Here I sit and am considering what I should write to styart off the New Year. I think at first I wll be speaking of those words which we had in this column recently. It appears that there were more people interested in those words then I had expected. Here is the [meaning in] English such as we understood and heard our elders speak them and we also looked them up in Horne’s Pennsylvania German Manual for Pronouncing, Speaking, and Writing English.
1. Rock candy. (This we can still buy in some stores. Some people have made a very strong years ago by putting this candy in rye [whiskey]. [Rock and Rye – so I’ve seen told!]
3. Game animal. (Dad often went to shoot game animals; such as rabitts pheasants, and squirrels.)
4. Talents. (One should use the talents that God gave him.)
5. Tonsils.
6. Interpreter.

7. Difficult to please, obstinate. (When someone is very particular how something is done, then one can say, “Don’t be so difficult to please!) [Of course, we all know someone like that and we also know that we, ourselves, are not absenaat, gelle?]
8. Surplus or overbundance.
9. To give a quick, sharp reply; to sass off. (That makes me angry, when someone gives me a sharp response.)
10. To urge vigorously; to approach for something. (He tormented me for money.)
Well, there are those words, but I still know what you also would like to know. From all the letters that we got, we sought out the earliest send letter with the most words that were correct. Then we enclosed a little Christmas present to send to that writer and he is Elmer W … who lives next to Green Pond, Easton R. D. 3.
We are sorry that we did not ship something to all those who send us letters but that is not possible. I hope that you all write again before long. Tell me what you would like to read. A big ‘Thank you!’ to each and every one of you.
We were also very glad to again hear from our readers from Philadelphia and California over the Christmas season. [It has been some time since I featured a selection from Florence Baver, my first choice among Dutch writers when I started contrubuting these articles. In this one she uses a lot of English loan words, most of which I respelled using Buffington/Barba rules. Enjoy!]
