IU part of top 25 LGBTQ friendly campuses By Alyson Malinger afmaling@indiana.edu | @aly_mali

A table full of vanilla icing and rainbow cupcakes on the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Student Support Services office represented the sweet taste of the victory that the IU community was celebrating, said Doug Bauder, coordinator of IU’s GLBT Student Support Services, a unit of the Office of the Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Multicultural Affairs. The Campus Pride list of the top 25 LGBTQ-friendly colleges and universities included IU-Bloomington for the third time in the 2015 record. Campus Pride is a national nonprofit network of student leaders and campus groups devoted to improving college life for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students across the United States. Shane Windmeyer, executive director of Campus Pride, earned a master’s degree in education from IU in 1997 and received the first IU GLBT Alumni Association Distinguished

Basketball players cited for alcohol From IDS reports

IU Athletics confirmed sophomore forward Emmitt Holt and freshman center Thomas Bryant were cited for illegal possession of alcohol. According to Indiana State Excise Police, Holt, 19, and Bryant, 18, were cited at 12:50 a.m. Friday. Both players were seated in a parked vehicle with three other people in the lot of Convenient Food Mart, located at 1401 N. Dunn St., when they were

approached by Excise officers. Holt alerted Bryant of the officers, and both players attempted to conceal their bottles of vodka, Holt with a 750 milliliter bottle and Bryant with a 1.75 liter bottle. Both players were given summonses and will be required to appear in Monroe County court to determine their punishment. The other three passengers were not cited. “We take this matter very seriously and are continuing to gather information,” IU Athletics

representative Jonathan Campbell said in the IU Athletics media release. Holt, who Emmitt Holt graduated from Webster Schroeder High School in New York, played 29 games off the bench in 2014-15 and ranked second on the team with 21 blocks. The sophomore was involved in the vehicle accident that seriously injured forward Devin

Davis in November 2014, when he was suspended two regular season games. Bryant, who has yet to play a game for the Hoosiers, was ranked 20th in the ESPN Top 100 and second in the state of New York. He committed April 4 and signed with the Hoosiers April 22. The McDonald’s All-American received offers from Kentucky, Ohio State and UCLA, among other schools. Taylor Lehman & Andy Wittry

With the offense in crimson and the defense in white, the final seconds of IU’s two-minute drill ticked away. Sophomore quarterback Zander Diamont stepped into the pocket to pass. Before he could even begin his progression, a 6-foot-5, 230-pound white blur found its way through the crimson wall of the offensive line, flushing the sophomore out of the pocket. That white blur was redshirt senior Zack Shaw, who rushed from his bandit position and forced a pass that was batted down to end the drive. “Throw it again, Zander,” IU Coach Kevin Wilson said. Shaw had gotten to the quarterback so quickly that the purpose of the final practice play — to practice throwing deep passes — was upended. “I take a lot of pride in being a force player and wreaking havoc on the edge,” Shaw said about the bandit position. The fifth-year senior is a near lock to start in the bandit, which combines the responsibilities of a linebacker and a defensive end, in defensive coordinator Brian Knorr’s variation of the 3-4 scheme — the 3-3 bandit. Knorr and his scheme have been with the Hoosiers for two years now. “It’s kind of like being a defensive end, but I’m a linebacker as well because you’re at the edge of the defense,” Shaw said. The 3-3 bandit involves three defensive linemen — usually a nose tackle, a defensive tackle and a SEE SHAW, PAGE 5

On their national tour, seven Tibetan monks spread Buddha’s teachings. By Lyndsay Jones jonesly@umail.edu | @lyndsayjonesy

As cars passed the Unity of Bloomington parking lot, seven robed men engaged in a centuries-old ritual, seemingly oblivious to modernity passing by them. The Labrang Tashi Kyil Monastery in Tibet sent seven of its monks on a tour to the United States, and they came to Bloomington to present teachings of

peace and compassion, their translator Tenpa Phunstok said. “We have three missions,” Phunstok said. “To spread Buddha’s teaching, to preserve our culture and to raise funds for the monastery.” On Monday, they concluded a threepart series of events at Unity with a Fire Puja ceremony. Phunstok addressed a small but

“Overtaken” addresses secrets, hidden truths By Sanya Ali siali@indiana.edu | @siali13

The curators of the Blueline Gallery often use their space to showcase multiple artists, though they don’t always have a specific aesthetic or theme in mind, owner Chelsea Sanders said. The most recent exhibit, “Overtaken,” looks at the secrets and hidden truths of life in the Midwest through the eyes of Danielle Urschel, a printmaker, and Mike Waddell, a photographer. The opening reception Aug. 7 included showing of recent work by both artists. The exhibit runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day through Sept. 25. SEE GALLERY, PAGE 5
