Mako Helps to Secure Grants for Slatington, Walnutport submitted by Tracy Polovick
Rep. Zach Mako (R-Lehigh/Northampton) today announced the release of $450,000 in state funds to the borough of Slatington and the Walnutport Water and Sewer Authority for water and sewer line upgrades. Mako advocated for the funding through the state’s Commonwealth Financing Authority’s Small Water and Sewer Program. The Pennsylvania Small Water and Sewer Program offers grants for small water and sewer infrastructure projects and can be used to assist with the construction, improvement,

expansion, or rehabilitation or repair of a water supply or sanitary sewer system. “Aging water and sewer lines can pose risks to residents,”Mako said.“It is vital that we do all we can to ensure clean drinking water is available. I’m pleased to help support both of these projects.” The borough of Slatington’s $250,000 grant will replace 1,800 linear feet of a deteriorating main on Shadow Oaks Lane with a six-inch ductile iron pipe. The existing water line is 60 years old and in very poor condition. The new water line will reduce or eliminate leaks and possible infiltration and contamination, all leading to improved water. Twenty-four service lines and four fire hydrants also will be installed along the water line. The Walnutport Water and Sewer Authority’s $200,000 grant will replace the water main and service lines along South Canal Street and bore a new water main that services Lehigh Street under the historic Lehigh Canal. The current water main running under the canal has been in service since the 1900s and has suffered numerous breaks. In addition, the age of the lines increases the possibility that these lines contain lead, elevating the need for replacement.

Get ready for fall allergies because they're headed your way submitted by acaai
A few simple tips will keep you sneeze and wheeze-free this fall. You’ve just gotten your summer routine dialed in, and you have to think about how to keep fall allergies at bay? Yes. But the good news is if you start planning now, your allergy symptoms will likely be much less severe, and you’ll be able to enjoy the beauty the fall season brings. “Fall can arrive with bad allergy symptoms,” says allergist Bradley Chipps, MD, president of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. “Many people don’t realize if they spend time preparing now, they won’t get hit as hard with sneezing, runny noses and itchy eyes when fall allergies descend with full force. It’s a matter of planning ahead for what you know is coming based on your past experiences.” Here are four tips to help you keep fall allergy symptoms from ruining hayrides and enjoying the changing leaves: Fall? Warm temps make us think it’s still summer – The coming of fall doesn’t automatically mean cool weather. Unseasonably warm weather for longer
periods of time is no longer a rare occurrence. Mild temperatures along with rain can promote plant and pollen growth, while wind accompanying rainfall can stir pollen and mold into the air, heightening symptoms for fall allergy sufferers. Because fall allergies may start earlier and last longer, it’s important to begin taking your allergy medications at least two weeks before your symptoms normally start. And don’t stop your medications until pollen counts have been down for about two weeks – usually after the first frost. Beautiful leaves + mold = misery – Those fall leaves may be gorgeous, but once they’ve fallen they begin to gather mold. And mold is an allergen that thrives in fall. In addition to leaves, mold can be found anywhere there is water – including in your backyard, in a field of uncut grass and in clogged gutters. If you are allergic to mold, the key to reducing it is moisture control. Be sure to clean standing water anywhere you find it. You can also help ward off mold by cleaning gutters regularly and keeping home humidity below 60 percent. Back to school, back to allergies? – If your child suddenly seems to have a constant runny nose, itchy eyes, a cough and sneezing, they could be dealing with allergens in their classroom. Kids can

Dodging pollen means dodging symptoms – Whether it’s ragweed, which is fall’s most prominent pollen, or another type, keeping pollen out of your life means fewer allergy symptoms. Some simple “housekeeping” tips can help. When you come in from outside, make sure pollen doesn’t come with you. Leave your shoes at the door and throw clothes in the washing machine. Shower and wash hair in the evening before bed so you’re not sleeping with pollen and getting it on your pillow and in your nose. Keep windows closed and run the A/C in both your home and your car. Monitor pollen and mold counts online so you can determine when it’s best to stay inside.
be allergic to dust in the classroom, or there might be pollen coming in through open windows. And don’t forget about mold – often found in bathrooms and locker rooms – as well as dander from pets that other kids may bring in on clothing and backpacks. If your child seems to have symptoms that came on around the time school started, make an appointment with an allergist. An allergist can set your child on the right track, for the long term, to handle their allergies or asthma.

OK, so if you live in Florida or Southern California, you may not need to read this column. But if you live in a cold-weather state, or perhaps if you are planning to visit loved ones in a colder clime over the winter holidays, the following tips literally could be life-saving! And even if you’ve been living in Alaska for many years now, these tips can serve as handy reminders of simple steps you can take to stay safe and keep your vehicle in good working order this winter. 1. Get the right kind of oil change. Are you approaching the time for a 30,000-mile full service for your vehicle? If so, don’t procrastinate! Among other things, the service should include an oil change, and the oil used should have the right viscosity, or thickness, for your vehicle at this time of year. Oil tends to thicken as it gets colder, and if it’s too thick it won’t do the best job of keeping your engine lubricated. Check your owner’s manual for guidance about which oil to use in different climates and temperatures. 2. Make sure you can see. When’s the last time you replaced your windshield wiper blades? They usually work effectively for about one year, so be sure to invest in some new ones if you’re due. Here’s another important step to take before you find yourself struggling to see in a blinding storm: Fill up your windshield washer reservoir with windshield washer fluid. (Plain water won’t do the trick at this time of year because it freezes.) Also check to see that your heater and defroster are working properly so you can keep the windshield nice and clear. 3. Give your battery a little TLC. This is an ideal time of year to make sure your battery’s posts and

connections are corrosion-free and that your battery has all the water it needs. If your battery is more than three years old, have a certified repair shop test its ability to hold a charge. Granted, you might be able to find a Good Samaritan to help you jumpstart your vehicle in the middle of a blizzard — but wouldn’t you rather avoid such a scenario altogether? 4. Examine your belts and hoses. When you have that full service done on your vehicle, make sure the belts and hoses get checked for wear and tear — even if you’re driving a modern car. Cold weather can do a number on belts and hoses, so they deserve attention. 5. Check your tire pressure. Your tires must be properly inflated to ensure you’ll have the best possible traction as you drive along — and traction is often severely jeopardized in wet, snowy or icy conditions. The air pressure in your tires has likely dropped as the weather has gotten colder, so it’s important to see where things stand now. (You can generally expect that you’ll lose 1 pound per square inch whenever the temperature drops by 10 degrees Fahrenheit.) Again, your trusty owner’s manual will tell you what your target tire pressure should be. 6. Think about switching to snow tires. Do you live in a hilly place that gets its fair share of snow? Then you might want to improve traction even more
by investing in winter tires and using them over the next few months instead of your usual all-season tires. When shopping around for snow tires, ask about all the fees that might come into play, such as fees for mounting and balancing. You can accomplish this easily and make accurate cost comparisons by asking each store for the “out the door charge.” 7. Do you have four-wheel drive? If so, it’s important to check the status of your four-wheeldrive system and be sure it’s working correctly — especially because most drivers don’t use their 4WD systems in the pleasant summer months. Be sure that the system engages and disengages easily, Continued on page 16

and that all drivers in your household know how and when to activate the system. 8. Get the antifreeze mixture just right. Aim for having a 50-50 mix of antifreeze (coolant) and water inside your radiator. This will prevent the mixture from freezing even at ridiculously cold temperatures. It’s easy to check the status of the mixture with an inexpensive antifreeze tester, which you can pick up at any auto parts store. If the mixture is off, your cooling system should be drained and refilled or flushed. Be sure you’re equipped to dispose of your old antifreeze properly if you do this job yourself.

It can’t just be poured down the drain. 9. Prepare an emergency kit. Light two flares and situate them at each end of your vehicle to call attention to your plight. Put on the extra clothes and use the blanket to stay warm. A cemetery walk presented by the Slatington History Preservation Committee featuring histories on slate barons from Slatington’s yesteryear was held on Saturday September 15, in Fairview Cemetery, Slatington. Nearly 50 people attended the hour plus long presentation that delved into seven slate barons, their family histories and business ventures and whose influence reached into the Slatington community and beyond. Featured slate barons included, Robert McDowell and Daniel Jones, two of the original founders of Slatington, the Morgan & Caskie families who in addition to their slate businesses were very active in the Presbyterian Church, local politics and the Slatington School System, David Roper, a prominent lawyer, and one of the founders of the Slatington Water Works, David and Owen Williams, brothers who owned quarries, and a large slate factory, and James Foote, the operator of the Slatington-Bangor Slate Syndicate. The committee is pleased to announce that a video of the presentation is now available on YouTube, for those who were unable to attend the program. The video is also available for viewing at the Slatington Library, or on their website Slatingtonlibrary.org The

The carpenter The carpentry skill is highly honored By the honest pious man; He knows exactly how and what to do, There is in his head a plan. When he builds our houses then, And everything is ready, Then on his knowledge of the (carpentry) skill Rests our security. With scriber, square and line He lays everything out here,

And then with saw and sharp chisel He creates the pieces. He turns the auger around with zeal Drives the peg then in the hole; He saws and hammers and hammers and saws The whole live long week. It is his thought that everything matters, Yet it doesn’t always hold out; When there is a short or long piece He throws it out right away. A good carpenter highly rejoices To work thus with wood, And [when] his work is done, then He is proud of his labor. We are all carpenters, in a way There is little difference; There is a plan also laid out for us, You may say what you want. The implements are a little different – Instead of wood, the lifetime With which we work – and the building, It is for eternity. We must saw just like him (carpenter),

The foundation must be strong, The main support beam square on it; All the while we are building further The square must often be used. The knots and the rotten lumber, They dare not go in to the building; Too much green and perhaps bend wood Weakens the building, for sure. Continued on page 38

Touch of Dutch
The knots are the small sins, Which may be our responsibility; Rotten wood – the [bad] habits Which grow every day.

The foundation is solid if It is only God’s word; We must build on it every day Continuously through the years.
Green wood – the selfishness in us all, Which shrinks with age; Bend wood is cheating perhaps, And often lying for money.
The main support beam – all the teachers In church and at home, Who we had in the days of our youth, In that pleasant time.

When one lives fairly and also honestly, Then it cannot be otherwise; That building stands for eternity, And we are true carpenters. [Ralph Funk used some German in this poem and where I could, I swapped in Dutch if it did not alter the metrics. For example, uff sei Wissenschaft der Kunscht (on his knowledge [of] the [carpentry] skill) uses a grammatical form Dutch does not have and the equivalent in Dutch would probably alter the meter, so it remains. Given the theme of this poem, we can also surmise that he listened carefully to his pastor’s homily one Sunday!] YOUR CHOICE SALE $14.99

Lehigh Township Historical Society News Submitted by Ruth Hall Kent
Fall is upon us and time for the Historical Society to thank everyone who supported our fundraisers throughout this year. Our annual fall mum sale was held on Saturday and Sunday, September 15th and 16th, and it was a huge success. Perhaps it was due to dry weather that weekend, but our mums were almost sold out by the end of Saturday’s sale! Next year plan on mid-September for our mum sale. One more event that the Historical Society will be participating in is the 31st Annual Lehigh Township Benefit Festival & Car Show. Come visit our booth on the porch of the refreshment stand. We will have various items and books on display as well as copies of the Beck Family’s book “Travel Along with Becky’s Camera” which is a collection of photographs taken by William Beck. Information regarding how to obtain a copy of that book will be available at our booth. Stop by and visit! Remember, you can visit the Historical Centre Museum any Tuesday morning from 9 am to Noon. Please give us a call at 610-440-0151 to make sure we are open. We hope to see you soon! We recently received the following news, from one of our members, about the old Pennsville

Cemetery along Walnut Drive being revitalized as a Boy Scout Eagle Project. It was a much appreciated and thoughtful act. Here is a wonderful account of the activity: Recent Beautification of a Treasure Lehigh Township has a rich history, with a lot of unique little areas tucked into that history. One such tucked-away treasure is the small Pennsville Cemetery, located at 540 Walnut Drive. Its deep Old German origins are evidenced in a dedication stone in the fence line where the accompanying church once stood. Hardly visible and significantly aged since the 1800’s, the Old German script was best translated to “Peace Church of the Redeemed Brothers in Christ” by a professor specializing in Old German. This historic cemetery remained undisturbed as Lehigh Township built the one-room Pennsville schoolhouse directly beside it around 1840. The schoolhouse still remains as a private residence. Today, the quaint cemetery sits back off the road and one might not even notice it as you drive by on Walnut Drive, ‘down the road a piece’ from the Pennsville Hotel. Someone stopping to walk back to the old tombstones would find names such as Kleppinger, Easterday, Oplinger, etc. Two large old sweeping sugar maples stand in the middle of the cemetery, shading this quiet resting place. Eastern red cedars dot the corners. The cemetery has not gone unnoticed however. This past summer, Luke Cantrel of 830 South Oaks Road, Moore Township, thought it would be a good idea and worthwhile project to protect and beautify the old cemetery from encroachment. Luke sought out the Pennsville Cemetery Association and caretaker, Alton Ziegenfuss of Wood Drive, Walnutport, to ask if he could work on this for his Eagle Scout project. Luke is a member of Troop 50, based in Moorestown. Plans were soon developed for constructing a wooden split rail fence in the front and at the rear border of the cemetery. Plans

were made to clear debris, remove an overgrown brick garden and create a new flowerbed. Also included in the plan was to dig out overgrown bushes, cut down dead trees and plant a new yellow Elizabeth Magnolia tree. The Pennsville Cemetery Association members, Judy Dieter and Alton Ziegenfuss, approved Luke’s plan. Many people from the community offered to help. The TeenWorks program, sponsored by Lehigh Valley Labor Unions, was a huge help and provided significant funding for the project. Bruce Miller Jr. of BetterScapes Landscaping, Danielsville, came in one afternoon and took down the dead trees for free. Point Phillips Perennials helped with perennial choices and
Moyer Lumber of Bethlehem provided a good discount on the lumber. Fellow scouts from Troop 50, former Scout Master Jim Chuss, and family friends all pitched in. Even Alton, at age 86, came out to check on the project and picked up sticks while the group worked. You might think that area residents, with their busy lives, wouldn’t care about the old cemetery, but Luke found that wasn’t true. As the boys worked on the fence near the road, many people stopped as they drove by. Some commented on how nice it looked but most just wanted to express their appreciation. We want to thank Luke for all his hard work and effort, and also the community for caring about this little gem tucked away in Lehigh Township.
