T

Welcome

o all of you returning to Idyllwild Jazz in the Pines festival, we’re glad to have you back, and to all of you who are here for the first time, a big WELCOME. You’re in for two days of continuous music from three different venues — how good is that? You can choose the French Quarter where you’ll have the chance to really get your groove on with some good old blues and rock sounds or just relax for a moment in the shade with a cool one brought to you by a top-notch waitress. Or, choose Stephens Recital Hall, more familiarly known as the “Barn,” to hear the sounds often referred to as “straight-ahead” jazz. You’ll have an opportunity to enjoy small groups or combos playing in a small venue with indoor seating and outdoor shaded seating for overflow crowds. Finally, is our largest venue, the Main Stage, an open air amphitheatre where you’ll sit under billowing parachutes to enjoy a wide variety of sounds. To kick off the festival weekend, we have the traditional Patron’s Dinner and Dance, with a new look. For those of you who are lucky enough to enjoy this great party, you’ll be treated to a “Taste of Idyllwild,” with three of our fine local restaurants, the Gastrognome, Café Aroma and the Mountain, providing the appetizers for the cocktail party to begin the evening. Entertainment for both listening and dancing pleasure will feature the Idyllwild Arts Alumni Trio of Four with our special guest, Jeff Hamilton and his trio. Under a cloud of colorful butterflies, you will feast on a gourmet dinner with fine wines and be able to dance the night away. This year’s Idyllwild Jazz in the Pines festival, in its 18th year, will bring you many familiar musical groups and yet there will be a lot that is new to enjoy. Our featured headliner on Saturday, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, is returning to the Hill after an absence of five years, and on Sunday,

Idyllwild Jazz in the Pines, 2011 - Page 3 one of the headliners, Gordon Goodwin and his Little Phat Band, come to you for the first time. Also appearing on Sunday is an Idyllwild favorite new to this venue, Lisa Haley and the Zydekats, including former Idyllwild resident Chuck Alvarez on guitar. Saturday’s program on the Main Stage, emceed by KKJZ 88.1 FM’s own Bubba Jackson, will open with the award-winning Idyllwild Arts Alumni Trio of Four and be followed by two 2011 Grammy-nominated jazz vocalists, Denise Donatelli and Gregory Porter. Then, as a lead-in to the performance of BBVD, three ladies who perform the songs of the Motown era, The Oreo Divaz, take the stage … are you ready to dance? As a finale, Cab Calloway receives a much-deserved tribute from Big Bad Voodoo Daddy with “How Big Can You Get?” — the title of the group’s eighth album. The Main Stage lineup on Sunday begins with Vortex, the gospel group that got everyone on their feet last year. Following are four groups that are designed to provide a great variety of sounds that will certainly have you clapping your hands and dancing. Deacon Jones and his Blues Revue, featuring an 11-year-old guitarist, will get you in the mood. Then, Lisa Haley with her blue violin will have her Zydekats playing some of the hottest Zydeco sounds you’ll ever hear. Gordon Goodwin, world-renowned composer and arranger, brings a smaller version of his Big Phat Band, the Little Phat Band, to the Main Stage to keep the party going. Lastly, Jose Rizo, also from KKJZ 88.1 FM introduces his Mongorama band, who have resurrected the sounds of Mongo Santamaria for your Latin listening and dancing pleasure. Familiar to attendees from the past is Robin Adler and her Mutts of the Planet, doing the songs of Joni Mitchell in the Barn on Saturday. On keyboards for Robin is Barnaby Finch, local jazz icon. Barnaby will be predominantly featured with several groups in this venue both Saturday and Sunday. Look for him and listen when you hear See Welcome, page 21

It’s logistics

ithout Ted Cummings, the Idyllwild Jazz Festival wouldn’t go on — it’s all about logistics! Besides the facilities set-up and maintenance of the grounds, Ted organizes security, oversees communications, parking, transportation and stage management to name a few. He helps his wife, Joyce, our Vendor

Ted Cummings, right, with Richard Collins during last year’s Jazz in the Pines festival.

Chair, organize the vendors and the food court. In order to have these vendors and the food providers, Ted procures licenses and permits from the County. Whew! What a job! If you see Ted, who has been involved in the festival off and on for the past several years, thank him in person, for without him we wouldn’t have this great experience.

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy returns to Idyllwild By Marshall Smith Idyllwild Town Crier Staff Reporter

“W

BBVD in 2005

PHOTO TOWN CRIER FILE

e are a visual band,” said Big Bad Voodoo Daddy (BBVD) pianist Josh Levy, in a bit of an understatement, since the strut, swagger and sashay of this cool-cat swing band is a big part of their draw. BBVD returns to Jazz in the Pines to once again parade down the aisle as headliners at the festival’s 18th iteration. BBVD is a swing revival band, born of the renaissance of swing in the 1990s. But unlike many that have faded, BBVD and its musical and performance panache have come

to dominate the category of bands you have to both see and hear. “We’re a storytelling band,” said Levy and there’s a lot of storytelling when BBVD takes the stage and literally tips their hats to their progenitors. Levy has local roots. His mother, Jane, is one of the premier group of Tahquitz climbing icons from the late 1950s and early 1960s and lives now in Idyllwild. Levy and his sister were ISOMATA (Idyllwild School of Music and the Arts) summer students and Levy attended the first music camp at Buckhorn. He participated in jazz workshops at Idyllwild Arts in the late 1980s. “It was pretty mind-blow-

ing as a kid sitting in front of a big band during those summers,” he remembered, “and hearing the wonderful sounds of musicians practicing deep in the woods.” Levy has been part of BBVD for 15 years since he got a call from childhood friend and now band mate Glen “The Kid” Marhevka whom he had met as a student in honor bands in the 1980s. “It’s been an incredible ride,” said Levy. BBVD’s ride began in Ventura, Calif., when Scotty Morris (lead vocals and guitar) and Kurt Sodergren (drums and percussion), the band’s two original members, formed what would become the seven-man (nine when touring) swing revival

band known as “America’s favorite little big band.” The band got its name after Morris met blues guitar legend Albert Collins at a concert. According to the story, Collins signed Morris’ poster “To Scotty, the big bad voodoo daddy,” and a band, a style and a look were born. BBVD has appeared for three U.S. presidents, is a staple on the concert scene, appears at bowl halftime shows, in the movie “Swingers” (as themselves),

with major U.S. symphony orchestras and on television (notably the “Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and “Dancing with the Stars”). Their most recent CD, “How Big Can You Get? The Music of Cab Calloway,” was released in 2009. They are recording their twelfth CD this year. You may not need seats for their Holmes Amphitheater appearance, since you may be on your feet for most of their set. Be there or be square.

As a single mother, she waited until her sons were out of high school. “It was enough working a day job,” she remembered. “I couldn’t see going out to gigs at night until the boys were raised. So I tabled my career.” Once her boys were old enough, Donatelli began honing her vocal chops with a steady threenight-a-week, two-year gig at the downtown RitzCarlton in Atlanta while still holding her day job with Turner Broadcasting System. Her first CD, released in 2005, “In the Company of Friends,” received critical plaudits and earned her a Blue Chip Jazz CD Award. Not long after, Donatelli and Keezer began working together. The result of that collaboration, Donatelli’s second CD, 2008’s “What Lies Within,” received strong critical notice. Lisa and her Kats storm festival

By Marshall Smith Idyllwild Town Crier Staff Reporter

irst there’s distant thunder. Then the wind picks up. Then, with the darkening clouds, the humidity begins to climb. Soon crackles of lightning begin charging the air. And then, Cajun fiddler Lisa Haley and her Zydekats arrive with the force of a major weather front. Storm advisories are necessary here for any who might not be comfortable losing inhibitions and dancing with abandon to Haley’s celebratory and infectious Louisiana delta music. Like Cajun cooking, this spicy musical confection may be too rich if your system can only tolerate delicate fare. Lisa and her Kats don’t do “delicate.”

Zydeco and Cajun music, like the Louisiana delta from which they grew, is combustible, capricious, lit by lightning flashes, rich and earthy, and dangerously intoxicating. Haley warns that even a brief exposure to her music can produce “zydecosis,” a chronic malady characterized by hyperkinetic activity, a need to dance, and a predisposition to grin and laugh frequently. Once zydecosis is contracted it is hard to shake. Once the zydeco storm is unleashed, it is hard to contain. Haley said she is excited about returning to the Idyllwild Arts (IA) campus, even though this is her first time playing at Jazz in the Pines. “My folks ate beans so that I could attend ISOMATA [Idyllwild School of Music and the Arts] sum-

mer camp for my four high school summers,” she related. “I remember [fellow student] Buzz Holmes [now a member of the Idyllwild Arts Board of Governors] being the biggest troublemaker during the summers. I’m going to remind him when I see him.” Haley played viola each of her four ISOMATA summers, which, with its emphasis on counterpoint and rhythm, proved solid training for her fiddling. “I have really great memo-

ries of being there during those summers,” she said, “that natural beauty, really amazing teachers and really challenging music.” Her younger brother also attended as a trombone player. Although classically trained in viola and piano, Haley recognized that Cajun music was her professional calling. Haley and the Kats have been highly popular regulars at Ken Dahleen’s Idyllwild Summer Concert Series. Haley said she is

looking forward to playing as part of the jazz festival and has already received tweets from local fans who are looking forward to her return to Idyllwild. “We should have a good turnout,” said Haley. Haley’s Acadian delta roots are deep, even though, for reasons of her mother’s health, the family moved to Southern California when Lisa was a child. “When we went outside [our house], it was Southern California, but inside it was Louisiana, with all the music that is part of our culture,” she said. Haley is a fourth-generation fiddler who has played with Cajun

musical royalty — Queen Ida, Joe Simien, Al Rapone, Rockin’ Sydney, and studied with Cajun fiddle master Canray Fontenot. Haley’s 2008 post-Katrina CD “King Cake,” dedicated to New Orlean’s rebirth, was Grammy-nominated. She and the Kats tour the U.S. and internationally, and have won national and international accolades. With Haley at Jazz in the Pines are Gigi “Gee” Rabe on accordion and vocals; Chuck Alvarez (also with Idyllwild roots) on guitar and vocals; Andy Anders on bass and vocals; and Maria Martinez on drums and percussion.

Jazz icon Jeff Hamilton brings the beat

By Marshall Smith Idyllwild Town Crier Staff Reporter

J

eff Hamilton is famous for his hands, his power drumming, and how he deftly drives any ensemble fortunate enough to have him at the seat. He has been a prime mover with jazz greats Ray Brown, Oscar Peterson, Woody Herman and the L.A. Four. For 26 years, his partnership with John and Jeff Clayton in the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra (CHJO) has dominated the big band jazz scene. Hamilton brings his trio, Tamir Hendelman on piano and Christoph Luty on bass, to Jazz in the Pines in Stephens Recital Hall, the festival’s jazz temple. Hendelman is also the pianist with CHJO and a distinguished arranger and player in his own right. Luty’s rich bass lower register sound has been favorably compared with Ray Brown. But it is Hamilton’s hand-drumming that regularly blows audiences away. In a review of the Ray Brown trio, Denver Post critic Jeff Bradley observed, “Hamilton brought the crowd to its feet with his amazing hand-drumming, soft and understated yet as riveting and

rewarding as any drum solo you’ve heard.” Hamilton, a native Hoosier, recalled his time at Indiana University. “We were pushed to create our own instruments,” he remembered. “For me it became the snap of the fingers on the cymbals, the search for different sounds, always in the service of the music.” But it was when he took over from Shelly Mann in the L.A. Four that an accident evolved into a Hamilton signature. “I dropped a stick by accident,” recalled Hamilton. “It was the element of surprise.” Hamilton continued on with one stick and one hand. Later, Ray Brown said, “I think you should keep that in.” There is almost no one of consequence or note that Hamilton has not performed or recorded with including Ella Fitzgerald, the Count Basie Orchestra, Rosemary Clooney, George Shearing, Lionel Hampton, Milt Jackson, Barbra Streisand, Mel Torme, Benny Carter and many more.

Hamilton is easy to talk with and clearly loves the jazz family of which he is a renowned part. A great friend and mentor and CHJO co-leader, John Clayton, whom he met at Indiana University, gave Hamilton some early advice that helped him forge his career. “Decide who you want to play with,” said Clayton. “Do your research and homework and that will be your seat when the opportunity opens up. Talk to the people that play with them. And then sit down in the band that calls you.” Hamilton remembers Clayton talking about how jazz is different from other forms and how it builds family-like bonds. “He was talking about being at Shelly’s Manhole (iconic 1960s L.A. jazz club). Everybody walks on the bandstand and hugs each other. ‘I want to be in a group that can do that,’ Hamilton remembers Clayton saying.” This will be Hamilton’s first time at Jazz in the Pines. It is an event not to be missed. He is also playing Friday evening at the Patron’s Dinner.

2011 Jazz Volunteer of the Year

L

Linda Anderson – Volunteer Extraordinaire

inda joined the Jazz Festival team early on, if not the first year, certainly the next. She was available for any job and soon became an integral part of the volunteer staff. Her work has evolved to include responsibility for the musicians’ needs and the musicians’ gate. The musicians have a reliable friend in Linda. Each year she knows them by name and greets their families and entourages. Early on, she found suitable housing for them on campus or in the Village and made sure they had keys and got to their quarters. She makes sure musicians and their instruments are escorted to the stage. Linda attends to the headliners and makes sure their needs are met. She once left working at the festival, went home and made fresh salsa for Poncho Sanchez to have upon his arrival. A remarkable gatekeeper, Linda has a fair yet tough approach toward ticketed entrants and comps. She keeps an updated and accurate list of performers — no easy task. Her crew at the gate are like a family and work as a well coordinated team. The Green Room is the sacrosanct quarters for

the performing musicians. As manager of the Green Room, Linda orders the food, sets up the daily buffet, and makes sure the musicians have a consistent supply of all they need. She has trained and has a devoted group of volunteers to see that her wishes are followed. Linda’s diverse talents extend to cooking and serving at early Patron’s dinners and consulting on all jazz issues. If the devil is in the details, Linda doesn’t let it bother her. All of the volunteers learn that their jobs entail countless details and Linda approaches these tasks in a matter-of fact way. She works with tenacity and diplomacy. Her volunteers return year after year, and all who know and work with her recognize in Linda a person who works tirelessly for a successful festival and who shows up, not seeking the limelight or personal recognition, but for the good of the event. We all know she is a wonderful person and the worthy Volunteer of the Year for 2011. And for all years. Nancy Ann Harrison Lynnda Hart Pat Litfin

his Straight Jackets and the newly formed Hot Club of Idyllwild, led by Don Reed, guitarist, playing in the style of Django Reinhardt. To complete his first appearance at Jazz in the Pines, the Barn will close Saturday with the world renowned Jeff Hamilton Trio. The French Quarter will bring back many of your favorites: Greg Jones has his band and will also emcee, Rocky Zharp, Change Required, and P.S. Blues will rock, and we will introduce Bonne Musique Zydeco Band to set the stage for the After Hours Jazz and Jambalaya dinner held on campus, which begins after the music ends on Saturday. Bonne Musique will also be featured at the dinner. Make sure to get your tickets, if you haven’t already. It costs just $25 for a great dinner and this amazing Cajun music. These fantastic venues and surrounding areas, filled with artisans displaying their arts and crafts and a food court offering many delicious choices, are connected with a system of paths taking you around the festival grounds. Believe it or not, these grounds are home to the Idyllwild Arts Academy, a residential high school for the arts. The students of this prestigious school have the opportunity to major in the arts field of their choice — dance, film, music (including jazz), theatre, visual arts, creative writing and interdisciplinary arts — while completing a rigorous course of college-preparatory classes. These students, my friends and fellow jazz fans, are supported by you when you attend this yearly festival. The town of Idyllwild provides a wonderful cadre of volunteers, some 300 strong, who help the Associates of Idyllwild Arts to produce the festival as their main fundraiser for the school. Our wonderful and dedicated volunteers join with many community organizations and our much-appreciated sponsors to bring you this great weekend of jazz … Keeping Jazz Alive! As Jazz Chair, I welcome you and thank you for attending! Idyllwild is a great place to visit: Get to know this charming village that boasts not one traffic light! You’ll want to return. Festival’s success depends on Associates Who Are the Associates? The Associates are a dedicated group of individuals, families and businesses who support the educational programs of Idyllwild Arts Academy. More than 250 members, both in Idyllwild and off the Hill, share a belief in the vital role of the arts in our society. Mission Statement The purpose of the Associates of Idyllwild Arts Foundation is to act as a non-profit association for the support of education in the arts, particularly the programs of the Idyllwild Arts Academy and the Summer Program, and to provide cultural activities for the community of Idyllwild. What do the Associates do? The Associates is an event-driven organization, holding fundraisers that include concerts, auctions and the popular two-day Jazz in the Pines Festival, now in its 18th year. (Jazz in the Pines is staffed by Associates as well as many volunteers from Idyllwild and surrounding communities, and brings in audiences from throughout Southern California and beyond.) All proceeds from each of the Associates’ events go to support the programs at Idyllwild Arts Academy and the Summer Program. The Associates also raise funds for Arts Academy through annual membership contributions and fund-raising events. Part of the funds raised goes toward scholarships for students and these are based on financial need, talent and a program’s need to strengthen a particular area. Funds are also dedicated to children of local families and to encourage increased multicultural diversity in the summer. The Associates provide volunteer service to the school. The Associates also sponsor cultural activities for members and the community at large How does Jazz in the Pine Fit In? All Jazz in the Pines profits are used to support Idyllwild Arts

Academy, both for the regular academic year and the Summer Program, helping to provide students an opportunity to learn or polish skills in a variety of arts disciplines …. including jazz! Why You Should Join Us Reasons for joining the Associates are as varied as are the individual members. Some join to support a scholarship program. Some just want to work with others who care about music, theater, dance and other arts. Some members love jazz and want to get involved with our prestigious festival. If you are new to the community, joining the Associates may be your way to meet people and get involved. Whatever the reason, you’ll be joining a group of people committed to giving talented young artists financial help.

About the Idyllwild Arts Foundation

T

he mission of the Idyllwild Arts Foundation is to promote and advance artistic and cultural development through education in a beautiful, natural environment conducive to positive personal growth. The Idyllwild Arts Academy provides preprofessional training in the arts and a comprehensive college preparatory curriculum to a diverse student body of gifted young artists from all over the world. The Idyllwild Arts Summer Program provides arts instruction and experiences of the highest caliber to a diverse student population of all ages and abilities. History Idyllwild Arts (formerly Idyllwild School of Music and the Arts or ISOMATA) was founded by Dr. Max Krone and his wife, Beatrice. Visionaries with a dream of a remote place where people of all backgrounds could come together to experience the arts, they established the Idyllwild Arts Foundation in 1946 and purchased acreage in the scenic San Jacinto Mountains on which to build. In 1950, approximately 100 adult students began attending summer classes in the arts. Over the years, summer activities have continued to grow, expanding to include programs for children of all ages and special Family Camps. Classes in music, dance, theatre, visual arts, writing and Native American arts are offered to students from age 5 and up. Each year, over 1800 adults and children attend Idyllwild Arts Summer Program courses. In 1964, day-to-day operations and general management of the property was given to the University of Southern California under the terms of an agreement with the Idyllwild Arts Foundation. In 1983, the Foundation exercised its See Foundation, next page

option to resume independent management and resumed sole ownership of the instituion. Dr. and Mrs. Richard H. MacNeal became major benefactors in 1985 and provided the funds to realize a long-time dream: the establishment of the first independent boarding high school for the arts in the western United States, the Idyllwild Arts Academy. The Academy opened in the fall of 1986 with a student body of 70 students, grades 8–12. In that first year, students attended a nearby independent school each morning for college preparatory academic classes and returned to the Idyllwild Arts Academy campus to receive pre-professional training in the arts each afternoon. By 1990, academic classes were held on the IAA campus. In a remarkably short time, the school began attracting some of the most talented young artists from around the world. Today, the Academy is a fully-accredited college preparatory school in its own right and prepares artists for the finest conservatories and professional companies, liberal arts colleges and universities. The Academy hosts over 290 students from across the United States and around the world. President Brian Cohen, deans and faculty scour the U.S. and the globe to bring the most talented students from Europe, Asia, Australia, South America, Africa and North America back to California. The Academy boasts a student teacher ratio of 8:1, with more than 60 percent of students receiving some form of financial aid (an annual total of over $6.5 million).
