1989 Slatington and Surrounding Communities History Book Is Being Reprinted! A hard cover reprint of the renowned 1989 history book, published in conjunction with Slatington's 125th anniversary, will soon be available from the Slatington History Preservation Committee, formerly known as the Slatington 150 History Committee. Don’t miss out on this once in a lifetime opportunity to own a genealogical and history revealing treasure. This book has been out of print for 28 years! The committee is only printing as many books as are pre-ordered. The hardbound 490 page 1989 book contained histories on Slatington, Walnutport and the villages comprising Washington Township along with industries, the Walnutport Canal, a comprehensive history on the local slate industry, and over 80 histories of abiding families in the Northern Lehigh Area. The following names are just a few examples of the surnames contained in the 1989 book: Altrichter, Andrews, Best, Bittner, Blose, Davies, Frantz, Fritzinger, German, Hankee, Hughes, Heintzelman, Jones, Kern, Kistler, Krause, Kuntz, Mummey, Neff, Owens, Papay, Peters, Remaley, Rex, Roberts, Solt and Williams. If you
are a relative or descendant of one of these families and do not already own the 89 book, reserve your copy today! Books are expected to be available by Christmas, 2017. The deadline to order books is October 31, 2017. Many people who purchased the 2014 history book entitled Slatington at 150 Years: More Stories to Share, should have received a post card a few months ago with more detailed information. The 1989 history book will make an excellent companion to the 2014 history book, and is a must have for those interested in local history and genealogy. Please direct questions to Tim Snyder at 610-767-5935 or visit us on Facebook: Slatington History Preservation Committee for pricing and further information.

MEET THE STAFF What sweet treat do you crave? Chocolate Cake with Buttercream Icing. Donna Bachman A sweet treat that I crave is chocolate. I love anything chocolate, but if I had to pick one it would definitely be a Hershey’s with Almonds candy bar. Lacey Remaley Tastycakes! My favorite three are chocolate cupcakes and peanut butter and chocolate kandy kakes. Tony Pisco
This is really hard to narrow it down to one thing, because I have a really bad sweet tooth. I love anything with strawberries, so I'm going to have to say a white cake with strawberry filling and buttercream icing from Weis. Kathy Marsh The real question is what sweet treat do I not crave? Anything from candy to chocolate covered strawberries or cupcakes, particularly my mom’s Ultimate Vanilla cupcakes. Cat Stroh

Mako to Host Senior Expo in Cherryville Area senior citizens residing in the 183rd Legislative District are invited to Rep. Zach Mako’s (R-Lehigh/Northampton) Senior Expo on Friday, Sept. 15, at Bethany Wesleyan Church in Cherryville. “I am excited to host this senior expo,” Mako said. “My predecessor held this event for many years, and I know to expect a large crowd. I encourage senior citizens, their family members and caregivers to stop by for some great information, valuable health screenings and a chance to meet up with old friends.” The expo is free to attend and will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The church is located at 675 Blue
Mountain Drive, Cherryville. Seniors who attend the expo will have the opportunity to visit with more than 70 local, state and federal agencies and organizations offering information on programs and services available to seniors. Free flu shots will be available, assuming no manufacturing delays. Free vision and blood pressure screenings also will be offered, along with balance assessments. The Pennsylvania Mobile Veterans Service Van will be present to assist veterans. Also on hand will be CarFit, a free, interactive and educational program designed to improve older driver safety by providing information on minor adjustments that can help a senior’s vehicle “fit” better. To schedule a CarFit appointment for the day of the expo, please call Mildred Ozoa from the Bethlehem Health Bureau at 484-239-2890. For more information, contact Mako’s offices at (610) 502-2701 or (610) 760-9805, or visit his website at www.RepMako.com. COOKING WITH CATHERINE
INGREDIENTS • ½ c. butter (1 stick) • 1 c. sugar • 2 eggs, beaten • 3 bananas finely crushed (try 4 bananas for extreme moistness and deliciousness) • 1½ c. flour • 1 tsp. baking soda • ½ tsp. salt • ½ tsp. vanilla (optional)
Recipe courtesy of Food.com
Best Banana Bread
DIRECTIONS • Preheat oven to 350. • Cream together butter and sugar. • Add eggs and crushed bananas, combine well. • Sift together flour, soda and salt. Add to creamed mixture. Add vanilla. • Mix until just combined, do not over mix.
• Pour into greased and floured loaf pan. • Bake at 350 degrees for 55 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.
If you’ve been searching for the best banana bread recipe, look no further, you have found it. I’ve tried two or three other recipes and this one is by far the yummiest. I like to use 3 ½ bananas, the flavor is awesome and the bread is extremely moist. I like to add the vanilla extract but leave out nuts and chocolate chips. I err on the plain side and just banana is all it needs, in my opinion. If you are baking for a large family/household, I’d suggest doubling the recipe right away- this banana bread will not be around for long!

Lehigh Township Historical Society News Submitted by RUTH HALL KENT
By the time you read this, you've missed the early deadline to sign up for our special event "Once Around the Township" on September 23rd. Stop by anyway, we may be able to accommodate walk-ins on the day of the event. Tours begin at 11 am and 12:30 pm to learn about and celebrate the historic former one and two room schoolhouses around Lehigh Township, 17 of which still exist as private homes or have other uses. There was an ad in the last issue of the Gazette about this event. For more details and tour information, please visit our website (www.lehightownshiphistoricalsociety.org) or call (and leave a message) 610-440-0151. You can also see information about this event on our Facebook page. In addition to "Once Around the Township" on September 23rd we are holding our annual Open House at St. Paul's Schoolhouse from 10:30 am to 4:00 pm. You can visit the restored St. Paul's Schoolhouse which contains many historic artifacts and an old school bell. St. Paul's was built in 1865 and used until 1951 as a school for grades 1-8. During your visit complete the scavenger hunt in search of various school house items. Admission to St. Paul's
schoolhouse is free, but donations are welcomed. During August, Lehigh Township Historical Society welcomed 4 new members and also received donations of several items for our Historical Centre displays. The Society is grateful for the donation from Cindy Beck Deppe and the Beck Family of a copy of their recently published book "Travel Along With Becky's Camera", a collection of photographs taken by their father, William Beck. We also thank her for donating the profits from the book sales to the Historical Society. Once again the Historical Centre will be decorated with an abundance of beautiful and colorful fall mums on September 30th. Stop by between 9 am and 1 pm to see the display and take a tour through the museum. We encourage groups and organizations such as scout troops to visit both the St. Paul's Schoolhouse and the Historical Centre. Please call 610-440-0151 and leave a message to arrange a date and time that suits your organization or group. You can also send a message through our website. Don't forget to like and follow us on Facebook. We hope to see you soon!

10 Tips: Cut Back on Your Kid’s Sweet Treats Source: choosemyplate.gov
Limit the amount of foods and beverages with added sugars your kids eat and drink. If you don’t buy them, your kids won’t get them very often. Sweet treats and sugary drinks have a lot of calories but few nutrients. Most added sugars come from sodas, sports drinks, energy drinks, juice drinks, cakes, cookies, ice cream, candy, and other desserts. 1. Serve small portions It’s not necessary to get rid of all sweets and desserts. Show kids that a small amount of treats can go a long way. Use smaller bowls and plates for these foods. Have them share a candy bar or split a large cupcake. 2. Sip smarter Soda and other sugar-sweetened drinks contain a lot of sugar and are high in calories. Offer water when kids are thirsty. 3. Use the check-out lane that does not display candy Most grocery stores will have a candy-free checkout lane to help moms out. Waiting in a store line makes it easy for children to ask for the candy that is right in front of their faces to tempt them.

4. Choose not to offer sweets as rewards By offering food as a reward for good behavior, children learn to think that some foods are better than other foods. Reward your child with kind words and comforting hugs, or give them non-food items, like stickers, to make them feel special. 5. Make fruit the everyday dessert Serve baked apples, pears, or enjoy a fruit salad. Or, serve yummy frozen juice bars (100% juice) instead of high-calorie desserts. 6. Make food fun Sugary foods that are marketed to kids are advertised as “fun foods .” Make nutritious foods fun by preparing them with your child’s help and being creative together. Create a smiley face with sliced bananas and raisins. Cut fruit into fun and easy shapes with cookie cutters. 7. Encourage kids to invent new snacks Make your own snack mixes from dry whole-grain cereal, dried fruit, and unsalted nuts or seeds. Provide the ingredients and allow school-aged kids to choose what they want in their “new” snack. 8. Play detective in the cereal aisle Show kids how to find the amount of total sugars on the Nutrition facts label in various cereals. Challenge them to compare cereals they like and select the one with the lowest amount of sugar. 9. Make treats “treats,” not everyday foods Treats are great once in a while. Just don’t make treat foods an everyday thing. Limit sweet treats to special occasions. 10. If kids don’t eat their meal, they don’t need sweet “extras” Keep in mind that candy or cookies should not replace foods that are not eaten at meal time.

10 Tips: MyPlate Snack Tips for Parents Source: choosemyplate.gov
Snacks can help children get the nutrients needed to grow and maintain a healthy weight. Prepare single-serving snacks for younger children to help them get just enough to satisfy their hunger. Let older kids make their own snacks by keeping healthy foods in the kitchen. Visit the children's section of ChooseMyPlate to help you and your kids select a satisfying snack. 1. Save time by slicing veggies Store sliced vegetables in the refrigerator and serve with dips like hummus or low-calorie dressing. Top half a whole-wheat English muffin with spaghetti sauce, chopped vegetables, and low-fat shredded mozzarella and melt in the microwave. 2. Mix it up For older school-age kids, mix dried fruit, unsalted nuts, and popcorn in a snack-size bag for a quick trail mix. Blend plain fat-free or low-fat yogurt with 100% fruit juice and frozen peaches for a tasty smoothie. 3. Grab a glass of milk A cup of low-fat or fat-free milk or milk alternative (soy milk) is an easy way to drink a healthy snack.
4. Go for great whole grains Offer whole-wheat breads, popcorn, and wholeoat cereals that are high in fiber and low in added sugars, saturated fat, and sodium. Limit refinedgrain products such as snack bars, cakes, and sweetened cereals. 5. Nibble on lean protein Choose lean protein foods such as low-sodium deli meats or unsalted nuts. Wrap sliced, lowsodium deli turkey around an apple wedge. Store hard-cooked (boiled) eggs in the refrigerator for kids to enjoy any time. 6. Keep an eye on the size Snacks shouldn’t replace a meal, so look for ways to help your kids understand how much is enough. Store snack-size bags in the cupboard and use them to control serving sizes. 7. Fruits are quick and easy Fresh, frozen, dried, or canned fruits can be easy “grab-and-go” options that need little preparation. Offer whole fruit and limit the amount of 100% juice served. 8. Consider convenience A single-serving container of low-fat or fat-free

yogurt or individually wrapped string cheese can be just enough for an after-school snack. 9. Swap out the sugar Keep healthier foods handy so kids avoid cookies, pastries, or candies between meals. Add seltzer water to a ½ cup of 100% fruit juice instead of offering soda. 10. Prepare homemade goodies For homemade sweets, add dried fruits like apricots or raisins and reduce the amount of sugar in the recipe. Adjust recipes that include fats like butter or shortening by using unsweetened applesauce or prune puree for half the amount of fat.

These are missing, yes certainly; The splint-seat chairs, the drop leaf table, With a fresh, red checkered table cloth, A bowl of hickory nuts. The rocking chair with a sheepskin on it, The sewing box with a lid on it, In the corner a spinning wheel; In front of the fire, the dog and cat are missing, Which should be lying at the same place, Yes, now I know it exactly. These I bought here and there, And stood them around, rightly so Like it was as I remember it; Yet it appears to me that the candlesticks Seem to pull themselves away from everything, Like [being] strange to all this stuff. See now once, more is still missing – O yes, how can this be forgotten – Boy am I ever dumb! Mom doing her mending, Pop reading the newspaper, The children sitting around them. I see it all now, [but] it can’t be, One can never ever call them here, They are sleeping in rest, From which no one on this earth Awakens [them] anymore and sorrows are over, Their earthly service finished. With everything that is familiar gone, No wonder the candlesticks are ‘Sorrowing’ there the entire time; If it would be possible that one could buy it, Then I would give my last cent To have the past here again. I have already ‘built’ many dreams There in front of my old fireplace, Sweet and pure and beautiful; I can’t do anything for the candlesticks, They do not dream like you and I, So they stand there all alone! One of the best ways for students to gain experience in their degree or field is to volunteer at a related agency or organization. LCCC students will have an opportunity to discuss volunteer opportunities with organizations from the Lehigh Valley and surrounding areas on ways they can gain experience, build skills and give back to the community. Volunteering is a great way to build your resume and get your foot in the door. This event is free and open to the public. Space is still available for agencies and organizations who would like to be involved. Interested organizations can contact LCCC’s Career Development Center at careerservices@lccc.edu or 610-799-1090. News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || SEPTEMBER 7, 2017

33 Healthier Ways to Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth Source: www.greatist.com By Kate Morin
I’ve always been one of those people that needs something sweet after dinner. It doesn’t need to be fancy, just something to satisfy my sweet tooth and stop it from nagging me. But sticking to just a small, sweet snack can be tricky. Let's be honest: Anything that seriously satisfies our sweet tooth isn't going to be the epitome of a healthy meal. Though all of these snacks contain (gasp!) sugar, we aimed to find lower-sugar options
that offer something beneficial, whether it be a sneaky superfood (like strawberries and grapes) or additional nutrients like fiber or protein. So here are 33 less guilty ways to indulge any sweet tooth. 1. Chocolate-Dipped Strawberry Combat chocolate’s not-so-healthy side by using it as a semi-sweet jacket on superfoods, like strawberries! Dip and let set in the refrigerator until the chocolate coating has hardened.

2. Choco-Nut Popcorn Pop a small bag of natural popcorn and top with 1 tablespoon melted peanut butter and a dusting of cocoa powder. Crunchy and the perfect amount of sweetness! Not sweet enough? Try swapping peanut butter for Nutella. 3. Frozen Chocolate Banana This is the perfect frozen sweet treat with some extra nutritional punch! Bananas are a great source of vitamins C and B6, and are also packed with fiber and potassium. Peel a banana, cut into two equal halves, and freeze. Once solid, take out and roll in melted dark chocolate. While the chocolate’s still melty, roll in whichever crunchy topping you like— sprinkles, nuts, and granola all work well! Return to the freezer until the chocolate is set (at least an hour). Enjoy! 4. Yogurt Parfait Top 1 cup Greek yogurt (plain or vanilla) with your choice of toppings: crumbled graham crackers or granola, nuts, and fruit are all healthy choices. Add some shaved chocolate if you must! 5. Fresh Fruit Can’t get more simple than this. Any piece of fresh fruit should offer enough natural sugar to fill those cravings. Plus, it’s definitely the healthiest choice and you get added nutrients and fiber! 6. Dark Chocolate Sorry, friends—not any old chocolate bar will
send you to healthful heaven. But dark chocolate (think more than 70 percent cacao), which lacks all the added fat and sugar of classic milk chocolate, can actually be a healthy treat in moderation. Dark chocolate is packed with antioxidants and can even help regulate levels of the stress hormone, cortisol. 7. Chocolate Milk Not only is chocolate milk a great way to fit a hint of sweetness into your day, research shows it’s actually an effective post-workout recovery drink, too! 8. Smoothie It’s easy to find an easy, healthy smoothie recipe for breakfast, a snack, or dessert. In fact, here are 54 healthy smoothie recipes sweet enough to fill any of those cravings. 9. PB&J We’ll admit it: A good portion of the Greatist office is addicted to peanut butter and jelly. Half of a classic sandwich on whole wheat bread (grape, strawberry, or whatever type of jelly you like) provides an excellent amount of sweetness with a little dose of protein and fiber to boot. 10. All-Fruit Popsicle There’s no added sugar in these sweet and cool treats. Simply puree watermelon chunks and some Continued on page 38

lime juice, freeze, and enjoy. If it’s not watermelon season, try any other juicy fruit: Pears, peaches, or berries with a touch of apple juice for base will all make great pops. 11. Cafe Mocha This is the perfect way to get a kick of caffeine and a serving of dark chocolate all at once. Opt for low-fat milk and stick to a small size to keep the calorie count low.

12. Banana Ice Cream This one-ingredient ice cream is the perfect afterdinner treat. If you’re feeling fancy, try mixing it up and adding in a peanut butter swirl or a few teaspoons of cocoa powder for some chocolate flavor. 13. Nutella Yogurt Dip with Fruit This is a healthier take on chocolate fondue. Instead of pure chocolate, mix Nutella with Greek yogurt and use as a dip with some fresh fruit or low-sugar cookies or crackers.

14. Cereal and Milk You can make this one as healthy or unhealthy as you like. Opt for a high-fiber, whole-grain cereal if you're going the healthy route and sweeten with a bit of honey or cinnamon. Of course, if you feel like going the "naughtier" route, there's always chocolate chex. 15. Sorbet Especially during warmer months, keeping a pint of healthy homemade sorbet on hand is the perfect way to fill sugar cravings without overdoing it on the white stuff. This super-simple plum sorbet doesn’t use any sugar—just 3 little tablespoons of honey per quart (and we promise there’s no lack of sweetness!). 16. KIND Bar These are a Greatist HQ staple. Kind bars come in a ton of awesome slightly-sweet flavors (including a few drizzled in chocolate — yum) perfect for sweet tooth snacking. Plus, you get a dose of omega 3s and protein. Go for a full-sized bar if your stomach’s grumbling, or opt for a "mini" if hunger pangs haven’t quite set in. 17. Graham Cracker with Peanut Butter This is a classic combo. The graham cracker is just sweet enough and the peanut butter adds a luxurious silky smooth texture. If you need a little more sweetness, opt for chocolate or cinnamon4571 CLOVER HILL CIRCLE SERVING THE GREATER LEHIGH VALLEY
flavored graham crackers. Bonus points for getting an extra dose of calcium when enjoyed with a small glass of low-fat milk! 18. Peanut Butter and Chocolate Pretzels A little salty sweet combo can cure those sugary cravings. Microwave 1 square of dark chocolate and 1 teaspoon natural peanut butter until melted, and dip 1 large or 10 mini pretzel rods. 19. Frozen Greek Yogurt Drops This one’s brilliant. yogurt with ½ cup frozen berries and stir it all up until the fruit has broken down and the mixture has an even consistency. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, and drop 1/4 teaspoons of the mixture onto the sheet, leaving enough room between each drop so they don’t touch. Freeze for a few hours until solid and pour all the drops into a plastic baggie. Store in the freezer until you’re ready to snack! 20. Fruit Leather Fruit-by-the-Foot? Not exactly a healthier choice. But a low-sugar, fruit-only dried fruit leather can be a great way to satisfy a sweet tooth. Just make sure to find a brand with no added sugar. 21. Baked Apple This treat is easy to make ahead and reheat, or whip up in an instant right when you want it. Stuff the apples with oats, nuts, and just a little honey for sweetness. 22. Pudding Chocolate, vanilla, pistachio—take whichever flavor you like most and whip some up with skim milk. Enjoy ½ cup without any guilt! Top with some fresh berries for added fiber.

23. Fruit and Cottage Cheese Not only does this option satisfy sweet teeth, it provides a perfect serving of filling protein, too. If plain fruit isn’t sweet enough, try drizzling with honey or mixing in a teaspoon of cocoa powder. 24. Frozen Grapes Pop a vine in the freezer for a few hours and out comes a long-lasting, slightly sweet treat packed with antioxidants and other nutrients. The biggest health boost? Resveratrol, which studies suggest may help lower levels of LDL cholesterol and promote blood vessel health. 25. Animal Crackers A small handful of animal crackers is not just an ideal snack for kindergarteners. A good-sized handful (about 16 crackers) has just about 120 calories and only 7g of sugar. 26. Hot Chocolate Skim (or soy) milk can make a healthful base to this slightly sweet drink—just don’t overdo it on the chocolate syrup. 27. Waffle-wich Time to give that Eggo a makeover. Start with a whole-grain version of the classic frozen waffle. Toast to desired crispiness and slice in half. Top one half with 1 tablespoon peanut butter and 2 sliced strawberries. Top with other half, and enjoy! 28. Flavored Greek Yogurt Typically, we opt for plain yogurt with our own tailored flavorings to cut back on sugar. However,

if you’re looking to indulge a bit in the first place, a small cup of flavored Greek yogurt is a great option. Even though it has some sugar, it also offers a good amount of protein and will keep you full until that next meal. 29. Cinnamon Toast No, Cinnamon Toast Crunch doesn’t count. Instead, toast up a slice of whole-grain bread and top with ½ teaspoon of butter (or substitute), ¼ teaspoon of sugar, and as much cinnamon as your heart desires! 30. Trail Mix (with Dark Chocolate) A small serving of a healthy mix of nuts like almonds and pistachios with a few nice chewy pieces of dried fruit (like cranberries or cherries) and some dark chocolate pieces makes a great snack mix with good nutritional value too. 31. “Banana Butter” Rice Cake Here’s a surprise: Bananas are so sweet on their own they can help sweeten any treat. Mash ½ a ripe banana until mushy, and swirl in a teaspoon of peanut butter. Spread on a rice cake, and enjoy! 32. Yogurt Dipped Fruit This one's sweet—literally. Start by making the

yogurt coating mixture by combining 1 cup of your favorite Greek yogurt with 1/4 cup confectioner's sugar. Blend until completely smooth. Now get dipping: Coat your favorite fruits (grapes, bananas, apple slices, and strawberries work well) in the yogurt mixture and set on a parchment-lined cookie sheet. Once full, place the sheet in the freezer until the yogurt hardens. (The sugar is what creates the semi-hard shell on the outside of the fruit. If you like, you can omit the sugar and just keep the fruit frozen so the yogurt "shell" stays intact.) 33. Blueberry Frozen Yogurt When ice cream cravings hit, try whipping up some of this frozen blueberry-based treat.

Fireman Statue History Slatington Hose Company #1 ordered this Fireman Drinking Fountain August 27, 1909. The cast iron base was made by E.T. Barnum Company, Detroit and the Fireman Statue was cast by J.W. Fisk Iron Works, New York at a cost of $700. After some controversy, it was placed at this location April 23, 1910. The Fireman Statue is composed of .01% magnesium,.08 % copper, .09% iron, .28% cadmium, 2.4 % lead, and 90 to 95% zinc and tin. This Fireman Statue has witnessed many changes in our town. For many years the Borough painted the statue silver. The Valley Green Bar Stool Brothers brought the statue back to life for the 1964 on October 30, 1979, a truck knocked our beloved Fireman Statue to the sidewalks severing his head and severely damaging his body. It could have been the end of this landmark. Slatington Hose Company #1 formed a committee and the out pouring of support created a 9-month effort for his return. The highest bid to replace the statue was $22,000. A local plumber Eugene Hankee and Bruce Altrichter stepped up and restored this Fireman Statue for free. A testament to their skilled labor is the very fact that he is stil with us today. In 1980 many changes were made to ensure this statue’s safety.
With great celebration and a parade, our beloved fireman statue was rededicated July 19, 1980. Since that time, Hose Co. #1 has kept the lantern burning, given him a fresh coat of paint as needed, and dealt with continuing rust problems of the base. In 2017 a new problem arose with a deteriorating mount. After reengineering the mounting system and repainting the base and statue, the work was completed in 104 days. Our beloved Fireman Statue was returned to his place of honor on August 5, 2017. Slatington Hose Co #1 thanks all who have made this event possible.
