FROM THE PUBLISHER’S DESK This is our Thanksgiving issue. I know I have a lot to be thankful for. I’m thankful that I have an amazing mother and husband whom I love with all my heart. I have two wonderful sons; Derek has a fantastic wife and two terrific children. Adam has a fabulous girlfriend. I also have two incredible sisters; and two, sometimes naughty, dogs. I’m so thankful to have such a wonderful, loving family who I love very much. I’m also lucky to have friends that I hold close to my heart. Some I see almost everyday, and others only on special occasions. I recently ran into a friend that I haven’t seen in quite some time and she holds a special place in my heart; her name is Berdelle. From our family to your family, we hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving. -Kathy Marsh

Fun Arrows From The Wood Connection Submitted by WOOD CONNECTION BLOG
Have you seen the fun arrows that The Wood Connection has?! They are so fun! I’ve enjoyed decorating my front porch with them. After I did my fall arrows, I knew I wanted to do some for Christmas as well, so when The Wood Connection asked me to do some Christmas arrows, I jumped at the chance. Let me show you how to make these. I decided I wanted to do reverse vinyl on my arrows, so that I would be able to put them outside in the weather. The vinyl isn’t recommended for outdoor use. I started by painting my arrows white, the color that I wanted my words to be. Using the transfer tape with the vinyl, I put the vinyl on. Then I painted over my vinyl, the color that I wanted my sign to be. It took two or three coats to get it as dark as I wanted. Make sure to let the paint dry well between coats. Once you have all your paint on, let it dry to the touch, and then start removing your vinyl. Mine did bleed a little bit underneath the vinyl when I painted, but I wasn’t worried about that, because I distressed it with a really fine sandpaper. Once you have all your arrows painted and distressed, you are ready to “Let it Snow!”This “snow” was SO MUCH FUN to play with! You’ll want to stir it up before you start. You take the stick and just start putting it on where you want it. Once you have enough on, then use your stick to make some little peaks. When you have it looking just like you want it, you can add glitter if you choose. I just sprinkled it lightly on the top. You do have to let this dry for a while

again and then used the wood glue to put them on. Once they were glued, I put some weight on the arrows above where the glue was, to help it stay in place. I had to find something that wasn’t too big so it didn’t smash my “snow.” I let this dry for 15-20 minutes. Once your glue is dry, embellish with some ribbon if you desire. That’s it! You are all ready to take your cute sign outside and put it by your front door.

(I let mine dry for 24 hours). Once the “snow” was dry, I sprayed my arrows with a sealer, to help the glitter stay on and to give the signs a little extra shine. Now you are ready to put them on your post. I positioned mine how I wanted them, took them off

Something New Along the D&L Trail Submitted by NANCY THATCHER
If you are heading out for a brisk, fall walk or bike ride, look for the informative signs that Lehigh Township Rails to Trails has recently installed along the Delaware and Lehigh Rail Trail. They can be found along the trail between Slatington and the Cove Road Trailhead. One has been placed by the refurbished concrete phone booth, and the other nearby, at the remains of the 3 Mile Dam. Both signs use photos and text to tell local history relating to the railroads and canal that ran along the river. Learn what the use of the phone booths was. Have you ever seen any other booths along former railroad beds? The 3 Mile Dam, like many others that once spanned the Lehigh River, had more than one purpose. Do you know what they were? We are always looking for people who enjoy the outdoors to join our group and participate in our activities. Our next meeting at the Lehigh Township Municipal Building will be the third Thursday in January at 7 p.m. For additional information, visit our Facebook page or call 610-767-0676.

Northampton DECA Club submitted by TARA MRAZIK
If you happened to run, walk or ride past Saylor Park, on the Coplay segment of the Ironton Rail Trail the morning of October 15, there’s a good chance you saw a dog or two in their Halloween costumes. No, the dogs weren’t Trick-orTreating, but be assured they each got several treats. They were participating in the Howloween 5k Dog Walk-Run, a charity event which was the creation of Kate Gogel and Carlie Small, Northampton High School students and members of the school’s DECA Club. Benefitting Peaceable Kingdom, a local pet rescue organization, as well as the Ironton Rail Trail itself, the event featured 87 registered runners/walkers, as well as 30 dogs in a colorful array of costume. While the event did have some serious runners, the overall atmosphere was one of enjoyment and fundraising for the two organizations, who each provide excellent services to the community at large. Peaceable Kingdom, a no-kill animal rescue shelter, stated that the proceeds they will be receiving will go toward much-needed medical supplies. Donations to Peaceable Kingdom are always welcome and continually needed. They are contactable at their website, www.lvpeaceablekingdom.info. The IRT is a Rails-to-Trails recreation park and walkway in Whitehall, Coplay and North Whitehall, following the route of the former Ironton Railroad, providing a safe, clean and enjoyable exercise path for community residents. The race is the DECA project for this school year for Gogel and Small, who will present the planning, implementation and results of the program in December at the State DECA competition in Hershey. Should their project finish in the top level of their category, the two students will have the opportunity to present it at the DECA National Competition in Anaheim, CA, in the spring of 2017.

around during the Christmas season], to get the items to hang at the windows and to put on the tree, and again to hide a lard can full of cookies on the garret to keep them from being eaten until Christmas. Yes, this means running up and down the garret steps a couple of times a day. But right now this reminds us to reflect upon what another name is for the word, “garret.” That is English, but that is the way we always said it at home in Dutch. We have already heard that some people said, “the uppermost floor”, when they mean garret. Not long ago we heard a new term. One man over in Lehigh County told us he went up to “the wasp heaven” to search for a book in a box. Now we think that would be right good. We can still remember how the garret at home on the farm was so full of wasps that were always buzzing. And how we sometimes also got a good sting, when we got in their way. For sure, another name for a garret would also be “the fly heaven.” This fall we were up on a garret
(and this was in a house that was not built long ago) that was completely black with dead flies. The women [there], like all Dutch women who I know, was almost standing on her head over these flies. I always had three things I strongly hated when the subject is garret-cleaning: dead flies, wasps, and splinters on the floor [boards]. [It is interesting that Florence mentions three Dutch terms for the garret, but does not mention the other commonly used English term, attic, which was heard more often in my area of Plainfield Township. So perhaps there are regional preferences for English terms as well as Dialect words.]

INGREDIENTS 15 jumbo pasta shells 2 C. ricotta cheese 1 C. shredded mozzarella ¾ C. olive oil packed sun-dried tomatoes, finely chopped 2 Tbsp. chopped basil ½ C. low-sodium chicken broth ½ C. heavy cream DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 350. In a large pot, boil water and cook shells until al dente. In a large bowl, combine ricotta, mozzarella, half the sun-dried tomatoes, and basil. In a small saucepan over low heat, combine chicken broth, heavy cream, and remaining sun-dried tomatoes. Bring to a simmer, cook for five minutes. Pour almost all the sauce into a baking dish. Spoon ricotta filling into shells and then add to the pan. Spoon over remaining sauce. Bake until cheese is melted and bubbling, about 15 to 20 minutes. These stuffed shells are so easy and so delicious! Without realizing it, I bought canned bruschetta from Weis (see picture) instead of regular sun-dried tomatoes. This was a happy accident and the end product was amazing. I used a little less than ¾ cup since it was such a concentrated mixture already. I also used a little extra heavy cream for my sauce and added some flour to make it a bit thicker. I wouldn’t have minded some chicken in there, maybe some spinach too. My picture isn’t very pretty but they certainly tasted up to par, I hope you’re as pleased with them as I was!

Budget Holiday Porch Makeover
From HGTVÂ
By reusing lanterns, baskets and affordable greenery, a Georgia porch gets a festive update for under $50. After: The result is a budget-friendly holiday makeover that's a bit reminiscent of a Currier and Ives print. The garland, wreath and swags ended up at just under $35. We used icicle lights and lanterns we already owned. An important factor for us: The porch still doesn't feel cluttered.

Winterize Your Home on a Budget By LISA ROJAK
Securing your home against winter is always a prime consideration for homeowners, no matter where you live. Regardless of what direction the cost of heating oil, propane, and other fuels is heading, it makes good sense to ensure that you and your family stay comfortable the entire season while protecting your investment. The good news is that it doesn’t have to be expensive. There are a surprising number of easy things you can do at minimal cost that can maximize energy savings this winter. Below are suggestions for budgets of $100, $250, and $500 (at current prices), as well as some ideas that cost nothing. $100 OR LESS • Basic caulk gun ($20) and four tubes of caulk ($7.50 each) to fill gaps in siding, windows, and doors. For drafty windows and doors, don’t just fill the gaps on the outside, says home renovation and remodeling consultant Dean Bennett of Dean Bennett Design and Construction in Castle Rock, CO.“Pull the molding off to fill the insulation gaps around the window jamb.” If you prefer, you can
use a can of low-expansion window foam ($7 each) instead of caulk. Cost: $50. • Plastic film window insulating kit, enough for five to six windows. Cost: $20. • Weatherstripping for windows, four 17-foot rolls. Cost: $20 ($5 each). • Replacement filter for central heat and air unit. Mike Kuhn, director of technical services at HouseMaster and author of The Pocket Idiot’s Guide to Home Inspection, says it’s a must to change your furnace and air conditioning filter on a regular basis, at least every three months or more often. “Clogged filters reduce heating and cooling efficiency and can reduce the useful life of the appliance,” says Kuhn. Cost: $10. • Door threshold/sweep strip (three) to fill air leaks beneath doors. Cost: $75 ($25 each). • Door gasket (three) to fill leaks around doors. Mark Furst of Grading Spaces, a home inspection and performance analysis company in Fort Atkinson, WI, recommends that homeowners check all exterior doors for tight-sealing gaskets. “I often see doors that only seal well when the door is slammed and then the deadbolt lock engages,” he says, blaming the condition on worn-out gaskets, though the doors themselves are still in good shape.“Adding a sweep strip to the bottom of the door helps to block drafts,” he adds. Cost: $75 ($25 each). $250 OR LESS • Home energy audit from your utility company. Most utility companies offer home energy audits to their customers. An inspector will visit your house and check the furnace and central air conditioning unit for efficiency and safety and leaks, gaps in attic and wall insulation, and the condition of your water heater and pipes. Remember, many home improvements are tax-deductible, especially where energy is concerned. Cost: $150 on average. • Install a programmable thermostat. Although thermostats can be adjusted manually, Bennett says that a programmable thermostat will avoid any discomfort by returning temperatures to normal

as you wake or return home. Cost: $35 to $100. • The chimney can be the number one source of heat loss in a house. Use a chimney balloon to prevent drafts from flowing through your chimney and prevent heat from escaping. Cost: $55 per fireplace. • Three rolls of fiberglass insulation to pack around basement doors, windows in unused rooms or around exterior windows, doors, and air conditioning units. Cost: $75 ($25/roll). $500 OR LESS For another $250, you can add: • An annual checkup, cleaning, and maintenance for your central heating and air unit and all air ducts. Cost: $250. • A ceiling fan that also heats the room. The Hunter Fan Company introduced a decorative ceiling fan that contains a small unit to provide a supplemental source of heat. The fan blades direct the heat towards the floor and help spread it throughout the room. Cost: $250. • Mark Furst says that one frequently overlooked spot is the sill box in the basement, which is on top of the foundation and under the floor. “This is one of the least insulated areas in a house,” he says. He likes to fill the gaps and leaks with a two-part spray foam to seal and insulate the whole space. Cost: $250. WINTERIZING FOR PRACTICALLY NOTHING You can get something for nothing. Here are some ways to winterize your house that are virtually free: • Roll up a towel or throw rug to close gaps at the bottom of all exterior doors, but leave the gaps on interior doors free to allow heat to circulate between rooms. • If you live in a snowy part of the country, bank the snow up against the house to provide a bit of insulation from the cold. • Jason Raddenbach of Chimney Balloon suggests clearing the lint from the outside dryer vent. Make sure the flap closes completely when the dryer isn’t running. And while you’re at it, he says, vacuum Continued on page 36

out the muck from the HVAC return vent covers. If air cannot escape the dryer because of restrictions in the vent pipe, it will have to run longer, using more electricity. • Mike Kuhn of HouseMaster recommends that homeowners flush the water heater through the drain valve to remove sediment, which “allows the gas or oil water heater to operate more efficiently and safely,” he says. • Make sure that ceiling fans move in a clockwise direction, which will push hot air along the ceiling

towards the floor. If they’re moving counterclockwise, their benefits are minimized. • Clean out your gutters. In cold weather climates, this will prevent icicles from forming. Get the water to go down the gutters—where it’s supposed to go—versus on the sidewalks, where you end up with dangerous icy patches. • The U.S. Department of Energy estimates you can save three percent on your energy bill for every degree you turn the thermostat down in the winter. In other words, for an annual heating and cooling bill of $1,000, if you move the thermostat down three degrees at night, you could save almost $100 each year. Follow these suggestions or use them as a springboard to improvise your own ideas for winterizing your home on a budget.

Sixth Annual Tucker’s Toy Run Celebrates Life by Giving Toys Submitted by MARIELLA MILLER
Dozens of Lehigh Valley motorcyclists took to the streets around noon on Nov. 5 as the Sixth Annual Tucker’s Toy Run again fulfilled its holiday mission: to bring smiles to children’s faces and to remember a beloved friend. Riders left the parking lot of the Tri-Boro Sportsmen Club in Northampton around noon and cruised into the main parking lot at St. Luke’s University Hospital in Fountain Hill just before 1 p.m. “My friends and colleagues will tell you I am not
often speechless, but I have no words to describe our gratitude for the generosity and kindness of the Tucker’s Toy Run riders,” Jennifer Janco, Chief of Pediatrics for St. Luke’s University Health Network, said. “The excitement of the event is something the children never forget.” As they arrived, some riders delivered toys to the pediatric unit inside the hospital, while others placed toys one-by-one in cribs set up in the parking lot. Some children who were well enough to step outside into

“It’s a Wonderful Life” at Northampton High School Submitted by ERICA BELOVICH
Based on Frank Capra’s classic film, Doug Rand’s adaptation of “It’s a Wonderful Life” remains true to its beloved origins. Starring veteran NHS senior actor Nick Longenbach in the role of George Bailey, made famous by Jimmy Stewart, with fellow senior Maya Costanzo starring as his wife Mary, this year’s NHS Theatre Company’s fall production promises to be an audience favorite. The story follows disillusioned George Bailey, as his guardian angel Clarence helps him learn the true value of his ordinary existence. The play brings back all of your favorite characters, from Bert the cop to Ernie the cab driver, to the beloved Uncle Billy and Mr. Martini with his brood of children and even the goat. The play runs November 17, 18 and 19 at 7 p.m. at Northampton Area High School’s auditorium, 1619 Laubach Avenue, Northampton. Admission is $10.50 for adults, $8.50 for students, seniors, staff and military. Tickets will be available at the door.

2nd Annual Mulligans, Memories & Mediums in Honor of Michael E. Kulp Raises over $20,000 in loving memory of Michael E. Kulp submitted by TAMARA KULP
…a little boy who brought so much spirit to life. The 2nd Annual Mulligans, Memories and Mediums event was held on September 24 at Blue Shamrock Golf Club in Palmerton. The event raised over $20,000. Monies went into the Michael E. Kulp Memorial Fund, Inc., a nonprofit 501c3 created to support children. Proceeds from this fund benefit Children’s Hospital at Lehigh Valley Hospital and scholarships /small schools (Charter, Christian, Catholic, etc.) for children who benefit from small school environments. This includes, but is not limited to, the Michael E. Kulp Scholarship Fund at Saint John Neumann Regional School in Palmerton. Any family who feels their child would thrive in a small school environment, but perhaps can’t afford it, should send their written request to Michael E. Kulp Memorial Fund, Inc. PO Box 342, Walnutport, PA 18088. Last year’s event monies went to the Child Life Department (which runs solely on donations) within Children’s Hospital at Lehigh Valley Health Network. Additional monies 50
went to Saint John Neumann Regional School, the Michael E. Kulp Scholarship Fund at SJNRS, The Circle of Seasons Charter School (Fogelsville), The Mercy Learning Center (Allentown), and The Hillside School (Macungie). Non-golfing participants were able to enjoy private mediumship readings with local mediums (Martha Peterson, Ashyn Flanagan, Roseann Turek, Cynthia Trocchio, Laura Ophoff, and Aly Greenstreet). Guests also had the opportunity to participate in painting at the pub with artist Paula Zelienka where moms and children painted “Dragonflies by Moonlight,” The dinner and social evening had 230 guests in attendance for announcement of the golf awards, door prizes, over 50 baskets for a Chinese Auction, a Silent Auction, announcement of the Bacon Recipe Contest winners and entertainment by the musical duo “Feelin’ Good.” After dinner and awards, 40 guests chose to participate in a mediumship gallery where Spiritual Evidential Medium Gloria Weichand brought messages through from the other side to the group. dinner guests received Hormel Real Bacon Pieces. Mike, Tamara and Mikell Kulp would like to thank all who supported this amazing event in Memory of Michael as it is in doing something good that we honor him. Donations in the way of event participation, event sponsorships, corporate sponsorships, business signs, signs in honor of departed loved ones, family and friends donations, basket and door prize donations, donation of talents, donation of items/gifts, and donation of time resulted in over $20,000. These donations all came from people who cared…a place of kindness and compassion…and will be used for the same. “We can think of no better way to honor our son and we thank each and every one of you for supporting us.” And last but not least the Kulp Family extends sincere gratitude to the volunteers who donated many hours of their time to make this event possible: Bill & Chris Hankee, Tim & Priscilla McGinley, Dave, Colleen, Lauryn, & Tracy Worman, Logan Ninos, Stacy Gogel, Tammy, Marissa (Herman) & Chris Miller, Teressa & Eva Schisler, Michele Paules, Kathy Kulp, Erin Gilsbach, Sara Gruber, Mike & Kim McGonigle, Joan Coslar, Stacy Gogel, Georgia Hodyl, Jen Bates and Alice Harper. Thank you to Blue Shamrock Golf Club for allowing us to host our event at your facility; and, many thanks to the dedicated staff who makes our event run smoothly and efficiently. Next year’s event will be held September 23, 2017 at Blue Shamrock Golf Club. Mark your calendars.
