FEAST BAKERY CAFÉ This café is known for its tamales, but also try the meatloaf sandwich served with sweet potato wedges. Finish the meal with one of the fabulous freshly-baked pastries.

THE TROJAN HORSE To truly sample Greek food, order Combination Plate I or II. Combination Plate II is perfect for vegetarians. For dessert, try baklava ice cream or ambrosia, the dessert of the gods.

MY THAI CAFE For an appetizer, order the fresh Thai basil rolls. The café has an excellent Thai flavor. Appealing entrées include Gaeng-GraRee (Yellow Curry) and Pad-Kee-Mao, a noodle dish with bell peppers, tomatoes and eggs.

GRAZIE! ITALIAN EATERY Try the interesting appetizer of Parmesan truffle chips or antipasti per due. Have the incredible Tuscan rigatoni, the cream and crimson manicotti or the hearty traditional meat lasagna as an entrée.

CHAPMAN’S RESTAURANT AND BAR Begin with the savory roasted pumpkin bisque followed by the satisfying grilled center cut filet of beef, served with whipped potatoes and sautéed asparagus. For a healthier dessert, try honey fig poached pears.

MOTHER BEAR’S PIZZA No restaurant list is complete without mentioning Mother Bear’s Pizza. The deep-fried polpettes make a perfect addition to its beloved breadsticks. Great pizzas include the Treasure of Monte Cristo and the Dixie Two-Step.

SCENIC VIEW RESTAURANTThe crab cake mac is an unusually delicious appetizer. It is a combination of macaroni and cheese with crab cakes. The prime steak and broccoli stir-fry is a wonderful entrée option.

O BLOOMINGTON BREWS These local brews aren’t made for beer pong. PHOTO AND STORY BY CHARLES SCUDDER | cscudder@indiana.edu

ne of the best ways to make your apartment just a little classier is to leave behind the Keystone cans and turn to a better brew. Here’s the lowdown on the top beers of Bloomington.

AFFORDABLE: UPLAND BREWING CO. WHEAT ALE — $7.99 FOR A SIX-PACK OF 12-OZ. BOTTLES

MID-RANGE: BLOOMINGTON BREWING CO. QUARRYMAN PALE ALE — $12.95 FOR A HALF-GALLON GROWLER

PRICEY: CUTTERS BREWING COMPANY EMPIRE IMPERIAL STOUT — $13.99 FOR A 22-OZ. BOTTLE

When it comes to wheat ales, I’m more of a German hefeweizen fan. Upland Wheat, however, does do a good job of taking a classic style and making it available for beginning hopheads. Light, citrusy, aromatic and served with a fresh orange slice, Upland Wheat is great for relaxing on a hot afternoon or for any beer drinker on a budget.

Hoosiers sure know how to make a pale ale. My favorite pale ales are made right here in Indiana, and one of the best is made on 10th Street by Blooming Brewing Company. Quarryman is fresh, crisp and full of hop flavor and aroma, with just enough bitterness. I enjoy it on tap at Nick’s English Hut during a basketball game, but you can also buy it by the growler-full at Lennie’s Brewpub.

Cutters is the smallest and newest brewery in town, but it’s already begun to establish itself as able to play with the big dogs when it comes to making quality beer. The Empire Imperial Stout is well worth the price. It is black, malty and thick with wonderful chocolaty notes. Cutters easily makes the best stout in town.

UNION STREET APARTMENTS (4) Though they’re a little farther than many students might like, Union Street Apartments offer the nicest suites on campus, and each apartment has a kitchen, bathroom and washer and dryer. The biggest downside, besides being far from classes, is the complex’s price.

EIGENMANN (3) With the Hoosier Café and Store and the recent move of IU Outdoor Adventures, there’s more reason to go there than many remember. We recommend this dorm for people who like a good hike — either with a backpack to campus or a tent on an Outdoor Adventure.

Benefits: Music, Movies and More; apartments instead of dorms; Union Street Market. Distance: From IMU .75 miles From Assembly Hall 1.1 miles From Sample Gates 1 mile

Benefits: Outdoor Adventures, IU Bookstore, lofted bed capability, Hoosier Café and Store. Distance: From IMU .83 miles From Assembly Hall 1.2 miles From Wells Library .4 miles

4

E

FOSTER (3) Much like Forest, Foster lays somewhere in the middle of the residence centers list. Though the dorms are nothing to write home about, Foster does have a center building with Gresham Food Court, a late-night recreation venue and an ice cream shop. Benefits: Gresham Food Court, near the Kelley School of Business, Global Village and Foster International LLCs. Distance: From IMU .67 miles From Wells Library .45 miles From Sample Gates .96 miles

N

S W

3

Foster BRISCOE (4) Currently being renovated, Briscoe is receiving an impressive facelift and will provide suites instead of dorms. This gives students an apartment-like feel with more privacy than the other residence centers. It’s by far the best choice of the neighborhood. Benefits: Music, Movies and More; game room; suites; exercise facility. Distance: From IMU .85 miles From Wells Library .67 miles From Sample Gates 1.1 miles

Briscoe

4

MCNUTT (2) McNutt is the Teter of the north with no impressive amenities. While it’s a smidgen closer to campus than Briscoe, it doesn’t have Briscoe’s suites or Foster’s food court. We recommend choosing one of the other two. Benefits: Hoosier Café and Store, Kelley Living Learning Center offices. Distance: From IMU .71 miles From Wells Library .55 miles From Sample Gates .98 miles

McNutt

13 WILLKE (3) Though Willkie has the best C-store on campus, it’s far from most central buildings, lacks a sense of community and is a little overpriced. If you’re looking for a quiet stay, consider it, but otherwise, it’s a boring option.

Eigenmann

Benefits: C-store; Music, Movies and More; no resident assistants; laundry facilities in apartments. Distance: From IMU .78 miles From Wells Library .56 miles From Sample Gates .98 miles

3

Willke TETER (2) Without a food court, basketball court or C-store, Teter usually gets the short end of the stick in dorm choices. But it does have one thing Wright doesn’t: air conditioning. We think that’s something, but it’s not a deal-breaker. If choosing between the two, pick Wright.

Union

Benefits: Close to Wright food court and C-store, restroom renovations, RPS library. Distance: From IMU .57 miles From Wells Library .25 miles From Sample Gates .82 miles

Forest Teter

2

Wright

FOREST (3) It’s not great, it’s not bad — it’s just in the middle. Forest Residence Center has a few amenities that other dorms don’t have, but no food courts or cafés. It’s not the farthest from campus, but it’s not the closest. So, we won’t rag on Forest, but we won’t promote it, either.

Read

Benefits: Music, Movies and More; game room. Distance: From IMU .7 miles From Wells Library .75 miles From Sample Gates 1.1 miles

3

WRIGHT (4) Wright has basically all the amenities a student can ask for, including a food court, sports facilities and movie rentals. Though it doesn’t have air conditioning, it’s the most central dorm on campus and makes up for what it lacks two-fold. We say Wright should be in your top three choices.

READ (4) If Read had full suites instead of shared bathrooms between two dorm rooms, it’d be the best residence center on campus. It has three food places; a Movies, Music and More; and a great location, especially for Jacobs School of Music students.

Benefits: C-store and food court in dorm; Music, Movies and More; basketball, tennis and volleyball courts. Distances: From IMU .49 miles From Wells Library .15 miles From Sample Gates .74 miles

Benefits: El Bistro; Hoosier Café; Landes Dining Room; Music, Movies and More; shared bathrooms. Distance: From IMU .48 miles From Wells Library .37 miles From Sample Gates .66 miles

4

4

COLLINS (3) Collins has perhaps the strongest stereotype/reputation of the dorms, but this residence center offers the best sense of community and best location, as well as a dining hall. It is a little more expensive, but if you’re looking to make 500 friends, Collins is the place for you.

Collins

Benefits: Edmonson Dining Hall, student programs, close to center of campus. Distance: From IMU .24 miles From Wells Library .44 miles From Sample Gates .45 miles

Campus snacks BY CASEY ENGELMAN | cengelma@indiana.edu

1. SUGAR & SPICE They have classic coffee drinks and cupcakes piled high with frosting. But when in need of something snackish, the best bet is a slice of pumpkin, apple walnut or banana bread for only 89 cents each.

There is rarely a line at this café. Grab freshLY baked goods from the local Scholar’s Inn like blueberry or cranberry-orange scones for $2.75 a piece, or a fresh cookie and milk for $3.

2. BAJA FRESH

6. FRESHENS

This centrally-located fast food spot can get you something spicy and salty quick. Go for the chips and salsa for $1.99 or the queso and chips for $3.29. Throw in a side of guacamole with either one for $1.49 and you’ll have a fiesta en route to class.

This new corner spot in the Union has a few options, from fresh fruit and vegetable cups to parfaits with white chocolate chips. It also has gourmet popcorn in caramel and toffee flavors, ranging in price from $1.29 to $3.89 depending on bag size.

3. SAKURA AT THE MARKET

7. STARBUCKS

This new addition to the IMU’s Market has a hidden gem when it comes to snacking. Amidst the sushi rolls and teriyaki bowls, Sakura has boxes of edamame available for $3.19. Pop it in the microwave before digging in, and dip the pods in soy sauce for some protein-packed bites.

4. DUNN MEADOW CAFÉ

STEPH LANGAN | IDS

Beneath Burger King is where this haunt lies. Rather than waiting for a make-your-own sandwich or fussing with the soup ladles, grab a bag of pita chips and a few scoops of hummus from the salad bar.

9. PIZZA HUT AT THE MARKET The classic grab-and-go snack, the breadsticks in the Union are notoriously easy. At $2.09 a box, this familiar taste will rarely let you down as it’s dunked into marinara.

10. VENDING MACHINE !n the event that lines are far too long or change is all you’ve got, the vending machine is a safe standby. It may not be as exotic as edamame or freshly baked banana bread, but sometimes when you’re in a time crunch, Smart Pop can really hit the spot.

Apart from its pastry offerings, this classic college café has some graband-go items as well. Packages of dried mangoes and apples are available near the cashier for $2.75 each, and could pair nicely with a bag of glazed nuts for $1.50.

8. FRIENDS OF ART BOOKSHOP This spot is a good bet if you’ve got time in between classes in Woodburn Hall or the School of Fine Arts. The top pick is the “Go Picnic” — a grown-up Lunchable of sorts. For $5 try the sunbutter and crackers, salami and cheese, or turkey jerky and cheese options.

Groceries around town

A After moving out of the dorms and into a house, something suddenly becomes a very true reality for every college student: finances. From utility bills to monthly rent payments to that undying desire for late-night pizza, it can all get hard to keep track of. One thing that stays constant is the need for food. With three meals a day and mid-morning and midnight snacks, the cash required for culinary endeavors can seem to disappear fast. But with some consideration and an eye for thrift, any student can still have some bonus cash in

the budget to blow at the end of the month. Kroger, Bloomingfoods and Sahara Mart each carry some of the same groceries, ones that could be considered staples for the college diet. And while one might guess that bargains only exist at one location, each store has some values to bring to the table. If in the market for produce, particularly apples, head to Bloomingfoods. Not only are the offerings fresher and more diverse, but they’re also locally grown and subsequently cheaper at $1.39 a pound. Another staple to stock up on in the bulk section here is rice, starting at $1.39 a pound. They also have six-packs of freshly made pitas from Falafels for $4. Sahara Mart on Indiana Avenue has a few hidden values as well. If in need of some greens, get heads of romaine

lettuce here for a dollar a piece. Health cereals like Kashi are also lower in price here than at Kroger. And, when you’re in the mood for some chicken, opt for Sahara Mart as well — six thighs of local Amish chicken go for $4.40 and four breasts of local Amish chicken for $5. Many of the remaining groceries investigated — bananas, frozen vegetables, pasta and sauce, eggs, milk and sandwich bread — were cheapest at Kroger. The greatest difference in price existed for eggs, with a Kroger dozen averaging a dollar less than the other two stores visited. There is one staple that has yet to be claimed — cereal. Favorites like Special K and Cheerios can start to get pricey at $4.49 a box at Kroger. This might seem reasonable, that is until you buy your cereal with your pharmaceuticals.

BY CASEY ENGELMAN cengelma@indiana.edu

CVS frequently has specials on many cereal brands, applying a two boxes for $5 deal to many popular varieties on its shelves. And while prices differ between each store, each has added value in its members program. Bloomingfoods offers patrons the chance to buy shares of the co-op for $90 a year per household and grants discounts to members on all items certain days of the week. Sahara Mart and Kroger have similar member programs, bringing the price of necessary foodstuffs even more within reach. Whether a dedicated locavore hunting for the most prime produce in town or a student with a packed schedule and minimal time to shop, strategic stops can save you a buck or two when filling your pantry shelves.

A NIGHT OUT Worried you don't have enough cash for entertainment? Here are a few venues with events for any budget. BY BRAD SANDERS | bradsand@indiana.edu

RUSSIAN RECORDING The best live sound in town is at this recording studio, which sporadically books both national and local acts. $5-15

INDIANA MEMORIAL UNION A whole slew of student sketch comedy troupes turn various rooms in the Union into laugh factories on the weekends. Free

IVY TECH JOHN WALDRON ARTS CENTER A wide range of local groups take the stage at the Waldron, and the atmosphere of the room lends itself well to raucousness. $15, though some performances are free

THE BISHOP There’s hardly a night this bar venue doesn’t have a few awesome bands on stage, and the beers on tap alone are worth the trip. $5-15 BUSKIRK-CHUMLEY THEATER For something a bit more refined (and seated), this Kirkwood institution regularly brings old-guard performers, such as Mavis Staples and Steve Earle, to town. $15+ IDS FILE PHOTO

Liturgy performs July 8, 2011, at Russian Recording. Although its primary function is as a recording studio, Russian Recording occasionally holds performances.

Volunteering Life in Bloomington is more than IU's campus. Here are a few ways to give back to the greater community. BY MORGAN SMITH | smithmol@indiana.edu

Bet Savich started her position as director of the City of Bloomington Volunteer Network 15 years ago. Big Brothers Big Sisters allowed Savich to gain a greater appreciation for mentoring kids. Savich started her personal experience through the School Bigs Program in 2002 and continues to serve as a big sister. “I started to realize the

w

impact people had in my life and grew more passionate about it over the years, Savich said. “I encourage individuals to look up where they really want to volunteer, so they’re meeting their needs at the same time as the community, Savich said. “It’s a great way to explore their major and to get more experience through volunteering.

here should I start looking if I want to be more involved in the Bloomington community? Go to bloomington.in.gov/volunteer to search for more opportunities from the Volunteer Network.

17 THESE GROUPS NEED YOUR HELP WONDERLAB Volunteers make visitors feel comfortable and encourage them to explore the handson exhibits and experiences. Contact: Diane David Email: volunteer@wonderlab. org, 812-337-1337, ext. 20 Website: wonderlab.org WonderLab offers flexible scheduling throughout day PALS Volunteers help children and adults with disabilities learn how to ride horses. Contact: Taryn Lyman Email: taryn@palstherapy.org, 812-336-2798, ext. 5 Website: palstherapy.org It is better to volunteer at PALS for afternoons and evenings (11a.m./12p.m. to 3:30/5 or 5 to 7:30/8:30 Monday-Thursday). BLOOMINGTON COMMUNITY BICYCLE PROJECT No prior experience is

necessary. After volunteers are done volunteering, they can choose a bike from our plethora of donated bicycles and take as long or little time as they want to build their own bicycle for free. Contact: Edwin Fallwell Email: Bloomington.Bike. Project@gmail.com Website: bloomingtonbikeproject.com Bloomington Community Bicycle Projects is best for afternoon volunteering. INTERFAITH WINTER SHELTER The shelter needs volunteers to offer hospitality and a warm, safe place to sleep for its homeless guests. Email: IWS20112012@gmail. com Website: interfaithwintershelter.org Overnight shifts are best for the Interfaith Winter Shelter. Orientation training is often required to volunteer.
