MEET THE STAFF What is your greatest Halloween memory? My mom always made candy apples for trick-ortreat, everyone made sure to stop by for one. They were so delicious, it’s a shame that you can’t trust to give out or receive candy apples anymore. Everyone always went to the Redline’s house also. Mrs. Redline would dress up as a witch and sit in front of a big kettle and stir it and not say a word, we all knew it was her but we were so scared. Kathy Marsh, Associate Publisher My best friend Debbie had a Halloween party when I was 5 months pregnant with my daughter years ago. We rented costumes for this party and I was a pregnant clown and my husband was a bird with a huge beak. Best Halloween Party ever considering I love Trick-or-Treat decorations and all but hate to wear costumes or get dressed up for this occasion. Donna Bachman, Accounting Manager When I was in seventh grade my mom gave me a perm and I ended up having an allergic reaction to the chemicals and my entire face blew up. Well
that night was trick-or-treat night (that was the last year I went, I swear), so I had to wear a trucker hat to hide my face. I ended up going as a plumber and was really embarrassed the whole night. Catherine Stroh, Publishing Assistant When I was in 6th grade, I had a Halloween party at my house. Little did I know that my parents were taking it one step further, they had the basement all set up without me knowing a thing of their plans. When my guests arrived, they were carefully escorted one by one, (blindfolded) down the stairs and through an array of icky, ooey, yucky gooey items my parents had arranged on a table to be felt, but not seen by us kids. It was a blast! I was amazed that they secretly planned it so well and never let on at all! Christine Stroh, Account Executive It was just two years ago when my kids weren’t old enough to realize that I took most of their candy and ate it myself. They’re on to me now though... Construction on Veteran’s Memorial Begins – Donations Still Being Accepted submitted by ROBERT STETTNER
After almost a year and a half of planning and several months of fund raising, construction has begun on the Slatington Veteran’s Memorial at Slatington Memorial Park, located at Second and Main Streets. After an overwhelming response from the public in the form of donations and engraved brick sales, the Veteran’s Memorial Committee was able to hire several local contractors who began work on the memorial the week of October 3. Even though the committee faces a tight construction schedule, it shall be completed in time for the scheduled dedication on Friday, October 11 – Veterans Day. The Slatington Veteran’s Memorial Committee has met and surpassed its original goal of raising $40,000 for the memorial. Through thousands of dollars in regular donations, memorial donations and the sale of over 600 engraved bricks, the fundraising goal was met in a few short months. However, more donations are needed and will be accepted. A few unanticipated expenses, along with some construction estimates that were more than expected, have the committee still seeking additional funding. Engraved bricks are still being accepted for the project, however, the committee cannot guarantee they will be engraved and installed by the date of the memorial dedication. Every effort will be made to install engraved brick orders received after the original deadline in a timely manner. Those interested in making a donation to the memorial can make a check payable to: the Northern Lehigh Historical Society, and mail to Slatington Veteran’s Memorial Committee, P.O. Box 224, Slatington, PA 18080. Forms for engraved bricks are available at the three Northern Lehigh area Municipal offices, the Slatington Library and select
area businesses. For more information or questions please contact David Altrichter at 610-767-5519 or ddacreat@ptd.net. The Memorial Committee greatly appreciates the community’s support to this project.

Woman’s Club of Slatington Fall Fun Submitted by DEBBIE BARHIGHT
The Woman’s Club began the new club year in September with a covered dish social. Two new members were welcomed. The club continues its strong and longstanding commitment to beautify the Northern Lehigh Community by planting and maintaining the flower beds at both welcome signs; Victory Park and at the bridge trailhead. The club would like to express our gratitude to David Lienhard for his invaluable assistance on these projects as well as maintenance at the Springside Fishpond area. If you pass by that same area, you may see the Woman’s Club merry band of scarecrows all ready to welcome fall. The club promotes the arts, so if our display has inspired you, we would love to see your version around town! We participated at the Walnutport Canal Festival with our delicious “Walk-Along Taco.” Our October meeting features a talk by David Altrichter about the new Veterans Memorial being built in Slatington. Keeping with our goal to support and improve our community by working together while having fun, we invite any woman 18 years and over to join us at our monthly meetings. Interesting topics and great refreshments ensure
a fun night out! Meetings are held the third Monday of each month at 7 p.m. For more information please call 610-767-7929 or 610-767- 9436.

where there is nothing. It is just a trick which is used to fool people, especially such people who want to be very smart, but by nature are a little naive. This business goes thus: A group of people take a fellow out in the country on a bitter cold night and say they want to catch elbedritsches. The fellow must take a sack along. They make him stand in some isolated area and hold the bag open; then they will go away, saying they want to start the elbedritsch moving and chase them into the bag. But instead of that, they go directly home and let that poor fellow standing out in that area until he is almost frozen to death. Eventually he goes home and now knows what catching elbedritsches is about. Then he is thoroughly made fun of and ostracized(?) until he is very angry. Sometimes this elbedritsch hunting turns out differently than the people expected. It happened like that one time in Lehigh County. Here had been a man (We will call him Sam J…) who was not quite as smart as some others, and the shoe maker and a couple of others agreed, that they wanted to fool him. They were together in the shop and decided, that they would want to go out elbedritsch hunting, and Sam would hold the sack. He was also willing to go along with that. It was completely, dreadfully Continued on page 22

cold. Sam held the sack at that isolated spot and the others went away to drive the elbedritsch [to him]. Of course they went straight home and left Sam standing there. He thought the elbedritsch must have eaten them. When he had held the bag a half hour and was almost frozen stiff, he started out also on the way home. It was rather dark out there. On the way he came upon some living creature alongside the road. Sam thought this must be an elbedritsch, quickly opened his sack, and

indeed caused this critter to enter it. It kicked intensely and Sam was sure , that he had an elbedritsch. With the sack on his back he went with long strides back to the shop, where the other fellows were waiting for him. When he opened the door, they called [out], “Well, Sam, did you catch an elbedritsch?” He replied, “Yes, by golly, I have; he is in the sack here.” Soon he emptied out the sack on the floor of the shop and it was a skunk! One can think of the result himself. A skunk is always a skunk. Now the laugh was on the other fellows, and the shoemaker could not get into his shop for a long period of time. That was the first and last elbedritsch hunt on which he went along. An adage says: Whoever laughs last, laughs the best. years published the Standard German newspaper, Der Republikaner von Berks. During that time period he also produced the Hausfreund for the Reformed Church and founded The Reformed Church Record. Miller also published two important volumes of PA German literature, Pennsylvania German, vol. 1, 2nd ed, 1904, and vol. 2, 1911. The poetry and some of the prose therein were from other publications of that time. The remaining prose articles were from the dialect columns which Miller himself wrote in his newspaper and those periodicals. (The story included here was from volume 1.)] [So, what are these elbedritsches that we find in areas where the Pennsylvania Dutch first settled in America? Well they are simply descendants of Elwetritsche. And what are Elwetritsche? The Elwetritsche are birdlike mythical creatures which are reported to be found in southwest Germany, especially in the Palatinate (from where most of the Dutch emigrated). They are fictional creatures that are described as being chicken-like, but with antlers. They also have scales instead of feathers. However, it is said that their wings are of little use. That is why they live mainly in underbrush and under vines. Elwetritsche supposedly originate from crossbreeding chickens, ducks, and geese with

mythical wood creatures such as goblins and elves. So goes the traditional explanation from the Palatinate for the creature which is the focus of the elbedritsch hunt. And at some point in time this phrase, elbedritsch hunt, fell in with the phrase for the legitimate hunt of a real bird which is found here and also in other parts of the world, the snipe. Snipe hunting is the term most people would now use to describe the tomfoolery in Miller’s article. And I am sure many have heard similar stories or even been victims of the snipe hunt ruse. COLLEGE CORNER
LCCC Receives Grant for the Air Products Community Internship Program submitted by DENISE M. REIFINGER
Lehigh Carbon Community College will receive a grant for support of the Air Products Community Internship Program in 2017. The grant will provide $10,000 a year for the next two years to facilitate the Air Products College Interns of the Allentown Program, which began in the summer of 2015. It was initially awarded by the Air Products Foundation to establish internship programs with downtown Allentown organizations to help support the revitalization initiative.
Blue Mountain Fish & Game Association 4190 Wood Dr., P.O. Box 99 Walnutport, PA 18088
Under the internship agreement students can choose credit or noncredit experiences. Each student who participates in the program is paid a stipend totaling $1,250 for 140 hours of service. They receive two payments of $625. One payment is given after 70 hours of the internship is completed and the second payment of $625 is paid upon completion of the remaining 70 hours. The college’s Career Development Department works with potential candidates and then recommends a number of students they feel will be a good fit for the participating organizations. The program has proven to give students experiences and skills that will be useful in the workforce. The interns who are chosen for the program learn a variety of competencies at the job site, including valuable experiences involving team work, conflict resolution, and proper work etiquette. The program provides valuable assistance to local non-profit organizations by supplying them with an extra staff member who is motivated and looking forward to learning the most they can from this worthwhile experience. For more information, or to apply for the internship grant, contact Tina Moyer, Director of Career Development Services at cmoyer@lccc.edu or 610-799-1136.

He is crate trained, however, he currently runs loose in the house and has not been destructive. He is an independent dog who likes to hang around the family, but also likes to lie down by himself. He enjoys lying out on the back deck as well. Hawkeye really enjoys squeaky toys and would love a home to fill a toy basket full of them for him! He will play fetch with his toys. Hawkeye likes to play the "catch

me if you can" game in his fenced in foster home! Check out a video of him on our Facebook page! He is a quiet guy who doesn't really bark or howl. He enjoys hanging out at outdoor restaurants and meeting new friends (see his pictures on Facebook!). Hawkeye is neutered and up to date on shots. He is microchipped. Hawkeye is ready to be adopted! He has been with our rescue since January 29, 2016!! Let's get Hawkeye in his forever home!

Poetry Reading and Discussion Period with Local Poet Paul Martin submitted by WANDA OWENS
The Slatington Public Library's book club hosted a poetry reading and discussion period with local poet Paul Martin. Mr. Martin resided on Canal Street in Walnutport for many years until the family moved to Palmerton. He graduated from Palmerton High School and earned his Bachelor of Arts from St. Francis College in Loretta, Pennsylvania. He obtained his Masters degree at Niagara University in Niagara Falls, New York. His book "Closing Distances" (2009) has been a National Poetry Series finalist twice, and his recent book "Rooms for the
Living"(2013) was a co-winner of the 2012 "Coal Hill Review Chapbook Prize.” Mr. Martin was awarded the “Pennsylvania Council of the Arts Fellowship” twice, and his poems continue to be published in many literary journals and anthologies. Mr. Martin teaches part-time and lives in Ironton with his wife Rita. Mr. Martin read from his published works, and he delighted the audience with a preview of some new poems that he has just completed. The poetry was read with passion and emotion that seemed to

transport the listener to Canal Street, the banks of the Lehigh, and the ravaged city of Aleppo. Spontaneous applause rang out after many of the readings. Mr. Martin seemed to be able to connect with the those in attendance in a special way. He spoke of his family, childhood in Walnutport, and Slovak heritage with humor and love. He had the ability to paint a vivid picture of events with poetic words. You could tell that he was an excellent educator, because he wanted poetry to be enjoyed for its inherent beauty, without having to be over analyzed. He spoke of a student in one of his classes that did not like poetry, but when he met him years later he was shocked to have the man recite an entire poem from memory.
Mr. Martin read his final selection, and the group in attendance was anxious to continue the experience by purchasing some of his publications. The author donated "Floating on the Lehigh" to the Slatington Library's collection, and the day concluded with refreshments and a tour of the library. Mr Martin commented on the beauty of our facility, and he hoped that we could find a benefactor to finance the use of the upper floors of the building. The Slatington Public Library encourages the public to read Mr Martin's works. Anyone who is familiar with Walnutport, Slatington, and Palmerton will appreciate the way he captures the history of the area with beauty, humor, and style. He is indeed our local poet laureate.

Mock Presidential Election at Northwestern Lehigh Middle School submitted by JENNIFER HOLMAN
Northwestern Lehigh Middle School students in grades 6, 7, 8 will participate in a mock presidential election on Monday, November 7, 2016. The purpose of the school-wide election will be for our students to experience the electoral process by tallying election results by homerooms, and then comparing the outcome in terms of popular votes and electoral votes. The bulletin board displayed in the school’s main foyer will be the focal point for election results. At three times during the school day on November 7, 2016, voting outcomes will be announced schoolwide and recorded on the bulletin board. A United States outline map, central in the display, has been divided into 26 sections to represent the school’s 26 homerooms. As the results are posted throughout the day, each of the sections will be shaded red or blue to reflect the assignment of electoral votes. Grade level homerooms have been assigned different amounts of electoral votes with 8th grade homerooms having 25 electoral votes, 7th grade homerooms having 21, and 6th grade homerooms having 16. Four additional homerooms (for other student groups) have been assigned electoral votes as well. The intent of assigning different amounts of electoral votes to grade level homerooms is to mimic the fact that each of the 50 states have various amounts of votes based on their population. Through this school election, the social studies teachers intend to provide instruction focused on

2. In a large bowl, toss together flour, salt, baking powder and soda, 1 ½ tsp. cinnamon and pumpkin pie spice. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix together. The dough will be very soft. Fold in cinnamon chips. Cover dough and chill for 30 minutes or up to three days. Chilling is a must. 3. Take dough out. Preheat oven to 350. Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper. 4. Roll the dough into balls. Mix together remaining ½ c. of sugar and ½ tsp. of cinnamon. Roll each dough ball into mixture and arrange on baking sheets. Slightly flatten the balls; they will only slightly spread during baking. 5. Bake for 8-10 minutes. The cookies will look very soft and under baked, however don’t bake them for longer as they will dry out. Tis the season for pumpkin! Pumpkin bread is usually my go-to so I decided to try something different this year. These cookies were pretty yummy and extremely easy to make. I love cinnamon, so the cinnamon chips appealed to me very much. Unfortunately, the cinnamon chips, which can be found at Wegman’s, sounded better in theory. If I made these cookies again, I wouldn’t add the full ⅔ cup.

Fall Maintenance Checklist By Houselogic.com
You’ll be ready for winter’s worst and head off pricey repairs with these simple preventative tasks. When the last of summer’s heat is a faint memory, and you’re pulling out your hoodies more than your shorts, it’s time to tackle a few simple chores that’ll make winter more pleasant and prevent some nasty surprises next spring. #1 Stow Your Mower If you’re not familiar with fuel stabilizer, get to know it. If your mower sits for months with gas in its tank, the gas will slowly deteriorate, which can damage internal engine parts. Fuel stabilizer ($10 for a 10-ounce bottle) prevents gas from degrading. Add stabilizer to your gasoline can to keep spare gas in good condition over the winter, and top off your mower tank with stabilized gas before you put it away for the winter. Run the mower for five minutes to make sure the stabilizer reaches the carburetor.Another lawn mower care method is to run your mower dry before stowing it. 1. When the mower is cool, remove the spark plug and pour a capful of engine oil into the spark plug hole. 2. Pull the starter cord a couple of times to
40
distribute the oil, which keeps pistons lubricated and ensures an easy start come spring. 3. Turn the mower on its side and clean out accumulated grass and gunk from the mower deck. #2 Don't Be a Drip Remove garden hoses from outdoor faucets. Leaving hoses attached can cause water to back up in the faucets and in the plumbing pipes just inside your exterior walls. If freezing temps hit, that water could freeze, expand, and crack the faucet or pipes. Make this an early fall priority, so a sudden cold snap doesn’t sneak up and cause damage. Turn off any shutoff valves on water supply lines that lead to exterior faucets. That way, you’ll guard against minor leaks that may let water enter the faucet. While you’re at it, drain garden hoses and store them in a shed or garage. #3 Put Your Sprinklers to Sleep Time to drain your irrigation system. Even buried irrigation lines can freeze, leading to busted pipes and broken sprinkler heads. 1. Turn off the water to the system at the main valve. 2. Shut off the automatic controller. 3. Open drain valves to remove water from the system. 4. Remove any above-ground sprinkler heads and shake the water out of them, then replace. If you don’t have drain valves, then hire an irrigation professional to blow out the systems pipes with compressed air. It is worth the $75 to $150 charge to make sure the job is done right, and to ensure you don’t have busted pipes and sprinkler head repairs to make in the spring. #4 Seal the Deal Grab a couple of tubes of color-matched exterior caulk ($5 for a 12-ounce tube) and make a journey around your home’s exterior, sealing up cracks between trim and siding, around window and door frames, and where pipes and wires enter your house. Preventing moisture from getting inside your walls is one of the least expensive — and most important — of your fall maintenance jobs. You’ll also seal air leaks that waste energy. Pick a nice day when temps are above 50 degrees so caulk flows easily. #5 De-Gunk Your Gutters Clogged rain gutters can cause ice-dams, which can lead to expensive repairs. After the leaves have fallen, clean your gutters to remove leaves, twigs, and gunk. Make sure gutters aren’t sagging and trapping water; tighten gutter hangers and

downspout brackets. Replace any worn or damaged gutters and downspouts. If you find colored grit from asphalt roof shingles in your gutters, beware. That sand-like grit helps protect shingles from the damaging ultraviolet rays of the sun. Look closely for other signs of roof damage (#5, below); it may be time for a roofing replacement. Your downspouts should extend at least 5 feet away from your house to prevent foundation problems. If they don’t, add downspout extensions; $10 to $20 each. #6 Eyeball Your Roof If you have a steep roof or a multistory house, stay safe and use binoculars to inspect your roof from the ground. Look for warning signs: Shingles that are buckled, cracked, or missing; rust spots on flashing. Any loose, damaged, or missing shingles should be replaced immediately. Black algae stains are just cosmetic, but masses of moss and lichen could signal roofing that’s decayed underneath. Call in a professional roofer for a $50 to $100 evaluation. A plumbing vent stack usually is flashed with a rubber collar — called a boot — that may crack or loosen over time. They’ll wear out before your roof does, so make sure they’re in good shape. A professional roofer will charge $75 to $150 to replace a boot, depending on how steep your roof is. #7 Direct Your Drainage Take a close look at the soil around

your foundation and make sure it slopes away from your house at least 6 vertical inches over 10 feet. That way, you’ll keep water from soaking the soils around your foundation, which could lead to cracks and leaks. Be sure soil doesn’t touch your siding. #8 Check Your Furnace Schedule an appointment with a heating and cooling professional to get your heating system checked and tuned up for the coming heating season. You’ll pay $50 to $100 for a checkup. An annual maintenance contract ensures you’re at the top of the list for checks, and shaves 20% off the cost of a single visit. Change your furnace filters, too. This is a job you should do every two months anyway, but if you haven’t, now’s the time. If your HVAC includes a built-in humidifier, make sure the contractor replaces that filter. #9 Prune Plants Late fall is the best time to prune plants and trees — when the summer growth cycle is over. Your goal is to keep limbs and branches at least 3 feet from your house so moisture won’t drip onto roofing and siding, and to prevent damage to your house exterior during high winds. For advice on pruning specific plants in your region, check with your state extension service.
