From The Editor’s Desk. Next month will mark the Town & Country Gazette’s 27th year. It’s true that the magazine has had a few different incarnations and some staff changes over the years, as have most papers. But, I believe that we stay close to the spirit and tradition of the people who founded the Gazette in 1985. I’m proud of our publication, and grateful to be a part of the close-knit community in Northern Lehigh, Northampton, and Southern Carbon Counties. The community has given us so much. It takes the local businesses, churches, and people to keep us going and you haven’t failed us for nearly three decades. Recently, a coworker and I were thinking of ways that we could give back and show some appreciation to our loyal readers and others in the area. We decided that a giant yard/rummage sale to benefit the Northern Lehigh Food Bank would be a great way to help hungry families and begin moving the Gazette in a more civic-minded direction. After some plotting and planning the sale, to be held in the Gazette’s parking lot on 248 in Walnutport on Sunday Sept. 9th at 9 a.m., began

to come together. We currently have exceeded the amount of vendors I estimated and have lots of great prizes (including some Farm Aid tickets) we’re going to raffle off to people who donate 3 or more nonperishable food items. It’s a nice coincidence that our event to benefit the Food Bank is happening during Hunger Action Month. The idea is to raise awareness of how many of our friends and neighbors are suffering from hunger – nearly 49 million Americans, including 1 in 5 children, go to bed each night with an empty stomach. Supporting the food bank is a very worthy cause. Many of our friends and colleagues, even at competing publications, have agreed to help us spread the word about the rummage sale, which is a very generous and professional thing to do in my opinion!!! Please stop by our offices on Sept. 9th, browse the diverse selection of things for sale, maybe win some gift baskets or other prizes, and help support the Northern Lehigh Food Bank! 105th Northern Lehigh Halloween Parade Cancelled

By Alice Wanamaker This is no joke! As of press time there is one person on the Northern Lehigh Halloween Parade committee, and one person isn’t capable of that type of orchestrating on his or her own. Without YOUR help, there will be NO PARADE this year. Are you willing to let a 105-year tradition fall by the wayside? Are you willing to invest some of your time and effort into making sure that Mr. Williams and Channel 13 News are on Main Street come October

27, 2012? Then ACT NOW!!! Contact Laura at 484265-1028 to register yourself, your kids and your civic group for the parade committee today! We have less than two months to pull this together folks… let’s not waste time!!!

Friends of the Community

We are [writing] this because after several years of countless hours and many volunteers' hard work, we are coming up short. We are very close to finishing the construction of the pavilion and lavatory at the Slatington Trailhead. Some of the small items still need funding. The Boyer Family and others saved us with their generous donations, permitting us to get as far as we have. We do not want to stop now. We know that a few thousand dollars will put us back in the black and pay off the contractors that are working now. They have all donated a couple hundred dollars each in labor. The contractors have been great. If you can help out with any amount (nothing is too small plus donations are tax deductible) please make a check payable to The Northern Lehigh Historical Society and mark your check "Trail Head". Mail it to: Northern Lehigh Historical Society PO Box 101 Slatington, PA 18080 Thank You, Slatington Trailhead Construction Crew

Linda’s

By Chrissy Zopf On my first full day in Gladenbach I awoke at 6:25 a.m., stumbling around, half asleep, getting ready for my first day of school. I thought back to when the German students came to America and attended school at Northampton. Some teachers seemed genuinely intrigued by the German students, and displayed their pleasure at having foreign guests in the classroom, while others were indifferent to their arrival and carried on with class as though there were not multiple new bodies seated in the classroom. After preparing myself for the day, I sat down for breakfast; I was the first person ready, and the bus would arrive in less than fifteen minutes. I ate slowly and watched the minutes tick by when Sina's younger sister, Angelina crept quietly into the kitchen. I could tell that not only was she tired, but she was shy as well. I continued to eat in silence with Angelina, when finally, five minutes before the bus would be arriving, Sina arrived in the kitchen and began eating breakfast. I wondered to myself if she always cut time so close. As Sina and I walked outside I quickly learned something else. Although it was June, Germany Continued on Page 37

Bethany Wesleyan Erects Multi-use Center Work continues at Bethany Wesleyan Church in Cherryville as they construct a new multi-use facility on the site of the old foundry. The framework for the building was erected on Wednesday August 22 on the site of the future facility. The Family Life Center as it will be called is a Multi Ministry Worship Facility that will hold worship service, serve as a banquet facility and will also convert into a gymnasium for Bethany’s Upward Sports and other sports programs. The facility will also hold a dining area and café. The larger facility will enable Bethany Wesleyan

Church to reach out the community and provide a space for the larger events; including their annual egg hunt, Trunk or Treat and sporting events. The facility will provide seating for 1200 parishioners and allow for one large combined worship service, rather than the smaller ones that are currently being held. Bethany’s current congregation is between seven and eight hundred. Pastor Scott Weldon said he is happy to see this step in the process happen, “This has been going on for a few years” he said, “the multi-purpose building will allow our congregation to come together.” In addition to local community events, the new center will hosts The Penn-Jersey District of Wesleyan Churches events throughout the year. “We Hear You”

Written by local poet Pat Ritz in Oct. 2001, in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

“We hear you” As you dig beneath the gnarled, twisted steel, Scaling the piles of rubble, tons and tons of rubble Searching for life, searching for hope Listening, digging We hear you as you cry for your brothers, your comrades, your friends “We hear you.” “We hear you” He’s missing! She is missing! We sit in transfixed horror as we watch you wait As we watch you carry your pictures of love, of hope Waiting for news, waiting to know We hear your cries And we cry, “We hear you.” “We hear you.” We are a nation at war, Your loss will not go unpunished We will pull together, work together, and pray together This city is strong This country is strong This enemy will not prevail We listen and we wait, “We hear you.” We hear you sing through flickering candles flame, “Oh beautiful for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain America, America, God shed His grace on thee And crowned thy good with brotherhood From sea to shining sea.” “We hear you.”

Can You Spell That?

A woman becomes ill at home, and her husband calls 911 to get an ambulance. The operator says she’ll send someone out right away. “Where do you live?” the operator asks. “At the end of Eucalyptus Drive,” says the anxious husband. “Can you spell that for me?” the operator asks. There is a long pause. Finally the man says, “How about if I drag her over to Oak Street and you can pick her up there?”

Know Your Watershed Days The Watershed Coalition of the Lehigh Valley and its partners will sponsor “Know Your Watershed Days” across the Lehigh Valley from Friday, September 14 through Sunday, September 16. From streamside plantings and community garden cleanups, to interpretive nature walks and rain barrel workshops, “Know Your Watershed Days” activities will promote awareness of the Lehigh Valley’s many watersheds and water resources, the all-volunteer community watershed organizations that look after these resources and the Watershed Coalition of the Lehigh Valley. Additional goals for the day include recruiting new members to join local watershed groups and building interest to create community watershed organizations for watersheds in areas where no such group currently exists. Six community watershed and conservation organizations will host activities in watersheds in Northampton and Lehigh counties as part of “Know Your Watershed Days” on September 14, 15 and 16. Ride for Adam Roars Through Area Just some of the Riders who left Schnecksville for the Ride for Adam 2012. Story & Photos by Alice Wanamaker Nearly 200 bikes left the parking lot of Reiss Cycle in Walnutport just after 10 a.m. on Saturday August 25 to join the 2012 Ride for Adam, Poker Ride and Family Picnic in Schnecksville. The ride is just one of the events throughout the year put on by the Race for Adam Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to funding research projects to find a treatment and cure for Niemann-Pick Type C disease (NP-C) and related neurodegenerative disorders. There currently is no cure for the terminal disease Niemann-Pick Type C, which causes genetic mutations as well as lipid accumulation in the brain. Niemann-Pick Type C disease affects about 500 people worldwide. Adam Recke was just seven when he was diagnosed with the disease in 2005. He continues to undergo treatment as his family, friends and

the community work to help find a cure. Among his friends are Hope and Brad Reiss and the entire Reiss Cycle LLC. staff in Walnutport. Throughout the year they have helped by selling tickets for the event, soliciting basket raffle items from the community and they have used their shop to spread the word about the Ride For Adam and the organization. As a result, this years ride was the most successful and brought thousands out to the Schnecksville Fire Co. for the family event. Fundraising events continue throughout the year, and planning is already under way for the 7th annual Ride for Adam scheduled for August 17, 2013. To learn more about Adam and the Race for Adam Foundation visit www.raceforadam.org.

Bella Day By Laura Stauffer Most people are familiar with the strong odor of ammonia. In fact, because ammonia is such a versatile chemical, it is used in many things including fertilizers, plastics, explosives, pesticides and refrigeration in food processing and manufacturing industries. Naturally trace amounts of ammonia are found in the atmosphere, rain water, volcanoes, fertile soil and sea water. Exposure to ammonia for most people is limited to household cleaners and in such small quantities, does not pose a threat.

Exposure to ammonia is very prevalent, however, in the salon industry. Although dangerous, ammonia is an almost required element in professional hair color products. It’s primary purpose in these products is to bust open the hair shaft and cuticle, preparing the hair to accept your desired color. While this has been the most acceptable practice for many years in almost every salon throughout the nation, the use of ammonia in salons puts both the client and the salon professional at serious risk for long term health issues. In the short term, ammonia exposure can irritate and burn the eyes, throat and nose when inhaled, and create irritations in the skin when applied directly to the more sensitive skin of the scalp. In higher concentrations can induce severe coughing and choking fits and trigger asthma. Prolonged exposure can result in permanent scarring of the cornea and chemical burns of the skin and lungs. Bella Day you understand that, you are wondering if this is so bad, why are we doing it and is there an alternative. Some organic companies have gone to a more natural, less caustic blend of organic, natural and some chemical ingredients to open the hair shaft and cuticle in a gentle way. Their proprietary formulas have gone to using oils and mild heat to help the hair swell open instead of burning it open at the cuticle. With the cuticle gently opened by the heat, the color can deposit into the hair in a safe, healthy way and not damage the hair. When the heat is removed the swelling of the hair subsides and the cuticle with the color already inside closes and locks in the color with out the forcible treatment to the hair. This preserves the natural cuticle of the hair so you have less fading and banding in your color. It is a great hair health focused way of coloring your hair. A system like this helps leave behind the caustic, smelly, damaging hair processes for something more natural, healthy and long lasting. Next time you go to your favorite salon, ask them for a healthier alternative. Laura Stauffer at Miracolo Bella Hair & Wellness Spa email is info@miracolobella.com, website is www.miracolobella.com.

A fellow that is well informed in this Pennsylvania Dutch folk life through research and observation is William, or always “Bill” Reagan,

who lives between Belfast and Wind Gap. He wrote a long letter about trolleys in this area. There are too few people that take their time to write things down, so they aren’t forgotten. But Bill occupies himself with this and he also knows what he’s talking about. These are Bill’s words, “In 1900 I hung on the fence and watched the workers built the trolley way from Belfast to Wind Gap. He says there were teams of horses, wheelbarrows [maybe ‘Schupps’ was a reference to early graders or rollers; what’s your interpretation?], and dump wagons, and 30 Continued on Page 26

A Touch of Dutch Continued from Page 25 to 50 men. When the trolley way was completed, curiosity continued to consume Bill and he said one Sunday he walked to Wind Gap and rode the trolley back to his place. It cost five cents. The trolley company prospered so well that in a few years the ‘big shots’ from the company bought themselves a car to ride back and forth that looked liked a four-wheeled palace car, all in glass with green velvet curtains and trimmed 4571 CLOVER HILL CIRCLE SERVING THE GREATER LEHIGH VALLEY

fancy around the platform roof. In 1906 big things were happening. There were now trolleys going all over the area, from Allentown and Easton up to Portland, Pen Argyl and all about. The trolley company bought a nice grove in Wind Gap, right where the trolleys turn to go to Pen Argyl. The grove was about four acres. The company then built a band shell there. There was place for about a thousand people. During the summer, shows and movies were there every Friday and Saturday, costing ten cents. At the end of the park were switches for a 1,000 trolleys to stop there. [Really?] The trolleys were loaded full out to the platform and they also had many special cars show up. This park was there to draw in the people, so the trolleys in the area would have business [transporting them]. Those were the big days for the trolleys. That time no one would have thought that one day the palace car would be on the scrap heap and the trolley business done for.

mixed concrete, gypsum wallboard, aggregates, asphalt, paving and construction, precast solutions and pipe products. The company’s ambition is to be the cement supplier of choice in the market and create value for stakeholders continuously improving the consistency and quality of products. Lafarge’s commitment goes beyond producing cement of the highest quality, and making the plant a safe and satisfying place to work. Active involvement with community life and ongoing efforts to protect the environment are equally vital components of the plant’s mission. Since community involvement provides better understanding of the plant’s neighbors and their issues, it forms an important part of the company’s present and future planning. Employees of the plant reach out to the community in a variety of venues, including, but not limited to, a community newsletter, plant tours, educational programs, news releases, and participation and sponsorships supporting the local Northampton Area Chamber of Commerce. Lorraine Faccenda, Optimization Manager at Lafarge was pleased to accept the prestigious award. “Business of the Year Award signifies that we are not only succeeding as a company, but also as a good neighbor and well-respected member of the community” she said.

Deutsche Schule (School Continued from Page 37 was cold. I was shivering as I walked to the bus stop, I had not worn a jacket. When the bus pulled up, I had expected to see more than just school students on it, as it was a public bus. But upon looking at the sign, I learned that certain bus numbers will travel into surrounding cities, while others, such as the bus we were boarding, will only travel through the small villages surrounding Gladenbach and then into the town, making a final stop at the school. As I boarded, I held out the bus pass I had received at the welcome reception, but the driver did no so much as glance at me or the pass I was holding. Sina’s bus arrived to school incredibly early. We were probably the first people there. I sat, shivering, and I realized the air in the school was just as cold as the air outside. I then noticed the opened windows and thought back to when the German teachers had told us the Germans believe fresh air is healthy, despite the temperature. While waiting for other students to arrive, I pulled out the schedule Sina had given me the day before and looked over her classes. Not only was she taking three science classes, but also four foreign languages: English, Spanish, French, and Latin. As a sophomore in high school. In the German school system, the classes vary every day along with the times. Some days are shorter, while other days classes may be held until 5:15 p.m.. I was dreading the days of the week where I would be stuck in school until after 5 o’clock, one of which was Friday. Being in school until 5:15 on a Friday, the thought seemed so absurd. After what seemed like ages, Sina and I finally headed towards her first class, along with some other Americans who would also be in our class. The classroom setup, with tables pushed together to make an incomplete square, didn’t remind me of a classroom, and it took me a moment to even locate the teacher. When I did, I realized he was

dressed in jeans and a t-shirt. I had been looking for someone in a button down shirt, or skirt like you would see in Northampton. As the German students tried to scrounge for chairs, the other Americans and I stood awkwardly in the corner, waiting for seats. I didn’t know what to expect from the class, and I was nervous the teacher would try and make us join in class discussions, or ask us about ourselves in German. As it turns out, the teacher did not acknowledge our presence, so we either slept, read, or talked throughout class while the teacher rambled on in German. As the day progressed, I realized a lot, if not all the teachers were indifferent to a group of Americans sitting in the classroom. The ones that did converse with us did not even know we knew the German language. I was offended by this because in my mind, it didn’t make sense to be attending a German school if you couldn’t speak the language, but I brushed it off and expected that it wouldn’t be the last time I heard a German doubt my ability to communicate. After Sina’s third period class we walked towards the Break Hall, where all the students were enjoying a fifteen minute break. I looked around and saw

Deutsche Schule (School) Continued from Page 37 that there were no adults in the room. I couldn’t understand this, because at Northampton students cannot be left alone in a room without an adult present. I also noticed the walls were decorated in student artwork, giving the room an inspiring feeling that only art can give you. I thought about how Northampton should let the art students decorate and paint the art hallways, how it would look so much better than the bland, white walls that have no life, no personality. I dismissed the thought, knowing it was absurd to believe something like that would be allowed, but every day it somehow crept back into my mind. That day Sina and I left school after sixth period, we were done for the day. We took the bus back to Sina’s home in Sinkershausen where her grandmother prepared lunch for us. The rest of my days in Gladenbach were similar. Teachers showed indifference, and students were given freedoms I couldn’t imagine having back home. Although the classrooms in Gladenbach seemed rowdy at times, it seemed to work, the students knew their material, they passed their tests, and yet they weren’t burdened with too many rules to memorize. During my stay it was a requirement to give presentations on some aspect of American life. My partner, Rachel and I did a presentation on teenage life in Northampton, which included details of our school. After explaining bathroom passes and school security to a 7th grade German class, one boy boldly raised his hand. The bell rang right as he began to speak, “Your school sounds like a prison,” then the students filed out of the room, while I stood there, speechless and dumbfounded.

Walnut Street Playground 30th Anniversary Party Rescheduled

In honor of their association’s 30th anniversary, the Walnut Street Playground Association will hold a 30th Anniversary Celebration on Saturday September 22, from 5 to 10 p.m. on the playground. The previously scheduled event in August was rained out. The playground is located at 125 S. Walnut Street in Slatington, and parking is available across the street in the Municipal & Vigilant Fire Company parking lots. Join the association for a night of food, games, contests, music and karaoke! Featured food vendors will be Jon Rinker selling cheese steaks, pork BBQ, & pulled pork sandwiches, Tara Jenkins Italian Ices, and the playground will be selling hotdogs & soda & water out of the refreshment stand. For the music lovers in attendance they can dance and sing the night away listening to the sounds of DJ Skittlez. Throughout the night a variety of games and contests and raffles will be available. Enjoy a 30th Anniversary cupcake. One of the main contests will be sidewalk chalk drawing contest, sponsored by Crayola, and judged by Slatington Mayor Walt Niedermeyer. Other contests include, bean bag, ring toss, mini-golf putting and free throw shooting at the basketball court. Old-fashioned games include beanbag, ring toss, fishpond and more! The Northern Lehigh Community Center will be doing

hula hooping and arts and crafts, and the NLYAA Football cheering will be doing face painting and tattoos. Check our page out on Facebook Walnut Street Playground Association for the latest information, additions and schedule of events for the celebration. In the event of rain the celebration will be held indoors at the Vigilant Fire Company, 110 S. Walnut Street in Slatington. For more information, or groups wishing to set up/participate in the festivities please call Robert at (610) 554-4099.

to throw the ball a little more than the typical varsity football team and if the young slinger can succeed, the Tigers will mount some wins. Rookie coach, Brosky, is excited about his young players, “We have young guys that are really buying in to our program and our philosophy and that will just help us for this year and the future.”The Tigers may grow in to some success, but 2012 may be a bit too early to expect them to be in the winner’s circle. Northern Lehigh • Coach: Joe Tout (Seventh year, 51-20) • Last year: 10-2 overall, 9-1 in CL; beat North Schuylkill in D-11 2A semifinals; lost to Pen Argyl in D-11 final • Preview: The word rebuild just doesn’t seem to be in head coach Joe Tout’s vocabulary. The Bulldogs have yet to return to the total dominance they had during the Remaly, Kern and Gill era, but they have yet to rebuild as they just keep reloading. The road to a colonial league title will be tougher this year for the squad as there are other serious contenders in Pen Argyl, Southern Lehigh and Catasauqua. Northern Lehigh will have another successful season; I’m just not sure if they will make it as far as they are used to. • Last year: 9-3 Overall, 7-2 in LVC; lost to Nazareth in D-11 4A semi-finals. • Preview: Parkland produces a winning team almost every year and expect no different here in 2012. The Trojans have some questions however. The main one being if they can adjust to their newly adapted spread-offense. If some young players can step up and fill open spots successful, mixed with the veterans, Parkland will be right there when it is all said and done. Northampton • Coach: Jeff Brosky (First year) • Last year: 3-9 Overall, 2-7 in LVC • Preview: Northampton is coming off a rough year last fall where they found themselves at the bottom of the standings for the bulk of the season. This season they are ready to change things around with their new head coach, Jeff Brosky. Brosky has high-hopes for this season, “Our motto has been to instill trust, leadership and commitment. If we can get that instilled with each and every player I think it will act as a catalyst for them to play together out on the field.”The Konkrete Kids are very inexperienced. The players are young and talented, but the lack of games played could

be costly. They could get out of the basement, but don’t expect them to be moving to the attic. Lehighton • Coach: Tom McCarroll (First year) • Last year: 4-6 overall, 1-5 in MVC • Preview: Rookie head coach, McCarroll, will be learning this season right along with his team as most of his squad is sophomores. This young team will have to cope with dealing the newcomers in the MVC, Allen and Dieruff. The Indians will experience some growing pains, but that is expected with another young team. The MVC should be up for grabs this year, but I don’t think the Indians will have it in their grasp. Continued on Page 58 General Hauling Cleanup Stone Mulch

Book of Honor

The Slatington Public Library is now proudly displaying their book to honor local residents. This year the annual fund drive to support our library gave recepients the capabilty of making a donation in memory or honor of a friend or loved one. The names are then recorded with special designation in the "Book of Honor" located at the front desk of the library. We invite you to stop in the library to check out the many names already included on this special list. The Slatington Public Library has been providing service to the Northern Lehigh Community since 1936.
