assistance in the effort to maintain their independence. During a Community Care Visit, NOVA’s paramedics and emergency medical technicians will assess wellness and nutrition, bring attention to medical concerns, reconcile medication, and make recommendations for safety. Through education, closer monitoring, and improved communication between patients and their primary care physicians, this service will work to prevent many emergencies before they happen. The Community Care Visits Program is low cost, it is the first of its kind in the Lehigh Valley and NOVA is excited to offer this service to its subscribers. Details about the program are outlined in the 2019 Subscription brochure. Please keep an eye out for the Subscription mailer, which began November 8th, and make it a priority to Subscribe. NOVA is the primary 911 emergency medical services provider for Heidelberg Township, North Whitehall Township, Washington Township, portions of Lowhill Township, Slatington Borough, and Walnutport Borough. In addition, NOVA continues to offer CPR and first aid training, free car seat safety checks, and stands by at community special events. NOVA can be contacted by calling (610)262-1075.

OFF THE SHELF

History Program at the Slatington LIbrary On Friday November 2nd, the Slatington Public Library welcomed retired local businessman and Slatington historian Christy Haydt for a very special program.

Christy displayed various historical artifacts and pictures of Slatington from the previous two centuries. The talk he gave was a fascinating glimpse of the founders of our borough. Slatington’s formative years were dominated by agriculture, lumber and gristmills. In the mid nineteenth Continued on page 12

century, the discovery of slate in the area ushered in a long period of growth, wealth, and prosperity. The railroad offered reliable transportation for goods and people. Large hotels were built like the Arlington and the Bittner House. Children were educated at the Roosevelt, Lincoln, and Slatington High School Buildings. Shopping was easy in the many stores. Haines department store later became the Ben Franklin five and ten. That building also housed a Slate Exchange. Dentist’s Office, and Barbershop in the basement. In the late twentieth century it became the home to the Slatington Library. The Acme, A&P, Jones Shoe Store, Sweet Shop, Handwerk’s Restaurant, Candy Land. Marty’s Sporting Goods, Overdorfs Clothing, Kuntz’s Confections and Tobacco, Art’s Bar, Boyer’s Hardware, and Car Dealership were some of Slatington’s merchants. The Slate Quarries, Keystone Lamp, Paint Mill, Stanwood Mills, American Nickeloid, Orkin Steel, Paris Neckwear, and various “Dress Mills” were the local employers. Christy mentioned many names of local citizens who contributed to the success of Slatington.

He acknowledged that our town has undergone a period of adjustment in the twenty first century. Many of the merchant’s and manufacturing jobs have been lost, but the future may lie in tourism. Slatington is now a trail town, and the community needs to take advantage of the opportunities that arise from this designation. She is in the process of writing a sequel, and she asked those in attendance to give their opinions on her narrative thus far. to see the pretty leaves, we can’t help but still look to see the old fences here about, which have done a great service years ago, but now are no longer considered as something valuable for the farm. Fences were put up for three reasons: to keep the cattle in the field; to divide the farm in parcels to grow different crops; and third, to let the neighbors know how far every farmer’s land went. Of all the old fences, that still survive, the stone wall fence is the nicest of all to me. I believe they are the oldest fences we can find. They were sturdy

and served their purpose many years. The stones needed to be pick up from the land to farm it. A stone fence was made by the farmer, who picked the stone up from the field and dumped them off out along the field. That is a stone row fence. And the farmer, who wanted to make his place look a little nice, built the stone up nicely in a wall for a “stone wall fence”. The fence was built ‘dry’, without mortar. November 14, 1957 This week we want to acknowledge the old stake fences. This type of fence was many times called the worm fence. An English word, this we could say, would be zig-zag fence. nailed it to the posts. And the fence to make the place look nice was the clapboard or picket fence around the yard. It was regularly white-washed. O sure, we can still remember the common board fence, the wood slab fence [rough cuts from timber], and the beautiful cast iron fence around the yard, the rail fence, the stump fence [usually around a wood lot on the farm, from tree stumps] and the hedge fence. We want to keep a picture of those fences in our head, so if they fall into ruin, that we can still see them in our mind and can appreciate them. Hallicher Bet-daag zu eich all! Happy Thanksgiving to everyone! ‘from here to there’ or ‘over here to over there’ fence. This type of fence took a lot of work to put up. The fence that made the least work was the brush fence. There were always much underbrush and little trees growing up [in the fence row] and the farmer left them stand, and that we called the brush fence. Later the farmer started putting up the post fences. It was a lot of work to make the fence rails and posts. This was a job done through the winter, so they were ready when spring came around. Later came the time when the farmer bought wire and

Northampton High School students present Birthday gift of a lifetime by HANNA O’REILLY

We all remember our senior year of high school. For some- it may have been unforgettable. However, John Fox of Northampton’s experience may have just topped us all. On Tuesday, Nov. 6, Northampton Area High School Senior John Fox celebrated his 18th birthday with some of his close friends. What he didn’t realize was that these nine Northampton High School seniors had a big surprise up their sleeves. Fox has been a Philadelphia Eagles fan for most of his life.“He loves the Eagles-he is very passionate about that,” said mom Sherri Ann of Northampton. Longtime friends, Phil Vooz and Max Martinez,

know how much football and the Eagles specifically mean to Fox. Vooz reached out to John’s mom Sherri and a group of their friends about purchasing two tickets to the Dec. 23 game (Eagles Vs. Texans) for Fox’s birthday. The students took all of the initiative by themselves, making the gift all the more special. Fox was in study hall on Tuesday, Nov. 6, when he was given a pass to go to another classroom. With little details as to why, Fox was confused. However, like the good student he is, he followed what he was instructed to do. Upon entering the classroom, Fox was greeted by some of his good friends with Happy Birthday wishes, before informing him of their idea to buy him the Eagle’s tickets. They were also able to score passes to the sidelines for pre-warm up and the opportunity for Fox to receive any jersey of his choice. Ecstatic Fox couldn’t believe his ears. Sherri explained how surprised he was at the more than generous gift he was presented with. “He never asks for anything,” Sherri mentioned, making Fox the perfect recipient of this gift. Sherri Fox also added that her son wants to be a sports commentator one day. What a better way to kickstart his dream than at Lincoln Financial Field on December 23? Fox will never forget this awesome birthday. News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || NOVEMBER 15, 2018

Final Public Meeting - Recreation Center Feasability Study submitted by Michael Kukitz

Please join us, the Northern Lehigh Recreation Authority (NLRA), as we host our second and final public Recreation/Community Center Strategic Planning meeting. We understand that the Northern Lehigh Community Center project has been discussed for many years but the new Northern Lehigh Recreation Authority has just started the process of looking to complete this facility. We will be unveiling our initial plan for this facility at this

meeting. Come learn about it, provide your input, see the proposed layout and conceptual drawings and have your questions answered. Constructing this facility will truly start a new chapter in Northern Lehigh while we continue to improve the overall quality of life for residents in the northwest region of the Lehigh Valley. We sincerely hope you can join us on Wednesday November 14, 2018 at 6 p.m. in the Northern Lehigh School District Administration Building, 1201 Shadow Oaks Lane, Slatington. We are asking YOU to please take a little time out of your busy schedule to attend. Kimmel Bogrette, Architect and Site Planners, and Ballard*King continue to lead this community-wide effort. Again, these firms are some of the nation’s elite community center consultants who are currently working on similar community and recreation center projects for North Fayette Township and The Township of Derry, and have recently worked with Montgomery Township, Bethlehem Township, Radnor Township, Upper Merion Township, West Chester Borough and Haverford Township, among many others, to study possibilities for developing and operating

Lehigh Twp. Elementary School hosts Veterans Day assembly by HANNA O'REILLY

Today we remember our veterans-those who have fought and currently fight for our country. Lehigh Township Elementary School wanted to do something special for local veterans by inviting them to the school’s gym for a special commemorative event. On Nov. 12 around 9:30 a.m., faculty, staff, and students of Lehigh Township Elementary filled the school’s gym wearing their red, white and blue. Students watched in awe as veterans- some dressed in their professional uniforms carrying flagsprocessed into the gym with family members by their sides. Principal Cassandra Herr started off the ceremony with a quote from Brodi Ashton that stated,“Heroes are made by the paths they choose, not the powers they are graced with,” fitting for this special day. Herr went on with the presentations by having each veteran introduce themselves, state their rank, and introduce the family members they were with. The students were eager to learn about each visitor and hear about what they had to share. One by one, the veterans talked about what they’ve done, the history of Veteran’s Day-formally known as Armistice Day-, the processes they went through in basic military training, an explanation of P.O.W.

M.I.A., and a demonstration of flag folding at a ceremonial burial. Students were invited to participate in a question and answer portion of the presentation, giving them the opportunity to learn even more from the visiting veterans. Everybody in attendance was grateful for the time spent with these incredible Americans. Sergeant Jonathan Wolfel, who served in Vietnam, ended the presentation with encouraging words for the students to takeaway: “You are our future. Make the world a better place,” he stated.“It’s never too early to start. I am counting on you,” Wolfel concluded. Thank you to all our veterans.
