From The Editor’s Desk.
Joe Korba
I can’t express how grateful I am for the turnout at the Blue Mountain Blowout Rummage sale. I’m a natural cynic, but witnessing all the support for the Northern Lehigh Food Bank helped restore my faith in humanity. It was a huge success, and will definitely happen again next year. Thanks to everyone who came out. This is our “Celebration of the Arts” issue, and getting the opportunity to speak to local artists was awesome. Our area might not be a bustling metropolis, but we have plenty of talented artists of all different stripes and a great arts culture. I hope you enjoy the articles on featured local artists in our “Art from the Heart” series, I know we liked writing them. As always, I hope you enjoy this issue. ON THE COVER - The oil painting of the Carbon County Courthouse in Jim Thorpe was done by local artist Margie Long. She can be contacted at 610-379-0039.

Backpack Buddies Provides Weekend Meals Kornfeinds Market Joins the Cause By Alice Wanamaker The statistics of people in our country who are Second Harvest of the Lehigh Valley leads the affected by hunger are staggering. One in five program locally and provides backpack meals children are suffering from hunger. For many on for nearly 300 students in our area. One of their nutrition supplement programs at public schools, volunteers, Andy Perdick, brought the mission that can mean that weekends are long and many of providing nutrition for kids to the local meat kids are left waiting to go back to school on Monday to have a healthy hot meal. Second Harvest of the Lehigh Valley is leading a program in our area to help kids on supplemental nutrition programs so they never have to face hungry weekends again. The program is called Backpack Buddies and hopes to combat the lasting effects that malnutrition can have on kids. Backpack Buddies provides kids with food for weekends and holidays when many kids are not receiving proper nutrition. Kids are given a grocery bag full of foods including pastas, soups and breads among other items, mainly kid friendly nutritional items to take home for the weekend. The food is enough to last from Friday night to Monday morning or longer for holidays. Children are put on the backpack buddies program after being identified Joe Kornfeind and staff kick off the BACKPACK by staff. Buddies food-raiser at their Egypt market. The foodraiser and specials run through the end of September.

Backpack Buddies market in Egypt, Kornfeinds Market, where he works. Owner Joe Kornfeind was more than happy to step up and participate in the program this year. As a participant Joe vows to provide 1 and 1/3 backpack for every one meat special he sells in the month of September. Andy and Joe have set their goal at 350 children. As of press time, they had some ways to go having reached 60 donated backpacks. The way their program works is simple; for every meat special they sell, Kornfeinds Market will donate 1 and 1/3 backpack to Second Harvest for the program. Shoppers looking for ways to help fight to end hunger are encouraged to purchase the specials which include over 16 lbs. of fresh meat for under $100. Specials can be found online at www.kornfeinds.com or on Kornfeinds facebook page, where you can also track the progress of the program.

Local Meals on Wheels Volunteer Wins National Award
Betty Duffy receving her American Volunteer award. Betty Duffy, 85, who volunteered for meals on wheels for 41 years, was presented with the 2012 American Volunteer Award sponsored by the Meals on Wheels Association of America. Twenty four Meals on Wheels programs across the country submitted their entry for the American Volunteer contest. This contest is named in honor of Jody Tepedino Nicolo, a Meals on Wheels volunteer who lost her life in the 9/11 tragedy. Betty, 85 years old, started volunteering for Meals on Wheels of Lehigh County on its second day of service, February 2, 1971. She has delivered every Monday since then on one of the Agency’s longest routes. Over 41 years she has dedicated 4,000 hours, driven 27,000 miles and delivered 30,000 meals. She exemplifies volunteerism because in addition to volunteering for Meals on Wheels of Lehigh County, she has been volunteering for Meals on Wheels of Northampton County for 16 years, volunteers at her church, at IronPigs games, and is a multi-gallon blood donor. Betty received the most votes in this Facebook contest. She will receive a set of tires, courtesy of Bridgestone/Firestone. Meals on Wheels of Lehigh County will receive $1,000 to provide meals for low-income clients. When presented with this award, Betty said: “I truly appreciate being able to serve seniors. I am also a senior and am blessed to be in good health. As long as I am healthy, I will continue delivering meals to other seniors.” Executive Director, Pamela S. Bechtel, said that: “If anyone deserves this award, it is Betty Duffy. We are so proud of her.” Each weekday, Meals on Wheels of Lehigh County a nonprofit agency, serves 350 homebound seniors and adults with disabilities
living throughout Lehigh County. 955 individual and group volunteers deliver over 135,000 meals each year; six million since 1971. Volunteers also provide a social connection and a wellbeing check. For more information, visit www. mealsonwheelslc.org

Lynda Randle, Gospel and Hope
Award winning gospel performer Lynda Randle spent time in New Tripoli last month. She performed at Ebenezer UCC Church to a very appreciative crowd. Her music and powerful voice along with the word of God brought many to the feet in jubilation and praise. Her performance was part of a fundraiser put together by members of Ebenezer and Lowhill Churches. The proceeds went toward the Love for Lance foundation as well as the Lowhill Food Pantry of Northwestern Lehigh County. Lance and his family are currently having a tough time financially as the 13 year old continues treatment and rehabilitation for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

Courses that Care Miles that Matter
On August 9, Blue Ridge Country Club hosted the Seventh Flight of the Krysta Cares Flight Club. The KC Flight Club is a service branch of the Krysta Hankee Memorial Fund created in memory of Krysta Hankee of Germansville who passed away in 2007 at the age of 22. Krysta Hankee Memorial Fund, Giant Foods, Starters Restaurants, Utz Snacks, Texas Roadhouse and several area golf courses have come together to provide golfing events to raise money to purchase Giant gas cards that are donated to the Good Shepherd Pediatric Rehab Program for families needing help with the cost of transporting their children to Good Shepherd for ongoing medical care. With seven outings in the record book this year the Flight Club has donated over 45,000 miles of driving to these grateful families. Three events still remain this year with a goal of 100,000 miles. Several private donations have also been received from non-golfers. All levels of golfers are welcome at the events. Blue Ridge Country Club was a beautiful setting for the fifty golfers who enjoyed a great day and raised over $1,000 for the kids at Good Shepherd. The Hankee Family, the golf committee

30th Anniv. Celebrated
The Walnut street playground association and friends celebrated the 30th anniversary of the playground association on September 8 at the Vigilant fire co. The event, held indoors due to rain and thunderstorms, brought the neighborhood together and provided a safe environment for kids and parents to have fun with their neighbors. Groups played games like hula-hoop and musical chairs, enjoyed face painting and karaoke and spent the evening dancing and snacking on tasty treats. The playground association organizes many events throughout the year including a giant flea market and the annual Easter egg hunt.

Touring Germany: The Rhine River and Bad Windsheim By Chrissy Zopf On June 27th Sina's family called me into their dining room before Sina and I left for the night. On the table sat a wrapped gift with a letter on top addressed to me. Tears welled in my eyes as I realized her family had gotten me a going away present. As I read their note to me, I held back my tears, I didn't want to leave. The next morning a feeling of dread settled in my stomach. When Sina's family and I arrived in Gladenbach, families were already waiting for the bus that would take us away. Hugs and goodbyes were exchanged, and I began to openly cry. I wasn't the only one; Germans and Americans were both letting the tears fall freely. Once the bus arrived, we stowed our things away on the lower deck, only bringing a small bag for the first few nights. I lingered outside the bus, saying last minute goodbyes, as the teachers commanded us to board the bus. From my seat I could see all of the German students and their families wave their goodbyes to us. It would be the last time we saw them. On the bus, Chloe and I sat closely, but in silence. Neither one of us was prepared to leave
and we were both feeling a great sense of loss. But the farther away we drove, the more surreal it all seemed. I convinced myself we were just going on an overnight trip, and that we would return to Gladenbach the following day. Deep down I knew this was not the case, but at that point in time, denial seemed like the best solution to numb the sense of loss I was feeling about the departure. All this went through my mind as I sat staring out the window, watching the German countryside fly by. It was a beautiful day, and our first destination would be the Rhine River. We would take a two hour cruise that showed off many castles and other landmarks of the Rhine Land. Despite all efforts to make it to the boarding sight on time, we still arrived late and missed the ship. Luckily, another ship would arrive in twenty minutes, which gave us time to enjoy the sun. The last two weeks had been cold, and the warmth was a wonderful, and a much needed change. When the ship arrived, we boarded and immediately headed to the top deck. I had never been on a cruise ship and was slightly worried about sea-sickness, but as with my first plane ride, my excitement overwhelmed my worry. As with any large group of teenagers, we broke into smaller groups of close friends and chose one of the many tables that lined the top deck. Throughout Continued on Page 25

Learning About Hispanic Heritage Hijuelos I love flying over our beautiful country and seeing all kinds of families doing things together. For the next four weeks we have a special month to celebrate people of Hispanic heritage and to learn about how they have shaped the history of the United States. They have come here from countries such as Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba and other parts of Central and South America. They may speak slightly different versions of the Spanish language, and possess a range of identities and cultures, but they have one thing in common – they are part of the American story! Can you read the clues to identify these Hispanic Americans?

An artist asked the gallery owner if there had been any interest in his paintings on display at that time. “I have good news and bad news,” the owner replied. “The good news is that a gentleman enquired about your work and wondered if it would appreciate in value after your death. When I told him it would, he bought all 15 of your paintings.” “That’s wonderful,” the artist exclaimed. “What’s the bad news?” “The guy was your doctor...”

Touring Germany Continued from Page 25 the cruise, my friends and I made jokes and took pictures, sometimes with each other, sometimes of the landscape surrounding the river. Although leaving Gladenbach had brought my spirits down, it was hard to feel sad when the weather was so beautiful and the company so wonderful. The two hours on the ship went by quickly and we soon arrived in Assmansshausen and proceeded to a Seilbahn station. A Seilbahn is similar to a ski lift and is used to for the same purpose: to take people up a mountain. Once at the top of the mountain, our group hiked towards Rüdesheim, where we would take another Seilbahn down the mountain and meet our bus. In a few hours we would be at our final stop for the day. Bad Windsheim is nothing special, if you were to ask me. Also if you asked me I would tell you it was probably just a place to spend the night and had no significance in our overall trip, other than being my first encounter with a youth hostel. The hostel was quaint, but divided our group among two rooms, with all the boys in one and all the girls in another. I expected drama, putting more than four girls in a room together is never a good idea, but we would have to tough it out for the night. After settling in, everyone began to get ready for the semi-final soccer game that evening. Myself and two other girls chose to stay in, it wasn't the same without the Germans. Also, we were tired and didn't feel up to staying out late. Instead we chose to search for a cafe, but we quickly learned that everything closes early in Germany, even eateries. My friends and I walked back to the hostel, slightly confused about which direction to take, and ate bread, the only food we could find. Slowly the rest of our group came back to the hostel. It had started to rain and the public viewing of the soccer match was called off. Most of us took up residence in a lounge room to watch

the game, and we were often shushed by a couple of avid German soccer fans for excessive talking and laughing. Before the game was over, I headed upstairs to go to sleep. The game was lost, and I didn't see a point in sticking around for the ending. That night I went to sleep thinking about what the rest of my trip would bring. Although my time in Germany was rapidly coming to a close, I still had four days left until I would be boarding the plane home. I fell asleep thinking of what adventures tomorrow would bring.

lot of talented, ambitious and caring residents in the Northern Lehigh area. Think about using some of your time and talent with us, as we strive to improve the Northern Lehigh area. We understand not everyone is a “meeting” type of person, and there are other ways you help NLFF, without attending meetings all the time. Perhaps you like doing research in the library, or making phone calls, or writing. We are looking for people who have any or all of these skills. Community groups & organizations in the area are also encouraged to send a representative to our meetings and share input and become involved in community projects. The following are examples of some of the recent projects future focus has been involved in: presenting welcome baskets to new Main Street businesses in Slatington and Walnutport, writing text for, funding and erecting historical markers, publishing brochures on historical markers and the trail system, main street banners for the communities in the Northern Lehigh area, helping develop the Slatington Memorial Park, securing funding and purchasing of amenities to the Slatington Trailhead, and helping develop and fund the Slatington Memorial Park and amenities in the park. These are just some of the many and varied projects future focus has work on individually or partnered with other community organizations over the past few years. Other community projects are planned, and work remains to be done on others such as The Slatington Memorial Park and Slatington Trailhead. However, we need the help of people in the community to get these projects complete, and tackle other worthwhile projects. Consider joining us, you will have fun, and gain the satisfaction of knowing that you are helping give back to the communities in which you live. If you are interested in learning more about NLFF or wish to attend a meeting, call Dan at (610) 760-0685. client exactly what they want. She can paint on just about any surface, from canvas to wood. With the technology available today, once the art is completed, it is available on numerous items. Despite having physical disabilities, such as rotator cuff tears and carpal tunnel in both hands, her painting has slowed down a bit, but it has not stopped her. Once paint is in an artist's veins, it cannot be washed out. She continues to create beautiful artwork such as The Legacy continues...honoring Zenyatta, Bernardini and their colt. She has also completed the same type piece honoring Rachel Alexandra, Curlin and their colt, Jess's Dream. Race horses are not her only Equine subject matter, she has finished work involving Police, Draft, and numerous other breeds. A 'Horse is a Horse, of course'! www.patdelong-art.com

It is the horse's name that is important as that is what determines the background. Pat has won several awards, and she has an abundant following on facebook where she enjoys the interactions with her 'fans'. Her art is showcased in many racehorse owner's and trainer's homes and several book publications. Brianne Carney
Lindsey Smeltzer
is a full time student with the Art Institute of Pittsburgh Online Division working towards her Associates of Science in Photography. She grew up in the area recently moving back after having spent some time in Kentucky. Brianne said, “The arts have always been a passion of mine. I love being able to capture life's little details and beauty. It creates a memory that can be held onto forever.” Brianne enjoys photographing food, commercial, and nature and is never caught without her camera. Upon graduation, she hopes to land a career as a food and stock photographer

By: Chrissy Zopf For Lindsey Smeltzer, a 17 year old Northampton High School student, art has always been a passion. Lindsey’s interest in art sparked around age five and continued throughout elementary school, where art was always her favorite class. Now, a senior in high school, Lindsey’s art
has come a long way since crayons and basic art projects. Her favorite mediums are watercolor and pencil. She also enjoys using charcoals, but admits that she needs improvement in that area. When asked about her style of art, Lindsey began with saying that a person’s personality is what influences their artwork, and that her shy, quiet personality lends to her soft, low contrast artwork. As a high school student, Lindsey faces challenges older artists may not experience. Although her artwork can be seen hanging in Taylor Roast Coffee House, she will find herself doubting her abilities, or she may find herself

being compared to others. She also must find the will to pull herself away from her art to make time for school work, or sometimes just the opposite. At times, she can become so caught up in her school work that it seems impossible to find time to focus on her artwork. Another problem faced by young artists is finding that every year more and more art programs are cut from high schools. When asked just how important are high school art programs, Lindsey responded with, “Vital.” She went on to explain that art classes are important for many reasons, the most important being that art is a stress reliever. She has also seen what art has
Page 33
done for her classmates. “I’ve seen kids walk in who have no interest in art and say ‘oh yeah I just took this to get the credit’ and they end up loving it.” She explains that art lets you use a different part of your brain, the creative part, and that with guidance you can create something great, as opposed to other high school subjects that are concrete and allow no room for creative thought. Although Lindsey does not intend to make a career of art, she plans to keep it as a lifelong hobby. She says that the biggest challenge in her future relating to art will not only be finding the time for art but, “Finding the drive to make it a point to not let it slip though my fingers.”

Caregivers of America formerly Quality Personal Care
Dear Valued Customers, Employees, and Friends, Quality Personal Care and CareGivers America are happy to announce the joining of these two companies on October 1, 2012. Quality Personal Care will soon take the CareGivers America name and become the 11th home care office in Pennsylvania. It is our sincerest wish that this transition be as seamless as possible for everyone involved. CareGivers America was started in 2002 in Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania by current owners, Paul and Lisa Bartoletti. The company is still family owned and operated, with Paul and Lisa’s brother, daughter, and niece operating in critical roles throughout the company. The company is primarily a non-medical home care provider, but also offers medical home health services, medical supplies, in-home hospice services, handyman services, and private duty nursing services. Quality Personal Care’s owner, Barbara Graver, will be joining CareGivers America working closely with consumers and employees to ensure quality of care in the delivery of home care services. Over the upcoming weeks, we will be reaching out to employees and consumers by phone to answer questions and provide information and options. Our goal is your satisfaction. We will make every effort to ensure this is a seamless and easy transition. Sincerely, Barbara Graver Quality Personal Care, Inc Owner

Spread the Good Word
First rights Love Never Fails By Rev. Rob Zweifel
The meaning of the word “love” is easily diminished when used in terms of emotion or a warm feeling. Truly, love is much more; it is a consistent attitude. The Bible says that if we have spiritual gifts, give alms, or even sacrifice, but have not love, we gain nothing. “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails” (I Corinthians 13:4-8a). God’s love is an example for us to follow in our own relationships. How does your love for others measure up? Does it constitute likeness to God? Because God is love, He bestowed His blessings

to mankind by sending His Son to be the Savior of the world. Indeed this is the great proof of His love for us. When we acknowledge that Jesus is the Son of God, His love is made complete in us, and of course, love never fails. Rob serves as Pastor of Worship Arts at The Gospel Chapel in Northampton.

Doing what they love, we hope you like it too! The medium I used for this painting was Acrylic, Which is my most favorite medium. I paint and draw many types of Art. I usually start with an idea and just go with it. This painting I had the idea of a sunset and a small stream with a tiny waterfall and everything seems to pour out on to the canvas with using basic paint brushes and a dream. A Lifelong Passion: Margie Long’s Art By Joe Korba
Fifty years is a long time. In the early 60’s a gallon of gas was around 30 cents and a stamp was 4 cents. There isn’t too much that lasts that long, things break, people move, and the world changes. The passage of time is inevitable and unstoppable. There is a woman, an artist, who lives in Carbon County and has kindled a love of art for half a century. Margie Long, originally of Newark, Delaware, who has lived in Lehighton since 1989 has had a passion for painting for over 50 years. “My husband Bob gave me my first brushes in 1959,” Mrs. Long says. After painting more than 300 oil paintings, Mrs. Long says that she is “addicted to painting and in love with art.” As soon as you enter her beautiful home, near Beltzville Lake, her enthusiasm for painting is evident. There are oil paintings ranging from landscapes to portraits, with everything in between, on the walls and in stacks. Landscapes are her favorite muse. “The land is ever changing, God’s creation,” Mrs. Long

says. There are few people who have the initiative to work so hard for something that might only appeal only to them. “Paint from the heart, everyone isn’t going to like what you do,” she says. Mrs. Long has advice for young artists, who have the same itch that has woken her up in the middle of the night to paint a portrait of a solider that was featured in a local paper. “Do not give up! Keep at it. You’ll get better the more you do. You will find your medium,” she says. Her determination and focus are an inspiration for those who find their calling in the arts, and indeed, everyone. Margie Long lives in Lehighton and can be contacted at 610-379-0030 for questions or for inquiries about commissioned paintings or

Maddie Benefit A bowling benefit for local girl Maddie S was held on on August 26th at Hampton Lanes in Northampton. “Bowling for Maddie” was a great success for the young girl. There were plenty of things to do and everyone had a good time. Besides bowling, the band ‘TYPE 14’ entertained the crowd. There were over 90 baskets that were raffled off to the lucky winners. The baskets were filled with great prizes and unique items. There was also a smorgasbord of everything sweet at the bake sale. Maddie has been diagnosed with Leukemia at 15 months old. The family is accepting donations at the First Niagara Bank in

Girls’ soccer has been in a competition this fall. Ever since the leagues moved the girls’ season from the spring to the fall, teams have had to compete with field hockey for players. It is very evident by a team’s record and roster size which sport won out in the various schools. At Northwestern, the girls’ soccer team definitely was victorious. While the field hockey team is working hard to acquire their first win this season, the soccer team is exceling. The lady Tigers are 5-0 as of September 17. That tremendous start has put them at the top of the standings in not only the north division, but the entire Colonial League. Through one-third of their games, Northwestern averages five goals per match. That offensive firepower is a result of a multitude of attributes. This squad of 19 young ladies is very agile and quick on their feet. That speed translates to great ball handling up and down the field. Those amazing skills are especially

Extra Point Continued from Page 52 season, “We are young, but I definitely expected us to have the skills to put the game together and we definitely have some skilled players that are really fun to watch play. We are getting better and better as a team every time we are on the field.” Bleam mentioned having some talented players and she was not kidding. Sophomore forward Sarah Segan, senior forward Anna Fricchione and junior defender Grace Baker all have great footwork and are definite field leaders. Coach Bleam mentioned to me that looking ahead in their schedule they feel that their General Hauling Cleanup Stone Mulch

upcoming games against Palisades (September 18) and Salisbury (September 20) are ones that they feel are going to be tough matchups. After that difficult week, I feel they are blessed with an easy schedule all the way out. Their only other tough fight may be their regular season finale against Notre Dame E.S. (October 10). I have no doubt that this team will not only make the playoffs, but will be serious contenders with real chances at going somewhere. e-mail: extrapoint@townandcountrygazette.com Facebook: Town & Country Gazette Twitter: @extrapointTCG
