Buying a house is a highly personal decision because homes represent the largest single purchase most people will make in their lifetime. Similarly, selling your home is another incredibly personal decision. When you sell your home you are physically stepping away from all those memories that have been created there. To help you with either of these decisions, be sure and read “Buying or Selling a Home in 2023.” You find good tips, as well as market insights to be aware of in this post-pandemic market.

“Inflation Reduction Act” of last year has created home-owner benefits in tax breaks and rebates for many kinds of energy-efficient home improvements. See “Making a Home Energy Efficient” for details, as well as a link to much more information than we can cover in just one article.
If you’re a senior, be sure and read “Safer Kitchens for Seniors” for simple and not too expensive remedies to a range of common kitchen safety issues. Not only will it make your kitchen safer for you, but more comfortable to work in as well.
Throughout our region there are many very old homes and a good number of them are equipped with radiator heat. In “Living (and decorating) with Radiators” you’ll find out about these very effective 100-year-old heating systems. Yes, they do take up floor space, but well-maintained radiators are a terrific source of heat. We will also address one of the biggest issues with radiators: incorporating them successfully into how you decorate a room.
And finally, there are “Inexpensive Ways to Organize your Closet” that we will share with you. Whether you have a modest apartment closet or a large walk-in, we’ll bring you tips from expert organizers to make your closet more tidy and manageable.
So please enjoy this issue and then join us next time when we will celebrate Mother’s Day and take a look at summer camping and “middle age” fitness. See you then!

Buying a house – in any market – is a highly personal decision. Because homes represent the largest single purchase most people will make in their lifetime, it’s crucial to be in a solid financial position before diving in. Using a mortgage calculator to estimate your monthly housing costs based on your down payment and interest rate will go a long way to preparing you to buy your home.
Apartment for rent Danielsville: Half double. 3 bedroom, 1 bath, $1250 per month. Includes heat, electric, water, sewer and garbage. Washer/dryer hookup. Off-street parking. In-ground swimming pool. Call 610-417-9568. (3/21)
Trying to predict what might happen in the housing market this year is not the best homebuying strategy. If you are sitting on the sidelines today hoping for lower prices tomorrow, you may end up being disappointed. A widespread, national price decline is not expected.
Do you have broken A/C or dehumidifiers that you don't want to pay to have removed? If so, please call 610-737-5119 to schedule a free pick-up and removal. Items must be easily accessible. (10/3/19)
Low Housing Inventory
One key issue that is sustaining higher home prices is low housing inventory. That has been a challenge since the housing market crashed in 2008 and the construction of new homes plummeted.

buying a home based on your budget and needs. If you find a home you love in an area you love, and it also fits your budget, then chances are it might be right for you. However, if you make too many sacrifices and shave things too closely just to get into a house, you may end up with buyer’s remorse, potentially forcing you to sell the house at some cost.
Tips for Buying Today
Even as prices soften due to higher interest rates, you may realize that the area where you want to buy a home is still out of reach, so it’s important to be flexible. If you badly want a house and can work remotely or switch jobs, moving to lowerpriced housing markets is a good idea to consider. Millions of Americans have already done that, especially during the last two to three years.

That inventory problem has not fully reversed, and according to experts, won’t in 2023. Having the housing supply remaining stuck at near historic lows has propped up current demand compared to other downturns, sustaining higher home prices.

Only the best prepared, with their financing lined up, a solid understanding of what they can afford, and constant checking of prices and listings
will be successful in today’s highly-competitive market. By preparing in advance you can know how much your monthly payment will be –including taxes – and how well that fits into your budget.
Tips for Selling Today
The first step for a successful sale in today’s housing market is to find a listing agent who knows the area and comes highly recommended. A good agent will work closely with you to price your home competitively while fielding questions and offers from prospective buyers.
Even though the market may still be tipped in your favor as a seller, it’s in your best interest to present your home in the best possible light. Even if you don’t have cash dedicated to renovations and repairs – many don’t, a little sweat equity can go a long way. The first step is to declutter, organize and clean. Even if your home is outdated, a clean space gives buyers a chance to envision the home’s potential.

Making a Home Energy Efficient
SOURCE: washingtonpost.com (edited)
If you want to play a role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, you’ll find that it’s getting cheaper and easier to upgrade your home to be more energy efficient. And now, the federal government is likely to pick up some of the tab as the result of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) that was passed last year. Remember: Our area has many experienced contractors who can help you with any of these projects. Here are some of the best ways to make your home more energy efficient. All the items listed below are eligible for some level of tax credit or rebate due to the Inflation Reduction Act. A word of advice: Before making any of these major purchases, be sure you understand if you qualify for one of the rebates or tax credits – and to what dollar amount.
Heat Pump
Heat pumps are an energy-efficient alternative to furnaces, which are frequently powered by natural gas, a fossil fuel. Heat pumps can replace

though they are getting more affordable, with models starting around $1,000.
The IRA includes an $840 rebate for people with qualifying household incomes to purchase an electric range. Induction stoves and traditional electric coil stoves would qualify. The rebates are available to people making up to 150 percent of the median income in their area.
Solar Panels
Solar panels that convert the sun’s energy into electricity can significantly reduce a home’s energy bills and reliance on the energy grid. But they can
air conditioners and even hot water heaters. They work by pulling heat from outside and pumping it into the home to raise the internal temperature, reversing the process to provide air conditioning.
The new law includes a credit of as much as $2,000 to help homeowners purchase heat pumps, which can cost anywhere from $1,500 to more than $10,000. Heat pumps also are included in a new rebate program included in the IRA to help lowand medium-income homeowners purchase certain electric appliances.
Induction Stove
An induction stove delivers more efficient cooking heat than either gas ranges or conventional electric stovetops. Induction stoves can be pricey,

be expensive to install, with costs ranging above $20,000.
The IRA increases the 26 percent tax credit for solar panels and installation to 30 percent for the next 10 years. The Energy Department says the
tax credit will cut the cost of installing rooftop solar by more than $7,500 for an average system.
Home Battery
Solar panels collect and produce energy in daylight hours, but that’s not always when the energy is needed most. A home battery storage unit paired with solar panels stores excess energy until it is needed; some states and utilities also allow households to sell energy back to the grid.

Safer Kitchens for Seniors
SOURCE: aarp.com (edited)
For seniors, whether you live alone or not, the house has many potential areas of hazard. Those can range from a lack of outdoor lighting along paths or steps without non-slip treads, to any number of things in the kitchen. In this article we’re going to focus on the kitchen and look at ways you can make your kitchen a safer and more comfortable place to be.

Here are nine easy, and not very expensive, safety upgrades that can make your kitchen a much safer and much more comfortable place for you to work in. We start with nine questions for you and then provide a remedy you can use if the safety issue exists in your kitchen.

If the answer is no: Increase task lighting at the sink, stove and work areas. Use the highest wattage bulb allowed by the fixture. The increased lighting will make it easier for you to see things as you work. It will also increase your safety particularly when working with hot pans and sharp knives.
2. Are cabinets and cupboards easy to open?
If the answer is no: Install C or D-type handles on cabinets and cupboards for a more comfortable and secure grip.
3. Are the stove controls safely reached, so your hand doesn't come close to the
flame or electric coils?
If the answer is no: If there are no young children in the house, consider purchasing a stove that has the controls at the front. You might also consider adding touch and color-contrasted controls if you or anyone else has low vision.
4. Is a fire extinguisher within easy reach of the stove?
If the answer is no: Mount an ABC-rated fire extinguisher in an easy to reach location near the stove.

If the answer is no: Install adjustable shelving to increase access to items in upper cabinets. Install pull-out shelves and corner Lazy Susan turntables under counters and in corner cabinets.
7. Does the sink faucet have an anti-scald device?
If the answer is no: Install a pressure-balanced,
temperature regulated faucet and keep it at 120° or less.

If the answer is no: Create a workspace that has knee clearance by installing pull-out cabinetry or by removing cabinet doors and shelves so you can work while seated.
9. Do you use wax on your floors?
If the answer is yes: Avoid using floor wax and don't walk on a just-cleaned floor until it has completely dried. This is a major slipping hazard. By putting these remedies into place if needed, you will increase both your comfort in the kitchen while working, as well as your safety.

Yes, radiators take up floor space, but wellmaintained radiators are a terrific source of heat. One of the biggest issues with radiators is incorporating them successfully into how you decorate a room. Before we get to that, let’s get to “know” our radiators and how to take care of them.
How Radiators Work
Radiators are essentially coils of metal that act as heat exchangers – powered by either steam or hot water. They bring thermal energy from your boiler into individual rooms.
Steam versions tend to be found in buildings built before 1940. They are hotter to the touch than water radiators and more prone to making clanging and banging noises. With a hot water radiator, you’ll usually see two pipes going into the radiator and a release valve somewhere on the unit for “bleeding” trapped air.
Experts say a properly maintained and installed
radiator system shouldn’t need to be bled of trapped air before you turn the heat on each year. But if your radiator bangs frequently or doesn’t seem to heat as well as it should, call in a plumbing or heating professional to check your system.
It’s worth tracking down an HVAC contractor (or sometimes, a plumber) that specializes in radiators. Most of these systems are 100 years old, and you need someone who understands them. To find a specialist near you, look for HVAC companies or contractors that specialize in older homes.
Decorating Radiators
Radiators might seem like space hogs or impediments to your décor, but they can be beautiful in their own right. Radiators are meant to be seen and can be incorporated into your room décor in several ways, including with the use of paint. Several very appropriate colors that can be used on radiators include bronze, gold and silver.
TIP: Before painting your radiators, consult a paint store about which types of paint will withstand high heat and won’t flake.

You’ll want to have your radiators turned off when you paint them. Scrub them down with a wet sponge, getting between the coils to remove dust. Wedge a drop cloth or some newspapers on the floor underneath, and expect to apply one to two thorough coats.
You can also have your radiators professionally removed, then stripped and dipped in matte or high-gloss paint by a restoration business.
Hiding Radiators
There are several ways you can “hide” your radiators in the room. Still using paint, you can camouflage your radiators by coating them in the

Sometimes radiators create challenges that are too thorny for paint to solve: They complicate furniture placement, especially in smaller houses. In those cases, you can consider incorporating the radiator into furniture. For instance, you can hire a carpenter to carve out space within a built-in bookcase or encase it in a window seat.
TIP: Just be sure to leave either the front or the top of the radiator exposed (or veiled by metal mesh) so the unit can still effectively put off heat.
Use your radiators as shelving
For the most part, radiators get nicely warm, but not sizzling – 70 to 90 degrees – meaning you can safely put some things on top of them. Covered radiators work well as shelves or consoles for items such as pottery or heat-tolerant plants, such as cactuses and succulents.
TIP: Be aware that any radiator can warp fabric that touches it regularly, such as curtains, and can also melt plastic or candles.
No reservations needed or taken parties will be seated together so please meet your party before coming into the fire company- thank you!

Inexpensive Ways to Organize your Closet
SOURCE: washingtonpost.com (edited)
Whether you have a modest apartment closet or a large walk-in, these tricks from expert organizers can help you create a more tidy and manageable closet. The best part? Some of these ideas won’t cost you anything.
1
/ Purge
Even the biggest closets get overstuffed at some point, so to start the process, clear out the excess
before you do anything else. To keep your closet manageable for the long haul, do a purge right before spring and again before fall. Did you wear that outfit in the past year, do those pants still fit you? If the answer is no, it may be time to donate or sell those items.
Another way to approach the “closet purge” without making it a major undertaking is to consider the “one-in, one-out” method. Get rid of something old when you bring in something new.
Professional organizers recommend starting your decluttering process with one drawer or shelf, and building from there.
20 News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || April 20, 2023
2 / Start small
Most experts agree: When you’re ready to begin organizing, start small. Target one drawer or category of items, such as shoes then build out from there. Once that first drawer evolves into tackling your whole wardrobe, mentally prepare for the process to take some time – days, even.
3 / Use luggage (and other clever spots)
In especially small closets, purging sometimes isn’t enough. To free up space, rotate items in and out seasonally. One trick is nesting smaller pieces of luggage and other items you won’t need for a while inside larger suitcases. The space beneath your bed is also valuable real estate. You can find inexpensive rolling bins specially designed to fit there at big box retailers.
Also, take stock of high-up shelves in your home and secondary closets (such as in a guest room, hallway or office) that may be underused. Those spots could be perfect for storing bulky, coldweather items in warm months.
4 / Hang up shoes
When kept on the floor, shoes can spread around a closet like a plague. One of the easiest solutions: Hang them up. Most types of shoes will fit in a hanging organizer. Easy to find and very affordable, they can fit behind most standardized closet doors.

Inexpensive Ways to Organize your Closet
Boots are trickier, but since they may be more seasonal, use the under-the-bed space, storing them in skinny bins.
5
/ Maximize closet rods
If you have lots of clothes and limited hanging space, invest in slim hangers that allow you to fit more onto rods. From there you can organize items
by color, button-down vs. not buttoned down and so forth.
6 / Treat drawers like filing cabinets
We all know this story: You sleep through your alarm and rip through your drawers in a desperate search for that one shirt. To avoid this scenario, every organizer spoken to for this article offered two words: file folding, which comes with multiple benefits – not only does it make each item of clothing easier to see, it allows you to fit more items into the drawer.
7
/ Corral handbags
Sort of like shoes, handbags tend to sprawl out in the absence of an organizing strategy. Try hanging them up with hangers designed to maintain the shape of leather handles. You can also take advantage of the nesting tactic and store smaller bags inside larger ones.

American Red Cross Good Samaritan Hero-
Denise Martinez
For the first time ever, the Lehigh Valley chapter of the American Red Cross will hold an event to honor the heroes who serve the community.
The Good Samaritan hero is Denise Martinez. She is the founder of Caring Hearts Clothing Closet and More on Route 873 near Slatington.
It's a place where everyone is welcome. Plenty to pick from on the shelves and no price tags. Just take what you need for free, no questions asked.
It's quite a departure from where you could find Denise six years ago, baking wedding cakes. The stress of the job took a toll though and she remembers going into cardiac arrest while driving home from work one day.
"When this happened, I was behind the wheel of my car. When I came to, I was along the side of the road with my foot on the brake pedal of my car," she said.
Her heart was at 252 beats a minute.
After heart surgery, Denise says she fell into a deep depression and found solace in a program called Transitions at Lehigh Valley Health Network. It's where she met Miss Tina.
"Her and I bonded instantly, the minute I met her. And every day she was taking a lot of food home that was left over from lunch, so I asked her one day, I said, where are you taking all of this food to everyday?" Martinez said. "And she said, I'm taking it to feed the homeless people, and I said, homeless people? Where are there homeless people around here? ...and she said “well I'm homeless."
At that moment, Denise's life changed.
She found her friend an apartment and she started The Warm and Cozy Project, hanging hats, gloves and scarves on a line for anyone who needed them. In 2016, she started Caring Hearts, a 501c3, where the door is always open.
"Anybody ever wants to come in and talk you know, come talk. Sometimes there's people that have nobody to talk to and I know how important that is," she said.
She knows how it can change your life. Being here has changed hers in so many ways. Giving back has a way of doing that.
Denise Martinez, American Red Cross Good Samaritan Hero. She and others will be honored at the first ever American Red Cross Lehigh Valley Heroes Breakfast.

Earth Day
Dear People:
If you have a calendar whereon are printed the various days during the year, then you know that April 22 is Earth Day. And to honor the day, we will read a few verses [from “Beautiful Nature”] by D. George Knecht:
Nature is something wonderful, It is now just as it was before; One cannot understand it all.
One looks so far towards the heavens, Such great things, who has done them? What keeps the earth going?
It is wonderful, yes, of course, How beautiful the earth is created; Flecked with land and mountain, Covered with trees and flowers.
Where such growth is, is power. What puts them there are seeds and moisture; So much growth of all kinds, And each blooms according to its kind.
The sprouts and roots draw the power From sun and earth—that's how it works. It is nature, in silent words, It is revealed in the flower.
O beautiful, great, green trees, Where such are I feel at home; A beautiful tree and beautiful flowers Are in my eyes wherever I go.
One sees how beautifully the sun comes up, And moon and stars in the night; So regularly, not distorted— They go so quietly, there is no sound.
A bird's nest, have you observed one yet? How beautifully they have made it! So well built, just take a look, Didn't learn it, but know how.
The owl flies in the quiet night, It flies so softly; it makes no sound;

That is the way, that is no dream— Its nest is in a hollow tree; Brings up its young ones there And sings so nicely its little song.
The rocks upon the mountains green, They stand so high, what put them there? It was nature of a bygone time That put them there once; there they are today.
Things change in time, Nothing stays as we see it today; Where now the tree stands, as beautiful as a flower,
Is something else when time goes by.
Take care,

Motorists are reminded there will be increased patrols as part of our continuing effort toward traffic safety throughout this summer season. When you see flashing lights, slow down and steer clear, it is the law.
Motorists are also reminded of the mandates of Title 75 Section 3733, Fleeing or Attempting to Elude Police Officer, which stipulates that any driver of a motor vehicle who willfully fails or refuses to bring their vehicle to a stop, or who otherwise flees or attempts to elude a pursuing police officer, commits an offense, graded up to a Felony of the 3rd Degree, which carries a maximum sentence of 7 years in prison, a $15,000 fine, and

Northampton native Serves aboard Navy Warship in Norfolk
Submitted by BRITTANY CROCKER
Seaman Noah Mercado, a native of Northampton, serves aboard a U.S. Navy warship operating out of Norfolk, Virginia.
Mercado joined the Navy two years ago. Today, Mercado serves as a personnel specialist aboard USS Forrest Sherman.
“I was in college during the pandemic and didn’t enjoy online classes,” said Mercado. “I felt like I was wasting my time and wanted to do something real, so I found a Navy recruiter.”
Growing up in Northampton, Mercado attended Northampton Area High School and graduated in 2018.
Skills and values similar to those found in Northampton led to success in the military.
“Playing lacrosse, I learned that even if you’re not set up for success, you can still set yourself up to succeed with hard work,” said Mercado.
These lessons have helped Mercado while serving aboard USS Forrest Sherman.

Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers provide a wide range of warfighting capabilities in multi-threat air, surface and subsurface environments.
A Navy destroyer is a multi-mission ship that can operate independently or as part of a larger group of ships at sea. The ship is equipped with tomahawk missiles, torpedoes, guns and a phalanx close-in weapons system.
More than 300 sailors serve aboard USS USS Forrest Sherman. Their jobs are highly specialized, requiring both dedication and skill. The jobs range from maintaining engines to handling weaponry

along with a multitude of other assignments that keep the ship mission-ready at all times, according to Navy officials.
As a member of the Navy, Mercado is part of a world-class organization focused on maintaining maritime dominance, strengthening partnerships, increasing competitive warfighting capabilities and sustaining combat-ready forces in support of the National Defense Strategy.
“We’re always deployed,” said Mercado. “We’re one of the only branches that is going out continuously to project power at sea.”
With 90 percent of global commerce traveling by sea and access to the internet relying on the security of undersea fiber optic cables, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to trained sailors and a strong Navy.
“Our mission remains timeless - to provide our fellow citizens with nothing less than the very best Navy: fully combat ready at all times, focused on warfighting excellence, and committed to superior leadership at every single level,” said Adm. Mike Gilday, Chief of Naval Operations. “This is our calling. And I cannot imagine a calling more worthy.”
Mercado and the sailors they serve will have many opportunities to achieve accomplishments during their military service.
“I’m proud of getting my master helmsman qualification,” said Mercado. “I drove the ship into port when we returned from our most recent deployment.”
As Mercado and other sailors continue to train and perform missions, they take pride in serving their country in the United States Navy.
SUNDAY, APRIL 30, 2023
“I like being a part of a long tradition of sailors,” added Mercado. “We take tradition seriously, and I’ve always enjoyed learning the history of the Navy. I’m proud to be a part of that lineage.”

Forest Service invests money to support schools, Roads, other services
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service today announced it is issuing more than $228 million to support public schools, roads and other municipal services through the agency’s Secure Rural Schools Program program. The program was reauthorized for fiscal years 2021 through 2023 by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Funds will be paid to 742 eligible counties in 41 states and Puerto Rico.
“The Secure Rural Schools program is one of many ways the Forest Service provides continuous support to communities across the country,” said Forest Service Chief Randy Moore. “Not only do these dollars provide funding for schools and roads, but the program also reimburses counties for providing emergency services on national forests and supports the development of community wildfire protection plans, all critical programs

The Forest Service retains some of the funding to support projects that improve forest conditions and support jobs in rural communities. Advisory Committees made up of residents representing varied interests and areas of expertise review and recommend the projects that meet their local needs.
In addition to Secure Rural Schools payments, the Forest Service is using Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act funding to improve forest conditions, support local economies and create jobs by investing in forest restoration projects, road and trail maintenance, recreation
opportunities and wood innovation development.
Over the past 10 years, the Forest Service has distributed $2.4 billion through the Secure Rural Schools Program program. This year’s payments to states are below.
In the years after the Forest Service was established in 1905, the national forest system tripled in size, growing from 56 million in 1905 to 172 million acres in 1908. To compensate counties for potential losses of tax revenue from this early growth, Congress ratified the Act of May 23, 1908. The Act allowed the Forest Service to distribute a

reauthorized Secure Rural Schools payments through fiscal year 2023.
Each state’s Secure Rural School payment amount is determined by various factors established in the law, including the number of counties that elect to share in a state's payment. Payments to states are distributed after the Forest Service collects revenue to accommodate those counties electing to continue participation in revenue sharing rather than the Secure Rural School payment.
The mission of the USDA Forest Service is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the nation’s forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations.
