Expectations for underdogs

They might not be expected to finish in the front of the pack based on their Qualifications times, but the dark horse teams still expect quite a bit from this year’s race. Members from six teams talked to the IDS about what they expected to get out of race day and what they want to accomplish on the track April 20 and 21.

“Being a team of all rookies, I think we just really want to get some experience racing the Little Five. We will definitely give it our all but we have no expectation of winning, for us it’s all about the journey and the experience.” Paige Daumeyer, Anchors Away

Cutter's Eric Young wins the 61st men's Little 500 on March 16, 2011, at Bill Armstrong Stadium. This Cutters win makes it their fifth straight consecutive win.

“The SDT bike team is so excited to be riding in the race this year, and we’re really hoping to reach our goal of being in the top 20 for our end result when we finish the race. I think we all hope, as a team, that we can compete competitively in the race while having an amazing time together.” Leila Gorstein, Sigma Delta Tau

“Basically, we want to improve from last year, and since we have more vets returning and have been working hard at the track, we are excited to see what will happen.”

Cutters rider Eric Young leads during the 2011 men's Little 500 bicycle race April 16, 2011 at Bill Armstrong Stadium.

Mary Hidde, Alpha Omicron Pi

“We are looking to win the Dixie Highway Award this year, awarded to the team that improves their quals position the most during the race. Last year, Acacia won the award and was able to finish an impressive fifth in the race after qualifying 30th. We have a strong ensemble of riders this year, and if we ride a smart race. Wright Cycling will have a good chance to impress some people come race day!”

HOW TO KEEP UP WITH THE RACE WATCH The IDS will stream both races live. Follow along at idsnews.com. HDNet will also stream both races live for the 10th straight year, live on hd.net.

Jack McMahon, Wright Cycling

“In this year’s race our team hopes to achieve a top-20 finish but above all establish a base for future teams to be built around. This is our house’s first time competing in four years, and we hope to ensure that we are a yearly participant and future contender in the race.” Bryan Medema, Phi Kappa Tau

“Broken bones, cinder burns and eternal glory.” Ted Tarricone, Team Amalgam

Riders race during the 2011 men's Little 500 on March 16, 2011, at Bill Armstrong Stadium. The Cutters won the race for the fifth consecutive year.

SPRING SERIES RECAP QUALIFICATIONS After Beta Theta Pi rode its men’s qualification lap in 2:21.05 — almost five seconds faster than the best 2011 qual time — at 8:50 a.m., 37 teams tried to go faster. They failed. Beta Theta Pi’s time stood, and the team will be in the first position come race day. It’s the third time in the fraternity’s history that it has been the pole-sitter for the race. The defending champion Cutters squad finished five seconds behind Beta Theta Pi and qualified eighth. Teter followed up a victory in the 2011 Little 500 with a victorious run in 2012 quals and will be in pole position for the first time since 2009. Teter’s time of 2:35.54 in 2009 is still the record, but this year’s time of 2:42.95 was good enough to win. INDIVIDUAL TIME TRIALS With an Individual Time Trials victory in sight, Delta Tau Delta rider RJ Stuart nearly fell victim to the dangerous third turn, hitting the gutter, but he steadied himself and continued to win his first career ITT title.

His time of 2:18.65 is the fastest since former Cutters rider Eric Young’s 2:18.25 in 2009 and the second-fastest since 2007. On the women’s side, Kappa Alpha Theta rider Kathleen Chelminiak improved her time by six seconds from her 2011 performance, finishing in 2:38.95. Teter’s Lisa Hutcheson came in second, ensuring that a Teter member finished in the top two for the third consecutive year. MISS-N-OUT Chelminiak kept her winning ways, as she rebounded from her ITT victory to outlast the field in the Miss-N-Out competition. She led wire-to-wire, leaving Delta Gamma’s Kayce Doogs and Hutcheson behind her. Chelminiak was the top seed, and she was joined in the top four by the other top-four seeds: Doogs, Hutcheson and Wing It’s Melissa Moeller. The men’s final was filled with lower seeds, such as No. 17 Sigma Chi rider Adam Fish and No. 11 Sven Gartner from Phi Delta Theta, but the victor was No. 2-seed Steve Sharp. Sharp stopped top-seeded

Stuart from sweeping the individual events when he passed him on the final two turns of the last lap. It was Sharp’s second career victory in the event. TEAM PURSUIT It was a day of repeats for the Team Pursuit, as both 2011 victors continued their success in the 2012 edition of the race. The day was doubly repetitive for men’s winner Delta Tau Delta, as the team faced Phi Delta Theta early in the competition and in the finals. Though they lost to Phi Delta in the first meeting, the riders from Delta Tau Delta finished first in the finals, preserving their second win in as many years. With its victory in the women’s race, Teter had its third consecutive Team Pursuit win, and claimed victory in the Spring Series. Both of the previous times they have won the Team Pursuit, the riders from Teter have also taken the championship on race day.

In a year dominated by an individual in both the men’s and women’s races, the stars led their teams to victory. Seniors Caitlin Van Kooten (Teter) and Eric Young (Cutters) both won the Individual Time Trials and proved their prowess on race day. Van Kooten and her Teter squad avoided an early crash and ended up lapping the field with 50 laps remaining. IDS FILE PHOTO They coasted to victory. It’s easy to tell a serious cyclist from a casual one. Someone riding for leisure or a little exercise is drenched in sweat and trying in vain to ride smoothly as the wind catches his or her T-shirt. Serious riders, however, are clothed in sleek, tight cycling jerseys that do more than simply look good, said former Little 500 Race Director Pam Loebig. “That cotton T-shirt would get wet from your sweat and just sit on you,” Loebig said. “A cycling jersey will pull that sweat away

from your skin, and then that fabric dries quickly. It will evaporate your sweat faster, which is more comfortable.” Cycling jerseys also fit more snugly, cutting down on wind resistance. Cycling shorts can also provide more comfort to riders, as opposed to regular shorts with constrictive elastic and slightly uncomfortable waistbands. On race day, Little 500 riders have used cycling jerseys for about two decades, but in recent years, teams have been using personalized practice jerseys a great deal.

Acacia rider Greg Bortz said a large amount of thought goes into the design of these jerseys, whether they’re for a Greek team or an independent team. Acacia tweaks its jerseys every two or three years but always keeps the distinctive blackand-gold look, Bortz said. “I know with a fraternity, your house colors, it’s a big deal,” Bortz said. “It’s definitely a cool pride thing because our T-shirts for people coming to watch us are always the same colors, too.” — Alex McCarthy

Race-day jerseys more than just fabric It’s 8 p.m. March 26, in a crowded Ballantine Hall classroom, and Laura Bliss and her RideOn teammates are ready to choose their race-day jerseys — their identity — for the Little 500. They qualified 17th, so they get the 17th pick of jerseys. The solid-colored jerseys are long gone, and the secondyear team with the black-andblue shorts is running out of choices for jerseys. When the opportunity to stand out in the field comes around, they pounced on it. “Our strategy this year was more to clash, more to make us stand out more,” Bliss said. “It’s baby blue and hot pink, so it’s going to look like a baby shower exploded or something.” Sixty-six teams change their identities each year at this chaotic meeting, and everybody attends — or else they are docked a two-second penalty. The meeting has been happening for years, but the story of Little 500 race-day jerseys goes much further back. When the race began in the 1950s — more than three decades before the women’s race was created — the jerseys for participating fraternities were hand-stitched by members of sororities, known as Little Five

sweethearts. The jersey creation was the only role women played in the race until the genesis of the women’s race 25 years ago. In the 1990s, a local oversupply of fabric provided a huge change in the way jerseys were supplied on race day. Two local women who owned a seamstress shop took whatever extra fabric they could find and threw it together to make race jerseys. Former Little 500 Race Director Pam Loebig said the jerseys would never cease to surprise once they arrived. “It could be any color combination,” Loebig said. “The Student Foundation would have no idea what colors were showing up, except they always made sure there was a white, yellow and green. Other than that, it was kind of a grab bag.” The white, yellow and green jerseys still remain as the top-tier jerseys come race day, and solid jerseys are almost always the first to go. These hodge-podge jerseys were much appreciated but didn’t make great race jerseys, Loebig said. They didn’t breathe as well as professionally made jerseys and resulted in a lot of hot, sweaty riders. Finally, in 2009, Loebig’s

“Our strategy this year was more the clash, more to make us stand out more. It’s baby blue and hot pink, so it’s going to look like a baby shower exploded or something.” Laura Bliss, rider for RideOn

first year as race director, the ,IU Student Foundation enlisted the services of Canari Cyclewear to provide the riders with high-quality and professional jerseys to wear on race day. Some aspects of the jersey selection never change, though. Fiji still tries to choose purple because it’s the house color. Delta Gamma still tries to grab something black. And the teams and fans alike still plan part of their race-day experience on what happens the night of the jersey-selection meeting. “I know a bunch of teams make shirts for the fans that go along with the jerseys for the race, so that’s the day when your identity basically is born,” Bliss said. — Alex McCarthy

he long journey back for Bolling and the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity began March 26, 2011, the day of the Little 500 Qualifications. That day, Lambda Chi finished its attempt with a time of 2:40.31. Little did the riders know that had they finished 0.09 seconds faster, they would have been in the 61st Little 500 and not in 35th place and out of the running. “Not qualifying for the Little 500 was certainly a

T

learning experience,” Bolling said. “We believe our team was better than our performance at quals last year, so that was certainly disappointing, but our team has responded with a refreshed, motivated attitude.” It was that discontent that drove the Lambda Chi Alpha team to work harder and become better organized. When the riders took the track at Bill Armstrong Stadium for the 2012 quals, their result left no doubt on if they would

be in the race. Lambda Chi Alpha finished in 11th place, its highest in more than 12 years, with a time of 2:26.77, securing a spot in this year’s Little 500. “The Little 500 is an experience our riders and brotherhood will remember for the rest of their lives,” Bolling said. “It will be a great day for Lambda Chi Alpha, and we hope to make the most of it by performing our best in the race.

lpha Epsilon Pi has been in 35 Little 500 races, has had nine top-10 finishes and has had one Little 500 title. All of that history, however, came to an abrupt end Jan. 23, 2008, when IU banned the fraternity for two years for a hazing violation. Four years later, AEPi is back. After failing to qualify for last year’s Little 500, the team finished 19th in this year’s quals, securing its spot after a four-year wait. “It is very important

A

to (Alpha Epsilon Pi) that we are in the race,” Langer said. “It was a very big tradition of our fraternity to race in the Little 500 and a great source of pride to already reestablishing a tradition of excellence in racing.” In fact, Saturday’s race will be a culmination of a long journey for Langer. He is a senior who will be riding in his first Little 500, after his father and uncle rode for the same fraternity in the 1970s. For many members and alumni of

AEPi, hearing their name called Saturday will mark the end of a long and painful gap. “Hearing our name April 21, for me, will be a culmination of a dream I had coming into IU my freshmen year of something I wanted to achieve,” Langer said. “But most importantly, it will really be a comeback for AEPi on the Bloomington campus and to hopefully build on our success every year, making us a top-tier team.”

THETA PHI ALPHA hen Roessler came to IU in fall 2010 to be a member of the school’s swimming and diving team, she never imagined she would be preparing for her first Little 500, only days away. The same can be said for her teammates of Theta Phi Alpha, a first-year sorority that will be competing in its first Little 500 on April 20. Coming from all different backgrounds, the Theta Phi bike team members, much like the entire sorority, have bonded together as their team nears its first race.

W

“The support from my sisters is none other,” Roessler said. “I have always swam and been a part of teams, and we’ve had fans and supporters, but nothing like the support I’ve gotten from the girls. They’ve come to every event and even practice sometimes to cheer us on. It’s an incredible feeling, having 120 friends coming to watch you compete.” Because this is the first time for the members of Theta Phi Alpha, riders and sisters alike, this race will be extra special, a moment marking what they are hoping

could be the start of a great history ahead. Roessler said she and her teammates have embraced their new family and will be ready for the test come Friday. “This sorority started just this year, and for us to build it so well and in such a short amount of time is amazing,” Roessler said. “I think the best way to reward the girls with their hard work is to have a team out there on the track competing with the rest of the organizations because it shows how far we’ve come.”

MELANZANA anderGenugten is a Little 500 champion — just not with her current team. Two years ago, VanderGenugten was a member of the 2010 Little 500-winning Teter squad. However, she fell in love with rock climbing and gave up biking, with the expectation that she would never be riding again. Yet only months ago, VanderGenugten met Rose Mullaney and Christine Ball through mutual friends, and out of chance, the three

V

decided to make their own biking team. Melanzana Cycling was born. “Christine, Rose and I took a training trip to Florida over Christmas break, and that was a great opportunity for us to really get to know each other and create the friendships that we have now,” VanderGenugten said. “Being such a small team, we do pretty much everything together. We’re very fortunate that our friendships have grown beyond cycling.” During this year’s qualifications, Melanzana finished

its first attempt in a flawless effort, posting a 2:50.09 time, ninth overall. No matter what happens on race day, VanderGenugten knows that her teammates will put their hearts on the line on the track and, in her words, ride hard and ride smart. “It hasn’t been a smooth journey for us, but we’ve all put a lot of effort into this year’s race,” VanderGenugten said. “I think we’re stronger because of the challenges that come with being a first-year team.”

CINDER TRACK IS ONE-OF-A-KIND SURFACE KEEPS TRADITION, CHALLENGE FOR RIDERS BY ALEX MCCARTHY alexmcca@indiana.edu

There are other highprofile cycling races in the world. There are other big party weeks and weekends at colleges across the country. There are other big draws for major musical acts. One factor, however, that Little 500 has that similar events don’t is a cinder bike track. It’s the only one of its kind in the world. The race began on a cinder running track in 1951 when cinder running tracks were commonplace. The track at Bill Armstrong Stadium has stayed the same, while many other tracks are now asphalt, concrete, Mondo or any number of different surfaces. This move from cinder running tracks is a good one, Little 500 groundskeeper Steve McCutchen said. “I know in high school ... you’d try to run on (the old cinder tracks), and it was

like one of those nightmare dreams where you felt like everything was in slow motion,” McCutchen said. “You couldn’t move.” Though the move from cinder worked for running tracks, the decision to stay with cinder is necessary for Little 500 races, said Delta Tau Delta Coach Ken Nowakowski. “I think they’ve kept it cinder just because of the tradition of the race,” Nowakowski said. “You wouldn’t be able to run the race the way it is on any other surface.” Nowakowski rode competitively from 1975 to 1989 and was the head coach and race director at the Indianapolis Velodrome for 14 years. The Velodrome is a concrete track complete with steeply banked turns. The Little 500 track is almost completely flat all the way around, making it necessary to slow down around turns.

“If you go full speed into turn three and four,” Nowakowski said, “you’ll end up in Bedford instead of going into the home stretch.” The uneven cinder surface also makes it a little more difficult to maneuver, and the lack of banking makes it tougher to pass riders on the outside during turns, Nowakowski said. During exchanges in the Little 500, skidding on the bikes is necessary. If it were done on a concrete track, the tires would be worn down and the rider would struggle to maintain control of the bike. “Obviously, on the hard surface, you would wear down the tire relatively quickly, and you would lose control of the bike,” Nowakowski said. “Not saying that skidding on a Little Five bike offers you control. No, on the contrary, it does not.” Nowakowski has coached Delta Tau Delta since 2009, so he has become famil-

iar with the racing conditions on race day. He said mishaps and crashes are not only common on the track but are almost expected, and the cinder surface has both its advantages and disadvantages. “If you were to stumble and crash on a concrete surface, it’s a lot less unforgiving than the cinder track,” Nowakowski said. “Although some people would probably question that if they’ve crashed hard and are picking cinders out of their skin.”

Jim Krikham shouts advice to Cutters riders during a heat of Little 500 Miss-N-Out on March 31 at Bill Armstrong Stadium.

GEARING UP FOR RACE DAY THE FINAL DAYS FOR A COACH

Cutters Coach Jim Kirkham has somewhat of a plan for his riders in the final week before race day, but he doesn’t encourage them to deviate too much from their normal schedule. Here are a few tips for riders’ training in the final days and a breakdown of the Cutters’ last week of riding. — Bailey Loosemore MONDAY Exchange day. Since the track is still open, the riders will make sure their exchanges and bikes are still in good order. They’ll do a light day on the bike.

TUESDAY Off day. The riders will either take an off day or a day of active recovery in which they stretch their legs and get their blood flow going if they want, but not anything to stress their hearts.

WEDNESDAY Hard day. Wednesday is the last day at the track, so the riders will do last-minute exchanges, make sure all the bolts are tightened on the bikes and make sure the bikes roll the way they want them to. Then they’ll say goodbye to the track.

THURSDAY Light day. The riders will do maybe an hour on the bike on the road.

FRIDAY Hard day. Riders will do two hours on the bike with increased efforts.

EXTRA TIPS Sneak in a nap. Keep going to bed at about the same time as usual, but naps can be helpful.

SATURDAY Race day. The team will do a road warmup before the race, about an hour-and-a-half road ride, before heading to the track to warm up the riders’ legs.

Do your homework, don’t have school on your mind. Take Vitamin C to ward off any illness.

THE FINAL DAYS FOR A TEAM Unlike the Cutters, Wing It Cycling is taking a completely different approach in the final week compared to its normal training. Team member Abigail Legg said the riders of Wing It have been building their endurance all year through road rides and track workouts, sometimes spending up to five hours on the bike in a day. Now that their endurance is built up, the week leading up to the race will be for resting and maintaining the work they’ve done. Legg and fellow Wing It cyclists Laura Miller and Melissa Moeller said this is what their week looks like. — Trent Stutzman MONDAY The riders will run small intervals to keep their stamina up. They don’t go too hard to make sure they don’t tire themselves leading up to the race.

TUESDAY Similar to Monday, but a little less. Once again, the riders will go hard enough in their intervals to not lose their conditioning but easy enough to not wear out.

WEDNESDAY Take it easy. Each rider might do one or two exercises to make sure her legs properly recover, but the focus is to rest and charge for the race.

THURSDAY Same as Wednesday. FRIDAY Race day

On Little 500 race day, many different cyclists suit up to compete against their rivals and other teams trying to prevent them from achieving victory. But for some participants, the race extends beyond regular competition and delves into family pride. EMILY, PAM AND KIM LOEBIG Emily Loebig is a junior rider for Delta Gamma. The 2012 season will be her second year riding for her sorority. Originally from Cincinnati, Emily first found out about Little 500 when she visited Bloomington during her eighth-grade year to watch her older sister Kim compete as a sophomore in the race for the independent team Cycledelics. The year after, Emily saw her other sister, Pam, join Kim’s team. She then decided she would try cycling herself when she came to IU. “I thought the race was so cool,” she said. “I saw how cool of an experience my sisters had with it, so I definitely wanted to try it out because of them.” Because of the age difference between her and her sisters, Emily was never able to race with either of them. This year, however, Pam is a coach for Delta Gamma. Kim also has helped Emily prepare and will be behind the team’s pit on race day. Emily said that despite her sisters’ great racing knowledge, they’ve taught her more than just biking. “Even more than just riding, they’ve taught me just how great Little 500 is and what you can take from it,” she said. “They look back so fondly on their experience. That’s helped me take everything with a grain of salt and really appreciate the Little

Brothers Kevin (right) and Brian Depasse (left) both ride for Cutters. Although Kevin is the only Depasse brother riding in the race this year, he said he hoped they would get to ride for the Cutters together next year.

“Even more than just riding, they’ve taught me just how great Little 500 is and what you can take from it. They look back so fondly on their experience. 500 for all it has to offer.” The best Kim and Pam did during their racing days in the Little 500 was a fourthplace finish. Emily has already beaten them in that respect, as her Delta Gamma team placed third in her first year of riding back in 2010. Pam said she and Kim want to see her go the next step and be the first Loebig sister to win the race. “Both Kim and I so badly want for Emily to win,” she said. “To see all of her hard work would pay off would be a victory shared among all of us. We definitely want her to win.” Pam, though, has the best Individual Time Trials performance among the sisters, and she admitted she would be OK with Emily staying away from that mark. “I like it that way,” she said amid laughter.

KEVIN AND BRIAN DEPASSE Living up to the standards of the Cutters is challenging enough. For freshman Brian Depasse, the fact that his older brother, Kevin, is their top rider is more than enough motivation. “It does help push me a lot,” Brian said. “I think if I see him in front of me rather than somebody else, I might push a little harder. Yeah, we’re definitely really competitive.” The competition between the Depasse brothers is nothing new. Kevin said they’re always trying to outdo each other in just about everything. Before college, running was the main battle. Back in middle school, Brian fell half a second short of Kevin’s two-mile school record. Kevin has always ragged on his brother for that, but he admitted Brian got the best of him in high-school running times. Now that they’re at IU, the advantage is back with Kevin, for now. This year, he set the fourth-best ITT time and can improve it next year when he comes back as a fifth-year senior. However, Brian said he’s not focused on beating his brother’s time. “I don’t really concentrate on what everybody else does,” he said. “I just try to do my thing and try to improve on what I do. It’s a mark. Maybe not even him being my brother, but him being the best on the team this year. That’s a mark to shoot for, but I wouldn’t say specifically just because of him.” As older brothers often do, Kevin said at first

“I want to correct his every wrong turn. You have to step back sometimes and let him learn by himself.” Kevin Depasse, senior Cutters rider

he tried too hard to help his younger brother learn to bike. “I want to correct his every wrong turn,” he said. “You have to step back sometimes and let him learn by himself. It took me a little bit, but I stepped back and let the Cutter magic do its work. I’ve gotten to know a whole new side of my brother I didn’t even know.” Brian isn’t a top-four rider for the Cutters this year and won’t get a chance to ride in the Little 500. If he could ride next year before Kevin leaves, he said it would be that much more special. “That would mean a lot,” Brian said. “I’m really close with all our teammates, but it would be really special to race with him.” Kevin said he has confidence that Brian can make it next year and become one of the great riders in years to come. “I think he can be as good as he wants to be at this point,” he said. “He’s got a lot of potential and natural ability. As long as he commits, he can be a great Little Fiver.” — Trent Stutzman

Little Five riders deserve our respect The Little 500 is an intramural sport. OK, now that I’ve stated that fact, I’m going to tell you all the reasons why, for the athletes competing in the race itself, it is far from an intramural sport. IU has three types of sports: Division-I, club and intramural. Intramural sports are supposed to be at the bottom of the totem pole. They are the sports that don’t take much practice and are done simply for fun and possibly a T-shirt. If you have been on this campus for more than a year, have ridden in the Little 500 or know someone who has, you’ve seen all the ways this sporting event defies the definition of an intramural sport. Let’s start with the training. Each team has different training regimens. The teams that train the longest begin when school starts in August. Returning riders would probably say they never stop training. The fall season is the lighter of the two training periods. Riders during the fall might ride around 14 hours per week. The spring brings a more intense type of training. The hours themselves might be shorter, but physicality of the training is that of a D-I athlete. The riders give up their spring breaks to stay in Bloomington to train once the track opens. Many teams also give up part of their winter breaks to go on training trips in warmer climates. They give up a lot during Little 500 week itself. When their friends are out partying all day and night, these riders are getting in last-chance training sessions and going to bed early. The financial commitment is also great, more on

CAITLIN URSINI is a senior majoring in journalism.

the level of club sport participation. I’ve seen people spend thousands of dollars on bikes without even knowing for sure if they would ride in the race. Teams pay for coaches, places to stay on training trips and other equipment. Independent teams have to find many ways to obtain funding for this while fraternity and sorority teams might get more financial help from their houses. It is easy to say that this race is being done for more than winning a T-shirt. Winning the Little 500 is the experience of a lifetime. To win the race means to be forever in the history books of the world’s Greatest College Weekend. It means winning one of the most exciting cycling events in the country. It means seeing the hard work and training pay off. The Little 500 is so much more than an intramural sport, but keeping the race in that category makes this weekend everything that it is special for. Those involved race for pride. They don’t race for scholarship money or pro contracts. They race because they love to ride, love IU and love the Little 500. If they were riding for something else, it would never be the same. We all know these riders deserve credit for what they’ve done. They deserve our highest level of respect. — cursini@indiana.edu

A LOOK AT THE FINAL 5 QUALIFIERS

EYES ON THE PRIZE Favorites share their expectations

“We expect Black Key Bulls rookie rider Spencer Brauchla to surprise the field with his incredible endurance this year. He has thrown down some wicked 50-lap sets on the track this preseason, and we expect him to do the same come race day.” Daniel Kinn, Black Key Bulls

“As long as we avoid the wrecks on race day, I feel there is a very good possibility of the Borg-Warner Trophy coming back to Delta Tau Delta. With 2012 being RJ’s and my last race, we are expecting a lot from ourselves come race day, and we feel pretty good about ending the Cutter’s Dynasty.” Nick Lenard, Delta Tau Delta

“After years of building a new and independent team, come April 20th Wing It hopes to finally establish itself as a top contending women’s Little 500 team. We are aiming for a fast, clean and safe race.”

Locally grown, owned & operated since 1980 “After a disappointing finish in 2011, we’re hoping to stay safe and up front for the majority of the race and get positioned as best we can for the final sprint. Most other teams will be trying to do the same, but our depth is a key advantage. We’re hoping for excellent weather and track conditions that will allow us to perform our best.”

Good luck to all the riders!

Will Kragie, Beta Theta Pi

“With only two veteran riders, we strive to get our rookies the experience they need to excel on race day. After qualifying fourth, we hope to use our excellent starting position to help keep us on the lead pack all the way through lap 100!” Marguerite Huber, Alpha Gamma Delta

“Our expectations for this year’s race are the same we’ve had for every previous race. As a part of the Delta Gamma Cycling legacy, we are expected to ride a fair race, work with other teams and show the depth of our team with every member riding at her peak. This year, we’re here to win.” Kayce Doogs, Delta Gamma

OF AN

ANATOMY EXCHANGE

SAME-BIKE EXCHANGE

E

xchanges are what can make or break a Little 500 for any team. If successful, exchanges can keep a team in the race and potentially allow it to vie for the win. When failed, however, they can kill precious seconds of a team’s effort and ruin its race. Precision, speed and coordination are key. Below is a step-by-step guide with rider input about what makes a perfect exchange. — Jordan Littman

TWO-BIKE EXCHANGE Some teams prefer to use a two-bike exchange, instead of with just one bike. This is where a rider waits in the pit with his or her own bike, and waits for the current racer to stop in the pit to change riders.

1 2

On the preceding lap, the rider on the track signals to the rest of the main pack, or peloton, that he or she will be making an exchange. The rider moves to the outside of the field and begins a burnout lap while the new rider takes position at his or her respective pit.

Heading into the final turn before the exchange, the outgoing rider should be well outside the peloton. Once the biker completes the turn, depending on where the pit is, the rider should begin the braking process.

3

At this point, the outgoing rider should be slowing down as he or she nears the pit. The incoming rider should also begin running from his or her dead stop to catch up to the bike and keep momentum during the exchange.

4

Once the outgoing rider enters the pit, the rider should have his or her pedals adjusted so the new rider can start from where the old left off. The outgoing rider also adjusts his or her hands on the handlebar so that the new rider can jump on. The two meet.

5

The new rider puts his or her hands on the handlebar as the outgoing rider jumps off inside the designated area. The incoming rider then hops on as the bike is still moving and begins pedaling to catch back up with the peloton.

The rider moves to the outside of the field and begins a burnout lap while the new rider takes position at his or her respective pit with the new bike. The incoming rider should also take position to hop on the bike for the quickest start possible.

Once the outgoing rider enters the pit, he or she should be slow enough to make an immediate stop. The outgoing rider and the incoming rider meet, and the outgoing rider jumps off the bike in the designated zone to avoid any penalty. The new rider then jumps on the new bike from a dead start and begins pedaling to catch back up with the peloton.

Cyclists wreck during the 2011 Men's Little 500 on Saturday, April 17, 2011, at Bill Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington, Indiana.

The glasses of two wrecked cyclists lay in the infield during the 2011 men's Little 500 bicycle race.

Dodds House cyclists Devin Shively stands after wrecking during the 2011 men's Little 500 bicycle race.

CYCLING THROUGH TURN 3 Turn three of the track at Bill Armstrong Stadium has long been a problem for riders competing in the Little 500. There were at least three major wrecks in the turn in 2011. The IDS caught up with fourth-year Sigma Chi rider and Riders’ Council member Andrew Morrow to find out why. INDIANA DAILY STUDENT Do you think turn three is more dangerous than the other turns? MORROW I would definitely agree that it’s the most treacherous turn out there, and it’s like that for a couple of reasons. This season it’s been pretty tore up, they’ve never been able to work it down, there always seems to be some bad tread lines. Then when they do get it fixed, it washes out the track, and you get a lip on the concrete railing. Then, when it dries out, it gets pretty dusty. Not just this year, but all years, when you’re on the back stretch and people are “burning out,” (speeding up after an exchange) people are getting up to speed and pull-

ing out of the pack, but once you hit that corner you kind of stop pedaling and lose that momentum. When you’re getting up to speed, you can’t keep up that speed through the turn. IDS Do you have any plans to deal with turn three? MORROW In (Individual Time Trials) there’s definitely strategy to it. My coach tells me, and I know a lot of other coaches tell their riders to do this, when you have a lot of speed on the back stretch, stay a bike length or two out, and take a tangent to the curve and hit the apex, and you can continue spinning, you don’t have to stop pedaling.

IDS Are riders more cautious on turn three? MORROW I think people go into turn three more cautious just because of what’s happening and what they’ve seen from turn three. That just adds to why it’s even more important to stay in front, the less experienced riders struggle more, and you don’t want to get caught up in that. IDS Do you forsee turn three being a problem this year? MORROW It’s definitely possible. It was a bad place to be in Miss-N-Out. We saw a couple of bad wrecks in the semifinals. They usually do a good job maintaining it during the race, I don’t really foresee it being a problem.

DELTA GAMMA

he third-most successful team in women’s Little 500 history, Delta Gamma experienced some ups and downs early in their history. From 1989 to 1994, DG registered four topfive finishes but also didn’t qualify twice. Since 2000, however, they have consistently been a top threat. In that span, DG has placed in

T

the top six eight times, including a win in 2008. They have also placed third the past two years. DG’s top rider, Kayce Doogs, finished fifth in the 2011 Miss-N-Out and second this year. She also placed 10th in last year’s ITTs and third in 2012. Junior Emily Loebig said her team’s closeness is key. “We’ve had such a great

bond between everyone on this team, she said. “It’s easy to get sick of people that you spend a lot of time with, but these girls are my best friends, and I think that bond we have is really something special. I think that helps us a lot to trust each other to do the best we can on race day.

BLACK KEY BULLS

n only their seventh year of existence, the Black Key Bulls have wasted no time vaulting themselves into a yearly threat to take home the Borg-Warner Trophy. Although they haven’t won the race yet, the Bulls have placed in the top 10 every time they have competed, with a peak of third place

I

in 2007. Team captain Stephen Mis is confident 2012 can be the year the Bulls finally break through. “Every year, we just keep getting better and better, Mis said. “We’ve got a team completely devoted to winning this year. Everybody’s really ready to race, and it’s a wonderful

thing to be able to represent the Black Key Bulls. The Bulls were the only men’s team this year to send three members to the semifinals of Miss-N-Out. Those three riders — Daniel Kinn, Rex Rafferty and Brant Powell — all placed in the top 20 of Individual Time Trials.

M

span, including the past two. To grab their third consecutive victory, fouryear rider and Cocaptain Lauren Gowdy said her team must have teamwork and confidence. “Right now, we have four really strong riders, she said. “As long as we go out there and do what we know how to do as far as

riding goes, I think hink we will be successful. The four riders ders Gowdy alluded to, including herself, Lisa Hutcheson, Emma Caughlin in and Ashton DeHanhn, all recorded ITT times in the top 15. Hutcheson and d Caughlin placed second and fifth in Miss-N-Out, respectively. spectively.

CUTTERS

he Cutters are the prime players of the top dogs. Although they’ve only been in existence since 1984, they have won a record 12 races. The next closest is eight by Delta Chi, the fraternity from which the Cutters originated. They have also won five consecutive Little 500 races dating back to 2007, another unprecedent-

T

ed mark. In 28 total races, the Cutters have placed in the top ten 26 times, with their worst performance resulting in a 12th-place finish. Their average placement per year is 3.54, a best among all current teams. Senior rider Kevin Depasse said he is thankful to represent one of the most successful teams in Little

500 history. “It’s an awesome feeling to be behind that five (consecutive) years and 12 wins, he said. “It’s an amazing feeling knowing how many awesome guys have come through this team and affected it in various ways. On race day, you can feel all the passion and all the rides that they went on.

1 MEN’S RACE

ROWS

Each year, three jersey colors are designated. The white jersey goes to the winner of cumulative Spring Series event points, yellow is worn by last years’ winners and green is worn by the pole winners.

COLOR CODES THE RACE The women’s race is 100 laps, which is equivalent to 25 miles, while the men’s race is 200 laps, or roughly 50 miles. Both races are held on the quarter-mile cinder track in Bill Armstrong Stadium. Entrants are given one-speed Schwinn bicycles. Teams are made up of as many as four riders. The riders treat the race much like a running relay. When a rider is tired, they exchange the bicycle with a teammate. Any full-time IU undergraduate can ride in the Little 500. PITS Each team will be assigned a pit along the outside of the track according to its qualification position. These pits are approximately 16 feet wide and 6 feet deep. All exchanges and bicycle repairs must be made within these boundaries. An exception is when adjacent teams are exchanging simultaneously; one team may step beyond the restraining line to complete its exchange. Each team is allowed to have a pit crew not exceeding two persons

— one in the pit and one on the infield with a bicycle.

THE LINEUP The order of the starting lineup will be determined by the qualification times. The teams will be grouped into rows of three, starting with the No. 1 pole position team on the inside of the track. All No. 1 riders will be mounted and ready five minutes before the pace lap, after which time no crew member will be allowed on the inside of the track. PENALTIES Teams guilty of violating these rules shall be penalized no more than 20 seconds. This time will be spent in the penalty box located near the starting line. A black flag given to the team shall indicate that a penalty has been imposed. Penalties include: » Impeding another team, including riders and pit crew: 10 to 20 seconds » Failing to observe flags: two seconds » Illegal exchange from bicycle A to bicycle B: two seconds

» Using more than three pits for an exchange: two seconds » Unsportsmanlike conduct, depending on severity: five to 20 seconds

CHANGING RIDERS Teams will be allowed to change riders as often as they wish, but they must change a minimum of 10 times in the men’s race and five times in the women’s race. Each bike exchange must begin in front of the pit of the team concerned, and it must be completed by the time the rider taking over has reached the far limits of the next pit on the right. Should the incoming rider fail to start the exchange in front of the correct pit, he or she must continue around for one more lap. If the rider backs up, the team will be subject to penalty. The outgoing rider may use the preceding pit to run and gain momentum for the exchange, but the actual exchange of the bike must take place in the correct pit area.
