INSIDE THIS ISSUE

FROM THE PUBLISHER’S DESK Joe Korba People all over the country will be celebrating Memorial Day on May 30. For many, it is the unofficial start of summer and means barbecues and swimming (probably not for people in this area if the weather stays like this though). And although I think we’ve gotten a little better as citizens honoring the men and women who fight for this country and for us every single day, we still have a long, long way to go. The Veteran’s Affairs scandals and the way we treat—or not treat—mental health problems like PTSD are woeful. Hopefully, one day that won’t be an issue. I’d like to personally thank the men and women who fight and the families of those who made the greatest sacrifice. Those are the people we should be thinking about on Memorial Day. As always, enjoy this edition.

Give Blood With The Red Cross During Trauma Awareness Month Submitted by BETH TOLL

During Trauma Awareness Month in May, the American Red Cross urges eligible donors to give blood and help ensure a sufficient supply for patient emergencies. Dennis Weidner knows how critical blood products are in trauma situations. In 1996, part of his left leg was amputated following a farming accident.“Through the surgeries, I received 13 units of blood,” he said. Weidner now gives blood as often as he can. Donors of all blood types are needed this May. Every day, the Red Cross must collect approximately 14,000 blood donations to meet the needs of trauma patients and others with serious medical conditions. Schedule your appointment to give blood by downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting redcrossblood.org, or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). Donors can then also visit redcrossblood.org/ cedarfair to enter to win one of two grand prize packages for four to Knott’s Berry Farm in California or Cedar Point in Ohio.

Upcoming blood donation opportunities: Northampton County Bethlehem 5/25, 1- 6 p.m., Governor Wolf Elementary School, 1920 Butztown Road. Easton 5/27, 2- 7 p.m., Charles Chrin Community Center, 4100 Green Pond Road.

S & G Asphalt Services Recognized As Chamber Business Of The Month Submitted by ALICE WANAMAKER

The Greater Northern Area Chamber of Commerce is proud to annouce S & G Asphalt Services as May Buisness of the Month. S & G Asphalt Services offers high quality seal coating, line striping, excavating, and paving. In 1982, owner Antonio Sorrentino took the bold step of leaving his current employer of several years to branch out and begin his own asphalt buisness. Starting from the bottom with no money or equipment, Antiono worked tirelessly to build his business into what it is today, a 3 million dollar company. S & G Asphalt Services has had several locations in the last 30 years including Ironton, Whitehall, and finally Slatington, where they are currently located. Vincent Sorrentino, seal coating and line striping manager, says, “We are a family oriented business; our employees and customers are all treated like family.” Along with that, the Sorrentinos take the education of their employees very seriously; each year their employees are taken to the National Paving Expo where they get hands-on experience and meet with professionals from all around the United States to learn new skills and techniques. They believe that by keeping their employees educated it will help them to perform beyond expectation and communicate needs with their customers. S & G Asphalt Services is growing at a rapid rate with a total of 2 million square feet of seal coating in 2015 alone. That is a 30% increase from 2014 and a 60% increase from 2013. S & G Asphalt Services is looking forward to growing to be even larger and meet the seal coating, line striping, excavating, and paving needs of the Lehigh Valley. You can contact them at 610-502-0211 or online at www.sgsphalt.com and on Facebook under S & G Asphalt Services.

Moore Township Historical Commission Submitted by KAREN GRUBE

The regular meeting of the Moore Township Historical Commission was held at the municipal building on April 27. An update on the Edelman Schoolhouse was given by Dick Gable. Also, President Charmaine Bartholomew noted that a small group of members met with Thomas Jones, a historic conservationist at the schoolhouse. Mr. Jones is affliated with many historic groups throughout the country. He stated that the commission has a good start on a schoolhouse that still has many original attributes. He would be willing to work with members to list the schoolhouse on a historic registry, if the commission decides to proceed in this manner. The commission is in the process of gathering photos for a pictorial book of Moore Township. The members continue to ask residents for donations of photos to be copied and returned to the owner. The commission has a long list of photos that are needed. The list includes: local gun clubs, Danner's Grove, Birchwood Acres, Topher's (Jolly Joe) Grove, Beersville Pool, Moorestown Grange, Dannersville Hotel, Beersville Hotel, and the village general stores. Also, if you have class photos from a one-room

Sons Of Union Veterans Of The Civil War Memorial Day Services Submitted by JAMES McRELL

Northampton Senior Center News Submitted by KRISTA AMBROSINO

Spring has brought us all out and moving at the Northampton Senior Center! Julie Harhart came to say goodbye as we all wished her well in her future. The Moravian College nursing students are regulars at our center, making seniors an important part of their education. They ended their semester with us by hosting an in-house Health Fair on April 28. It turned out very well with high attendance and many different education stations to visit, finishing the day with a generous raffle. The students from the college will be regular visitors here, doing blood pressures and getting to know our seniors. Moving into May brought music and dancing. Fun was had by all as Jim strummed his guitar and kept us hopping to tunes from the ‘50s and ‘60s. Senior Games are coming up fast on June 3. Training week will be the full week before. We will be sporting our new T-shirts by Studio G in orange and black, of course. Our Dianna did it again as she handcrafted more than 90 colorful flower pins to give to all our ladies for Mother’s Day. Such a talented and generous woman. Many activities are available such as twice weekly exercise, computer skills, Hooks-n-Needles, etc. Area adults 60+ are welcome for social, recreation, and meals. Open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. For more info, contact Krista Ambrosino at 610-262-4977.

Bathtime Blues

Huskies are beautiful dogs, but their owners will warn you—they’re stubborn and very vocal animals! We’ve run stories about huskies throwing tantrums in the past (like Blaze refusing to get in his kennel or the pup who didn’t want to leave the dog park), but Zeus may be the cutest yet. In the clip—origin unknown—discovered by The Dodo and The Huffington Post two weeks ago, this husky loves bathtime so much that he often climbs into the tub, waiting for the water to be turned on. But when it’s not actually bathtime and his owner tries to get him out of the tub to take a walk, he protests—loudly! Enjoy the clip by viewing us on the web at www.townandcountrygazette.com.

Pocono on the 23rd March for the purpose of speaking and showing color pictures at the Northeast Conference of the National Education, which was held at Pocono Manor. This is a beautiful place and one gets good service; of course, not for free. The conference was held from Thursday until Saturday evening. There were teachers there from eleven states and Washington, D. C. Friday evening was Pa. Dutch Night. The food was good, however, there was not much leftovers remaining for the dog [doggie bag]. And the food was named, ‘Dutch this’ and ‘Dutch that’, but they forgot to use the Dutch’s

recipes when cooking. After the meal we went to the auditorium, where Paul Baumert, the music teacher at the March School in College Hill here in Easton, taught them to sing ‘Johnny Schmecker’ [‘Tschanni Schmoker’ in another source] and ‘Schnitzelbank’ [‘Wood-carver’s Bench’, a very popular song at Dutch Fersammling (assemblies)] And they did not do badly by the time he was finished with his singing school. Jim Beam, the Music Director from Easton [Schools], played the piano when they sang. Then our time came to speak. The program lasted from 9:30 until 11:00 O’clock. Over there in the lobby of the inn we had put up an exhibit of old items, that shows how the Dutch people live. One of the other school teachers from Easton even had brought along up here our woodcarver’s bench on his station wagon. What we get the most pleasure from is what happens after such programs. One woman from Buffalo came to us and asked for many details about the folk festival that is held every year in Kutztown. One woman from Washington, D. C., asked us if we could not give her the pattern for the cardboard[?] hat that we showed off when we were on stage. We showed a few pictures of an old carriage shop in Goodville, Lancaster County. After the program one man came and said he lives right next to the carriage maker, but the old fellow died a few weeks ago. These are the things from which we get a ‘kick’. We tried very hard to tell all of them that the Pa. Dutch do not all live in Lancaster County, like so many think. And also that those stars on the barn are not there to keep the witches away. [It is interesting to note that a large national organization like the NEA featured a Pennsylvania Dutch Night as late as 1956 at a regional meeting and even had the people singing in the Dialect.] [The song, ‘Johnny Schmecker’ belongs to a class

called cumulative ballads, where the last line of each previous verse is added to or”piled on” at the end of the current verse in reverse order. That can best be illustrated by providing the English translation of the first three verses from one rendering of that song: 1. Johnny Schmoker, Johnny Schmoker, can you sing, can you play? I can play on my fife. Twilli, willi, wink, this is my fife. 2. Johnny Schmoker, Johnny Schmoker, can you sing, can you play? I can play on my little bagpipe. Kwack, kwack, kwack, this is my bagpipe. Twilli, willi, wink, this is the fife. 3. Johnny Schmoker, Johnny Schmoker, Can you sing, can you play? I can play my drum. Rub, a dub, a dub, this is my drum. Kwack, kwack, kwack, this is my bagpipe. Twilli, willi, wink, this is my fife. Another characteristic of songs in this group is the increase in tempo at the end of each verse as the lines from previous verses are repeated. ‘Schnitzel bank’ is also in this grouping and if you sang it at a Fersammling you would most likely have experienced that feature. This increase in tempo and the repeating of lines of previous verses (and remembering their correct order) are part of the reason this type of song is so much fun to sing.]

Musings from a Pop Culture Addict by DANIELLE S. TEPPER

In last issue’s column, I discussed the first half of the sampling of shows I’ve tried so far and where they rank in my personal opinion: 1. Orange is the New Black 2. Jessica Jones 3. Fuller House 4. The Ranch. Now read about the rest!

5. House of Cards

Ranking Netflix Originals Part 2 Missed last issue’s column?

I was hesitant to give a Netflix original a try back in 2013, but when the buzz around “Orange is the New Black” became too loud to ignore, I was swayed to appreciate the brilliant concept streaming really is: Consumers like it because of the lack of annoying network regulations and censorship, plus no commercials, and the ability to devour episode after episode without waiting a week in between (thanks to Netflix for that; other platforms like Hulu lack that particular perk). Showrunners probably appreciate the flexibility and innovation. And Netflix, well they get to see their numbers start shooting up because no one wants to be left out when the hype starts circulating about an awesome new show, so they hurry to sign up. Without delving into too much research, I believe Netflix was the first to offer streaming-only television. Now Hulu and others like Amazon Prime and HBO Go have jumped on the money-making bandwagon. I haven’t strayed too far from Netflix because it’s still top banana in my eyes, but I may have to make an exception soon to check out Aaron Paul in “The Path” (Hulu). Anyway, the list of Netflix originals started small and has significantly expanded over the past couple of years and within the past few months, I’ve finally started to branch out and try a few more. Some of the newer ones with short episodes and truncated seasons take barely a day to watch. Others are more of a long-term commitment. And many are pleasant surprises. 40

I needed something new to binge-watch a couple months ago, so one night I pilot-tested three shows I’d always heard good things about: Friday Night Lights, Sons of Anarchy, and House of Cards. I think you know which one I landed on. I pursued Frank Underwood’s ruthless attempt to claim his spot in the White House in spite of my lackadaisical approach to politics mostly due to the journalism angle. I loved watching Kate Mara’s character carefully cultivate her sources, itching to uncover scandals, and using questionable means to achieve answers. {Spoiler Alert!} The journalism angle didn’t last long unfortunately after Zoe met the business end of a subway train and I felt my interest waning. The show delivers some powerhouse performances though and Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright are perfectly bone-chilling. I’ll probably keep up with it when season 5 rolls around.

6. Master of None

I’m not a fan of Aziz Ansari. I’m not not a fan—I guess I’m indifferent. I found his Parks & Rec character to be rather annoying when I finally binged that show a few months ago. But I was surprised and impressed at his tactful approach to some major themes in this show, which he wrote and exec-produced. There are a few great laughout-loud moments but also some poignant ones, particularly in episodes “Parents” and “Old People.” I’ll definitely be back for the sophomore season’s release. townandcountrygazette.com || MAY 19, 2016

BONUS: Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt*

If this could qualify for my list, it would be at the bottom, but I couldn’t even finish it. I think I made it three or four episodes in before shutting it off in disgust. I just can’t stomach Ellie Kemper. I find her highly annoying and her character was brainless. The premise had potential, but I couldn’t stand to wait around to see if it reached it. Season 2 was released April 15—I couldn’t care less. Want to read a Part 3? Send me your suggestions and recommendations for more Netflix originals I should try! Drop me a line at dtepper@idpcreative. com.

Places Mosquitoes Might Be Hiding in Your Yard (Family Features)

Spring has sprung, which means that mosquito season is almost here. These tiny insects could be living, flying and breeding right in your yard, and you might not even know it. Mosquitoes aren’t just a nuisance, they are also a health threat. Some species common in the United States can carry and spread Zika virus, Chikungunya virus, West Nile virus and canine heart worm. The first sign of mosquito activity is usually buzzing from female mosquitoes and their bites. Where Mosquitoes Breed Female mosquitoes can lay as many as 100 eggs at a time. They can lay eggs in just a few inches of

MAY 19, 2016 || townandcountrygazette.com

standing water, making pinpointing breeding sites a challenge. To help homeowners, Orkin Entomologist Ron Harrison, Ph.D., reveals seven places mosquitoes like the most and offers advice on how to help keep them out of your yard. Gutters. If enough debris is left to collect over time, dirty gutters can clog up and create pockets of water perfect for mosquito breeding. Cleaning gutters regularly to make sure water is flowing smoothly can help keep mosquitoes from breeding so close to your home. Toys. They are an often overlooked source of standing water, but toys can collect pockets of water and just a few inches is enough for a mosquito to raise a family. Flower pots. Rainwater can collect in saucers under flower pots. If left to sit for days, the water becomes an excellent breeding spot for mosquitoes. Bird baths. Even though birds eat a variety of insects, standing water in bird baths left unchecked for days at a time can become an oasis for female mosquitoes looking for a place to lay eggs. Inspect and change the water weekly to avoid an infestation. Rain barrels. If water is used within a few days, it will likely not be enough time to create a mosquito problem, but if water is left standing for multiple days, be prepared to find a hotbed of hungry pests. Plants. Some plants can hold water in their “mouths” and offer mosquitoes enough standing water to lay their eggs. Other shrubbery can serve as a hide-out for grown mosquitoes. In addition to blood, mosquitoes feed on nectar from flowers, so they often hide in shrubbery during the day. Thinning dense shrubbery to increase air flow can help reduce the number of adult mosquitoes in your yard. Tree cavities. Each year, cavities in tree stumps and trunks are filled with water by rainfall or melting ice and snow, and mosquitoes may choose these holes for breeding. While it can be difficult to remove the standing water, a licensed professional can help identify and treat these areas. Low points in the yard. Any areas lower than the rest of your yard may collect and hold standing water. Make note of these areas when patrolling and be sure to inspect and drain them if necessary. Take Back Your Yard It’s important to do a weekly inspection of your entire yard to locate and eliminate any standing water. It’s also a good idea to encourage your neighbors to do the same so that mosquitoes aren’t traveling from their yard to yours. If you’ve done everything you can to help prevent mosquitoes and are still having problems, you may need a licensed professional. For more details, visit Orkin.com. 41

Building or Replacing a Deck? 5 advantages of composites (Family Features)

Nearly 40 million decks in North America are projected to be more than 20 years old – and likely showing their age, according to the North American Deck and Railing Association. If one of those decks is yours, you may want to think twice before choosing the material for your next deck. Long the go-to material, wood is increasingly being replaced by composite decking as the material of choice for outdoor spaces. Designed to deliver incredible durability, easy maintenance and lasting beauty, composite decking offers all the beauty of wood without the hassles of continuous upkeep. “Today’s homeowners want to spend their time enjoying their outdoor living spaces – rather than maintaining them,” said Adam Zambanini, vice president of marketing for Trex, the world’s largest manufacturer of wood-alternative decking.“Highperformance composite decking stands up to weather and day-to-day wear far better than wood. It’s also made from recycled content, which makes it an ideal choice for today’s eco-conscious consumers.” Here are five key advantages of using composite decking:

42

Durability Composite decking is designed for maximum durability. It resists fading, staining, scratching and mold, and won’t rot, crack or warp. It’s also insectproof and splinter-free, making it safer and more comfortable for families with kids and pets. Low-maintenance With composite decking, you never need to worry about sanding, staining or painting. Just an occasional soap-and-water cleaning is all that’s needed to maintain stability and beauty for decades. Trex decking even comes with a 25-year Fade and Stain Warranty, ensuring that it will continue to look and perform as well as the first day it was installed. Aesthetics Featuring high-definition wood grain patterns and rich, saturated colors, composite decking looks and feels more natural than ever before. Color options range from deep earth tones to spicy reds and pristine greys, including tropically-inspired boards that feature the distinct streaked look of exotic hardwoods. In addition to the range of decking looks available, homeowners also can find a wide selection of composite accessories, such as railings, stairs, gates, pergolas and furniture, to create a truly customized outdoor space. Sustainability Composite decking provides the look and feel of wood without the environmental impact. The deck boards are made using recycled content, including reclaimed industrial wood scraps and recycled plastic from common items such as shopping bags and newspaper sleeves. Value Although the initial cost of composite decking can be higher, when you factor in the cost of ongoing maintenance required with a wood deck, a composite deck can end up paying for itself in well under 10 years. For more information about composite decking, visit trex.com. townandcountrygazette.com || MAY 19, 2016

Keep Pets Safe from Summertime Threats (Family Features)

Just as humans are exposed to certain risks when temperatures rise, hot weather creates the potential for both emergency threats and everyday dangers that can affect pets. From weather-related emergencies to fleas and ticks that can threaten even the healthiest animals, special care during the summer months is essential to making sure your pets stay safe. The makers of Adams™ Flea & Tick Control have teamed up with Code 3 Associates, a national nonprofit that rescues animals during disasters, and their spokesperson, Tony Stewart, to offer these tips to help pet owners steer clear of trouble this summer: Never leave a pet in the car, even with the window cracked. In fact, every year hundreds of pets die from heat exhaustion because they are left in parked cars. Especially during the summer, pet owners should be mindful that temperatures inside a car can increase almost 20 degrees in just 10 minutes. Protect against flea and tick infestations. The summer heat triggers flea and tick outbreaks and products like Adams™ Flea & Tick sprays and shampoos help keep pets free from fleas and ticks

– and as an added benefit, from 4/1/2016 through 9/30/2016, for each bottle of Adams™ shampoo and Adams™ spray sold by US retailers $1, up to $150,000, will be donated to Code 3 Associates to help animals in need during times of disaster. Provide plenty of water and shade to help protect pets from overheating. Save outdoor play time for mornings or evenings when it’s cooler. Make a pet disaster kit including water and food for seven days, water and food bowls, leashes and ID collars, a first aid kit, medications, medical records, familiar toys, muzzle, cleaning supplies and a contact card. If living in a disaster prone area, designate a family member to be in charge of your pets. Formulate a buddy system with a neighbor or friend who can check and care for your pets if you are out of the area and cannot return. Keep current frontal and profile photographs of each of your animals. If an animal has an identifying mark, take a photograph and keep it with you. Use this as positive ID if you need to reclaim a pet who is separated from the family during an emergency.

LIMO/BUS DRIVERS WANTED We are looking for safe, knowledgeable, customer focused drivers. We are looking for CDL and NONCDL drivers with some experience. Knowledge of major airports and cities is a PLUS. Must have clean driving and criminal record.

Kick Off Summer With These Memorial Day Party Recipes Submitted by Brittany Thomas

Planning the perfect Memorial Day party can be fun, but it can also be stressful to come up with just the right ingredients. Chef Blakely Trettenero, the founder of www.cookingforbimbos.com, says there are plenty of ways to make that party pop. “Grilling outside with family, friends, cocktails and fun is an ideal way to kickoff summer,” she says.

them. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees and cook the wings for 30 minutes (you can make BBQ sauce during this time). Next, brush the wings liberally with the sauce and kick the oven temperature up to 400 degrees. Cook the wings an additional 10 minutes.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Memorial Day is the third-largest grilling occasion of the year, behind July 4 and birthdays. Plus, it’s affordable, with the price of a 12-person cookout in 2015 rising just 2 percent over the previous year. “Make a party out of it,”Trettenero says.“Go ahead and decorate, and consider catering to everyone who will attend: kids, drinkers, vegetarians. And, don’t forget water bowls and treats for those with dogs.” Most important of all are the food and libations. Trettenero offers some recipes for getting the party started. • HOMEMADE BBQ SAUCE: Whether it’s steak, burgers, chicken or veggie patties, you can’t go wrong with fresh BBQ sauce. It’s easy to make your own sauce and it’s fun to tinker with different ingredients to see exactly what you and your family like. You won’t go wrong by combining the following ingredients: 1¼ cup ketchup 1 cup dark brown sugar ¼ cup water ¼ cup pineapple juice ¼ cup molasses juice from ½ lemon 2 ½ teaspoons dry mustard 2 teaspoons paprika ½ – 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon onion powder 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce salt pepper • Wing it in the oven: While grilling hot dogs and burgers, consider using the oven to cook wings in a tinfoil-lined tray for a much easier time than frying MAY 19, 2016 || townandcountrygazette.com

• WATERMELON MARGARITA POPSICLES: 5 cups diced seedless watermelon ½ cup sugar ¼ cup fresh squeezed lemon juice ¾ cup fresh squeezed lime juice ¼ cup fresh squeezed orange juice ½ cup silver tequila of choice sliced lime rounds (optional) In a blender add the watermelon, sugar, lemon juice, lime juice, orange juice and tequila. In your Popsicle mold of choice, pour the liquid ¾ of the way full, put on the top, and put in your sticks. If you want, add a thinly sliced lime round in the mold before pouring it in to make it look pretty. Let them freeze for 3-plus hours before enjoying. “These recipes are just the beginning of what’s possible at your grilling party,”Trettenero says. About Blakely Trettenero Blakely Trettenero, host of the Cooking for Bimbos (www.cookingforbimbos.com) and Hungry for Travels (www.hungryfortravels.com) websites, is a graduate of the Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Orlando, Fla. She is a world traveler, having visited more than 30 countries, and is becoming a frequent guest on TV. 47
