INSIDE THIS ISSUE
FROM THE PUBLISHER’S DESK It’s my favorite time of the year, warm days and cool nights. I hope you are all enjoying the weather as well with all the pumpkin patches, haunted houses and the changing of the leaves. There are always so many events going on in the fall, one of my favorites being the Walnutport Canal Festival. I love to walk around and see everyone that I haven’t seen since the year before, and the food is not bad either. If you’ve never been there, this is one event you should not miss. I can hardly believe when I go into stores that the Christmas decorations are on the shelves already, it’s not even Halloween. The winter weather forcast has been all over Facebook, and they are saying it won’t be warm like last winter, but I think we will just have to wait and see what Old Man Winter has in store for us. I hope you all enjoy the fall issue and check out all the festivities that are going on in our area. -Kathy Marsh

October Is National Orthodontic Health Month And National Dental Hygiene Month Submitted by BETH ARCURY
You may think of October as being the month for ghosts, goblins, and tons of candy for Halloween, but if you are an orthodontist, a dentist, or dental hygienist like Mrs. Beth Arcury of the Northampton Area School District, you are thinking, beautiful smiles, straight teeth and healthy gums! After all, did you know that poorly aligned teeth could affect your overall health? When left untreated, crooked teeth and misaligned bites can lead to periodontal

disease and premature wear on your tooth enamel, along with social stigmas such as lower self- esteem and lack of self-confidence. In many cases, children as well as adults have even been the targets of bullies because of their teeth. Bullying and oral health have become a universal problem. In recent studies by the American Association of Orthodontists, teeth were the number one physical feature that can lead to a child’s chance of being bullied; whether it was protruding teeth, missing teeth, spaces between teeth or the shape and color of teeth. Not all children have perfect, straight teeth and bullies can certainly damage the self -esteem of those children by ridiculing their appearance. A great smile helps you feel better and be more confident. It can really change how people see you and how you see yourself. Everyone wants a great smile and your orthodontist is a specialist in making your smile the best it can be. The AAO recommends that children have an evaluation by an orthodontist by age seven to determine if an orthodontic treatment is needed. Not all children with poor dental or facial appearance are candidates for that

My favorite season has finally arrived, and with it comes all things pumpkin and apple! This recipe was perfect to kick off autumn and welcome the chilly weather. I didn’t use Granny Smith apples; I used a type of red apple from Emerald Cider Mill, and only had four. I also added a little bit of onion powder too. While the flavor came out nice and it smelled good, it was still missing something and I was wishing I could punch up the flavor a little bit more. I’m not really a fan of pork chops at all, so I was actually looking forward to eating this meal and it was a nice change from drab, plain pork chops. Give this recipe a try. If you find something missing too and have any suggestions, I’d love to hear them! Email me at cstroh@idpcreative.com.

Man Walks Into Chick-Fil-A: Is Completely Blown Away When He Saw This for Vets By BILL CALLEN: TOP RIGHT NEWS
Chick-fil-A, the same fast-food outlet has once again proved a positive to the world. The Bible represents the strength gained through faith to sustain those lost from our country, founded as one nation under God. The glass is inverted — to symbolize their inability to share this evening's toast. The chair is empty — they are missing." After the story went viral, the store manager, Alex Korchan, explained to WSB that his team members had set up the table because they "wanted to honor veterans." Furthermore, he offered free meals to all veterans and their family members on Veterans Day. Korchan also put up a poster so that customers could write in the names of loved ones who they have lost. "We've had a lot of people who have come in and seen it and been touched by it," Korchan continued. "It's been special to see."

The Old Jail’s spirits are real!! Hear about voices coming from empty cells, unseen hands felt on shoulders, and dark and sinister shadows moving from cell to cell. On June 21, 1877, four Irish coal miners accused of murder and known as Molly Maguires, met their untimely death on the gallows inside The Old Jail.

Popcorn Fundraiser for Scouts submitted by ALISTA BLOSE
Area Scouts are participating in a Popcorn Fundraiser, and will be heading to your neighborhood, in hopes of help achieving their scouting goals. Not only is the popcorn a delicious treat, the fundraiser helps pave the way for youth to reach goals they set for themselves throughout the coming year. Some scouts choose to pay for special activities, others choose a new uniform or equipment. Scouts can also use the funds to attend once in a lifetime events like a National Jamboree, or a trip to an adventure camp across the country.

(610) 760-8888 PennDOT, Police Highlight New Child Passenger Safety Law, Urge Motorists to Participate in Seat Checks submitted by TRACY FOX
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and Pennsylvania State Police are encouraging motorists to properly restrain children and educate themselves on the updated child passenger safety law as the agencies marked National Child Passenger Safety Week on September 18 through September 24. Additionally, Saturday, September 24 was designated as“National Seat Check Saturday.” “PennDOT urges parents and guardians to remain informed as child safety laws and seats evolve,” PennDOT Secretary Leslie S. Richards said. “We encourage the public to take advantage of our seat checks and educational materials throughout the year to ensure that each child gets to their destination safely.” PennDOT funds resources such as training and educational materials for 171 fitting stations across Pennsylvania, and the Pennsylvania State Police check more than 2,500 seats annually. The checkups are designed to teach drivers the proper installation and use of child safety seats. "A properly installed child safety seat can be the difference in keeping your child safe in the event 28
of a crash,” said Major Edward C. Hoke, Director, Bureau of Patrol. “We urge parents and caregivers to take advantage of the free safety seat check events being held around the state during the week." Motorists are reminded that Pennsylvania’s primary seat-belt law requires drivers and passengers under 18 years old to buckle up, and children under the age of 4 must be properly restrained in an approved child safety seat. Children ages 4 to 8 must be restrained in an appropriate booster seat. A new Pennsylvania law that went into effect August 2016 requires a child under 2 years of age be securely fastened in a rear-facing child passenger restraint system, which is to be used until the child outgrows the maximum weight and limits designated by the manufacturer. In addition, children ages 8 to 18 must be wearing a seat belt when riding anywhere in the vehicle. Also, drivers and front-seat passengers 18 years-old or older are required to buckle up. If motorists are stopped for a traffic violation and are not wearing Continued on page 32 News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || OCTOBER 6, 2016

New Children’s Attraction Encourages Play with a Purpose. Imagi Nation A Little World for Big Thinkers submitted by THE ICE CREAM LAB
Wendy Beltzner-Pitts knows all too well the challenges that face area employers. As a community-college workforce trainer, she’s been delivering leadership and interpersonal skills training to area companies for 20 years. So when she saw children who visited her family’s ice cream shop struggle with the same issues, she decided to
do something about it. The Ice Cream Lab Inc., owned by Wendy and husband Tim, has become well known not only for ice cream, but also for educational field trips strategically focused on collaboration and problem solving. Now, the small Walnutport business, which has hosted over 20,000 children, is expanding their educational solution

into a larger concept called Imagi Nation; an entire city built for and run by kids that will be located in the Dorneyville Shopping Center, opening daily in early October. According to Beltzner-Pitts,“Children today are immersed in technology, which is a requirement for them to be competitive. However, what parents, educators and employers all agree on, is that there is a decline in social skills as a result. Our field trips have addressed that need with curriculum that encourages children to use their ingenuity and most importantly, work with and lead others. This purposeful blend of education, entertainment and social-skills awareness, hits the mark with adults and children alike, many of whom return year after year. Imagi Nation will allow us to expand our programming beyond ice cream to an integrated city and accommodate even larger groups.” The new interactive experience, designed for ages 3 through 12, provides over 40 different role-play opportunities within a bank, market, post office, manufacturing center, health/ dental clinic, creation station, media center, fire/police station, and ice cream flavor lab. Activities are facilitated by a dedicated team of educators called Imagi Nation Ambassadors, and children are introduced to financial literacy by being paid with Biznis Bucks for the work they perform. Within Imagi Nation, they can pay for entertainment opportunities, or
choose to save or donate their Biznis Bucks to a charity of their choice. The 5,120 sq. ft. indoor metropolis is comprised of enterprises that will eventually be branded with sponsorships from leading Lehigh Valley organizations, providing an even more authentic experience for visitors. Imagi Nation is the Lehigh Valley’s first educational entertainment experience for children with an emphasis on social skill development. Imagi Nation specializes in imaginative play, school field trips, birthday parties, private events, special family events and corporate team building sessions. Northampton Regional Emergency Medical Services receives Mission: Lifeline EMS Recognition Award submitted by ERIC WESCOE
Northampton Regional EMS has received the American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline® EMS Gold Award for implementing quality improvement measures for the treatment of patients who experience severe heart attacks. Every year, more than 250,000 people experience an ST elevation myocardial infarction the most deadly type of heart attack, caused by a blockage of blood flow to the heart that requires timely treatment. To prevent death, it’s critical to restore blood flow as quickly as possible, either by mechanically opening the blocked vessel or by providing clot-busting medication. Unfortunately, a significant number of STEMI patients don't receive this prompt reperfusion therapy, which is critical in restoring blood flow. Mission: Lifeline® seeks to save lives by closing the gaps that separate these patients from timely access to appropriate treatments. Mission: Lifeline®’s EMS recognition program recognizes emergency

EMS agencies perform 12-lead ECGs which measure the electrical activity of the heart and can help determine if a heart attack has occurred. They also follow protocols derived from American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology guidelines. These correct tools, training, and practices allow EMS providers to rapidly identify suspected heart attack patients, promptly notify the medical center, and trigger an early response from the awaiting hospital personnel. Agencies that receive the Mission: Lifeline® Gold award have demonstrated at least 75 percent compliance for each required achievement measure for two years. “EMTs and paramedics play a vital part in the system of care for those who have heart attacks,”

Der Ralph selwert hot aa schunnt viel Gedichde gschriwwe. -Florence Baver November 7, 1963 Every person who has a drop of PA Dutch blood in him, should be concerned about his Pennsylvania Dutch inheritance which he received from his parents and great-grandparents. Everybody should look deeper into the things which made him a Dutch person, not how much money that he inherited, but what the reason is for the life that he now has and why he can be proud of it. One way to do this is to become a member of organizations that looks deeply into these things. The PA German Society met just recently at Muhlenberg College in Allentown. There was again much to learn there. Friday evening Roy Kulp from Chalfont showed colored pictures of old houses, barns, people and their works that are dying out and other old customs, which helped make our Dutch region what it is. The Seltzer sisters from Kutztown sang old selections in our Dialect, just as they were always sung years back. Saturday, the meeting started with oral selections ‘sung’ in our mother tongue by Ralph Funk from Allentown, a poet from Lehigh County. Did you know that there were no less than 40 such people

that he knew about? There are, however, just four living right now. Should we not do something here about it? Is this something that is dying out? Do we want to let this continue to die out, or how can we get people to take an hour every now and then for the purpose of sitting down and writing a little down how they think and feel, just like the old poets have done. Or do we let the TV completely control us, that we can indeed no longer think when we want to? This is so easy to see in the schools with the children nowadays. They can indeed no longer think [even] if we use a stick on them. They have not learned to think. Everything is too handily provided in life. No one needs to think anymore, everything is made by machine. [What would she say today about children with smart phones, computers and video games?] We certainly wish every person could hear Ralph Funk read John Birmelin’s poem about mother’s apron. This is the best poem that we ever heard. On November 17 Ralph Funk will be on our “Fereinich Fulk Radio Program” as a guest. We hope that he will again read that beautiful poem about the apron. Ralph, himself, also has already written many poems. [So what is the probability that a Baver article would mention the poem, “En Schatz,” included in the last issue of the Town and Country Gazette and also the creator of the Der Schtadt-Bauer, Ralph Funk, which was featured in the two prior issues? I could not pass up this selection from Florence, particularly since it also included other interesting information. When Baver mentions the inheritance of our heritage and its values from our elders, most likely she was thinking of that famous quote from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749 – 1832), that renowned German poet, who wrote among others, that epic poem,“Faust, ‘ where in act I, scene i, we find: “Was du ererbt von deinen Vaetern hast, / Erwirb es, um es zu besitzen.” (Our Dutch: Was du vun deine

Vadder [Vaeder] ge-erebt hoscht,/ Verdien es, fer es besitze! English [Randall Jarrell]: “That which you inherit from your fathers / You must earn in order to possess.”) Roy C. Kulp (1926 - 2015), late of Hatfield, PA, formerly of Chalfont, PA. Roy was a former member of the Bucks County Historic Tourist Commission in Doylestown. He was former member of Zion Mennonite Church and currently attended Souderton Mennonite Church. Roy was an avid reader who loved collecting books and was a freelance writer and historian that knew local and American history. - Extracts from an obituary posted on a Souderton, PA funeral home’s website in March 2015. The reference to oral selections ‘sung’ by Ralph Funk may refer to verses which had a simple songlike rhythm, and were delivered in a singsong manner, almost like chanting. The traditional New Year’s wishes would have been in that category. The 40 people he had known probably were those who could present simple rhyming selections in that singsong manner, not for the poets whom we feature in this column. Perhaps some readers may be able to shed more light on that old tradition.]

LAWYERS TOMBSTONE A lawyer named Strange died, and his friend asked the tombstone maker to inscribe on his tombstone, “Here lies Strange, an honest man, and a lawyer.” The inscriber insisted that such an inscription would be confusing, for passersby would tend to think that three men were buried under the stone. However he suggested an alternative: He would inscribe,“Here lies a man who was both honest and a lawyer. “That way, whenever anyone walked by the tombstone and read it, they would be certain to remark: “That’s Strange!”
