ACRAMENT FOR FLUTE AND CHIME
idyll press
PROGRAM NOTE Sacrament: The visible form of an invisible grace. PERFORMANCE NOTES 1. Sacrament is to be played by one performer. 2. The pitch of the chime must be C4. 3. The chime is never to be dampened after being struck, except at the very end - this will help signal the end of the piece for the audience. 4. The numerical values placed above the staves (for example, 20") indicate durations of time, in seconds. Although perfect accuracy may be difficult to achieve in a performance, there are two aspects of these values that the performer should strive to portray: A) A consistent increment of time between the first three chime strokes, in the effort to establish an objective and mechanical soundscape for the flute to explore. B) The relative proportions of the smaller time durations (those smaller than 20"). 5. In measures 3 and 4 the performer is asked to sing and play the flute at the same time. Depending on the vocal range of the performer, however, the Db indicated may or may not be easily sung. Although the written pitch is preferred, the performer may elect to transpose the sung pitch into another octave if it allows for a more fluid performance. molto fltz. 6. The notation non vib. indicates where the performer is to play the written pitches while, as evenly as possible, transitioning from a non vibrato (or straight tone) sound to a fast flutter tongue. 7. In measure 65, and many other measures throughout the piece, smaller noteheads are found below certain pitches that are to be played as harmonics ( ). The smaller notehead indicates the fingered pitch that should be overblown (the result is a series of alternating pitches that vary slightly in timbre). If there is not a small notehead below a harmonic pitch the performer may choose the fingering that most readily produces the written harmonic on their instrument. 8. In order to quickly pick up the mallet in measure 152, the performer will need to use this fingering:

9. The final pitch of the piece should be bent 31 cents flat. The reason for this is that the 7th partial in the harmonic series (as heard in the sound of the chime) is naturally 31 cents flat. The performer, therefore, must match their pitch to the sound of the chime in an effort to create the illusion of the flute's sound disappearing into the sound of the chime. RECOMMENDED STAGE SETUP Percussion mallet on a music stand Performer Single chime suspended from a percussion stand
