Provost releases Strategic Plan FROM IDS REPORTS
The Office of the Provost released the new IU Strategic Plan late Wednesday afternoon to be reviewed and open to public comment. Provost Lauren Robel will discuss the plan during a town meeting March 4 and the State of the Campus Address March 25. “The important thing to know about the plan that’s up now is that, while it’s a product of a lot of people’s thought, it is a draft,” Robel said at the Bloomington Professional Council meeting shortly after the plan was released. “So I really do want your comments and thoughts about it.” The plan discusses six main categories — undergraduate life, graduate education, research, faculty development, globalization

Hoosiers continue slide with loss to Michigan
FROM IDS REPORTS
A motorist died in a two-car accident Wednesday on State Road 46. While driving east on SR 46, one of the drivers involved in the crash crossed a patch of ice, which caused the driver to lose control approaching a curve in the road, Monroe County Sheriff ’s Department Chief Deputy Michael Pershing said. The vehicle crossed the center line and collided into another westbound car, striking it in the front passenger side. Because the coroner had not yet notified the deceased drivers’ family, Pershing would not say which driver had died, nor offer any other information about their identities. The other driver, who survived but suffered injuries, was taken to IU Health Bloomington Hospital, Pershing said. — Dennis Barbosa
State board reviews academic standards BY SYDNEY MURRAY slmurray@indiana.edu
The Indiana State Board of Education is currently in the process of reviewing the Indiana Academic Standards. Last spring, the Indiana General Assembly passed House Enrolled Act 1427, which asked the SBOE to conduct a review and implement the new standards by July 1, 2014. The SBOE must review current standards, as well as establish college and career readiness standards. SBOE member Brad Oliver said HEA 1427 was created because some Hoosiers were concerned about the Common Core State Standards and didn’t feel Indiana had reviewed them before implementation. Final adoption of the new academic standards is scheduled for SEE STANDARDS, PAGE 6

IU women’s basketball maintained a six-point halftime lead against Michigan with a chance to add a conference win and move one step closer toward clinching a postseason bid, only to see it slip away. Michigan (17-10, 8-6) outscored IU (17-9, 4-9) 44-26 in the second half and handed the Hoosiers their third consecutive loss, 70-58. With only three regular-season games remaining — two of which are on the road — IU Coach Curt Miller said the loss at home was a missed opportunity. “We knew this was a very big week, and we don’t talk about it with the team, but the coaching staff knows that it’s a big week,” Miller said. Senior forward Simone Deloach agreed Michigan was a winnable game, but the Hoosiers lost their resilience during the second half. Roy to perform 10th show at Comedy Attic BY ANTHONY BRODERICK aebroder@indiana.edu
Comedy Attic owner Jared Thompson said comedian John Roy is severely underrated. On Feb. 20 through Feb. 22, Roy will be performing his recordbreaking 10th show at the Comedy Attic. Depending on the day, ticket prices range from $6 to $12. “I honestly believe that John Roy is not only one of the funniest comedians I know, but also one of the most criminally underrated ones,” Thompson said. “I truly believe he should have been recognized more than he already is right now. Our audiences and everyone else at the Comedy Attic love him and we strongly believe in his career.”
Currently living in West Hollywood, Roy has had many key appearances throughout his years. He has appeared on the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, the Tonight Show and Conan. He also performed duringBloomington’s Limestone Festival last year, and has a podcast called “Don’t Ever Change” that discusses teenage life and high school stories. John Roy is one of the few acts who performs at the Comedy Attic twice a year. Thompson said Roy is distinct in because his standup act consists of his old material mixed with his newer material. “All the material I perform is COURTESY PHOTO
