From The Editor’s Desk. As many of you know, November 11th is Veterans Day. Most of us, even if not Veterans, have friends, family, and neighbors who have served in the United States Armed Forces. No matter what your political bent, however you feel about the costs of war, it is without a doubt that these brave men and women have put their lives on the line, and sometimes made the ultimate sacrifice, in defense of freedom and liberty. Soldiers, Marines, Airmen, Sailors, and Guardsmen dedicate their lives to something higher than oneself, the ideals of democracy and the American way. For that, we honor them, even though our humble thanks cannot compare to the sacrifices they have made in times of great difficulty throughout our country’s history. I’ve asked some of our readers to post, in their own words, how they’d like to thank our Veterans. Some of their responses are listed below: Matthew Miles I make it a point to thank a veteran when I see they are wearing a hat or jacket stating where or when they served. When I lost my job a few
Joe Korba
months ago, I was fixing lawn mowers for a few extra bucks, and I found one on Free Cycle that someone was giving away that needed repair. This gentleman fought in Vietnam and I thanked him for his service. His response was “Well, you’re about 30 years too late.” I told him if I was there 30 years ago, I would have responded the same way. He explained how he was never able to get the right treatments back home, and he resented the way he was treated during the first 10 years back from Vietnam. He said “You folks just don’t understand how good it is here, and that we veterans aren’t asking for much in return.” After hearing about this, I’ve gotten involved in working to get folks in our local legislature who won’t cut funding for our veterans, who gave life and limb for our freedoms, who truly aren’t asking for much Matt Miles in return. and family Fully insured and Licensed and Owner operated | PA 7232

Honoring our Veterans I can fully understand the sacrifice made by all family and friends of these brave young men and women who so courageously have made the commitment to become soldiers. We are stateside missing them. There are tears and anxious moments. As an Army Mom, I pray everyday for my soldiers and all soldiers. More importantly, every day I am filled with a sense of great pride to be in their lives and live in the USA. -Cheryl Kern

Honoring our Veterans Warriors Watch Riders Salute to our Troops
By: Mike Burritt First and most importantly I would personally like to say to all my brothers and sisters who have and are currently serving our nation so honorably. Welcome home, and thank you for your service. While it is Veterans Day we should never forget the sacrifices that so many families have been made to endure. Some of these brave men and women never make it home to their families, to this I have no words to express my gratitude and

Keep each and every one in your thoughts and prayers. We must all understand that harsh treatment of our troops does indeed have a demoralizing effect on them, just ask any Vietnam Veteran. Conversely, when we show support for our troops they are Continued on Page 7

Warriors Watch Continued from Page 6 given a great sense of pride in their service to us. Fortunately we as Americans have learned from the mistakes of the past. It should be said that groups like Warrior's Watch were founded by Vietnam Veterans. This is the reason for one of our catch phrases, " Never Again Will An American Warrior Be Scorned Or Ignored." Warriors' Watch, "Has your back here at home." When we recieve a mission request, it does not matter what that entails. In the year and a half Warriors' Watch has been in the Lehigh Valley, we have done flaglines at funerals, provided welcome homes, send off's for individuals or entire units, birthday parties for our aging veterans, and visited nursing homes. Anything so that our veterans understand, their service to our nation will not be forgotten. While many in the Warriors' Watch ride motorcycles, many others do not. I can promise you one thing, if you participate in just one Welcome Home, it will not be your last. We strive to make each and every mission a memory that will always be apart of our hero's life, and that of their families. Should you want any type of service scheduled for the hero in your life, please either go to http://www.warriorswatch.org/ or send an email to ecpa.wwr@gmail.com. And above all this service is free of charge, we do not accept any donations, and if you would like to join us, it costs you nothing except your time. Joel Merkel, Friedens Fire Chief, explained to the children how important it is for the children to know that their only job, if they should be faced with a fire, is to get out of the house! Jeremy Merkel, Friedens Captain dressed in his fire gear, explained to the children through his air mask that this is what a firefighter would look and sound like in a real fire and that they were not to be afraid of firefighters. Some of the children were apprehensive, but then followed their classmates in shaking hands with Jeremy. The children then went outside and toured the outside of the fire truck and climbed through the truck, but of course some of the children wanted to be firefighters and climbed in to the seats. They were then given a bag of goodies and fire helmets. While the children were preparing for lunch the firemen started “smoking” the building. The children then practiced a fire drill by climbing out of their “smoke” filled classroom on their hands & knees.
Yes, some of the children were a bit scared but made their way to safety outside and were congratulated by Chief Joel on what a great job they did. He assured them that it was only a practice drill and that even the firefighters practice doing these drills. This type of drill also provided a great learning experience for staff as they were able to see which children may be more likely to panic if there was a real fire. Thank You Frieden’s Fire Company!

Scouting For Food Boy Scouts and volunteers from the local Minsi Trails Boy Scout Council will be out Saturday, November 10 collecting non-perishable food for the annual Scouting For Food community food drive. Door hangers were delivered throughout many area neighborhoods last Saturday letting residents know about the food drive. For residents who did not get a door hanger, food may be dropped off at any participating area Walmart store, Wegmans food store, WFMZ-TV, Lafayette Ambassador Bank branch or Team Capital Bank branch, Ray Price Car Dealerships, Bennett Toyota, United Way of the Lehigh Valley, Minsi Trails Council. This is one of the area’s largest single-day food drives. Last year Scouting For Food brought in nearly 200,000 pounds of food for local food banks. That’s enough food to feed over 8,000 people for a week. 2012 is the Scout’s 26th year conducting the annual food drive, with over three million pounds of food being distributed to local food banks during this period. “With the approach of the holiday season, this is the time of year when local food banks often have shortages,” said Craig Poland, Scout Executive and CEO, Minsi Trails Council, BSA. “It’s a great learning experience for Scouts to help serve our local communities and help fill area food banks for the holidays.”
NORTHAMPTON VFW CATERING SERVICE
Kathy Craine, television personality with WFMZ-TV 69, is the Scouting for Food chairperson again this year. “Scouting For Food makes a tremendous positive impact on our local communities,” Kathy Craine commented. “Since nearly 40 percent of food bank donations go to feed children, Scouting For Food is really about kids helping to feed kids. It’s heartwarming and important for our communities.” This is the largest of many major service projects that the Boy Scouts conduct each year. Nearly, 6,000 local Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and volunteers typically participate in the food drive along with many area businesses. About Minsi Trails Council: Minsi Trails Council provides leadership and character development programs to nearly 17,000 youth with 5,500 adult volunteers. The council serves young people throughout the Anthracite Region, Pocono Mountains and Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania along with western New Jersey and serves six-counties: Lehigh, Northampton, Monroe, Carbon, Luzerne, and Warren counties. The local Scouting heritage dates back more than 100 years when the council’s first Scout troops were established in the Allentown and Easton areas. A Beautiful Fall Day for a Bike Ride By Nancy Thatcher A very cool yet very sunny sky greeted over 25 riders on the interpretive bike ride along the D & L trail on the morning of Saturday, October 13th. At the Cove Road Trail Head, members of Lehigh Township Rails to Trails discussed the history of Laurys Station and Treichlers, as well as some of the geology that has determined the path of the Lehigh River addressed the crowd. Elissa Garofalo, President of the Delaware and Lehigh National Heritage Corridor, spoke about the development and importance of the Rail Trail. As people rode north on the trail, stops were made in the area of the Treichlers dam to view the dam and to hear Mike Bender talk about the concrete phone booth located nearby. Later on the ride the roles of Rockdale and Lockport as stopping places along the railroad and canal routes were highlighted. Near Slatington, Everett Kaul of the Walnutport Canal Association talked about the history of the railroad, whose trestle pillars still stand. Mike Naugle, a member of the Bertsch-Hokendauqua-Catasauqua Watershed Association, gave a presentation about invasive species around the Slatington trail head. Near T&C Gazette half page Carrier.pdf 10/24/2012 the end Sullivan of the ride pictures of past structures at Lehigh Gap were shown to everyone. Riders then

Ask the Students By: Tyler Trumbauer With the Presidential election taking place on November 6, we wanted to know what first time and future voters look at as the most important issues affecting America today. Following are a few of the responses from Northern Lehigh students. Lauren Zellner, NLHS Senior- “I actually will be able to vote this year and I am more than excited to be registered. It feels awesome to have a say in who will run the country. Although all the issues are important I believe the war on drugs should be considered the most. [President Barack] Obama believes the war on drugs has done more harm than good to society and he wishes to reform the country’s policies. Although the issue has not been discussed too [often] by the candidates, Obama states that he will focus on it more if he is reelected for another term.” Ruth Milburn, NLHS Senior- “I think the biggest sticking point for me would be lowering the national debt and improving the U.S. economy. It is important to me that I will be able to get a job when I get out of college and also that our generation won’t have to pay so highly for the last generation’s mistakes and debt.” Annelise Tarafas, NLHS Junior- “The issue that would stick with me is the issues on women and women’s health. As seen on the news, Romney and the Republicans have recently been questioning a woman’s right to have an abortion and the use of birth control being covered by health insurance. I do not agree with this questioning. A woman should be able to take birth control, with it being covered by health insurance, and have an abortion if she feels it is necessary.”
Kelcie Kramer, NLHS Junior- “The biggest sticking point with me would have to be the candidates whose financial plan would best solve our country’s national deficit. It is my belief that a president should not begin budget planning and enacting new plans if there is no budget to work with. I look at their plans to fix out country’s debt and reform our financial problems.

VETERANS DAY 2012 IN MEMORY AND HONOR… During the past year, we have had the privilege of serving the families of Veterans. We are honored to be of service to them in their time of need, just as their loved one was there in our time of need. On Veteran’s Day, we pay tribute to those who served our country in the name of Freedom, the same Freedom that allows us to serve them. Our prayers are with all the Veterans, their families, and with the brave men and women serving our country today. We also wish to thank those from our area’s veteran service groups who volunteer their time in honor guards and firing squads bestowing the greatest honor for their deceased comrades. Ruth I. to transport audiences to unique places with amazing sets built by the Freddy Award winning student design team. The play this year is a jaw-dropping macabre murder mystery regarding a Mr. U.N. Owen, who invites ten people for a weekend on an island but he isn’t there when they arrive. At dinner a record is played that accuses all of the people of being a murderer. Suddenly the first of them is dead, then the next, and then the next… It seems to be that one of them is the murderer, but the person in suspect is always the person murdered next. At last only two people are left. Who is the killer? Come see Northern Lehigh Little Theater Company’s production of “And Then There Were None.” Performances are at Northern Lehigh High School, One Bulldog Lane, Slatington, PA 18080, on Friday, November 16 at 7pm, Saturday November 17 at 7pm, and Sunday November 18 at 2pm. General Admission seating is $7.00 and tickets are available at the door.

Volunteers Wanted Share Your Smarts
(NAPSI)—An estimated 10,000 baby boomers are retiring every day. Many are looking to volunteer at organizations that can benefit from their work experiences and expertise. Perhaps surprisingly, that’s not always easy. “One out of three recent retirees leave their volunteer posts within months because organizations are not properly prepared to utilize the volunteers’ professional experiences and knowledge,” a recent study released by the Corporation for National and Community Service revealed.
Fortunately, there’s a new website that can help organizations tap into the professional expertise that recent retirees can offer. The Aging Network’s Volunteer Collaborative is designed to help agencies prepare for the influx of boomers and to take full advantage of the volunteers they have. The Collaborative is a full-service support center designed to help the agencies of the Aging Network engage older adults in meaningful service. Its website provides tools and resources to build a strong volunteer program. To learn more this topic, please visit the website www.agingnetworkvolunteercollaborative.org

Off The Shelf Veterans Day Program Cancelled
By: Louise Bechtel Unfortunately, the Veterans Day program previously announced for the Slatington libraryhas been canceled. The library board and staff would like to thank Mr.William Leickel for all he has done for the library and we look forward to future programs. The library will be hosting an e-reader petting zoo the week of November 11th to 17th. The zoo consists of an iPad, Kindle fire, Nook Color, Nook Simple Touch, and Sony Reader. If you are considering buying one of these and would like to compare them, or just see how they work visit the library during this week. The library has been able to make some improvements because of a grant from the Harry C. Trexler Trust. We have a new fax machine and copier, new fixtures for the bathroom, and cabinets will be installed in the back for storage. The Trexler Trust has been very supportive of our library and through grants from the Trust the library building has been maintained and improved. There is always a book sale at the library. Hardbacks are 50 cents and paperbacks are 25 cents. The library takes donations of books. We do

November 8, 1956 This is the time of the year to bring in the turnips, pumpkins and cabbage from the fields. That reminds us also that someone called us on the phone and asked me why one would put grape leaves on top of the sauerkraut when it’s made. Well, that was a [new] one to me. We always washed the outside leaves of the cabbage very well and put them aside until we made the sauerkraut; then we used those leaves as a cover. Why one would use grape leaves, I still can not understand. A friend told us that her mother put wet grape or rhubarb leaves on her head under the sun-bonnet when she worked outside in the hot sun. A Touch of Dutch Continued on Page 44 Who can tell me what ‘Schpetzelcher’ are? Yes, these are small birds. But they are also some small things that are made from dough. Last week, when we showed pictures at the Good Shepherd Home in Allentown, a woman told us that they always made ‘Schpetzelcher’, when they had sauerkraut at home. But we failed to find out more about it. We understood that is used noodle dough, but instead of rolling it out, they just broke off little lumps and boiled them in salt water. Then the water was drained and butter added. If anyone knows about making it, please let me know how.

From the Hive
By Jeanette Eckhart Berta Autumn is the time of the year when honeybees begin to honker down in anticipation for the winter season. The queen’s egg laying is dramatically reduced and hive population drops significantly. Drones, the male honeybee gets kicked out by the worker, female honeybee. So when winter comes there will be no males left in the hive to feed. Sounds cruel, but bees need their honey to sustain their lives, as well as the life of the queen until spring. The job of the male honeybee is only to reproduce with a virgin queen if that need should arise. So to use food reserves on male bees is inefficient and wasteful. This leaves the female, worker bees, no choice but to remove them from the hive. The female, worker bee, is responsible for keeping the queen alive. As a beekeeper myself, I enjoy watching the females dragging the males out of the hive. Using her legs the female grabs the male and drops him outside the hive struggling in flight as she does so. Of course, there is some resistance from the male but the female always wins. Continued on Page 47

From the Hive Continued on Page 46 All worker bees are female but are unable to reproduce. They live 4 to 9 months during the winter but only 6 weeks during the busy summer months. A hive consists of 20,000 to 30,000 bees in the winter, all female. In the summer months there may be as many as 80,000 bees. Drones live only during the warmer months and have a presence of about 300 to 3000 in the hive.

ail to the chipotle chile pepper! Chipotles are smoked jalapenos and are commonly found in grocery stores, either as a powder in the spice aisle or in cans with aromatic adobo sauce in the ethnic foods aisle. Home cook Sandi Sheppard adds flavor and flair to her pork chili recipe with these tantalizing chile peppers, along with fresh jalapenos and canned chipotle-spiked white corn. Fresh cilantro sprinkled on top cools it down. See step-by-step photos of Sandi’s recipe plus thousands more from home cooks around the country: www.justapinch.com/chiliverde You’ll also find a meal planner, coupons & chances to win! to break 100 the same as he treats Nick Vicello, who is our second best player on the team. To me when you get the way he is as a young man and couple that with the scores that he is shooting, it is just a win-win situation.” On top of having a record-breaking regular season, Miller, also won the Colonial League golf title by five strokes. That led him to the District 11 tournament where he finished tied for first. After that victory he was off to the East Regional tournament where the top 16 players qualify for the state tournament. Miller finished tied for fourth with a score of five over par, 77. Miller was off to the state tournament for his second straight year. This two day tournament took place at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York, Pennsylvania. After day one of the tournament, Miller shot a one over 72 which earned him sole possession of first place. On the second and final day of the tournament, he shot a four over par, 75. Those combined scores notched a five over par score for the tournament. That landed Miller in a tie for second place. Miller is a stand-up man and he is only a junior in high school. He is a dedicated and a hard-working individual. Golf is a game that you need to constantly keep working on and Miller
-57 under par. That statistic is astounding to golfers of any level, from beginner to professional. That cumulative score was posted by Northwestern Lehigh junior, Cole Miller, during his regular season. Even though he may not admit it, Miller, is the star of the Tigers’ high school golf team. “I never would have thought he would have been -57 under par this year, especially since it is only his junior season.” said Tim Miller, head coach of Northwestern’s golf team and also the head professional at Olde Homestead Golf Club. Coach Miller praised Miller’s skills not only on the golf course, but also in the classroom and in society to me in a phone interview this past week. With all the success that Miller has been achieving, Coach Miller says he still keeps a level head, “He [Miller] Sullivan is just aT&Cnice, solid young man. Touring Germany: Flying High Over Munich By: Christine Zopf When we arrived back at the hostel for the night, a majority of the group chose to stay in. Half of the GAPP students and I crowded into one room. As is expected of a room of twelve teenagers, we were too loud and told by our teachers to quiet down a bit. Their warning had no impact, and we continued to cause an uproar. Looking back on my time in Munich, this was the best night we spent there. Although we didn't go out and do anything in the city, we bonded and became better friends through random games and telling stories. Our favorite game to play was called Get Down Mr. President.

Munich, Germany seen from above. In this game, one person must start by putting their finger to their ear like a secret service agent. Others follow suit, and when all but one person has done this, the group will tackle the last person to the ground, all while yelling “get down Mr. President!” We chose to play while my brother was in the bathroom, and once he came out he was tackled to the ground by four people. It's safe to say that upon entering a room, you wanted to have your finger to your ear; you never knew when your friends were plotting against you. On our final full day in Germany our group split into two groups. One group would be touring Munich on bikes, and the other group would be touring first by tram and then by foot. I toured with

Touring Germany: Flying High Over Munich the walking group, my ankle had becoming swollen in the past few days and I thought biking would irritate it further. The walking group consisted of myself and four others, including Frau Wenck, one of the German teachers. Our first challenge was finding the tram. Little did we know it was above ground, and we were searching in the underground subway station. Once we finally found it, we got off at the wrong stop and had to ask multiple people for directions to the English Gardens, our destination. The most helpful was a small, elderly woman who not only gave us directions, but took us to the subway we needed to board. By this point it had begun to rain, and none of us had thought to bring an umbrella. The temperature was also chilly in comparison to the last few days of touring. The rain didn't discourage us, and we trekked through the rain, determined to get to the English Gardens where Frau Wenck had told us of surfers who came to the river, rain or shine. We did eventually find the Gardens, but we didn't stay long. We had a time restraint and had to find our way back to Marienplatz, our central meeting point. When we asked for directions back to Marienplatz, we were given false directions twice, and walked thirty minutes back towards the square, where we met up with those who had biked, and spent the afternoon shopping.
That evening the GAPP students dressed to impress. We would be having a farewell dinner at Munich's Ratskeller, or restaurant located in the city hall. The dinner was fantastic, but I still didn't think that the following day I would be on a plane. Despite my disbelief I still packed my bag that night, finishing long before my roommates, who were up packing until 4 a.m. I had mixed feelings about heading home. During my trip I had reveled in my freedom, it was the first time I had ever been away from home for an extended period of time. But although I was sad to leave, I looked forward to sleeping in my own bed more than anything. As I fell asleep I thought of home.

Extra Point Continued from Page 51 has the perfect mindset to excel. He is a good example of all the young, up and coming golfers that are landing on the professional scene. Miller consistently drives the ball over 300 yards off the tee and is a long hitter in general. Keep your eyes out for Miller as he has one more varsity season to dazzle not only the local fans, but the college scouts as well. Although the PGA Tour is his dream, he has a goal to get an education first. I know he is capable of achieving both and it will be great to watch him do it too.
