophy drives, if someone wants to give trophies, they need to go on the list. “Right now, we do not

need anymore trophies, what we need now are sponsors and donations to help with shipping costs”, Berger-Carmen added. She indicated it costs $20-$60 depending on sizes and quantity shipped to each hospital. Trophies have been hand delivered to CHOP’s, St. Christophers and Shriner’s Hospital in Philadelpia as well as Hershey Medical Center and Lehigh Valley Hospital. New nameplates are donated and printed by Palmer Trophy in Easton. Monetary donations for shipping can be mailed to PO Box 13, Bath PA 18014, dropped off at The Town & Country Gazette office 4685 Lehigh Drive, Walnutport PA 18088 or dropped off at First Star Bank 358 South Walnut Street, Bath, PA 18014 . Businesses or non- profit organizations interested in printing shipping labels or “adopting a hospital”, should call Tracy Berger-Carmen directly at (610)504-9387. Updates and announcements on the trophy drive can be seen on Facebook under “Trophy Drive”.

Keep the Momentum! One Sunday after worship service a feisty 4-year old boy asked if he could ring the church bell in the belfry. I handed him the heavy rope which hung down from the ceiling. With all his might he pulled and pulled but to no avail. He pleaded, “Pastor Brian, can you ring the bell?” With one hand I gave the rope a jerk. Nothing! With two hands I gave another pull. Again, nothing happened! Determined not to disappoint the young lad, and myself, I reached up as high as could on the rope and applied by entire weight in a might downward pull. Nothing happened!! After watching my struggle, a church elder offered advice. “Pastor, you must keep pulling repeatedly until the bell overcomes its rest and begins rocking. Eventually, when the bell gains enough momentum, it will hit against the striker.” Finally, the bell resounded with a grand peal, satisfying both the lad and myself! I think the same is true of our faith. Like ringing the church bell, our prayers and good deeds must be steady and constant. A single pull will not suffice. Using strength and force will not work. Furthermore, our faith and works must be in harmony with the characteristics of God. Even if we perceive no immediate response, just keep the momentum and your faith will ring out! Pastor Brian Haas, Christ UCC, Walnutport

Northern Lehigh Historical Society Open Letter from Ted Kistler

Dear Friend of the NLHS, The Northern Lehigh Historical Society will meet on Wednesday, April 25 at the Slatington Trailhead Pavilion, located at Main & Railroad Sts. We will open with a business meeting at 7:00 followed by a program about the Pavilion, including construction status and history of the site. We will be under roof, so the meeting will be rain or shine. Please bring your own lawn chair. We had a very productive 2011. Work on the Slate Heritage Trail continued, with grading and surface preparation being done in Washington Township, continued landscaping of the gardens at the Bed Bug Cave, and the construction of a pavilion at the east entrance of the Trout Run Covered Bridge. The Gathering 2011 was impacted by rainy weather but we are starting to plan for Gathering 2012. NLHS projects for 2012-2013 include further development and improvements of the area around the Covered Bridge, including a roof over the stage, grading and finishing of the grounds around the pavilion, and construction of a parking lot. NLHS events scheduled at this time for 2012 include; First Thursday of the month, planning meeting for “The Gathering”. We can use help.

Call 610-760-9281 or e-mail nlhs101@hotmail.com for details. Saturday, October 6, “The Gathering”, our ninth annual festival along the Slate Heritage Trail. This year’s event is in the early planning stages. We plan to start at 12:00 noon and go until dark, closing with a fireworks finale. Details will be announced over the summer. We need your help, support and ideas! Be an active member of the NLHS as we do our part to make the Northern Lehigh area a community we can all be proud of. Notification of future meetings and event announcements will be by letter, e-mail and announcements in the Gazette. Sincerely, Ted Kistler, President Note: New members and ideas are always welcome, anyone interested in joining NLHS can contact a current member or join us at an upcoming meeting. A reminder for current members; dues for 2012 are now being accepted.

Looking for Walkers and Riders in Moore Twp.

The Lehigh Township Rails to Trails organization would like to extend an invitation to join our group to those residents of Moore Township who enjoy walking and riding on local rail-trails. Our goal is to develop a trail running across our township. At the west end it will join with trails in Walnutport and Slatington. At the east end it could join with trails in Moore Township. We invite interested persons to attend one of our meetings. They are held the third Wednesday of each month at the municipal building on Municipal Drive in Lehigh Township. In many areas, a number of municipalities join forces to develop a system of trails. For example, the Ironton Rail-Trail is one such local trail that has been very successful. It would be wonderful if we could develop a trail such as theirs. Additional information can be obtained by contacting Meg at 610 760-1117, mschell@yahoo. com, or by visiting our website, ltrt.org.

March 10, 1955 An Indian Story: A certain Jacob Kohler built a log cabin on the east side of the Lehigh River near Egypt about 1730, where an Indian had already cleared some land. The Indian had a falling out with the other Native Americans in that area and moved away to live by himself. Kohler and his family and the Indian and his family were neighbors and become very good friends. The Indian’s children and Kohler’s children often played with each other; but one time an accident happened. When they were playing one time, one of Kohler’s children had accidentally cut off a finger of one of the Indian girls. His family brought Kohler home from the field where he was working and he was very frightened that this may create trouble between him and the Indian. He thought real hard, what he could do to keep peace. The Native American family did not have any cows, but they all liked milk very much. Kohler took a full pot of milk over and gave it to them. That kept the peace between them and the children once again played with each other. What is a ‘Retschbewwie’? That is a word that one does not hear so often anymore. [‘Tattletale’, she gives the answer in a later issue-Translator.] The third ‘Vesammle Fescht an der Bushkill’ will be held on the 29th of April in Tatamy Fire Hall at 7 pm. We will again have good food and a good program. The board met last Wednesday evening to lay out the plans, so this will again be a substantial time. All the ticket holders from last year will again get a notice to purchase their tickets, but the money must be in by April 1st. Those who do not, loose there chance for tickets and we will start taking names from the waiting list. Others that were not there yet, who would like to attend, must give us their name to be put on the list, and when we have a place for them, they will be phoned. “Not shooting is also the same as missing the target.” “Many go out to get wool and come home shorn.” (Does this apply to gamblers?)

A new business was opening and one of the owner”s friends wanted to send flowers for the occasion. They arrived at the new business site and the owner read the card; it said “Rest in Peace”. The owner was angry and called the florist to complain. After he had told the florist of the obvious mistake and how angry he was, the florist said. “Sir, I”m really sorry for the mistake, but rather than getting angry you should imagine this: somewhere there is a funeral taking place today, and they have flowers with a note saying, “Congratulations on your new location!”

- Spring Tanning Tips Spring is just around the corner and a lot of people are starting to think about getting that jump on their summer glow. Just make sure you are being responsible about how you are getting your spring color! Tan versus Spray Tan… while Spray Tanning gives you that wonderful color instantly, it will not build up your skin to protect you from burns. This option is perfect if you are not going on vacation to a tropical locale or just need a pick me up for a special event. Make sure that you talk to your salon preforming the spay tan and ask many questions about how is the solution applied,

how long it will last, and showering procedures afterwards. You should also know what kind of solution they are using, natural or chemical. They make a big difference in the color you receive. If you are going to tan to get your spring color so you are ready for sun come summer, follow these simple guidelines to maximize your tan and time. First make sure you are properly protecting your eyes, you only get one pair, wear goggles or wink-ease while tanning. It’s a MUST! Start early, go steady and slow. Building your tan gradually will help your skin stay moisturized and your skin will actually hold its color longer. Protect your lips! The skin on your lips is much thinner than the rest of your body; use your favorite lip balm to make sure they stay kissably soft and protected. I can’t stress this enough, MOISTURIZE! Make sure you are moisturizing your skin, it makes all the difference. You don’t have to tan every day to get great color. Your skin builds color for the three days following first exposure. This means if you tan every other day, your skin doesn’t dry out as much AND you are still maximizing on pigmentation building in your skin. Everything in moderation! So think about your goals and follow the above tips for a great jump in to summer!

Local Couple Honored

Mr. Joseph and Mrs. Isa Bechtel with kindergarten class singing them an original song. On Wed, Feb 1st, Assumption BVM, Slatington honored the service of Joseph and Elizabeth Bechtel as part of Parents School Month and Catholic Schools Week. Students were invited to attend morning Mass and the reception that followed. The message to the children and parishioner's was on people of service and how important they are to our community. The Bechtels were recognized for over 50 years of service to the Slatington area, Assumption parish and St. John Neumann Regional School. Joe and Isa have served the parish and all eight of their children attended Catholic schools and colleges. Thirteen of their 22 grandchildren also attended Catholic school. “It is the way we were raised. Everything revolved around the church, school and the fire company.” Mrs. Bechtel added. Elizabeth is involved not only with the church and school but is also active in the Womans Club of Slatington, the America Cancer Society and the Alter and Rosary Club. Joe Bechtel moved his young family to Slatington and opened his pharmacy in 1961. The Bechtel's received a special certificate from

Sister Virginia Stephanie, the principal of St. John Neumann's. Additionally, the school students provided them with gifts and a special, original song, was performed by the kindergarten class to Joseph and Isa. Father Grembocki presented them with a certificate of "Thanks" for service at the church and Walter Niedermeyer, Slatington's Mayor, presented a proclamation for service to the community. Mike Burke, president of the SJNRS Advisory Board stated "At this time, when parents have multiple choices for their children's education, we are proud to honor the Bechtel's and the generations of Catholic Education they have supported." St. John Neumann Regional School has two campuses, one in Slatington which serves K-3rd grades and another in Palmerton (adjacent to Sacred Heart Parish) which teaches 4-8 grades.

Extra Point by Tyler Trumbauer

NL Renovating Bulldog Stadium

On February 13 the school board for Northern Lehigh School District voted unanimously for the following upgrades to Bulldog Stadium: Install a field turf surface, a new scoreboard and a security camera system. All three of these renovations will cost the district $770,000. They were seen as a necessity and were backed completely by all school board members. The turf surface was the biggest of the three projects. After torrential rain during a few football games last season, the field at the stadium was left in horrible condition. The school dumped sand on the field in an effort to soak up the moisture, but with the drainage problems the field was still severely damaged. This new surface will be designed to host football, field hockey and boys and girls soccer games. Now that more athletic teams will utilize the facilities, the name of the stadium will be changed from Bulldog Stadium to Bulldog Athletic Stadium.

Page 49

The turf is the most expensive of the three as it will run the school $699,000. Although that figure is very large, most people in the NL athletic community are supporting the expense. Junior football standout, Caleb Johnson told me that he is all for it. On top of the aforementioned high school level sports, the youth football program will also be playing more games in the stadium. The additional sports action excites head football coach, Joe Tout. “...The school district came to the conclusion that it was in the best interest to look at renovating the field...I believe that this project did make sense [as it is] allowing multiple sports to utilize the field.” Continued on Page 50

Extra Point Cont. Continued from Page 49 The new scoreboard will cost $50,000 and is capable of keeping score for the new sports the stadium will host. The security camera system will cost $20,000. It is a smart idea to heighten security at the stadium now that it will see more traffic and the field is very expensive. Construction will begin around May 21, 2012 and should conclude in early to mid-July. That time frame means the new stadium will be ready for the huge workload it will have ahead of it. The fall of 2012 will have more sports in the Colonial League than last season as girls soccer will be moving to the fall. With that transition, all levels of football, boys and girls soccer and all levels of field hockey will be playing on the new surface. I personally love the new construction and expect it to increase the level of play as field conditions typically played a big factor at Northern Lehigh home games.

District 11 Playoff Capsules

After the first few rounds of the District 11 playoffs, few teams in the Gazette’s coverage area are still in contention. These teams have worked hard through the season to get to this big stage. With a district title in sight, let’s take a look at the teams that are still going for the gold. Girls Basketball Northern Lehigh: The lady Bulldogs are the #5 seed in the AA level. They beat the #4 seed, Salisbury, to advance this far in districts. On Tuesday, February 28, they will take on the #1 seed, Pine Grove. By the time of publishing, that game would have already been played. If the lady Dawgs win they will play the winner of Notre Dame Green Pond and Minersville for the District 11 AA girls title. I asked sophomore starting shooting guard, Kelsey Follweiler, what it will take to beat Pine Grove and eventually take the title,“We need to play together and make the other team play our game instead of us playing theirs. If we play good defense and keep our turnovers to a minimum, we will always be in the game.” West Point bound Aimee Oertner will play a big part in this match-up. If she can stay out of foul trouble and stay on the floor, the lady Bulldogs should have a great shot at taking it all. Boys Basketball Northern Lehigh: NLfans are not just rooting for their ladies this week, they are rooting for the guys too as they are still in the hunt for a District 11 AAA title. On Tuesday, February 28, these boys will be

doing battle with the #5 seed, the Wilson Warriors. Tyler Dibilio, a sophomore starting shooting guard for the #1 seeded Bulldogs, told me that the team will need to be mentally and physically prepared. He also assures me that playing smart and playing strong from the beginning will be a big key to their hopeful success. That game will be played before publishing, but if the Bulldogs triumph over the Warriors, they earn the right to play either Central Catholic or North Schuylkill. The Bulldogs have yet to play a game in districts this postseason as earning the top seed has given them some byes, but that luxury could hurt them. If they begin the game struggling, reminiscent to their game against Bangor in the league playoffs, they might not be able to climb back to the top. Parkland: Head coach Andy Stephens and his team has had a long road to the semi-finals in the AAAA level. Being the #5 seed has made them win two games to get to this point. Breezing through their opening round game, they sweated out a victory over Freedom last weekend. The Trojans will play the #1 seed, Emmaus, on Wednesday, February 29 at Freedom beginning at 7:30pm. This team started out their season strong back in November and has continued their dominance the whole way in to late February. They will need to play to the best of their ability to beat the surging Hornets. Austin Beidelman and Zach Muhr will need to be big contributors in Parkland wants to advance to the finals.

District 11 Duals’ Results

Over the last weekend in February, District 11 was not only conducting some playoff basketball games, they also were holding wrestling duals. The duals were in the AA and AAA levels and they were held at Liberty High School. We had some winners that were from schools in the Gazette coverage area. Below are listed their names and weight classes. Congratulations to them all! AA Level: Michael Ortiz, Northwestern, 152 lbs; Levi Veppert, Northwestern, 182 lbs. AAA Level: Ethan Lizak, Parkland, 106 lbs; Jason Stephen, Northampton, 138 lbs; Cole Sheptock, Northampton, 152 lbs; Nezar Haddad, Parkland, 170 lbs. extrapoint@townandcountrygazette.com Twitter: @tylertrumbauer Facebook updates: Town & Country Gazette

SAVE UP TO 20% OF YOUR HEAT! If you have a fireplace in your home, 20% of your home’s heat can be lost up the flue! Do a simple candle test… light a candle and SLOWLY go around the edge of your fireplace opening – or the edge of the fireplace doors, for those homeowners with doors. See what happens to the flame. From the midpoint and up across the top, the flame will move slightly TOWARD the fireplace. This shows the heat leaving your house. At the bottom of the fireplace, the flame will move towards your room. This is the COLD AIR coming down the backside of the flue and heading straight into your cozy warm home! The Top Sealing Damper was originally invented as a replacement damper for rusted-out heatilator fireplace dampers. We have installed 900+ top-mount dampers, 300 as replacement dampers and 600 on masonry fireplaces. They save energy, reduce cold air drafts, make the room quieter, and make starting a fire easier because of the warm column of air that has replaced the standard cold, wet column of air that is normally in your flue.

This well constructed, superbly eningeered damper eliminates 90% of the winter heat and summer cooling loss that leaks past your current damper. It also eliminates downdrafts and keeps moisture and animals out of your chimney and home. Moisture in your chimney causes unwelcome odors and leads to deterioration of bricks and mortar. The Lyemance Top-Sealing Damper works year round to protect your chimney. That’s why thousands are installed each year.

• Easy to operate • Seals in warmth and energy • Stops animals from entering your home • Seals out moisture to extend chimney life • Stops downdrafts • Helps prevent chimney odors

Lyemance energysaving dampers are available only from chimney professionals

Professionals always sell the sturdiest, most durable, and most effective products available – the ones you can’t find in your local stores. Why? They stake their reputation on

what they sell. Lyemance Dampers are only sold through professionals because it takes a professional to properly size and install a Lyemance Damper. Once installed, it’s easy as pie to use – with a simple tug on the handle, it’s open and with another tug, it’s closed. Why wait? Begin saving energy and increase your comfort now. Don’t waste another dollar in energy loss – begin your long friendship with Lyemance, the leader in top-sealing dampers.
