In terms of community in this issue, we want to look at two things. The first is volunteering in our community. There are many opportunities to volunteer and as you probably know, most organizations that rely on volunteers are often very understaffed in that area.

No matter your age and no matter if you have volunteered in the past or not, our article on volunteering, “Volunteering in the Community,” will detail the main reasons people choose to volunteer, according to the World Volunteer Web. In addition we provide you tips on how to select the best volunteer opportunity for you.

purchase something, how you pay can make a big difference for the merchant. Read “Supporting Small Business in the Community” for the details.

We are also continuing our focus on matters of health that we began last year, and because March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, we are going to look at that very topic. Be sure and read “Colorectal Cancer: What to Know” for valuable information around the symptoms, screening recommendations and ways to reduce your risk of getting the disease.

Next we’ll look at how, and why, the time to start planning your summer road trip is right now. It’s really true. Some aspects of planning a summer road trip would be best done by the end of April. Think about it. You might need new tires on your vehicle, or vehicles if you’ll be pulling a trailer. You also might want to plan your route and even make reservations along the way, for either accommodations or attractions. We’ll give you some good pointers in “Plan Your Summer Road Trip Now.”

And finally, with spring just around the corner and nurseries and garden centers opening up again, you might find yourself on the lookout for a new houseplant or two. You probably know there are some real beauties to be had. There are also some real beauties that can outlive us with proper care. It almost seems odd to think about passing a plant from one generation to the next, but in “(Very) Long-Lasting Houseplants” we’ll tell you about a few you can do that with very easily.

So that’s our line-up for this first issue of March 2024. We hope you’ll join us next time when we switch gears to Easter and “getting ready for spring” – both indoors and out. See you then!

I was born in Wilmington Delaware, but grew up in Slatington. I started flying drones 5 years ago for fun. My 1st drone was a $12 toy drone from WISH. Nonetheless, I took off and started flying it as if I've been flying all my life and it was at that point I was hooked.

My girl bought me my 1st real drone and from there I watched and learned a lot from YouTube videos and asked every question to everyone in my drone groups along with months of practicing, and wasting time and money on drones that would fly away on their own!

So I researched best camera drones and invested in a top brand from DJI the best drone company on the planet, they were a lot more expensive but

you get what you pay for, and the technology is beyond anything that you can ever imagine.

Almost 5 years later and after 50 drones and time and money wasted, I was completely satisfied and ready to dedicate myself to becoming a drone photographer-an aerial imagery specialist.

Have you ever thought of becoming a volunteer in our community? You can make a world of difference by doing that, not only on a person-toperson basis, but also for the organizations you’re helping that are often very understaffed.

According to the World Volunteer Web, below are the top 10 reasons for volunteering. No matter your age, if you have never been a volunteer before, maybe these reasons – as well as the tips on “how to get started” – can help you find the right volunteering opportunity for you.

#1: It’s good for you. Volunteering provides physical and mental rewards. It reduces stress and makes you healthier. In terms of stress, experts report that when you focus on someone other than yourself, it interrupts the usual tension-producing patterns in your life. It also gives you healthier moods and emotions like optimism and joy, as well as a sense of control over your fate, all of

which helps to strengthen the immune system.

business pays higher fees than it does if you pay any other way. Accepting a cash payment typically costs the business the least, and payments by debit card or Venmo linked to your bank account are somewhere in between.

You might never think about it – unless the business charges you extra to use plastic, but a business can really feel the higher fees from credit cards. That is especially true if it doesn’t make a large profit to begin with.

Mostly Hidden Purchase Fees

When you pay with a credit card online or in-store, the business might owe a collection of fees to multiple companies. Those can include Visa or Mastercard, the bank that issued your card and other financial companies you’ve never heard of that function somewhere in the middle of the transaction.

If you make a $100 purchase with a credit card, the store could owe around $2 to $3 in fees to the companies that handle your payment. If you pay with Apple Pay or Google Pay that’s linked to your credit card, the store’s fees are the same.

A less expense option for the small business is if you pay with a debit card. A $100 debit-card purchase might cost a small shop about 50 to 60 cents in payment fees, in part because debit fees are regulated by the government. In contrast, banks use the higher merchant fees they collect on credit cards to give you rewards points.

Online stores tend to pay higher fees for your card payments than physical stores. But all is not equal: gas stations pay a different rate than fast-food restaurants or supermarkets. A big business probably pays far lower fees than a small one.

If you shop with a high-end rewards card, it tends to cost a merchant even more than a basic card. But if the business uses Square or it’s an Etsy shop, the fees probably are the same if you pay with a credit or debit card.

What You Can Do

It’s your choice whether the convenience, protections and rewards benefits of a credit card make it the right payment method for you. You could decide that at a giant business like Home Depot, Amazon or Sam’s Club, it doesn’t matter how you pay. They have the power to negotiate the lowest possible payment fees.

But when it makes sense, choosing to pay by cash or a debit card at a neighborhood hair salon or small bookstore will make a difference to that business. That said financial industry executives point out that it also costs a business to accept cash. For one thing, taking cash creates a higher risk of robberies. Also, customers tend to spend less when they do a cash purchase rather than when using a credit card. One thing to remember as the shopper is that credit cards can offer the best protections, if something goes wrong.

Plan Your Summer Road Trip Now

Without the need to book a flight or coordinate other transportation, it’s easy to rely on spontaneity for a last-minute escape once the weather warms up. The beauty of a road trip is its structured freedom: you can do anything you want, just as long as you are willing and able to drive.

But pushing off your planning until sunnier days could affect your vacation down the road. Instead, invest a little time now to make the most out of your road trip when summer arrives.

Planning Your Route

If planning your route feels daunting, start by clustering destinations that will give you something concrete to plan around. Depending on the number of days you expect to be gone, you can add or remove stops along the way.

A classic way to plan a road trip is to follow one of America’s best-known vacation drives, like Route 66. A drive like that is still famous for a reason: It’s one of the best routes for capturing the

history of America. You can use social media along the way to find modern attractions and accommodations.

You can also search for geotags along the route

for crowdsourced advice on what to visit while you pass through. If your trip will include hiking, use hiking apps like All Trails to explore what nature recommendations people have made outside of national park suggestions.

In your planning stage, start following accounts of bloggers or local experts who post about the areas you’ll be visiting. And to keep yourself from overcommitting, keep a list of potential food, entertainment and nature stops along the way to reference when you need options.

Whether you’re planning to follow a well-known path or keep a looser schedule, try to become familiar with your major stopping points by mid to late April. This will give you time to research lesser-known sights and dig for local suggestions. Then by the time you hit the road, you’ll have the confidence to make quick (but informed) decisions.

While reserving a spot inside a national park isn’t the only way to camp near popular nature sites, it is well worth the foresight if you can book a few nights ahead of time. While some national parks save a portion of their campsite reservations to be released a week before booking, most park reservations open six months in advance. Also look into permits for popular hikes and activities at Recreation.gov.

Getting Your Gear / The essentials include a backpack with a bladder, good walking or hiking

shoes, and sun protection regardless of how much outdoor activity you’re planning. Also gather road trip essentials ranging from storage options to electronics and a paper atlas in case you’re out of cell service range. A cooler, a large water jug and items for prepping and storing food are essential for even one long day on the road.

Get New Tires / Beyond the typical under-thehood checks, the biggest investment to make in your road trip vehicle is a new set of tires. If you’ve been putting off upgrading your tires, consider buying tires with a longer tread life or thicker tread so you’re ready for any terrain.

Those conditions include inflammatory bowel disease, such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, or a personal or family history of colorectal cancer or colorectal polyps.

If you think you are at increased risk for colorectal cancer, speak with your doctor about when to begin screening, which test is right for you, and how often you should get tested.

Reducing Risk

Overall, the most effective way to reduce your risk of colorectal cancer is to get screened for colorectal cancer routinely, beginning at age 45.

Almost all colorectal cancers begin as precancerous polyps (abnormal growths) in the colon or rectum. Such polyps can be present in the colon for years before invasive cancer develops. They may not cause any symptoms, especially early on.

Colorectal cancer screening can find precancerous polyps so they can be removed before they turn into cancer. In this way, colorectal cancer is prevented. Screening can also find colorectal cancer early, when treatment works best.

Most conversations about the life spans of houseplants revolve around the struggle to keep them from dying. But many plants, with the right care, can outlast their human owners and live for generations. If you’re looking for a houseplant at garden centers this spring and you want one with the potential to live for decades, here are some good bets.

Croton

Crotons can live a long time and handle some neglect as long as they get plenty of light. Thanks to thick leaves, they are a fairly forgiving plant in terms of getting too much, or too little water. That said when indoors in lower light levels, they can suffer if the water isn’t pretty much “on point.”

Crotons need fertile, well-drained yet moist soil. They should be watered only when the top one inch of soil dries out. In general they prefer warm temperatures and sunlight, so positioning them right up close to a window works well, as long as

Holiday Cactus

“Holiday Cactus” is a term used to describe several species of cactus that bloom around the time of their namesake, such as Thanksgiving, Christmas or Easter. These cactus varieties like high humidity and bright but filtered light. To keep them thriving for years, you’ll want to avoid overwatering – soggy soil could lead to root rot. A great feature is that they are easy to propagate by pinching off a flattened pad, then letting it dry out for a day or two before putting it in soil.

Jade Tree (Plant)

Jade trees, also known as jade plants, are succulents that thrive in sunlight. An east- or westfacing windowsill is usually going to be your very best bet for the most light. These plants can endure for decades, in part because they tolerate neglect. They’re famous for their ability to survive being watered as little as once a month, depending on conditions. Let them dry out between each watering.

A night-blooming cereus can grow for decades indoors or out, as long as it gets enough light and

Continued from page 17 humidity. As the name implies, these plants produce short-lived flowers at night that retreat by morning. They can bloom multiple times per growing season. It will almost always flower best when summered outside because of the higher light levels.

To keep it happy, fill its container with a potting mix designated for cactuses and let it become root-bound. It doesn’t mind a crowded pot. It is best to water only when the top half or so of the potting mix dries out; water even less in the fall and winter when it’s not growing actively. Fertilize in the spring and summer.

Spider Plant

Spider plants are very popular in part because they are incredibly forgiving of neglect. They have tuberous, thick roots that store moisture, so they can tough it out through a missed watering. They do, however, prefer some sun. If you can sit and read a magazine without supplemental lighting, that’s the spot for the spider plant.

Another great thing about a spider plant is that

they reproduce easily. They produce lots of “plantlets” that you just pluck off the main plant, drop in potting mix and enjoy.

This includes problems with emailing, filling out forms, typing documents, etc. These appointments are not a substitute for major computer help or troubleshooting, and we cannot guarantee every problem will

be fixed, but we will always do our best! Available tech appointments are every Tuesday at 4:00pm and 4:30pm and every other Thursday at 11:00am and 11:30am. What's happening in the ocean in springtime?

When you think of springtime on land, you might think of birds migrating, flowers blooming, and leaves emerging. While these

changes are happening on land, changes are happening in the ocean, too!

But how can you tell if spring has sprung in the sea? This graphic explains some of the seasonal effects that take place as ocean waters warm and days grow longer.

We’re sharing this during springtime in the Northern Hemisphere, but these effects also take place when it's spring in the Southern Hemisphere. See our changing seasons resource collection to learn more.

Upwelling

As weather patterns change in the spring, surface waters in some regions are pushed offshore by wind and replaced by cold, nutrientrich water that “wells up” from below. In these

regions, the nutrient-rich water encourages the growth of marine life, leading to high productivity during the springtime.

Phytoplankton bloom

Phytoplankton, which are tiny microscopic plants, grow quickly and in large quantities as more sunlight is available and surface waters get warmer. The annual spring bloom is an ecologically important occurrence that fuels many ocean ecosystems and can even be seen by satellites in space.

Whale migration

Humpback whales travel great distances during their seasonal migration between cold, productive summer feeding habitats and warm, shallow winter mating and calving waters. During springtime, they migrate back to colder waters, bringing their new calves with them.

Sea ice extent

Sea ice forms, grows, and melts in the ocean as sunlight availability and temperatures change throughout the seasons. The annual maximum extent, when there is the most sea ice, occurs in early spring. Sea ice decreases through spring and summer to come to an annual minimum extent in early fall.

Lehigh Gap Nature Center’s “Nature in Art Club” hosts first Art Show at LGNC

The Lehigh Gap Nature Center’s new “Nature in Art Club” will be presenting a Spring art show onsite at the LGNC’s Osprey House from March 9th-15th. Admission is free and the show will be open to the public from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on both Saturday, March 9th and Sunday, March 10th. Art will also be available for viewing throughout the following week 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., concluding on Friday, March 15th with an Artist’s Reception from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m.

The Lehigh Gap Nature Center (LGNC) has gathered various types of art from over 25 local area artists who have submitted over 70 pieces of artwork for the show. Media types include oil, acrylic and watercolor paint, photography, and several kinds of artisanal work. Many of the art pieces will available for purchase at the show.

LGNC Nature in Art Club member Anna Costello said, “We are excited to present the first art show led by the Nature Center’s own art club. Come out and see works from local artists, photographers, and artisans. Enjoy the hiking and biking trails while you are here too!” The show is free and open to the public.

Lehigh Gap Nature Center is a nonprofit environmental education center with a history of supporting the arts. On November 5, at Muhlenberg College, the Krysta Hankee Memorial Fund was honored at the Wallenberg Tribute Dinner for its community building and family support initiatives. The evening began with the Wallenberg Tribute Lecture “Culture as Infrastructure: Dracula, Zombies, and Contemporary Healthcare” presented by Lorenzo Servitje, associate professor of literature and medicine and the director of the health, medicine, and society program at Lehigh University.

Every year since 1984, Muhlenberg’s Institute for Religious and Cultural Understanding has honored the legacy of Raoul Wallenberg, a Swedish diplomat who saved 100,000 Jews from deportation to death camps during World War II. The public lecture is followed by a reserved seating dinner honoring one or more individuals for their courageous moral action on behalf of others.

At the Wallenberg Tribute Dinner, the Institute for Religious and Cultural Understanding honored the Krysta Hankee Memorial Fund, created by Bill and Chris Hankee in memory of their daughter. One of the Fund’s notable initiatives is the “Miles that Matter” program. This program provides food

and fuel gift cards to hospitals and family service agencies, allowing social workers to distribute them to families in need. This assistance helps struggling families put food on the table and cover travel expenses for ongoing medical needs.

With the support of volunteers, community partners, and generous donations from individuals, the Krysta Hankee Memorial Fund has impacted the lives of hundreds of families. Whether through “Miles that Matter,” the distribution of adaptive bikes for special needs children, or educating community members about organ donation, the Krysta Hankee Memorial Fund consistently showcases courageous moral action in support of others.

Wanda (Gaczor) Erdosy

Wanda (Gaczor)

Erdosy, 97, of Pennsville, had a “Spiritual birth” and was welcomed into heaven by family passed, on February 8, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late Alek L. Erdosy. Born November 27, 1926, in North Catasauqua, Wanda was the daughter of the late Stanley and Catherine (Youngkoski) Gaczor. Loved and cherished by her family, Wanda lived a full and happy life as a woman of faith with a strong work ethic. She was a “one-of-a-kind” and giving person, who loved to tell stories and talk to anyone who would listen. With witty banter and a boisterous laugh, she shared many memories from her life, which will provide those she loved with

comfort and peace.

Wanda was an avid reader of historical books and loved to cook and dance polkas. She was a member of Queenship of Mary Church, formerly Our Lady of Hungary Church in Northampton. Wanda’s family would like to thank the staff of Liza’s House Personal Care Facility and Compassus Care for their wonderful care and support during Wands’s time under their watch.

Survivors: daughters, Alexis Saylor (Woody), Amelia Serensits (Jerome), Vanessa Groller (James) and son Elek (Kate). She was blessed with 10 grandchildren, Jake, Ty, Richie, Jerry, Jimmy, Jason, Jamie, Mathew, Mark, and Alexis; 9 greatgrandchildren, Samantha, Autumn, Willie, Alexandra, Alex, Jack, Luke, Abby, and Isaac; and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by a son Anton; sisters, Helen Sodl, Catherine Tapler, Irene Sheckler, and Jean Kotrosits; and a brother Stanley Gaczor.

Services: A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Friday, February 16, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. in the Queenship of Mary Church, 1324 Newport Ave., Northampton. Family. Interment followed in Allen Union Cemetery.

Contributions: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the church or Compassus Care in Wanda’s memory.

Horse sleigh rides were given to students who attended one-room and two-room schoolhouses in Lehigh Township during their recess and lunch time by William Beck, his brothers and friends in 1950. Becky had permission from the school directors to give the students free sleigh rides when it snowed. There were nine schools in the district and if there was enough snowfall that winter, he gave each student a sleigh ride.

Built in 1924 by Gurskey, this business was known as the Schuylkill Ice and Cold Storage Co. and was one of Walnutport’s four ice plants. Conveniently situated directly across from the Central Railroad of New Jersey railroad station, ice could be loaded to those cars that required refrigeration of fresh meats, fruits, and vegetables. This station operated until 1952 and was demolished in 1956. Wilson lived with his wife, Dorothy and their ten children on nearby Canal Street. and served as supervisor of this ice plant from the 1930s until his death in 1954. Owner, Robert Gurskey, employed five other employees here in Walnutport and made many trips back and forth from his other ice plant in Allentown at 17th and Turner Streets.

After Gurskey’s death in 1950, records show new ownership under the name Transparent Ice Co. until 1960. While the Walnutport plant remained operating until 1960, the 17th and Turner business was sold to Richard Muller, who started his new swimming pool business in February 1956 and called it Ice City. The Walnutport borough bought the property in May of 1961 and started using it as their maintenance building the following year.

Every year The Rotary Club of Slatington, in keeping with Rotary Intemational's Theme of "Service Above Self' awards grants to various community organizations that make a difference in the lives of the people of the Northern Lehigh area. This past year the Rotary Club of Slatington awarded grants to the Northern Lehigh Recreation Authority, Northern Lehigh Swimming Pool, Slatington Public Library, Helping Hands Food Ministry, Springside Sportsman Club and various other organizations.

Projects ranged from grants for the purchase of LUNKER trout for a kids fishing contest, annual Christmas Gift program for needy children, medical surgery for Cleft Palate & Cleft Lips and helping to eradicate polio. The Rotary also provided other grants and gifts.

The library is holding a GIANT BOOK SALE, the week of March 11th through the 16th. Hard backs will be $1.00 and paperbacks 50 cents. There will be some puzzles and DVDs as well. Stop in during our regular hours.

Pre-school Story hour returns on Tuesday, March 19th at 11:00am. The program will run through April 23rd. There will be stories, crafts and snacks.

The 2024 Woman’s Club of Slatington Arts Contest will be April 15th. It will include coloring contests for pre-school children through 2nd grade, and adults. He asked if I’ve ever done this before? I answered and said “No”

I’m just getting older And feeling poor.

He asked me to make a list Of who he must call Oh too many names, addresses and telephone numbers, I’m not having a ball

What kind of funeral do you want or need?

A casket, a viewing or a cremation indeed.

Rescue Mission congratulates its Clean Team Workforce Employee of the Month for January, John K.

John came to the Mission’s Emergency Shelter in October 2023, after he lost his place to live. John lived with a friend during the COVID pandemic. He helped pay rent to reduce the mortgage cost, however, the owner decided to sell the house which left John homeless and with little savings after being laid off during the pandemic. Luckily, another friend told John that the Allentown Rescue Mission could help him with temporary housing.

While staying in the Emergency Shelter, John learned about the eight-week Transformation Program and Clean Team Workforce. He liked that he could learn new life and workforce development skills and then receive a job when he graduated from the Transformation Program. John also discovered that the Mission offered an

educational scholarship fund that could help him pay for courses to reinstate his Commercial Driver’s License that lapsed after he was laid off. He joined the Transformation Program in October 2023 and graduated in December 2023.

John came to the Clean Team Workforce with plenty of work experience and has been doing very well. He served in the U.S. Army for 10 years as a radio teletype operator before being honorably discharged as a sergeant. Afterward, he worked in warehouses and drove as a long-haul truck

driver for 10 years until he was laid off during the pandemic.

The Allentown Rescue Mission gave John the time and help he needed to put his life back together after the pandemic stole his livelihood. John’s future plans are to start driving trucks again after his CDL is reinstated and to save money for his retirement. The Mission wishes John the best and knows he has the tools to succeed.

The Allentown Rescue Mission, a 501c3, 123 bed non-profit homeless shelter has been providing shelter for homeless men since 1900. In addition to emergency shelter services (365 days a year), the Allentown Rescue Mission offers a residential life skills program, and transitional employment on the Clean Team Workforce that’s available for hire to the community. The Clean Team Workforce pays the men above PA state minimum wage–helping them save a nest egg to transition back into the community. In a typical year, the Allentown Rescue Mission provides shelter services for over 946 men per year, and serves over 42,000 meals a year to men in need.

On Saturday, February 24, seven Northampton Area School District teams competed in the Northeast Regional Odyssey of the Mind Tournament.

Odyssey of the Mind is a team-based creativity competition incorporating many skills and talents. The program is an international educational program whose mission is to provide creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Through solving open-ended problems, students develop creativethinking skills that can be applied to real-life situations. Teams from throughout the U.S. and more than 20 other countries participate in the program.

Students learn the real work-world skills of defining the problem, developing many possible solutions and establishing criteria to evaluate the process. They then decide, as a group, how to
