Loving Our Pets
By John Hall for Blue Mountain Town & Country Gazette
When all is said and done, my favorite pet was Henry. Shortly before adopting Henry (I’ve adopted six dogs during my life so far), I had adopted Clyde, Bentley and Yum-Yum. Yum-Yum was a shepherd-terrier mix, but Clyde and Bentley were retired greyhound racers. Actually, Clyde hadn’t gotten the hang of it, so his “retirement” came extremely early. He wasn’t the brightest, but he sure was pretty.
My first adopted greyhound was a majestic fellow named Ricky, a gentle, regal, cream-colored greyhound with large fawn-colored spots. Ricky was a favorite with the 3-year-olds in the neighborhood when he was out for a walk. He towered over them and would always finish their visits by giving each a big kiss. I always said he was my “Greyhound Ambassador” – as much for me as the kids.

Traveling with Your Pup: What to Know
SOURCE: traveler.marriott.com
If you and your dog are going to hit the road for vacation, with careful planning, the pet travel experience can be enjoyable for both of you. Here are some good tips for taking your wily defender of squirrel invasions on the road with you.
Let’s Go! (To the Vet)
Getting your pet ready to travel can be overwhelming, especially for first-timers. A veterinarian will be your best resource for credible information tailored to your dog’s specific needs. To start, the vet can advise you whether or not the planned trip is a good idea for your specific pet.
Here are some questions to ask: Is a microchip necessary? Are there vaccine requirements and special paperwork requirements, even if I’m planning to only travel domestically?
Also keep in mind your dog will likely need to travel in a carrier, or for long car trips, with a special restraint. This is for both safety and health reasons.
Pack Your Bags (and Fido’s)
Packing wisely is smart prep for enjoying a great
adventure. Your furry companion is going to need you to pack a travel bag or “kit” also. Start assembling the fundamentals for your dog’s kit as soon as possible. Things to include:
• Medications and first-aid supplies
• Leash, restraints, collar
• Official paperwork (e.g., vaccine certifications, medical information)
• Veterinarian clinic and emergency contacts, including your local vet and, when possible, contacts for the places on your itinerary
• Appropriate carrier
• Food
• Water (if possible, some that your pet is used to drinking – perhaps pack 2-3 gallons of water from your home faucet)
The Places We’ll Go
Before getting “married” to a particular trip, make sure your pet will be welcome everywhere, including any stops you might be planning on the way to your final destination. If you plan to fly, be aware that the U.S. Department of Transportation

now limits service animals in the airplane cabin to trained dogs only.
Animals without service dog documentation must either travel in a pet carrier that fits under the seat, or in the cargo hold. Also be aware that many airlines have now adjusted their policies to no longer accept animals in the cargo hold at all, so be sure to check before planning travel.
You also have to take precautions for a road trip when crossing state lines within the United States. According to the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, paperwork requirements for animals vary between states.
And finally, the CDC warns that some U.S. carriers don’t allow any pets to be shipped in the cargo hold between May and September, the hottest months for animals to travel in the Northern Hemisphere.

Dear Lehigh Township Residents,
We are a fourth generational family farm in Lehigh Township. For many years we have poured our hearts into our farm raising crops to continue to feed America. We would like to continue our farming operation for years to come and future generations as well as obtain more farmland in the future. However, with this current economy and government overreach it continues to get harder to provide in this manner. We were blessed with an opportunity to look into leasing a portion of the land we owned for principle solar use to help generate electricity for the needs of America AND PROVIDE US A SUPPLEMENTAL INCOME TO MAKE THE FARMS MORE VIABLE, ESPECIALLY DURING TIMES OUR CROPS ARE COMPROMISED DUE TO TOO MUCH OR TOO LITTLE RAIN. Unfortunately the members of the planning commission of Lehigh Township are selfishly trying to disrupt any principle solar use in the township except on industrial land which would take away any chance for small farmers to use this as a tool to provide for their family and help their farm operations grow. The planning commission members have been acting on emotions and feelings with no facts to back up their unconstitutional decision.
As they
in a disrespectful and mocking manner to the farmers who presented these facts. They made it clear they are not willing to work with the farmers but are only after their political propaganda. This is not about whether anyone agrees with having principle solar farms or not, this is about the right of landowners to use their land in the manner they see fit. It needs to be remembered that all of the houses in the township were either once farmland or forest land at some point. In order to truly support the farmers we need the community to let this be our choice. One can not say they truly support the farmers if they are trying to dictate what we do on our own land. The township once again is showing corruption instead of hearing the voices of the farmers. We are asking the community in the next few months to please come out to the meetings that have principle solar use on the agenda to truly support the farmers and our voice.

Calming Your Pet during a Thunderstorm
SOURCE: Various
We are having particularly unsettled weather to start this summer and that includes many thunderstorms. The stormy weather can be especially upsetting for our four-legged family members. For our pets, it’s the noise of the storm that seems to frighten them the most.
If your dog or cat becomes scared at the sound of the unexpected big “booms” of a thunderstorm, they are not alone. Thunderstorm anxiety affects many pets, especially dogs, and can often increase as they age. With symptoms ranging from barking and yowling to chewing and self-injury, it can be a serious problem for both pet and owner.
Not only is the loud noise of thunder scary, our pets can hear it at a much greater distance than we can. Also, the smell of the air and the air pressure change before the storm arrives and our animals are much more sensitive to those changes as well.
In addition to the various products available to help calm our pets, here are five tips you can use
in advance of, and during the next thunderstorm to calm them as well.
Five Pet-calming Tips
1. Stay calm. Adopt a neutral, matter-of-fact attitude. Your pet, especially a dog, can quickly pick up on any unease or fear on your part.
2. Don't comfort your pet when it acts afraid. Giving your pet hugs or special attention can actually reinforce fearful behavior. Speak to your pet in a happy, playful voice to give confidence and don’t punish your pet for fearful behavior. If you can get your pet to play with you during a storm, that is a great way to go.
3. Provide your pet with a safe indoor place during storms. With a dog it can be your dog’s crate, a bathroom or closet – anyplace where your pet feels comfortable. Many dogs have been lost when they ran from their fenced yards in terror during storms. If you have a designated safe indoor space for your dog, be sure to leave the door open to the space so it doesn't feel trapped.
4. Play thunderstorm sounds for your pet. You

can easily find thunderstorm sounds on YouTube. Start a “thunderstorm conditioning program" by first playing the sounds on extremely low volume while you go about your day-to-day activities. If your pet acts afraid again, remember to not pamper the fearful behavior. Instead, redirect your pet to a pleasant activity. Over a period of time, gradually increase the volume until your pet can handle a more realistic sounding storm. This process may take several days to a few weeks.
5. Ask your vet for help. If your cat or dog is extremely agitated during thunderstorms, you may want to consider medication or a natural remedy for pets. Your veterinarian should be able to help you do this if they think it’s an appropriate solution.
Above all, be kind and patient with your pet throughout the thunderstorm. By remaining calm and setting a good example, you will help your pet be more at ease.

Mama Girl
Mama Girl is a 7-year-old, Pitbull mix, our longest resident here at the shelter. We found Mama Girl tied to a pole in East Stroudsburg, PA. The local shelter did not have room for her. Mama is housebroken, loves to play with her stuffed animals, enjoys walks, and likes to check out all the wildlife (she thinks is a hound). Occasionally, she likes to get in the water. Good with people, however, would be better in a home with no other pets. She is super loving and sweet.

Freya here, looking for a second shot at forever! Freya was adopted out from PK as a puppy, but was recently returned. Freya is a 1-year-old, female shepherd mix. She weighs 53 lbs. Freya struggles with nervousness, especially around loud noises, and needs a patient family that will give her time to gain confidence. She would benefit from structure and training to help her feel safe and comfortable. Once she is comfortable, she is extremely sweet and affectionate. She just want to please! She is crate-trained and house-trained, and knows a few basic commands. She gets along with cats and big dogs but cannot live with small dogs. Freya has not spent time around children, but we think she would be okay in a calm home with older children who respect her boundaries and fears. We truly believe that once Freya fonds a home that can provide the necessary patience and structure that she’ll flourish and be a wonderful dog! Apply for Freya at lvpeaceablekingdom.info.
Gabby is 9 yrs old. She is very sweet and loves to get hugs and kisses. She does tolerate other cats but would prefer to be your only cat. Could you be the family Gabby is waiting for? We are unsure if she would get along with a dog so we would recommend no dogs just to play it safe. Anyone interested can contact Carbon county friends of Animals at 570-325-9400 or they can contact us on our Facebook page or our website. Thank you.

Furry Feet Rescue: Saving Animals
By John Hall for Blue Mountain Town & Country Gazette
For this issue about pets, I had the pleasure of chatting with Michelle Geyer, owner of Furry Feet Rescue that is located on Cottonwood Road in Walnutport (www. furryfeetrescue.com).
Like most localized animal rescue organizations, Furry Feet is a small non-profit.
The mission of Furry Feet is to rescue stray and unwanted small animals and find them good, permanent homes via adoption. The organization also provides education to the public on animal care issues including dietary needs, shots and emotional care for animals that have been abused or abandoned. Furry Feet also offers low-cost neutering and basic veterinary needs.
A Day in the Life
Not every cat or dog that comes into the care of Furry Feet is a cute young kitten or puppy. Furry Feet very specifically takes in older animals as well, some of whom arrive with bad dental problems, as well as skin and fur issues. Geyer notes, “We treat every dog that tests positive for heartworm at no extra expense to the adopter.”
When I reached out to Geyer, I wanted to get a sense of the “day in the life” of an animal rescue organization.
I quickly realized that at Furry Feet Rescue, the “day in the life” is completely about the process of taking in unwanted or abandoned animals and preparing them for adoption so they can be successfully placed in their new forever homes.
According to Geyer, “The adopting party just doesn’t see the horror many of these animals come from, the terrible living conditions they are rescued from and the horrible shape they are in when they come to us from puppy mills.”
Adopting instead of Buying
Furry Feet gets most of its puppies from kill shelters because there is no rhyme or reason in terms of which animals will be the next to be euthanized. It often comes down to the kill shelter just being out of room. Once the animals arrive at Furry Feet a lot of money and time is spent to make the animals adoptable –time and money the public doesn’t see.
Geyer’s most senior dog at the time of our phone conversation was 15 years old. She said if she has the space, she’ll take them in.
Like most people running rescue organizations, Geyer feels very strongly that people should adopt rather than buy puppies at commercial / retail outlets. According to Geyer, the more people buy puppies, the more it enables the breeders to keep doing it only for profit.
Adoption Fees
Geyer and I spent some time talking about adoption fees. She said many times people are surprised by the adoption fees and feel the fees are high. But she said people don’t realize how much money the rescue organization puts into the animals to help them get everything they need to be healthy and ready for adoption.
Because Furry Feet Rescue has a veterinarian on staff, they are able to prepare the animals for adoption at breakeven on costs as it relates to adoption fees, but it’s an expensive proposition. The dental work on an animal can be very expensive, plus they have to be spayed/neutered, microchipped and receive all their shots before they can move to their new home.
If you would like to find out more about Furry Feet Rescue or to adopt one of their animals, visit them at furryfeetrescue.com, or call 610-767-7096.

Nyx here! My name also has two meanings. I am both the moon of Pluto (Nix), and named after the greek goddess of darkness and night. I certainly look like a goddess if I do say so myself. I was also a spitfire when I first got to my foster mom's house. After a day I realized how much I love to be held and pet. I love to wrestle my littermates and am a typical silly kitten! I am almost 8 weeks old, and if you saw my mom, you'll understand why they called me "mini me". I look just like her. I am a stunning calico girl with all these neat spots that are hard to capture in pictures! I am also looking for my forever home before foster mom gets too attached! Bellatrix is my buddy, and if you wanted to double your fun, you could get us both! But we would be ok going to different homes, as long as we have someone to play with. Are you looking for a new kitten or two? Ask for an application email TTARESCUE15@GMAIL.COM

Weil sie all des geduh hen, un weeich ihrer Lewesweis aa, misse mir schtolz sei.
Awwer waardt en Minutt; mir schtolze Deitsche wuhne net leenich do.
Nau kenne selli Kinner schtolz zweemol sei.

farms out of the wilderness and took good care of the buildings thereon. And over the years they forged their own culture and folk life. They were hardworking, honest, Christian people. Yes, we know that there are always scoundrels among any group. The Dutch people did much, however, to build this great country and, let us not forget, to first make it free and later to keep it free. Because they accomplished all this and because of their manner of life, we must be proud.
But wait a minute; we proud Dutch do not live alone here. In our land, The United States, there are many other peoples or ethnic groups that came in here from all over the world and even Peoples of Color from Africa, who were brought in against their will in chains. And do not forget the Native Americans who for thousands of years lived here and then lost their land when we needed more. All of these different groups had their own religions, customs and order or manner of doing things, which were very important to them. For their culture and all that they gave to keep this country going, these peoples also can be proud.
Today many a person can be proud, not just of one ethnic group but of two or more. In America in this “Melting Pot” which one often calls it in English, we commonly find that someone marries another person from a different ethnic group. Then their children can be twice proud, but only if the parents teach them information about both ethnicities. Years ago, my doctor told me the story how he and his wife taught their children the culture and religion of both their families. It goes thus:
The doctor’s family was from the Ukraine and he had a grandfather who was a priest. (I must inform you that their priests [Ukrainian Greek

Catholic Church] can be married.) And his wife was Dutch and her father could speak and read the Dialect. When they had children, they decided that it was important that the children learn the religion and culture from both ethnic groups. So right from the start they went to church on Sundays. But one Sunday they went to his Catholic Church and the next to his wife’s Lutheran Church. And when the Ukraine community or the Dutch
had something like a holiday [special event], they took the children to it.
Now those children can be proud two times over.
When children and grownups also know a little of their forefather’s folkways, beliefs and history, then they will appreciate their ancestors more. And this is it, what is most important here. So, everyone can be proud of those who went before them, just as they are also proud of the way the Almighty God made them.

Keep pets safe in the heat How to keep animals cool when temperatures soar
Watch the humidity
"It's important to remember that it's not just the ambient temperature, but also the humidity that can affect your pet," says Dr. Barry Kellogg, VMD, of the Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association. "Animals pant to evaporate moisture from their lungs, which takes heat away from their body. If the humidity is too high, they are unable to cool themselves and their temperature will skyrocket to dangerous levels—very quickly."
Taking a dog's temperature will quickly tell you if there is a serious problem. Dogs' temperatures should not reach over 104 degrees. If your dog's temperature does, follow the instructions below for treating heat stroke.
Limit exercise on hot days
Take care when exercising your pet. Adjust intensity and duration of exercise in accordance with the temperature. On very hot days, limit exercise to early morning or evening hours, and be especially careful with pets with white-colored ears, who are more susceptible to skin cancer, and short-nosed pets, who typically have difficulty
breathing. Asphalt gets very hot and can burn your pet's paws, so walk your dog on the grass if possible. Always carry water with you to keep your dog from dehydrating.
Don't rely on a fan
Pets respond differently to heat than humans do. (Dogs, for instance, sweat primarily through their feet.) And fans don't cool off pets as effectively as they do people.
Provide ample shade and water
Any time your pet is outside, make sure they have protection from heat and sun and plenty of fresh, cold water. In heat waves, add ice to water when possible. Tree shade and tarps are ideal because they don't obstruct air flow. A doghouse does not provide relief from heat—in fact, it makes it worse.
Cool your pet inside and out
Whip up a batch of quick and easy DIY pupsicles for dogs. And always provide water, whether your pets are inside or out with you.
Keep your pet from overheating indoors or out with a cooling body wrap, vest or mat. Soak these products in cool water, and they'll stay cool (but usually dry) for up to three days. If your dog doesn't find baths stressful, see if they enjoy a cooling soak.

The Welsh have come back to Slatington
Submitted by Timothy Snyder
Our local Welsh history occurred between between 1840 and 1900 when several hundred men, women, and children immigrated to Slatington from Wales to work in the local slate industries- quarries, factories, and associated businesses. They raised their families here. Their total numbers grew into the thousands. They worshipped, educated, and socialized here until the middle of the twentieth century when the
demand for slate products decreased dramatically. We still have some of their descendants with us. Surnames like Williams, Roberts, Jones, Evans, Parry, Hughes, Davis- Davies, Griffith(s), Thomas, Edwards, Rowlands, Morris, Owens, and Pugh are still present.
In June 2023, Judy Snyder, president of the Slatington History Preservation Committee, responded to a request from the Catasauqua Historical Society asking for places for two Welsh historians to visit. She of course suggested that they visit the Slatington area because of our rich Welsh history. As a result, on Monday, July 3, 2023, two historians from Wales, John Jones and Stephen Todd visited Slatington.
The Slatington History Preservation Committee sponsored their visit. In addition to Judy Snyder, the following individuals participated in their welcome.
Bryon Reed, is the great great grandson of Owen Jones who along with William Roberts were the first people to discover slate in the Slatington area. Bryon, along with Tim Snyder, accompanied the visitors to the Fairview Cemetery, with mostly

Candyce Mantz Merkle, of Evans ancestry, discussed her prior visit to Wales with the visitors.
Anna Milot, organist of the United Presbyterian Church, explained the local history of the celebration of the Welsh Hymn Singing Festival, “Gymanfa Ganu” and church documents, photos, and history.
Linda Nierer, of Edwards ancestry and a member of the Bethel UCC Church , shared that this Welsh church congregation was the first church in Slatington .
Jeralyn Schoch, mayor of Slatington, shared common community interests with the visitors.
Judy said that the SHPC and the sponsors individually plan to continue communicating with John and Stephen and maybe a reciprocal visit will take place.

Homemade Peanut Butter Dog Treats Recipe
Homemade Dog Treats are the best way to show your pet that you love them like family! These Homemade Peanut Butter Dog Treats are an easy dog biscuit recipe that your fur baby would request every week if they could.
EQUIPMENT
Kitchen Scale (optional)
Baking Sheet
Rolling Pin
Piping Tip Set
INGREDIENTS FOR THE DOG TREATS
2½ cups whole wheat flour 300 grams (see note)
1 large egg 50 grams
1 cup peanut butter 270 grams (see note)
1 cup water 227 grams
2 tablespoons honey 43 grams (see note) FOR THE FROSTING
2 tablespoons peanut butter 34 grams
1 tablespoon honey 21 grams
⅓ cup cornstarch 37 grams (can also use potato starch or arrowroot powder)
3-4 tablespoons hot water 43-57 grams
INSTRUCTIONS
Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.
In a large bowl, combine flour and the egg. Add the peanut butter, water, and honey, and stir until you have a stiff dough. The dough becomes very firm and sticky. You may need to use your hands, or the paddle attachment on your mixer.
2½ cups whole wheat flour,1 large egg,1 cup peanut butter,1 cup water,2 tablespoons honey
On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough about ½-inch thick and use a cookie cutter to make fun shapes. The treats barely spread and rise, so get creative with your shapes.
Bake for 18-20 minutes, until golden. Once done, set aside to cool. (If you have smaller cookies, use less time, otherwise the bottom might burn.)
To make the frosting, combine the peanut butter and honey in a microwavable bowl, and heat in the microwave in 15 second increments, stirring in between, until melted.
2 tablespoons peanut butter,1 tablespoon honey
Add the melted peanut butter mixture to the cornstarch and stir until just combined.
⅓ cup cornstarch
Slowly add in the water 1 tablespoon at a time until you have reached the consistency that you would like. For a thinner frosting, add more water.
3-4 tablespoons hot water
Add the frosting to a piping bag and pipe designs on top of each dog treat.
Frost the treats with the peanut butter/honey mixture for an even more tempting cookie.
NOTES
Flour: Some dogs are allergic to flour/wheat. If you want to make these wheat free, you can use rice flour of coconut flour as a replacement. These alternate flours will work, but might change the consistency a bit. Thanks so much to the readers who wrote it about this!
Peanut Butter: Some peanut butter brands are including xylitol to cut the sugar in their peanut butter. Do not use any peanut butter containing xylitol as it is toxic to dogs. Just check for natural peanut butter and check the ingredients. Muah
Honey: Avoid giving honey to immunocompromised dogs and dogs under 1 year old!
Typically when you are using a royal frosting for cookies, you will make two different types of frosting consistency- a thicker frosting for the outline, and a thinner frosting to flood the inside with. You don’t have to do this but this is what you can do if you would like to go the extra mile for your furry friend.
With the thicker frosting, create the outline of your design and wait for it to dry for about 10 minutes. When you make the thicker frosting, you probably only need 2-3 Tablespoons of water. The important thing is that it is thick enough to hold its shape, but thin enough that you can squeeze it through a piping tip.
Fill in the outline with the thinner frosting and smooth it out with the tip of your finger. When you make the thin frosting, you will need 3-4 Tablespoons of water, and maybe more depending on how smooth of a finish you would like to have.
Storage: Store homemade peanut butter dog treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 months or in the freezer for up to 8 months.

Turbulent Weather Safety Tips
Source: AccuWeather (edited)
We are definitely in the summer “turbulent weather” season. It’s unpredictable and on some days, severe. It can change our travel plans, what we wear on a particular day, and if you have a dog, it can be very frightening for your pet. See “Calming Your Dog during a Thunderstorm” for five tips on how to calm your dog in that situation.
But back to us people, here are safety tips for two situations you could encounter this summer.
Lightning Safety Tips
If you’re caught outside in a thunderstorm, the overall risk of being struck by lightning is very low, with odds of one in 15,300, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). But there are proper safety precautions you can take to further protect yourself when lightning is a risk in your area.
When thunder roars, get indoors, is a catch phrase used by the NWS for people to remember. The safest place during a thunderstorm is inside. If you can’t get indoors, here are some other precautions you can take to protect yourself during a thunderstorm:
• Cars are better than nothing. While being in an enclosed car is not as safe as being inside a building, it is safer than staying outside.
• Stay low: It’s best to get as low to the ground as possible – you do not want to be the tallest thing around during a thunderstorm.
• Avoid bodies of water. Water is an excellent conductor of electricity, meaning it can travel far.
• Tents and pavilions are not good options. Many tents and pavilions have metallic frames, or frames made of other conductive materials. They are just as risky to stand under as a lone, tall tree.
• Don’t dawdle. While lightning can occasionally strike farther away, it typically strikes within a 10-mile radius around the storm. If you can hear thunder, then it’s time to get inside.
• Always check the forecast before heading outside. If you know you’re going to be outside for an extended period of time, far from any nearby buildings or your car, check your local forecast before you leave the house for the day.
Floodwater Safety Tips
Over half of all flood-related drownings occur when a vehicle is driven into dangerous floodwaters, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). If you come across a flooded roadway, it is important to Turn Around, Don’t Drown! ® Just one foot of moving water is enough to sweep away your vehicle. While you should avoid driving into flooded roadways, if you happen to find yourself trapped in your car in fast-moving water the most important thing to remember to do is to stay calm. According to Car. com, here are a few other things to remember:
• Turn on your headlights and hazard lights to make it easier for emergency personnel to locate you.
• Unbuckle your seat belt and unlock your doors.
• Take your jacket and outer clothing off.
• If you can open your windows, do so slowly, climb out, move to higher ground and call 911.
If you can’t open your windows, you’ll have to open your doors. To do so, you must first equalize the water pressure inside your car to match the outside. This will require water to enter the car and fill up to about neck level. Once the doors are open, swim safely to land and call 911.

Rotary Club of Slatington donates to Slatington Public Library
On June 29, the Carla Green, Rotary Club of Slatington president, presented Lynne Fedorcha, Slatington Public Library board treasurer, with a grant for $2,500. The money will be used to upgrade the Main Street door security, to enhance outdoor lighting, and to purchase a new staff computer.
The library’s capital improvements are grant funded, as are many of the non-emergency repairs and equipment replacements. As you may recall, the Rotary Club of Slatington replaced the sign that adorns the front of our building and also helped us purchase presentation equipment, including a projector, white boards, a document reader, risers, and a table and chairs.
In addition to the Slatington Rotary, we have been fortunate to receive annual grants from Mickley-Fravel, Horsehead (now BEFESA), and the Trexler Foundation. Money from the Trexler Foundation is being used to purchase the elevator. Construction of the elevator shaft is underway. Our library will be open for most days of this project. You can follow the project on our website: slatingtonlibrary.org. Go to the Gallery page to see pictures. These will be updated periodically. We are grateful to our many patrons and friends who have donated to this project. The cost more than doubled since the plan’s inception, so donations to our Elevator Fund are always appreciated.

Extreme temperatures can cause heatstroke. Some signs of heatstroke are heavy panting, glazed eyes, a rapid heartbeat, difficulty breathing, excessive thirst, lethargy, fever, dizziness, lack of coordination, profuse salivation, vomiting, a deep red or purple tongue, seizure and unconsciousness.
Animals are at particular risk for heat stroke if they are very old, very young, overweight, not conditioned to prolonged exercise, or have heart or respiratory disease. Some breeds of dogs—like boxers, pugs, shih tzus and other dogs and cats with short muzzles—will have a much harder time breathing in extreme heat.
How to treat a pet suffering from heatstroke
Move your pet into the shade or an air-conditioned area. Apply ice packs or cold towels to their head, neck and chest or run cool (not cold) water over them. Let them drink small amounts of cool water or lick ice cubes. Take them directly to a veterinarian.
