First of all, we wish you a Happy Easter – the surest sign that the spring season has begun with its wealth of new beginnings. In this issue we are also going to continue our focus on different issues of health with a look at autism. We are also going to look at beauty, but not the “over-the-counter” variety.

As we continue looking at different health issues this year in an effort to gain a better understanding of them, we now turn our attention to autism. I’m sure most of us have heard of autism and many of us have probably experienced it within our circle of family and friends. But unless autism is

something we have experienced in a very close and personal way, how good is our real understanding of it?

In “What Is Autism?” we explore the basics of autism and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). According to the Centers for Disease Control, autism affects an estimated 1 in 36 children in the United States today and is characterized by a range of conditions. We gather some core information in our article, as well as parental concerns around the topic.

In our second article on autism, we look at something that is getting more focus now than it ever did before: aging with autism. Read “Aging with Autism: Caregiver Challenges” for insights into how people are aging with autism, and very specifically, the caregiver challenges that come with it. There really are some helpful tips in that article for caregivers who are family members or otherwise.

And then we also look at beauty. In our first article we don’t focus on external beauty – the makeup, the hairstyle, the outfit, we focus on inner

beauty and explain what that is and how to find it not only in others, but also in ourselves. See “Expressing Your Inner Beauty” to learn more. And lastly, we do turn to an element of external beauty in “Haircut and Hair Color Tips” where you will find expert tips and suggestions for how to get the most out of your next salon visit. So that’s it for this time around. Please be sure and join us next issue when we will focus completely on real estate and home improvement. See you then!

Easter Dessert: The Classic Pineapple Upside-Down Cake

The pineapple upside-down cake has always been a favorite and is currently having a major resurgence in popularity. It has been enjoyed by several generations in many families, so we thought it was quite worthy of highlighting as a dessert option for this year’s Easter dinner.

The recipe here is for a truly classic pineapple upside-down cake. It is delicious with the traditional pineapple, but don’t let that fence you in! You might enjoy it just as much with peaches or a combination of cranberries and orange. However you proceed, enjoy this upside-down cake fully and have a wonderful Easter dinner.

Expressing Your Inner Beauty

They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but how do we measure beauty? Outer beauty is often the first thing we notice about a person. It’s been said that outer beauty turns the head, but it is inner beauty that turns the heart.

Inner beauty is found in the qualities people come to love and respect in a person; qualities that can’t always be judged in a split second. You find inner beauty in how a person behaves towards others and that often takes time to be fully seen and appreciated.

Finding Your Own Inner Beauty

Unlike our physical appearance, which is something we have limited control over, our inner beauty can be worked on throughout our lives. Qualities that make us beautiful inside, like our love, compassion, generosity, and wisdom, are all things we constantly have a relationship with and can keep working on to improve.

As poet Maya Angelou once said, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”

Our own inner beauty shows itself in how we treat ourselves and those around us. It goes far beyond our physical appearance. Instead, we display our inner beauty by demonstrating qualities such as kindness, compassion, love, and honesty. With positive energy, our inner beauty will radiate through our smiles, body language, or how we interact with others.

Inner Beauty Lasts a Lifetime

Although we’re often superficially drawn to outer beauty, inner beauty is a gift that only grows over time. Finding your own inner beauty is an essential part of self-discovery and a way to practice kindness and compassion for those around you. Here are five important qualities of inner beauty to find within yourself and share with those in your life.

1. Kindness / Kindness is not just about how we treat others but also how we treat ourselves. Our inner monologue can often be very self-critical, making it challenging to frame ourselves in a good light. Practicing self-kindness will not only make you feel happier in yourself but will also allow you to display kindness to others.

2. Integrity / Having integrity means having strong moral principles. Moral integrity is shown by doing the right thing when no one is watching. Beauty can be easily identified in someone with solid morals principles, and their influence can inspire and transform the lives of others.

3. Wisdom / Wisdom is almost the total opposite of outer beauty in that it’s not something we’re born with or gifted. Wisdom is built entirely from living, making mistakes, and using that learning to make good judgments. Wisdom empowers us to draw on past experiences and use them positively.

4. Loyalty / Loyalty is arguably the most important quality you have to create strong relationships with your partner, family, friends, and colleagues. There is no one type of autism, but many. Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication.

We know that there are many subtypes of autism, most influenced by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Because autism is a spectrum disorder, each person with autism has a distinct set of strengths and challenges.

Range of Learning Skills

The ways in which people with autism learn, think and problem-solve can range from highly skilled to severely challenged. Some people with ASD may require significant support in their daily lives, while others may need less support and, in some cases, live entirely independently.

Several factors may influence the development of autism, and it is often accompanied by sensory sensitivities and medical issues. These issues can include gastrointestinal (GI) disorders, seizures or sleep disorders. They can also include mental

health challenges such as anxiety, depression and attention issues.

Long-term Language Study

Recent findings suggest that early intensive behavioral intervention (EIBI) programs are a promising solution for improving language outcomes in children with autism. Children with autism often exhibit challenges in speech and social skills that can make learning and communication with others difficult.

Children receiving EIBI have shown substantial increases in language relative to those without the intervention. The research also found that the

Aging with Autism: Caregiver Challenges

There is no existing “list” of challenges for the aging process in individuals on the autism spectrum and what we mean is aging individuals who are 50 and 60+. The impact of aging can be much more challenging for those individuals due to less mental and physical flexibility, more sensory issues, and decreasing social skills.

If you are a parent or caregiver for someone aging with ASD, there are ways to prepare for the changes ahead. To start:

• Always appreciate the gifts and skills of the older person with ASD. Many have a lifetime of experiences, talents, and expertise that can be shared with others, which will give them a sense of being needed.

• Prepare for their eventual loss of skills. Finding a caring gerontologist to be part of their care team can enhance the senior’s understanding of the situation.

• Preparing for their eventual loss of health is

not always possible. It may be better to just focus on maintaining a balanced diet, regular exercise, attending to any medical needs, and seeking counseling and group support when necessary.

As the caregiver, here are some things to keep in mind:

• Allow more time for the person's speech processing, both expressive (speaking) and receptive (hearing and interpreting).

• Keep in mind that their misbehavior is seldom intentional.

• Be sure to stay upbeat in your discussions and dealings with the senior you are helping.

Creating a To-Do List

A great proactive plan is to make a morning schedule or "to-do list" for the ASD senior. No one wants to be forced to do things they don't like. Therefore, your positive and creative skills will be essential in working with them to develop a daily list and then add in items for appointments or special events. A good place to begin is with breakfast. Choose something they like to do or eat in the morning and make that a part of the checklist.

Prepare a "training list" to share with auxiliary helpers. Likes and dislikes, daily routines, and

For routines, include exercise, diet, and social routines. Again, be specific as to what they like and dislike in each area. Health issues to be covered can include medications, as well as allergies,

successful methods for persuading them to take their meds, and an emergency medical call list. Also include successful ways to calm and soothe the individual.

Hospital Psychosis

Hospital Psychosis occurs when someone enters a structured living situation such as a hospital or skilled care facility. They may suddenly become disoriented and paranoid, often blaming their primary caretaker or care staff for their confinement, and distrusting the people upon whom they rely for care.

Escape often becomes their top priority. If the senior with ASD is showing signs of this behavior, be sure that his or her caregiver team consults psychiatric care in case antipsychotic drugs may be needed. In some elders, this confusion may become a daily occurrence and may occur most often in the late afternoon or early evening.

Finally, remaining a healthy caregiver is key in making the aging experience optimal. Whether you are a paid or volunteer non-family member, or someone who is related by genetics or love, you will need knowledge and encouragement as you take this important journey into the new frontier of aging.

Giant donates nearly 3,900 hams, turkeys and chickens this spring to help eliminate hunger

As part of its ongoing commitment to help eliminate hunger in the communities it serves, the GIANT Company has announced a donation of 3,873 hams, turkeys and chickens to 15 partner food banks. Team members from the GIANT Company will also volunteer at several food banks over the next few weeks to organize and restock pantry shelves for the spring season.

“Everyone deserves a full plate and the chance to gather around the table to enjoy a nutritious meal with their family,” said Jessica Groves, community impact manager, the GIANT Company. “With too many facing food insecurity and food banks continuing to see an increase in demand, this donation will deliver nearly 30,000 pounds of protein to families in need throughout our local communities this spring. Mobile Mammograms Returning to KU April 13; Register Today

The Lehigh Valley Topper Cancer Institute will bring its mobile mammography coach to Kutztown University Thursday, April 13. Screenings will take place 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Student Recreation Center parking lot. The screening service will be offered to women over 40 years old who have not had a mammogram in the past year. The event is open to the entire community.

Post-traditional and graduate students as well as staff, faculty and community members can benefit from this opportunity. No prescription is needed for women over the age of 40 who have not had a mammogram in the past year. There are also grant funding opportunities for those over 40 without insurance; those interested should contact the Lehigh Valley Health Network for more information.

LCCC Tamaqua Expands Services for Students with Food Insecurity

The Tamaqua site of Lehigh Carbon Community College has received a grant from the Pennsylvania Hunger Free Campus to expand services for students experiencing food insecurity. The Cougar Cabinet, in partnership with Helping Harvest, will open March 20 and will offer prepackaged pantry boxes and a selection of grocery staples. The site is also working with St. Luke’s Health Care Network for lunch and learn programs and distributing earth boxes to expand access to healthy foods and increasing personal care items.

All members of the LCCC community are welcome to visit the cabinet once a week. Hours are subject to change each semester due to staff availability.

Nazareth native continues 50 year tradition of women in naval aviation

March marked the observance of Women in Aviation Month, which highlights the contributions of women in the history of flight. This year commemorated 50 years of women flying in the U.S. Navy.

Lt. j.g. Julia McFarland, a native of Nazareth, Pennsylvania, is training to be a U.S. Naval Aviator, carrying the torch for the next generation of women aviators.

McFarland is currently a student Weapons Systems Officer (WSO) serving with Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 106 located aboard Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia.

VFA 106, also known as the "Gladiators," fly the single seat and two seat variants of the Navy’s strike fighter aircraft the F/A-18E and the F/A18F Super Hornet.

McFarland did not have other family members in the military nor did she yearn to become a pilot growing up. However, in a turn of fate, she received a brochure in the mail for the Naval Academy’s summer seminar.

"I convinced myself to apply, but I did not know that it was a college until I was at the camp listening to people talk about it being their first choice for school," said McFarland. "I left the camp interested in going to school there without fully understanding the impact it would have on my future. I believe going through this process on my own terms has been beneficial as it has allowed me to enter each new stage with little expectations from myself as well as little expectations from others. My family is supportive and loves to hear about the adventures naval aviation has already taken me on."

After graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy, McFarland was selected to join the training pipeline to be a naval flight officer.

McFarland began her journey as a student at Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola, Florida, learning to be a weapons systems officer directly involved in all air operations and weapons systems for naval aircraft.

"We train with the pilots then break off and do primary and advanced flight training on our own," said McFarland. “As students, we are expected to brief our instructors on how we will execute each simulation or flight. It was a difficult test in confidence and attention to detail, but it definitely forced us to learn the material."

After NAS Pensacola, McFarland transferred to the Strike Fighter community which flies the F/A-18 Super Hornet.

"I fell in love with aviation very early on," said McFarland. "I was totally shocked by how difficult the learning curve was for learning how to fly. Once I crossed over, I felt like I had unlocked this new world. I would come back

from flights so excited to try again and get better the next time. I knew that joining the Strike Fighter community would mean that feeling would never go away. It’s fun to slowly start putting the pieces together on how to fly this jet effectively.”

In 1973, the first eight women began flight school in Pensacola; one year later six of them, known as "The First Six," earned their “Wings of Gold.” Over the past 50 years, the Navy has expanded its roles for women to lead and serve globally and today our women aviators project power from the sea in every type of Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard aircraft. Our Nation and our Navy is stronger because of their service.

As women continue to grow in strength in the aviation community, history was made prior to kick off on Super Bowl Sunday as the military flyover commemorated 50 years of women in Naval Aviation. For the first time ever, the military aircraft flying over the game were all operated by women.

TANK’s owner passed away & he found himself here at the shelter. He was having a hard time adjusting to the kennel so when volunteer, Peggy, called to say she was available, Tom had the perfect job. Peggy spent a couple hours sitting on the floor with TANK & taking him on several walks. At the end of the day, TANK was much more comfortable in his kennel. TANK goes to the vet on Monday & then will be ready for a new home. We think he is about 8 years old & it’s reported he lived in a home with cats. He is super sweet & loves to give kisses! Diesel is a pointer/pittie mix. He’s about 2 years old and still has that young dog energy and the best smile! He would love to go to a training class because he is such a smart pup and already knows some basic commands.

He’s completely different once out of his kennel and able to just relax and not be a shelter dog for a day or two.

Just like most dogs he enjoys laying and snoring on a comfy couch and he will have no problem hogging the bed too.

It’s Finally Spring! The LTHS annual Basket Social will be held on Sunday, April 16th. Please see the ad in this issue of the Gazette. We have some great baskets, lots of gift cards and handmade items, such as afghans, along with tickets/ vouchers for a LV Iron Pigs game, Dorney Park & Wildwater Kingdom and the Crayola Experience in Easton. Tickets are sold at the door. The Fish & Game club members will have their kitchen open with lunch and beverages for sale. 12th Annual “Keep Slatington Beautiful” Town Cleanup Scheduled

Volunteers are needed for Slatington’s annual cleanup day! The Slatington Parks & Recreation Commission will sponsor the 11th Annual Keep Slatington Beautiful Clean-Up Day on Saturday, April 22 beginning at 9 am. The cleanup held in conjunction with Earth Day will help beautify public recreation areas throughout the Borough of Slatington. Areas to be cleaned will be boroughowned and operated recreation facilities in the borough and include the Walnut Street Playground, West End Playground, Victory Park, The Fish Pond, Slatington Memorial Park, Slatington Trailhead, and the Slate Heritage Trail from the Slatington Trailhead continuing westward to the Washington Township boundary line. The commission is looking for local Boy Scout & Girl Scout Troops, area civic organizations, and the general public to assist in the cleanup. Shankweiler’s Drive-In Theatre,

oldest operating drive-in movie theater, will celebrate its 89th birthday on April 15, 2023

Matthew McClanahan and Lauren McChesney, owners of Shankweiler’s Drive-In Theatre, have announced the historic theater’s 89th anniversary will be celebrated on April 15, 2023 with a ribboncutting ceremony and birthday party preceding the night’s movies.

Shankweiler’s Drive-In Theatre was the second drive-in theater ever built, first opening on April 15, 1934, and holds the Guinness World Record as the oldest operating drive-in theater in the world.

McClanahan and McChesney recently purchased Shankweiler’s in November 2022, becoming the theater’s fourth set of owners, and kept it open and operating throughout the winter. The celebration on April 15 will also mark the beginning of the spring/summer 2023 movie season – the first for the new owners.

“Eighty-nine might not seem like a milestone,” adds McChesney, “but when you’re the oldest, every year is a milestone.”

Alyssa Asdourian, a PharmD candidate from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy/St. Joseph’s University will present “Breaking the habit:” a program on smoking cessation at the Slatington Public Library on Wednesday, April 19th at 1:00. All are welcome.

Preschool story hour is on Tuesdays from 11:00am to noon and will run through April 25th. There will be stories, crafts and treats. Everyone is welcome, no registration is necessary.

The Book Club will meet on May 1st in person at the library and via zoom. They will be discussing the second half of “The Lincoln Highway” by Amor Towles. Book club meets at 1:00pm the first Monday of the month. If you are interested in joining the book club, please contact the library. Copies of the current book are available.

A Genealogy group meets at the library on the second Saturday of the month at 11:00am. They will next meet on March 11th. Any one interested in genealogy is welcome to join them.

Now, here is something that our city council hasn't thought about: Rube Reinsmith always has a lot of roosters, some old and some not so old. Now, a rooster that was a chick before the Great War [WWI] broke out is like a wood-carver’s bench: it has its own head [mind]. You can't teach Rube's old roosters any new tricks. They crow with [according to] the sun – and don't know anything about [clock] main springs and pendulums. Roosters would have to get [draw up] a new timetable [schedule] with daylight savings [in effect] just like the railroads, the trolley car companies and the Pennsburg bus line. Rube is planning to put up a wireless [radio] station this summer in his area – just to wake up folks in the morning when the roosters crow. But if the city council is not able to teach the roosters to crow an hour earlier, then I wouldn't give [a wad of old] chewing tobacco for the whole darned daylight savings bill. Now, "the short and the long" of this darned daylight savings bill is this: The dudes in the city don't give a darn about the folks [living out] on the farms. They just want to finish [work]

It is also interesting that one of the groups advocating for daylight savings on the national level was the Chamber of Commerce, since families would have another hour of daylight in the evening to go out in their automobiles and hopefully spend more time and money in their communities.]
