From The Editor’s Desk. On my morning ride to work, from Lehighton to my office in Walnutport, I’m often struck by how beautiful the area around the Lehigh Gap is. Watching the sun come up over the farm fields in the Northern Lehigh Valley is a great way to start your day. We’re lucky to live in an area with such a strong tradition of agriculture, giving us easy access to healthy, farm fresh food. I was at Farm Aid on Saturday the 22nd, and the activists, farmers and artists I had the privilege to speak with got me thinking about how important our farmers are, not only to our economy, but also to the health of our communities. Willie Nelson started the annual concert in 1985 to help family farmers during the mid-80’s foreclosure crises, when many folks were losing their land. It’s a shame that 27 years later family farms are facing the same existential threats from industrial farming and natural disasters, like the drought that plagued much of the nation this past summer. Luckily, PA has a strong farming tradition, and in the Gazette’s coverage area there are a plethora of farmer’s markets to help get food from the farm onto your dinner table. If you aren’t taking advantage of them, you’re missing out on some of the best tasting produce you can get anywhere. It’s not always the most convenient option, but it’s the best option. Recently, a close friend, Carolyn Kaschak, who is currently teaching English at an elementary school in South Korea, told me about something interesting they do at her school. At the school she teaches in, and other schools like it, they maintain a community garden that they harvest to help get fresh vegetables into their school’s lunch programs. I know the issue of school lunches has been a controversial topic of late, and I’m not trying to posit an argument about compulsory healthy eating programs. However, I do think that teaching the youth about growing their own food and the benefits of healthy eating would be great for our communities, and might even inspire some kids to take up farming. I asked Carolyn about the program, this was her reply: Just 40 minutes south of Seoul, there is a smaller city called Osan. I work at the Elementary school near there called Hwaseong Elementary school. At the beginning of April, teachers, parents and students come together and plant various vegetables such as corn, lettuce, potatoes, pumpkins, peas, peppers, cabbage and tomatoes in our school garden. While the students are studying, volunteers pull weeds and care for the garden. Most afternoons, the principal can be
Joe Korba
seen doing his fair share of garden work. As soon as the vegetables are ripe, they are picked and put into the school lunch. Everyone is able to reap the rewards of having fresh, homegrown food.
Gardens like this one at Hwaseong Elementary in S. Korea teach children the importance of farming and fresh, healthy produce. There is an old Chinese proverb about fishing that I believe can be applied to teaching our youth to farm as well. “If you give a man a fish you feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish you feed him for a lifetime.”

Support The Children’s Christmas Gift Program
While it may seem too early to be thinking about Christmas, Friedens United Church of Christ has begun planning and sponsoring the Children’s Christmas Gift Program. In conjunction with the Northern Lehigh Pastoral Association and the Northern Lehigh Food Bank, Friedens Church will serve as the coordination and distribution site again this year. The mission of this program is to provide gifts to local children up to age 14 whose families are served by the Northern Lehigh Food Bank. For some children, these are the only gifts they may receive for Christmas. For others, it may mean a few more gifts that they receive. Whatever the case, these gifts mean so much to people who find themselves in bad economic times. Food Bank parents must register their children to be eligible to receive gifts. Sign-ups will be at the church on different days, different times and for several weeks in order to meet applicants’ schedules. The Food Bank will inform clients of the dates and provide further instructions on the process. Churches and organizations that would like to participate should send a representative, who will then serve as a contact person, to Friedens UCC on Saturday, Oct. 20 to let the committee know how many children they wish to sponsor. Names of children and their gift suggestions will be available for pick up on November 3 at 10am. Families and individuals wishing to sponsor a child may call the church at 610-767-7099 and leave a message. State your name, a number where you can be reached and the reason for calling. Someone will return your call as soon as possible. Gifts must be new, wrapped, and tagged when delivered to the church on Saturday, December 15 between 8:00am and 11:00am. Distribution to the families will be Saturday December 15, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at Friedens Church. Due to safety issues, no bicycles or skateboards will be accepted. There will be a limit of three gifts per child and each item should not exceed $20.00. . Help is also needed on the day of the distribution. A few young people are needed to be “runners”. Perhaps your group would be interested in this as a community service project. The Children’s Christmas Gift Program has brightened the lives of local children at the holidays for many years. Last year one of the people who was dropping off gifts for a child remarked that years ago when she was a child, she had received gifts from this program and now that she was able, it was her turn to give back. The people of the Northern Lehigh area are very caring, giving people and we pray that you can find it in your heart to touch the life of a child at this advent season filled with love and joy.

Dear Old White and Blue – 75 Years Later By: Alice Wanamaker Mable (German) Geiger thinks back to her years at Slatington High School with delight. She remembers the school at the top of the hill and the friends she made while there. “I came to school on the Berksey,” Mable remembered her daily trip on the train that brought students from all over the area to Slatington High School. “We used the steps to get in from the train tracks, we came from under the bridge.” Memories like those of the Berskey, football games against rivals Palmerton and of their class trip to New York City were shared as Mable and four of her classmates from Slatington High School Class of 1937 gathered at Susie’s in Slatington for their 75th reunion last month. Mable, Arlene (Kerschner) Oswald, Catherine (Edwards) Ibbotson, Marie (Henry) Weida, and Robert Eroh have all seen their 90th birthdays come and gone. They all recalled a memory or two of the “Dear Old White and Blue” while they met for their annual reunion lunch. Accompanied by a child or niece, the group vowed that this would be their last reunion when they first sat down for lunch. “There were supposed to be seven us,” Robert said of the small group, “But we are the Fantastic Five who showed up.” They are the same five that has been meeting for years at the Terrace in Walnutport until its closure two years ago. While no one was quite sure how many of their classmates are still alive, they remembered the 94 who made it to graduation in the school auditorium. They also remembered their Principal Mr. Snyder … or was it Leidich? “No, Leidich followed Snyder,” of this Robert was sure! The classmates haven’t moved too far from their Alma Mater: living in Germansville, Kempton, Palmerton and Walnutport. They each have lead full lives including living through the Great Depression and marrying. Arlene and Mable both gave that up to be farmer’s wives. Marie worked in the kitchen at Zettlemoyer Auction House for years and went on to be a housewife. Robert joined the United States Army, as most young men did at that time. He served during WWII with the Army Engineers in France and other overseas locations. When he returned, he too married and later worked at the A&P grocery store. The class fondly looked back at being the first ones in the high school to have a yearbook, which cost only 25 cents at the time. They remembered football games, which didn’t begin until their junior year. The team was so unprepared they lost their first game 77-0. And as a reminder of how long ago it was when the “Fantastic Five” walked the halls of the now demolished SHS, they talked of the separate entrances to the school for girls and for boys. By the end of their luncheon and social hour, the 37’ Slater’s decided that they hadn’t had enough time to reminisce and that another luncheon was needed next year and every year that classmates could make it out.

Pet Page Jenner
German Shepherd Dog Size: Large Age: Adult Sex: Male Jenner is a sweet dog who was the victim of a horrible owner. His owner moved and just dumped him out the door of his apartment and left. Jenner had been hanging around the apartments for days waiting for them to come back but it never happened so some of our great volunteers took it upon themselves to catch this poor now stray dog and find him a great new home with owners that won't throw him away. Needless to say he didn't want to come with any of them at first and would take off running, but with persistence he was finally caught and now laying in a nice warm bed with food and water instead of being stuck outdoors fending for himself.

Blue Mtn. League Announces Hall-of-Fame Selections League Founded 1946 Incorporated 1947 Hall of Fame Established 1984 The Blue Mountain League Hall-of-Fame is pleased to announce their selections for induction to the BML Hall-of-Fame for 2012. The Committee (O.R. Pacchioli, Chairman; Bob Schuster, Secretary-Treasurer; John Bioco, Jack Kinney, Mike Mihalik, George Pitsilos, Tim Schwarz, Tom Stoudt, Sr. and Paul Zellner) made their selections from a slate of 54 nominations. The 2012 selections: Lester Dietz: One of the pioneers of the Blue Mountain League. Lester played for Roseto, West Bangor and Martins Creek among other teams. A fine outfielder who hit well, and was a true team leader. Ted DeLong: Ted played eleven seasons in the BML for some of the best teams in league history. A perennial all-star first baseman, Ted was a consistently high average hitter before moving away from the area, driving in countless clutch runs. Played during the wood era for most of his career, Ted hit .313 with wood bats. Scot Engler: In a 16 year career, Scot batted .340, with 106 homeruns (one of only 9 players in League history with 100+ homeruns) and 419 RBIs for Saylorsburg, the Andretti (later Lower
Nazareth) Phillies and Hellertown Royals. Mike Reenock: A .403 lifetime hitter pretty much describes Mike’s strengths. The 1999 batting champion (55 for 122, .451), Mike played a solid outfield for the Lehigh Township Pirates, the Northampton Giants, Martins Creek and the Lower Nazareth Phillies. Eric Reiter: Eric was an RBI machine during his 19 year career with Martins Creek, Hellertown and the MCS Cardinals. A career .373 hitter, Eric drove in 478 runs, and hit 86 home runs. He was the All-League second baseman in 1999, and the All-League DH in 2005. Also to be honored will be a Blue Mountain League team from the past, so honored for their accomplishments. This year’s team is the 1985 Bethlehem Red Sox, which won 27 or 30 games, and captured the League Championship. A banquet/reunion honoring the new members of the Blue Mountain League Hall-of-Fame, and all past inductees will be held on Thursday, October 18, at the Holy Family Sick & Relief Hall, Nazareth. Tickets are priced at $30.00 per person, and are available from any Hall-of-Fame Committee member, or by calling O.R. Pacchioli (610-2583582) or Bob Schuster (610-691-0200).

West End Playground Organizational Meeting All interested residents and neighbors to the West End Playground in Slatington are urged to attend an organizational meeting on Tuesday October 9th beginning at 7 p.m. at the Assumption BVM Catholic Church, 623 W. Washington Street, Slatington. The goal of the meeting will be to form a new West End Playground Association. Over the past few months, improvements have been made to the playground area. New swings were purchased and installed, the basketball court lines were repainted and new nets added. Old, outdated bleachers were removed, and the refreshment stand was cleaned. Currently more security lighting is being looked into, and a street light near the refreshment stand has been fixed. Other improvements and activities are being planned, but the next step is to form an association to take care of the day to day operations of the playground. The Slatington Parks & Recreation Commission has been working with local residents and
the Borough of Slatington to help improve the playground, and they will host the reorganizational meeting. For more information call (610) 554-4099.

Habitat for Humanity
By Christina Raubenhold Habitat for Humanity of the Lehigh Valley is a non-profit organization located in Allentown with a mission of providing affordable homes for hardworking, disadvantages families. Since being founded in 1989, Habitat has built or rehabilitated more than 954 homes in the Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton areas. With the acquisition of a property located on Franklin Street in Slatington, Habitat has expanded into our local area. The Home, located at 548 W. Franklin Street, was generously donated to Habitat Lehigh Valley. In addition, the affiliate received a Community Development Block Grant to rehabilitate the home as part of its Neighborhood Revitalization effort for the Slatington area. Habitat Lehigh Valley is searching for a partner family for the rehabilitated home on Franklin Street before work can begin on the home. Interested families who wish to partner with Habitat have to meet four basic criteria to qualify: A need for adequate, affordable shelter, ability to pay, willingness to partner, have lived in the Lehigh Valley for at least 12 months. If you are someone you know is interested and meets the criteria, you can find more information and an application at http://www.habitatlehighvalley.org. You can stop

You know you are from a farm town, when….. During a storm you check the cattle before you check the kids. You can tell the difference between a horse and a cow from a distance. Your car breaks down outside of town and news of it gets back to town before you do. You don’t buy all your vegetables at the grocery store. There’s a tornado warning and the whole town is outside watching for it. The local gas station sells live bait. You go to the State Fair for your family vacation.

The Teeth Book” to each first and second grade classroom in the Northampton Area School District. National Dental Hygiene Month acts as resource person in conjunction with the science and health curriculum at that level. She is invited each year to be the guest speaker for all the tenth grade health classes where she covers teenage dental issues such as oral piercing and tattoos, whitening products, wisdom teeth, and tobacco use. Every lesson stresses the importance of proper brushing and flossing as well as the relationship of healthy teeth and gums to overall health. She has partnered with the PTA’s as well as local dentists who supply toothbrushes to every elementary student. Mrs. Arcury also participates in the district’s Health Fair and Career Day to
get the word out about the importance of dental health. Thank you Mrs. Arcury for keeping the K-Kids smiles healthy and bright!!!

October 7,1954 Last week we said we would write later about a big festival we attended one evening the week before. I want to keep my promise. Many Pennsylvania Dutch belong to the Lutheran Church, many are Reformed [today, UCC], many Moravians, and some call themselves Amish, others Mennonite, and down near Philadelphia are many Schwenkfelders. I want to tell you about the latter group this week. They were a group of people that also left Germany when a big discussion and fight was taking place over there over which would be the right way to worship and serve God. There was a group of 171 people that came to Philadelphia on a ship called St. Andrew in the year 1734. In the old land their leader was Casper Schwenckfeld; so they became known as Schwenkfelders. A while after they were landed, they held a feast to give thanks to God. Many years have come and gone since that first thanksgiving feast, but that feast would be celebrated every year on the 24th September. They have a meal at the church at noon and evenings on the day. At that meal they have only bread, apple butter and butter. They also have a church service in the afternoon and evening on that day. There are five Schwenkfelder congregations: Philadelphia, Norristown, Palm, Worcester and Lansdale. A wonderful church building was built many years ago at Worcester, and they come together there to celebrate this feast. It would take too long here to describe the appearance of that church building. The majority of Schwenkfelders can speak the Dialect and are fine people to get to know. [Recent Schwenkfelder records note that this day is still commemorated, but there are a few factual differences from the above information. According to their records, 180 people arrived in 1734, and the meal is comprised of bread, apple butter and water.]

Touring Germany: Rothenburg and Salzburg By Chrissy Zopf Editorial Intern I awoke early on June 29, earlier than any of the other girls. It was 6:30 a.m. and I already knew I wouldn't be able to sleep on the way to the first stop of the day, Rothenburg, because it would be a short ride. Once we departed shortly after 8 a.m. it finally hit me that my time in Germany was rapidly coming to a close. Rothenburg is a medieval city, still encased by the wall that surrounded it hundreds of years ago. One memory that vividly stays with me was ascending the wall to view the city and walk around the perimeter. I can still feel my knees shaking and my heart racing with fear. Heights never were my strong suit. I clung to the wall, terrified every time someone from the other direction would pass and I would have to pull away from my safety net. One thing I did notice while attached to the wall, were special stones placed with names and locations of people from all over the world who had donated to the wall's upkeep. The one that I found the most interesting was from our own Lehigh Valley. Our visit to Rothenburg didn't last long, and soon we were boarding the bus again, this time for a five hour ride to Salzburg, Austria where we would be spending the night. I can't say much

about the bus ride there, as I slept most of the time. But when I was awake, I spent the time asking everyone what country we were in; no one seemed to know the answer. Finally I saw the road sign stating our entry into Austria. After more countryside traveling we finally arrived in the city. Salzburg was beautiful, and would easily become my favorite stop of the tour. When we arrived at our hostel we were given time to freshen up before meeting in the lobby to go spend time in the city. Unlike Bad Windsheim, everything was open, even as the night went on. Also unlike Bad Windsheim, almost every other business was a restaurant. My friends and I wandered down the cobblestone streets, looking for an eatery, but failing to agree on one. Of course after some time, we did agree, and after our meal we went back to the meeting spot, waiting to head back to the hostel. That night I roomed with two close friends of mine, Rachel and Chloe. Although there was a 10 o'clock lights out rule, we disregarded this and stayed awake until early hours of the morning, talking and laughing, enjoying what was left of our trip. Early the next morning our group met in the lobby and headed out to the Hohensalzburg Fortress. Although it wasn't even 9 a.m. it was hot,

That afternoon we departed the city of Salzburg, heading towards the salt mines where we would be taking a tour. Extra Point by Tyler Trumbauer
Mid-Season Football Report Card Palmerton
Offense: D Defense: B Special Teams: C Overall: C Comments: The Blue Bombers are a young, struggling team. Coach Walkowiak sees their defense as a positive however, “Our defense has been giving us numerous opportunities to compete and win games.” Offensive woes are the killer for Palmerton, but they are still searching for that first win.
Northampton
Offense: B Defense: C Special Teams: B Overall: B Comments: Northampton
surprised the LVC world as they have amounted a 2-3 record under first year coach, Jeff Brosky. The K-Kids’ fate is still up in the air as they haven’t found consistency on the field. Brosky told me on the phone last week that he wants equal improvement all around his roster. If Northampton can do just that, they can be serious contenders when it is all said and done.
Parkland
Offense: B Defense: B Special Teams: B Overall: B Comments: Head Coach, Jim Morgans, football team has gone through a roller coaster first half of the season. The 3-2 Trojans have had some trouble with ball security, but they are improving. Morgans continued to say, “I think limiting our turnovers and stupid penalties, will allow us to get better throughout the season.” Parkland does have some tough battles coming up, but if this group matures, they should be able to notch more wins.

Comments: Inconsistency is plaguing the Tigers this season. Surprisingly, Northwestern’s special teams are above average for a Colonial League school. With all that being said, head coach Josh Snyder, praises his defense, “Our offense hasn’t helped out our defense much this season...Our defense has been fairly inconsistent as well, but I think our defense is fine. We have done a lot to tweak it and improve it as we go.” Northwestern is 2-3 after the first half, but they are now facing their back-loaded schedule that consists of Pen Argyl, Catty and Bangor. That road will be tough, but it will show a lot about this team.
Northern Lehigh:
Offense: D Defense: D Special Teams: D Overall: D Comments: The Indians are led by first year head coach, Tom McCaroll. This young squad is going through learning curves and growing pains right along with McCaroll as the season progresses. Unfortunately, there hasn’t been much production on the field. The defense has had major troubles containing opponents and the offense can barely muster any points. That lackluster combination makes the special teams almost obsolete. 2012 isn’t the year of Lehighton.
Offense: B Defense: C Special Teams: D Overall: C Comments: The Bulldogs have a back-loaded schedule of their own that consists of Catty, Pen Argyl and Bangor. The Bulldogs have said that they don’t need to rebuild, but just reload every season. This season seems like the weakest team in recent history. This roster has potential and at times, they play some great football, but they aren’t as dominant as years past. I expect them to lose to some of the Colonial League elite and fall in the standings as the playoffs draw near.
