EVERYTHING NEW ABOUT THE TRANSFORMERS IS NOW OLD! The ROBOTS IN DISGUISE Kick-Start The Industrial Revolution withTRANSFORMERS: EVOLUTIONS: Hearts of Steel! eginning in June, The TRANSFORMERS arrive in a new era–an era from yesteryear. What forms would fan-favorite AUTOBOTS and DECEPTICONS disguise themselves in if they existed in different time periods? IDW Publishing explores this very concept in their new TRANSFORMERS line of comics, Transformers: Evolutions. These comics will feature special out-of-continuity tales that focus on the ROBOTS IN DISGUISE in various eras throughout history.
B
In the first issue of the five-part debut miniseries, “Hearts of Steel,” writer Chuck Dixon and artist Guido Guidi introduce the ‘bots to the Industrial Revolution, where a charismatic hammer-man named John Henry discovers that an unusual steam engine turns out to be “more than meets the eye,” and is actually an alien robot named BUMBLEBEE. Before he can process this information, the DECEPTICONS attack–disguised as tanks, trains and walking engines. Is this all part of a larger scheme by STARSCREAM? And if so, will the other AUTOBOTS arrive in time to stop his nefarious plans?
The uniqueness of this story’s setting provided long-time TRANSFORMERS artist Guidi an opportunity to re-imagine and develop new designs for the characters while remaining true to the original concepts of the most popular TRANSFORMERS. We managed to wrench Guido’s sketch pencil out of his hand and pull him away from his drafting table long enough to ask him a few questions about tackling this new–yet old–“evolution” of TRANSFORMERS.

characters–either AUTOBOT or DECEPTICON–which was your favorite to redesign for this unique time period, and
GUIDO GUIDI: Well, I have been a huge TRANSFORMERS fan since the start of the series back during the '80s when I was a kid... and today I still collect them! In late 2001, while I was trying to break into the U.S. comic field, I couldn't resist submitting my TRANSFORMERS artwork. And, it worked. Since then I have always been working on various TRANSFORMERS projects (and I hope to continue this way)... I have got my hobby and job all in one–I couldn't ask for more! IDW: What sort of research was required in order to accurately design the AUTOBOTS and DECEPTICONS so that their appearance was appropriate to that of the Industrial Revolution period? IDW
GUIDI: I spent a lot of time doing research. I almost exclusively used the Internet–looking for which character most challenging? [Preliminary sketches only.
