IU announced the 2022 spring semester will be held in person in an email Jan. 4. The first day of classes is Jan. 10. Students are still expect-

ed to be masked while indoors, however the university is encouraging people to wear the best mask possible, according to the email. This includes wearing surgical masks over cloth ones and KN95 masks over surgi-

cal masks, according to IU’s COVID-19 website. “This carefully considered decision, with the health and well-being of IU community members in mind, is the result of IU’s continued commitment to

monitoring COVID-19 data and managing our response with guidance from the latest science,” the email said. This decision comes as some universities, including Harvard, Northwestern and Stanford have decided

to go virtual for the first few weeks of the semester. IU medical experts will continue to monitor the pandemic and make adjustments as necessary to COVID-19 guidelines, according to the email.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Hello Hoosiers, welcome back. It’s a new semester, which means we have a new staff at the Indiana Daily Student. I am extremely excited to continue serving you, our readers. As we start the spring semester, our staff will be prioritizing internal development, as well as the production of more multimedia and digital content to offer our readers a more enhanced reading experience. We will continue to publish content daily online in addition to our Thursday print edition. Our staff also works very hard to put together daily and weekly newsletters to keep you updated on the news in our Bloomington community. This semester, we will continue to place an emphasis not just on news at Indiana University, but also in our greater Bloomington community. This includes weekly reporting on our city council and the city’s executive offices. Last semester, our investigations team produced extraordinary long-form content. Two examples of our enterprise reporting included allegations of an unwelcoming environment for LGBTQ people at a Bloomington church, as well as a piece about Bloomington residents who were on the verge of losing their homes to eviction. This semester, we will continue to serve our readers with high-quality investigations. As always, we continue to encourage our readers to submit letters to the editor. These can be about something the IDS has published or about current events. These can be sent to letters@ idsnews.com. More information can be found on the IDS website. Is there something that we are not covering that you would like to see us cover? Let us know. Email editor@ idsnews.com. If you have any questions, comments or news tips please always feel free to reach out to me at editor@ idsnews.com or through Twitter. As always, thank you for your readership, and I wish you a happy and healthy semester.

Beltalowda will release an album Jan. 7 By Nadia Scharf lindena@iu.edu | @lexilindenmayer

The Bloomington band Beltalowda is set to release a new album, “The Days That Are Given And The Ways We Live Them,” on Jan. 7. The post-punk album features Mat Alano-Martin on guitar and vocals, JD Short on bass and Dagan Thogerson on drums. It will be released on the band’s Bandcamp page. Purchasing the album includes immediate access to the digital album and a vinyl, which will be shipped in December 2022. 50% of sales will be donated to a social justice cause. The album is inspired by Alano-Martin’s experience during 2021, where he lost several people: his mother, as well as a former lover and a former musical collaborator, according to a Beltalowda press release. “In a lot of ways ‘The Days…’ is an album about death, but it is also about

the obligations of the living," Alano-Martin said. "To be of service, to take care of one another, both in our personal day-to-day lives and in a society as a whole." Short led production

on the album, which varies in style from dance punk, grunge and “midwest emo,” among others. The lead single, “Red Sky Ash,” features guest William Elliott Whitmore, a blues and folk singer.
