From the Publisher’s Desk
Joe Korba is our annual
This home improvement edition and I couldn’t be prouder to feature Danielle Tepper’s article on Habitat for Humanity in this issue (page 14). It’s awesome to see people doing such great work in our communities and it’s our honor to help share some good news with all of you from time to time. When we do our editorial calendar for the following year every autumn, we always optimistically schedule our home improvement issue for the Gazette and our home and garden supplement for our sister paper, The Home News, to run in March—and we are almost always going to print with them while there is still snow and ice on the ground. I hope you all look at this issue as a harbinger of better weather ahead; March 20 is the first official day of spring! On the cover: A volunteer crew of HMK Insurance employees help to build a home South Bethlehem as Partial House Sponsors for their 100th anniversary in July of 2014. B L U E MOU N TAI N

Meet the Staff What is a dream “feature” for your future home? Joe Korba, Associate Publisher: I don’t just want a library, I need a library for all of the books I’ve hoarded over the years. A gym would be nice as well, so I could finally get my treadmill out of the living room. Danielle Tepper, Editor: I also salivate at the thought of a huge, wondrous library. And I’ve always wanted a finished attic. Most people would say basement, but finished attics just seem fun to me. It would probably make a great playroom or home theater. Catherine Stroh, Publishing Assistant: I have many dreams about a future home. Among them are to live in a hobbit house (like in Lord of the Rings), a very elaborate library that requires a secret passage to enter—or any secret passageways for that matter—a deluxe bathroom where the bathtub requires steps to get into, and lots of windows, including a bay windowsill to sit upon and read all my books from my amazing library. Tony Pisco, Art Director: It’s not that fancy, but I would like a garage. I always had one growing up, but then the house we bought in 2008 didn’t have one. So cold in the morning … Alice Wanamaker, Editorial Assistant: I always wanted a sunroom with a retractable roof. I think it would be cool to enjoy it in the winter and of course in the summer. Almost like a convertible room. Donna Bachman, Accounting Manager: Future island dream home—always good to dream of an adventure!

Blue Mountain’s Best Habitat for Humanity Lehigh Valley
By Danielle S. Tepper As told by Melissa Siegfried, Director of Resource Development “We don’t give houses away.” Of the possible misconceptions to have about Habitat for Humanity, Melissa Siegfried, Director of Resource Development for the Lehigh Valley affiliate, says this one may be the most damaging to their vision of “a world where everyone has a decent place to live.” (www.habitatlv.org) “We offer the opportunity for families to get a hand-up, not a handout. That’s important,” Siegfried says. “A lot of people think we build houses and give them away, but the people always make a huge investment. It’s not easy.” The Lehigh Valley affiliate, located in Allentown, was founded in 1989 as a way to help with the local housing crisis. “Speaking to what we know currently, we’re really investing in our neighborhood revitalization,” said Siegfried. “It’s a new way for us to serve low-income families with an expansion of housing services and products.”

Siegfried herself started as a volunteer in October of 2012. Born and raised in Allentown, she knew the reality of substandard housing: “For me personally, our vision that everyone has a decent place to live is my motivation. I know what it’s like to live in a bad house with mold and asthma and bad neighborhoods and being afraid and how distracting that is and how that leads to other bad things.” “Healthy, affordable housing is the foundation for opportunity and for healthy, fulfilled lives and that’s what keeps me coming in, to fight for that,” she continued. “I walked in the door having no knowledge of building or construction. I just offered my services and I was quickly put to work.” She found a permanent home in February of 2013. As Neighborhood revitalization is growing among affiliates, Director of Resource Development, she works with the with approximately 250 of them now focusing on it, which fundraising, donations of materials, corporate sponsorships, Siegfried says means “Habitat is taking more of a listening team-builders for volunteers, grant-writing, and oversees posture in the community to focus on their needs.” There the neighborhood revitalization and entire volunteer are 1500 affiliates around the world and 49 in Pennsylvania, program. all of which globally fight poverty housing. “As most people in nonprofits do, we all wear many, many “It kind of works like a franchise; we are each an affiliate hats,” she laughed. “A typical work day can sometimes feel of Habitat International and we carry out the global like you go all the way around the world and back.” mission locally,” explained Siegfried. “We don’t receive any The Lehigh Valley Habitat affiliate celebrated its 25th financial funding from International; each affiliate stands anniversary of serving the Valley in 2014 and reached some alone to support their community based on the funding and significant milestones last year. help we get back from that community.” They dedicated their 100th home in March of 2014 Most affiliates, like Lehigh Valley, are volunteer-driven. and also had a group of 12 volunteers raise all the funding to allow for “ReStores provide an environmentally and a global village socially responsible way to keep good, reusable build in Costa Rica. materials out of landfills. Fundraising is a huge component of how Habitat is able to operate. Throughout the year, they host three signature events: A Toast to Hope, “She Nailed It” Luncheon, and a Polar Plunge. The Toast to Hope is their signature event, which is a wine and food tasting and silent auction, typically held in November. They held their 10th annual in 2014. “She Nailed It” is part of their Women Build initiative. This year will be their third. “We recruit teams of four to fundraise $250 per person or $1,000 per team,” explained Siegfried. “It’s a program that comes from International designed to recruit, educate, and inspire women to break stereotypes.” Their “Plunge For A Purpose” has been rescheduled to April two years in a row due to Dutch Springs being completely frozen, but Siegfried said that doesn’t deter plungers from attending. They have around 90 signed up so far and that number keeps growing. Anyone can participate in these events, and what’s more, anyone can donate or volunteer for Habitat, no experience necessary. “Some people think you have to know your way around a hammer and nails, but there are other ways to help,” said Siegfried. “Just call us and we’ll help you find the right fit.” Every little bit counts. The Habitat LV staff is small, but mighty. There are only 14 total employees, five of which are part-time. “The volunteers are what make it happen,” said Siegfried. In 2014, there were 4,600 volunteer events in the Lehigh Valley with the help of 667 volunteers. Numbers like that have quite the impact throughout neighborhoods in need. “We target specific neighborhoods,” said Siegfried. “It’s a way for us to have a greater impact from one house and one family at a time to really focusing on full neighborhoods and working on collaborating with other community partners to come together. We see ourselves as a spoke and a wheel for community development.” Habitat undoubtedly offers life-changing work to its web of workers as well as life-changing moments to deserving families. Each home gets a dedication ceremony upon completion and Siegfried says she’s shed a tear at almost every one. “It’s a chance for the families to thank everyone who’s been involved. Each family is special and unique and we get the chance to get to know them,” said Siegfried. One family in particular stands out in her mind: “This past year, there was a dedication for an African refugee family and they had family members come from Africa to reunite with them here,” she explained. “During part of the dedication, the family members broke out into song. was just the most moving, spiritual moment that they were singing this African song together in harmony. It was very emotional.” Siegfried hopes people who aren’t as familiar with Habitat’s process will recognize that it’s “a complex model. The families who receive homes make a huge investment and commitment to being homeowners.” [Please see our sidebar for a breakdown of the complete procedure.] “Also, if you want to keep your donation local, donate directly to us,” she said. “We don’t get financial support from International, so if you want your money to go to the Valley, keep it in the Valley.” “And we welcome everybody,” she added, smiling. So how does Habitat work? Director of Resource Development for the Lehigh
Valley Habitat affiliate Melissa Siegfried breaks down the process from application to homeownership: Habitat hosts an orientation once or twice a year depending on where we’re building and the funding that we have for it. It’s open to anybody who is interested in learning about it to come and hear about expectations and requirements and what to do to become accepted as a “partner family.” Three major criteria for qualification: 1. The family has to have a need for safety/ affordable housing. (Low-income families between 35-55% of the area median income.) They have to display that need. 2. They have to have the ability to accept financial responsibility. They must be in a position to make a down payment at closing and pay back a 0% interest mortgage to Habitat. We are the mortgage originators and we collect on all our houses. 3. They must have a willingness to partner. We call them partner families because it is a true partnership. Per adult, each one puts in 250 sweat equity hours building theirs or others’ houses or at the ReStore. After orientation, if someone meets all those requirements and they submit a full application by deadline, it goes to a family selection committee which is a volunteer group led by our family services manager to look over all the criteria that comes down from Habitat International. Vetting begins with that committee; they meet with the families through home visits, they check backgrounds, credit scores, and work history. Once they are deemed to be qualified families, it goes to our board to be reviewed and selected, and then they become one of our partner families. At that point, they start getting their hours in and meet with us once a month to ask questions and understand where they are in the process. They’re assigned their own mentor who is with them throughout the process. The entire process takes 18-24 months from first application to completion of the home. That time frame really depends on the families and how quickly they get their hours in. There are minimums they must meet each month. Some get it done faster than others. It’s definitely not an easy process; it requires a lot of planning on the family’s part.

Apple Crunch Pupcakes

Recipe courtesy of lolathepitty.com.
Ingredients
• 2 cups water • ¼ cup applesauce • ¼ tsp vanilla extract • 1 egg • 4 tbsp honey • 4 cup whole wheat flour • 1 tbsp baking powder • 1 chopped apple
Pup approved!
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350°F. In a large bowl, mix water, applesauce, vanilla, egg, and honey together with a whisk. Combine whole wheat flour and baking powder and stir into wet ingredients. Fold in chopped apples. Spoon mixture into greased baking pan. Bake for 35 minutes. Are you obsessed with your dog just like me? Do you care about what they eat and the ingredients in their food? Do all the chemicals and ingredients that you can’t even pronounce on the back of their food concern you? I like the idea of homemade dog treats specifically for that reason—you know exactly what that treat is made of. These were my first shot at a homemade treat for dogs; they were extremely quick and easy. I put in a little bit less than the four cups of flour; it was just so much flour! I also ended up baking mine for about 11 minutes less than the directions call for. My picture is definitely not as nice as the one in the original recipe, but that’s the beauty of dog treats ... they don’t care!

ne of the cool things about living in an old farmhouse from the 1800s is that there are so many interesting architectural design elements that are not used in homes today. In my house, there is a narrow hidden stairway up to the back bedroom. The stairway is closed off with a door, but allows quick access to and from the “master bedroom” to the kitchen. I really love the ease of access to the upstairs from either end of the house. Plus, the small steps that lead up to it open to reveal rearranged my bedroom a little cubbyhole, which is possibly (or rather, emptied it would be my favorite feature. —AW more accurate) before I left for college and when I came back for spring break my sophomore year, my dad had finally completed constructing a beautiful custommade and hand-crafted bookcase for the little nook by the door. (My dad’s a wizard. His handiwork was featured on the cover of our Home Improvement issue last year). I am absolutely in love with it and will miss it dearly when I eventually move out. —DT

If you are planning a home renovation, remember to find ways to recycle the older pieces you are replacing. Even if you cannot use old kitchen cabinets, someone else might have the perfect place for them. Many websites exist to help you find a new home for your previously-loved items like freecycle.org, craigslist.org, or Habitat for Humanity ReStore locations. See page 46 for a fresh idea on repurposing old furniture!

Local Restaurant & Charity Partner To Help Families
[P] L-R: Denise Macalush, Chris Hankee, Bill Hankee, Jim Macalush, and Katie Macalush. Submitted by BILL HANKEE Since 2013, Katie’s Macalush Family Restaurant has been receiving donations from customers to support the Krysta Hankee Memorial Fund in its effort to provide gas gift cards to families. The Giant Gas Gift Cards support families who must travel for ongoing specialized medical care. Katie’s has a red container at the check-out area all year long where customers can deposit change or bills to support the gas card program. During the month of August, the Macalush Family Restaurant sponsors “Katie’s Gas Card Round-Up” where families have the opportunity to enjoy a wonderful meal and great hospitality. Guests also are asked to make a donation of any amount and place their name or a message on a pin-up to be taped to the wall for all to see. The
“Gas Card Round Up” and the small red bucket have produced enough money to provide over 10,000 miles of driving for families in need. The Krysta Hankee Memorial Fund Giant Gas Card Program has generated over 377,000 miles to support families through several health care providers. The program is funded through many local businesses, individuals, and events. Bill, Chris, and Kyle Hankee of the Krysta Hankee Memorial Fund are humbled by the generosity they have witnessed in our community. They are very proud of Katie’s customers for the effort they are putting forth to help strangers. The Hankee Family knows this giving nature has always existed in our area but have felt it personally since the loss of Krysta in 2007.

Master Gardener Training Submitted by KELLY BOND
The Penn State Extension Master Gardener program in Lehigh and Northampton Counties will be training a new class of volunteers this fall. The program provides 40 hours of horticultural training for citizens that have an interest in gardening, a willingness to learn more, and a strong desire to make a difference in the community. The new training program will begin the week of August 18 and continue on subsequent Tuesdays from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. through mid-December. Classes will be split between the Lehigh and Northampton County Cooperative Extension offices in Dorneyville and outside Nazareth. After training, volunteers are able to engage in a number of projects in the Lehigh Valley to promote gardenbased education for adults and children. Examples of gardening projects and programs include designing and installing demonstration pollinator gardens, working in community gardens, and organizing educational workshops that address such topics as composting, invasive plants, and vegetable gardening. Those interested in this volunteer program should call 610- 391-9840 by Friday, March 20 to receive an application packet. An information session will be held Tuesday, May 12 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Penn State Lehigh Valley, 2809 Saucon Valley Road, Center Valley, PA

Maroon 5’s #1 Furry Fan The Adam Levine-driven (and massively popular) Maroon 5 has a huge fan in a Valley native—who’s also a German Shepherd. Shelby of Bethlehem loves singing in the car about as much as the next person, but her jam is the band’s latest hit, “Animals.” Her parents, Christie Jephson and Brian Nicas, caught her howling along with Levine on a car ride and posted it to YouTube. Since Feb. 8, the clip has amassed almost 500,000 views. After being picked up by Time.com and iHeartRadio, Shelby howled herself right into viral internet fame. As originally reported by the Express-Times, the engaged couple is using the buzz to advocate for animal rescue: "When we first brought Shelby home, she was extremely timid and quiet; it was weeks before we even heard her bark. Now, her voice has been heard by hundreds of thousands of people," Jephson said in statement. "Rescuing an animal is saving a life, and Shelby's second chance is certainly worth singing about." redeeming qualities by the end of AMC’s smash hit series, at least Jesse had the decency to show remorse and a desire to leave the biz in his rearview mirror—leaving me cheering when he finally did.
Spike | Buffy the Vampire Slayer Played by James Marsters
Best Bad Boys of TV (continued)
Just in case you missed our last issue, let’s refresh: You gotta love a good bad boy. That quintessential television character always seems two-dimensional on the page until they get fleshed out into living, breathing, brooding boys who don’t want your heart but you’re still compelled to yank it from your chest and give it to them anyway. It’s up to the actors who play them to let their softer side show through just enough to make you love/ hate them and look forward to the next time they grace your screen. I shuffled through my long list of favorite shows in my head and realized that almost every single one had one of those leather jacket-wearing, motorcycle-riding, look-me-in-the-eyes-andswoon kind of guys. So POP is going to be broken into segments and we’re going to explore this topic for the next couple issues. (Because I said so.) Last issue we covered characters from AMC’s megahit The Walking Dead, as well as ‘90s classic Boy Meets World and ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy. Next up:
The baddest bad around, or so Spike was prone to think. He rolled into Sunnydale in the second season as the latest thorn in the slayer’s side and finished the series as her greatest champion. The complete role reversal was a fun journey to watch, especially since William the Bloody was a vamp without a soul and still managed to fall for the one woman who, on more than one occasion, tried to drive a stake through his heart and in so doing, shot an arrow straight through mine. Angel who?
Jess Mariano | Gilmore Girls Played by Milo Ventimiglia
Jesse Pinkman | Breaking Bad Played by Aaron Paul
Jesse broke bad alright, the very instant he decided to let Walter White sweep him up in a blue haze of thug deals and crystal meth production. Jess, the sarcastic, quick-tongued foil to good Gilmore girl Rory, threw viewers into an unfortunate triangle in the second season of the WB’s darling mother/daughter drama. Dreamboat Dean was no match for Jess’ literary witticisms and the way he seemed to just know Rory, better than she even knew herself. He was the only one to pull her out of her I-stole-a-boat funk when he called her out on dating the type of guy they used to mock (lookin’ at you, Huntzberger). His character arc was made all the more poignant when we saw what Rory didn’t—how he so desperately wanted to be the type of man she deserved and just couldn’t find his way to becoming that man until it was too late.

In English we would say, “an electric sharpener.” What things are still developed! Nothing is still better to me than the good old grindstone which I, however, God-punishably hated to turn at home on the farm where my dad wanted to sharpen the scythes, the knives and the like. [Apparently, Florence thought the old fashioned grindstone was still the best way to sharpen knives and the like, iff you were not the one that had to turn the crank handle!] There were many things that needed to be sharpened years ago and everything was sharpened by hand. Speaking of sharpening, there were also the millstones to sharpen. This was a skill in and of itself. Just a short time ago we heard that many

That was also a skill that only the blacksmiths understood well. Speaking now of grinding, yes, there were so many things that were always ground at home. We just heard that many people always ground bones for chicken feed. I know nothing about that, but if one of you does, please be so kind and let me know. What type of grinding machine did they have to do that? Does anyone have such a grinding machine? I wonder if such a machine often needed to be sharpened. One would think so. Was the ground bones feed able to make the chickens lay better or had it just kept them healthy? I bet if we could look around the old sheds on the farms, that such things would be found. Is this just old trivia? [No], gold to the people growing up today, not money in the pocket, but wealth in their learning. [Answers to Florence’s questions about grinding bones for chicken feed can be found on the internet at: www.wikihow.com/Grind-Bones. Use a meat grinder to grind the bones. (They were normally used for preparing hamburger or sausage meat.) Use only soft pliable bones from poultry, rabbits or rodents, and do not use any thicker than your thumb. Regarding the benefits of ground bone feed: it would provide needed calcium for the chicken’s health and also enhance it egg-laying ability, since calcium is required in egg shell formation.] -Larry Gradwohl

A Garden of Furniture – Dresser Planter
With all of the cold weather we have been having, thinking about spring and planting season is one thing that has helped get me through one of the coldest winters in my memory bank. I love this idea of recycling unwanted furniture outside in the garden. No, I am not talking about putting your old hopper outside and filling it with plants, but why not a dresser? It’s spacious, classy, and a great way to save that furniture from the dumpster or fire pit, at least for a few more years.
Step 1: You’ll want to get a dresser ready and in place. If you don’t have a dresser in your house, finding one isn’t that difficult. A quick search for “dresser” with a $20 limit on Craigslist landed me a number of options. Step 2: You may want to paint your dresser to make it stand out or blend in depending on your garden style. If you choose to paint, using an outdoor variety will help the furniture last a bit longer. Remember, your planter will now be battling the weather! Step 3: Line the drawers with trash bags or plastic sheeting. Again, your planter is now going to be sitting outside in all weather and

Step 5: It’s now time to fill the drawers with potting soil or dirt and position them slightly open in a tiered pattern. Once you have your plants in place, you won’t want to move them around too much, so make sure your drawers are just the way you want them. Step 6: Let’s plant! Some great options are colorful plants like morning glories, geraniums, hanging plants, and herbs. [Completed images with caption: Courtesy of www. goodhousekeeping.com.] Enjoy a few seasons with a unique garden planter that is sure to be a conversation piece! will last a while longer with a bit of protection. The plastic will also help hold in some of the moisture when you water your plants. Do you have an item (or a collection of Step 4: At this point, you will want to place items) that you are looking to recycle? bricks in the back of your dresser as well as Send a picture of your products over toward the back of the drawers to help balance and I just might use them in a future the weight. The dressers will become frontproject! Pictures should be emailed to heavy as they are filled with dirt. Three or four awanamaker@townandcountrygazette. bricks per drawer will help. This will also help com. Please be sure to include your name you use less potting soil as you fill the drawers and contact info. with bricks.
