The IDS will not publish during winter break but will resume on Jan. 6, 2017. Stay informed at idsnews.com. LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Monday, Dec. 12, 2016

If you’re reading this, I want to say thank you. Because without you, the Indiana Daily Student would be nothing. This semester, the IDS staff tried to focus on you, the readers. We attempted to answer your questions and provide coverage you both wanted and needed to read. We started a discussion on campus sexual assault by sharing our own stories and yours. We investigated questions of consent and challenged the University on their own sexual misconduct policies. We sat in a courtroom and shared the sentencing details of Daniel Messel, who was convicted of murdering IU student Hannah Wilson. We reported until 3 a.m. as Donald Trump was elected president and documented the aftermath of this historically divided election. And near the end of the semester, we investigated allegations of abuse against former IU head coach Kevin Wilson. We were far from perfect, but I want to thank all of the readers who stuck with us and provided our reporters and editors with both support and critiques. We couldn’t have done it without you, and I look forward to seeing what the Indiana Daily Student does next semester under our next editor-inchief, Hannah Alani. Please continue to provide us with suggestions, critiques and encouragement as we cover this campus and community. We couldn’t do it without you.

om Allen and Mike Kirschner stood side-byside at the 2007 American Football Coaches Association Convention. The Ben Davis High School coaches — Allen the head coach, Kirschner his offensive coordinator — had just finished their seventh year together in Indianapolis with Hall of Fame coach Dick Dullaghan having passed the baton to Allen in 2004. Kirschner had just broken the news to Allen that he was interested in taking a job he’d been offered elsewhere. But Allen told him to reconsider. The successor to the legendary Dullaghan was moving on after three

seasons and a 25-12 record. Wabash College had offered him a defensive coordinator position. After 15 years, Allen was leaving high school football. * * * Sixteen-year-old John Stansell was moving into Oxford, Indiana, with his family in the late 1970s. Oxford, a town of less than 1,000 residents at the time, was also home to the Allens — Tom, Janet and their three children Nathan, Christy and Tommy. The family of five lived across the street, and before Stansell ended his first conversation with Tom, he’d already been asked to play for the local

high school football team. The Benton Central Bison were the pride of the Allen family. Stansell agreed, and that’s how he came to know Tommy, the 7-yearold kid who ran water to players and sprinted along the sidelines to pick up footballs for the officials during games. Anything to be around his dad and the football team, Stansell said. Tom was a strong and silent coach who knew how to motivate and teach his players. “All the players knew when Coach Allen turned his BC football hat around backwards, he was getting mad, and he was about to come into

Artists present 48 years of Christmas cards By Sanya Ali siali@indiana.edu | @siali13

Local artist Gary Anderson has been hand painting signs for the community for a number of years, and one of his notable works sits at the entrance of the Farmer House Museum. This piece of artwork, a brown background with Anderson’s distinct textual style, will now be accompanied by his most recent work, a collection of handmade Christmas cards created over the past 48 years. The Farmer House Museum will celebrate the holiday season with a combination of new and classic programming and a festive display in its gallery space. The space’s Bellevue Gallery, one of a few rooms in the old house that serve as the setting for more contemporary works, is decorated with

a Christmas tree in the corner and Anderson’s cards along the wall. The cards are grouped by decade, starting with one from the 1960s up through the 2010s. Anderson’s “48 Years of Christmas Cards” will be up at the museum through the month of December. The artist and sign maker began the project years ago as a college lithography or plate printing assignment and has continued making the cards along with his wife, Linda. Paul Kane, volunteer and artistin-residence at the space, said the exhibit represents more than just the identity of the artist. The small greeting cards range in imagery from ornate designs to pop culture figures and more. “It’s not only a personal biography for Gary, but it’s also like a
