It’s a little difficult to write the introduction to the last IDW Angel stories without getting sad. We’ve gotten used to this world and become very fond of its demons, monsters, and weird, creeping thingies. You spend all day with characters like these and they grow on you. Their stories get woven into moments you never expected and you find yourself thinking about them when you’re at dinner or cleaning the floor. They become part of your life. You know them. Not having the next story to work on feels… strange. Like we’re missing something but forgetting what it was. But this is not a wake. It’s a celebration, a last hurrah, and I think we owe Captain Forehead and his crew the biggest sendoff we can manage. Which is why we have all these amazing Angel comics alumni in this special issue. Ever wondered what Harmony’s blog would be like? Wish you’d gotten to know more about Gunn before he met Angel? Mused about Angel’s relationship with L.A.? Seen Fred and Wesley on a date? Or maybe you wonder about all the might-haves, the roads not taken, the other stories that could have been. So did we, and thus the Angel: Yearbook was born. Working on Angel for the last two years has been a dream come true. Whether it was editing or writing, getting to be involved in a universe you love is what everyone wishes for and rarely gets. And the Whedonverse? Come on. You can do just about anything in it. And yet, it’s not some pointless vamp brooding or lackluster shock horror. It’s layered, it’s relatable, it’s funny and sweet. It will break your heart, again and again. And leave you wondering: when did a story become so damn important that I’m still upset a week later? That kind of storytelling is, to me, a kind of magic. It’s rare, it’s beautiful, and it touches people even after it’s off the air. As I write this, we’ve approved Angel #44 and Spike #8 to print. This Yearbook is nearly finished. It’s been quite a ride and we can only hope that we’ve added something to this world and told stories that mattered along the way. The characters deserve no less and neither do the fans. So, I’ll just say: goodbye, Angel. Time to get back to work.
