Welcome to our 20th Jazz in the Pines By Marsha Lytle, Jazz in the Pines chair To all of you returning to the Idyllwild Jazz in the Pines Festival, we’re glad to have you back, and to all of you who are here for the first time a big WELCOME. You’re in for two days of continuous music from three different venues. How good is that? You can choose the French Quarter where you have a chance to really get your groove on with some good old blues/rock sounds or just relax for a moment in the shade with a cool one brought to you by a top notch server. Or, choose Stephens Recital Hall, more familiarly known as “The Barn,” to hear the sounds often referred to as “straight-ahead” jazz. You’ll have an opportunity to enjoy vocalists, small groups or combos playing in an intimate venue with both indoor seating and outdoor shaded seating for over-flow crowds. Finally, there is our largest venue, the Main Stage, an open-air amphitheater where you sit, shaded, under billowing parachutes to enjoy a wide variety of sounds. To kick off the festival weekend, we have the traditional Patrons’ Dinner. For those of you lucky enough to enjoy this great party, you’ll be treated to a “Taste of Idyllwild” with some of our fine local restaurants providing the appetizers for the cocktail party to begin the evening. You also will be able to hear great jazz featuring student alums and faculty of Idyllwild Arts Jazz Studies program. This year’s 20th-anniversary Jazz in the Pines festival will bring you some familiar musical groups and yet a lot that is new to enjoy. Both days the Main Stage will be emceed by KKJZ 88.1 FM’s own Bubba Jackson, while The Barn will have Robin Adler as emcee on Saturday and Sandii Castleberry on Sunday. Rocky Zharp will do the honors in the French Quarter both days. These fantastic venues and surrounding areas, filled with artisans displaying their arts and crafts and a food court offering many delicious choices, are connected with a system of paths taking you around the festival grounds. Believe it or not, these grounds are home to the Idyllwild Arts Academy, a residential high school for the arts. Grammy winner Schuur to appear at jazz fest By J.P. Crumrine Editor This month’s Idyllwild Jazz in the Pines will feature many artists who are returning and familiar to the faithful audience. But one voice will make her inaugural visit to the mountain amphitheatre. Diane Schuur will step onto the Holmes Amphitheatre stage Saturday, Aug. 17, for the first time. Schuur, now living in Palm Desert, is a world-renowned jazz vocalist and pianist. Her mentor was Dinah Washington and Schuur sings jazz tunes from the 1940s and 1950s. “It’s a mixture of standards and some of the tunes I’m know for,” Schuur said, describing plans for the jazz fest. This will include “Deedle’s Blues.” Her nickname is Deedles. But Schuur is known for her beautiful voice and a wide genre of songs, not just from the Washington era. Although born blind, she made up for it with perfect pitch and a love for music. She’s been singing since she was 9, almost 50 years ago. “I haven’t let it stop me from forging ahead in life,” she said proudly. She also sings pop music from the 1960s. Her first song was a country song and she made an album several years ago. Her range is broad. Frank Sinatra and Stan Getz, personal friends are also important sources for her music. Attention is necessary and enjoyable as she can surprise listeners during a performance. Schuur just loves singing and sang a verse on the phone during the interview. She has garnered five Grammy nominations and won two Grammy Awards for best female jazz vocal performance. Schuur has just returned from another European tour, from England to Latvia, with stops in France, Italy and Switzerland. She has performed in Japan, a bastion of jazz enthusiasts, for decades. She enjoys the traveling and has no favorite venue. As a long-time Southern California resident currently living in Palm Desert, she was paying close attention to the Mountain Fire last week. “I’m hoping and praying Idyllwild is spared from this horrible fire,” she said last Saturday. Modern jazz highlights festival By J.P. Crumrine News Editor Many jazz genres will be heard at the 20th-annual Jazz in the Pines Festival, including John Daversa and his quintet representing modern jazz. “There’s a lot of improvisation and quite a bit of structure,” Daversa explained. “The structure is to know where you are going, but not be a hindrance.” Daversa performs, composes, directs and teaches jazz. When asked which is his favorite, he replied, “All are one; they are all an expression of me. “Music is an extension of my soul — the one thing I think about when I wake up and when I go to sleep. I’m excited about it all day,” he stated. Daversa’s love for jazz has been rewarded numerous times. He has won the Herb Alpert Award, the David Joel Miller Award, National Trumpet Competition and ITG Jazz Soloist Competition, and been a finalist in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition. Daversa has played at several past Jazz in the Pines as a member of other groups. This year, he will be coming from the East Coast, having moved to Miami to become the jazz chair for the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami. He has formed two bands, the John Daversa Progressive Big Band and the John Daversa Sextet, the latter appears on the Holmes Amphitheatre Stage at 4:45 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17. For Daversa, “modern jazz” is being truthful to the moment. And the quintet, which has played together for 10 years, understands and feels those moments. “We have a chemistry,” Daversa said. “You can’t manufacture the sound without the cumulative experience. Certain arrangements we play we can tear down into something different.” Saturday’s audience will also experience these moments, Daversa promised. Gospel influenced the group’s last recording, so one should expect a lot of joy and love in the tunes.

Joining Daversa will be Gene Coy on drums whom Daversa described as “so unique that he floats through the music like a butterfly.” Jerry Watts Jr. is bassist and Tommy King plays keyboard. The saxophonist is Jeff Driskill, who has played with the Big Band sine 1996. “The band does really well, unabandoned improvisation mixed with good structure,” Daversa promised. “The doors are always open to go somewhere else. Harvey Mason and Chameleon change jazz By J.P. Crumrine News Editor Harvey Mason and the Chameleon Project will be one of the new faces at the 20th Jazz in the Pines this month. Mason is a world-renowned drummer who has appeared on more than 1,000 recordings. He also is one of the original members of Fourplay, a widely popular jazz quartet. While Mason has not performed here, Idyllwild has been a frequent winter destination for him. “I love Idyllwild,” he said. “I’ve been coming during snow times and stay at a cabin.” Mason is familiar with Jazz in the Pines and looks forward to playing there. Bubba Jackson, the jazz fest’s artistic director, recruited and persuaded Mason to play. The Chameleon Project is a quintet including Mason on drums, Darrell Jones on bass, Patrice Rushen on keyboard, Bill Summers on percussion, Mark De Clive-Lowe on piano/keyboard and Kamasi Washington on saxophone. Although Mason has been part of Fourplay since the early 1990s, one of its benefits is the group still encourages members to pursue individual direction. Mason, who had formerly been a long-time studio musician, worked with Herbie Hancock. In 1973, they recorded a 15-minute jazz classic — now “Chameleon” — which first appeared on Hancock’s album, “Head Hunters.” While this sets a tone for Mason’s group, he also said, “I consider myself a chameleon. Over 30 years I recorded solo as well as with all individuals and with Fourplay. I can easily switch into different jazz genres from bebop to smooth and different music from pop to country to R and B.” At Jazz in the Pines, Mason and his group will be playing jazz. “We’ll be creating music right before your eyes,” he promised. Like the Phoenix, ‘Bad Jim’s’ blues rise from firefighting By J.P. Crumrine News Editor By day, he’s protecting and saving lives as a firefighter and paramedic. Out of uniform, he has revived a singing career and hopes he “heals souls with his music.” Capt. James Reyes and the other four BoneThumpers plan to soothe your heart and soul at the 20th-annual Idyllwild Jazz in the Pines, where they will close the French Quarter Sunday, Aug. 18. Reyes has been with Idyllwild Fire Department since 1989. But his musical outlet had been dormant for even longer, he said. For nearly 27 years he stifled his youthful avocation. But slowly, as if receiving CPR, he has begun to revive it. For several years, the only expression he had was writing songs with Tracy G, formerly the guitarist with Dio. While collaborating, Reyes’ songwriting partner encouraged him to return to his singing roots and go public. While Tracy G is heavy metal, Reyes’ roots are rhythm and blues. “Blues, real blues,” stressed Bad Jim, his blues name. “We’re a throwback to the day of the Roadhouse, Chicago and New Orleans style.” Texas blues and Central Valley California blues have influenced Reyes’ style. “My family is all from Texas,” he said. Most importantly, blues — his choice of music — reflects his life. “Life is good,” Bad Jim said. “And blues are a celebration of life.” The genre may be about a discordant moment or problem, for example, “My life took a bad turn, but I’ll tell you all about it and celebrate overcoming it,” he explained, It’s not sad, it’s uplifting, he stressed. “County [music] makes you cry.” With the support of Tracy G, Reyes decided to form his own musical caregiving group. Last fall, Reyes posted a flier around the desert, “looking for a band.” It worked. He recruited four other players, a bass, guitar, sax and drums. They rehearse and began performing this spring. While small venues in Palm Desert and La Quinta were first, now the group headlines, such as at the recent fundraiser for The Living Desert, and will return next year. “We have fun while making sounds the audience enjoys,” he said. “It’s good they’ll pay a little money and want to see you

again and tell a few friends. Then we’ve done our part.” Reyes’ songwriting talent has not been abandoned as his singing career is reborn. He’s written several pieces for the BoneThumpers; unfortunately, they won’t be ready to perform those at the Jazz Fest. But he promised some will be heard when the group appears at Café Aroma next month. While firefighting and music are the main portions of his life, neither are long term goals. He knows music doesn’t pay and he’ll eventually retire from IFD. An overview of this year’s Jazz in the Pines By J.P. Crumrine News Editor The Jazz in the Pines program continues to bring new and fresh jazz performers to the Hill as well as reward attendees with ever popular and returning favorites. For Idyllwild, one of the 2013 entertainers will be local and American Idol finalist Casey Abrams, who performs in the Holmes Amphitheatre at noon Sunday. Abrams, 21, won’t be the youngest performer because Marsha Lytle, jazz chair, is bringing back Ray Goren, the phenomenal 13-year-old singer and guitarist, with his band. Goren makes an appearance for the third consecutive year. While Abrams and Goren invigorate jazz with their youth, Lytle and Artistic Director Bubba Jackson, KKJZ 88.1FM personality, bring several long-time, well-known and recognized Grammy artists to the festival. On Saturday, the audience hears two-time Grammy-award winning vocalist and pianist Diane Schuur (1:30 p.m.) and the Harvey Mason Chameleon Project (3 p.m.) with Grammy award-nominated percussionist Harvey Mason and featuring multiple Grammy award-nominated pianist and vocalist Patrice Rushen. The John Daversa Quintet finishes the afternoon on the main stage. While not yet a Grammy nominee, Daversa has won many national jazz awards, including the Herb Alpert and ITG Jazz Soloist competitions. On Sunday in The Barn, jazz aficionados may listen to the Rob Thorsen Trio featuring Josh White, the second-place winner of the 2012 Thelonious Monk piano competition. The amazing jazz talent is not limited to a few award winners. This year, jazz vocalists Janis Mann and Denise Donatelli return. While always popular, these favorites are complemented with new additions to the local jazz scene. On Sunday, Jackson introduces Izzy Chait and then Amina Figarova. Chait is a jazz vocalist whose professional career began in the 1960s during his stint in the Marines. For the next 25 years his musical career was in abeyance as he developed his antique and auctioneer business. In 2001, he released his first album and now appears throughout Southern California belting out classic jazz standards such as “All Of Me,” “Blues In The Night,” “All The Way” and Gershwin songs. jazz pieces, was born and raised in Baku, Azerbaijan, and her husband, Bart, a flutist, is from Belgium. They treat an audience to jazz’s international feel, which they have shared with jazz fans in Newport, New Orleans and New York, where they now reside. Finishing the afternoon is the Euphoria Brass Band from San Diego. This group is quickly growing Idyllwild roots. It recently appeared at the 2013 Aroma Spring Jazz Fest and participated in the Fourth of July Parade. Many local groups also perform that weekend. Familiar to long-time jazz fest visitors are Rocky Zharp, P.S. Blues Band, Robin Adler, The Chuck Alvarez Band and Change Required. Besides the tradition of extraordinary jazz, the Associates of Idyllwild Arts Foundation, who produce Idyllwild in the Pines, established a culinary tradition in recent years — the Friday night Patrons’ Dinner. “A Taste of Idyllwild” Cocktail Party, which Idyllwild restaurants host, starts this special evening with a Red Carpet Entrance. The night continues with gourmet food, fine wine and fun, along with music from Idyllwild Arts students and alumni. The magic of Jazz in the Pines’ Patrons’ Dinner By J.P. Crumrine News editor The annual Patrons’ Dinner precedes the Jazz in the Pines by one day and gives the attendees a sense and feel for the next 48 hours. This year, for the 20th-annual Jazz in the Pines, a crystal ball will be at the center of each table. Diners may ask and consider, “Where is Idyllwild Arts going and are you part of its future?” The dinner, entertainment and crystal balls are magical. Chris Trout, Patrons’ Dinner Committee chair, assures us because, for the third consecutive year, she has planned an elaborate and entertaining evening without using a dollar of scholarship money. “I’m making something out of nothing. Anyone can buy crystal,” she said proudly, “but I’m creating it.” To manufacture an evening of exchanging ideas and meeting new friends, Trout promises each place setting will have a biography and photo of an IA faculty member. This will enable diners to discuss the students’ opportunities and possibilities. “Without the faculty, there would be no school or town,” Trout said. The dinner also features a retrospective of the jazz fest’s first 19 years, from a few hours on a Saturday in August 1994 to a three-day event in 2013. Nelson Dinner Hall, the site of the Patrons’ Dinner, will be feted with posters, photographs, T-shirts, past programs from the earlier jazz fests and a salute to the hundreds of volunteers. As the attendees absorb the past jazz fests and contemplate the school’s future, Fritz Coleman, NBC4’s weathercaster and frequent Idyllwild visitor, will entertain diners with his cogent, insightful and humorous comments on the present. Coleman has agreed to perform in the round following dinner, another first for Trout. Complementing the crystal balls will be three crystal chandeliers that will be available for future events, such as adorning the French Quarter on Saturday and Sunday. The “Taste of Idyllwild” precedes dinner and entertain-

ment. As if on a magic carpet, patrons will be conveyed to various international cuisines, according to Trout. Café Aroma will offer Italian choices, La Casita will bring Mexican treats and Mile High Café will have something from Korea and Japan. Patrons have a choice of three entreés: sea bass with mango salsa, beef tenderloin with Bordelaise sauce or fresh summer vegetables in phyllo pastry. All are accompanied by delicious side dishes of vegetables. The scrumptious dessert will be chocolate mousse with creme fraiche drizzle topped with mint. 2013 Idyllwild Jazz in the Pines Volunteer of the Year Our Jazz Volunteer of the Year is the beloved daughter, wife, mother and friend in a closely-knit family. Joyce Cummings is described by intimate friends as “compassionate and caring, a woman who takes charge, follows through, and is widely knowledgeable.” Although very family-oriented, she nevertheless makes time to volunteer for many things. This year’s Jazz in the Pines Volunteer of the Year is a woman who has given of her time and passions to multiple worthy causes on the Hill. She is a woman who served with the Rotary Anns, worked on the Lemon Lily Festival Committee, chaired the annual Quilt Show, and has long served in volunteer efforts for the Associates of Idyllwild Arts. Joyce has been a member of the Associates for more than a decade and has devoted her time, energy and compassion to multiple fund-raising efforts.

She has not only served on the Board of Directors but is well-remembered for having key roles in the Associates’ annual auction, the Bid ‘n Buy, and as a key volunteer for Jazz in the Pines. Although serving on various jazz committees for a dozen years, she has most notably headed up the committees responsible for the front gate area (never an easy task) and more recently has overseen responsibility for the art and food vendors operation. This is one of the most time-intensive efforts of the festival, involving many months of work each year and a firm dedication to enhancing the entire Jazz in the Pines festival and the scholarship funds available to local residents. Joyce Cummings is certainly an important part of the success of this festival that wholly depends on the many capable volunteers dedicated to raising scholarship funds for local residents.

About the Idyllwild Arts Foundation Idyllwild Arts Foundation’s mission is to promote and advance artistic and cultural deveopment through education in a beautiful, natural environment conducive to positive personal growth. The Idyllwild Arts Academy provides preprofessional training in the arts and a comprehensive college preparatory curriculum to a diverse student body of gifted young artists from all over the world. The Idyllwild Arts Summer Program provides arts instruction and experiences of the highest caliber to a diverse student population of all ages and abilities. History Idyllwild Arts (formerly Idyllwild School of Music and the Arts or ISOMATA) was founded by Dr. Max Krone and his wife, Beatrice. Visionaries with a dream of a remote place where people of all backgrounds could come together to experience the arts, they established the Idyllwild Arts Foundation in 1946 and purchased acreage in the scenic San Jacinto Mountains on which to build. In 1950, approximately 100 adult students began attending summer classes in the arts.

Over the years, summer activities have continued to grow, expanding to include programs for children of all ages and special Family Camps. Classes in music, dance, theatre, visual arts, writing and Native American arts are offered to students from age 5 and up. Each year, over 1800 adults and children attend Idyllwild Arts Summer Program courses. In 1964,day-to-day operations and general management of the property was given to the University of Southern California under the terms of an agreement with the Idyllwild Arts Foundation. In 1983, the Foundation exercised its option to resume independent management and resumed sole ownership of the institution. Dr. and Mrs. Richard H. MacNeal became major benefactors in 1985 and provided the funds to realize a long-time dream: the establishment of the first independent boarding high school for the arts in the western United States, the Idyllwild Arts Academy. The Academy opened in the fall of 1986 with a student body of 70 students, grades 8–12. In that first year, students attended a nearby independent school each morning for college preparatory academic classes and returned to the Idyllwild Arts Academy campus to receive pre-professional training in the arts

each afternoon. By 1990, academic classes were held on the IAA campus. In a remarkably short time, the school began attracting some of the most talented young artists from around the world. Today, the Academy is a fully-accredited college preparatory school in its own right and prepares artists for the finest conservatories and professional companies, liberal arts colleges and universities. The Academy hosts over 290 students from across the United States and around the world. Deans and faculty scour the U.S. and the globe to bring the most talented students from Europe,Asia,Australia,South America,Africa and North America back to California. The academy boasts a student teacher ratio of 8:1, with more than 60 percent of students receiving some form of financial aid (an annual total of more than $6.5 million).

The Associates are a dedicated group of individuals, families and businesses who support the educational programs of Idyllwild Arts Academy. More than 250 members, both in Idyllwild and off the Hill, share a belief in the vital role of the arts in our society.

Mission Statement The purpose of the Associates of Idyllwild Arts Foundation is to act as a nonprofit association for the support of education in the arts, particularly the programs of the Idyllwild Arts Academy and the Summer Program, and to provide cultural activities for the community of Idyllwild. What do the Associates do? The Associates are an event-driven organization, holding fundraisers that include concerts, auctions and the popular two-day Jazz in the Pines Festival, now in its 20th year. (Jazz in the Pines is staffed by Associates as well as many volunteers from Idyllwild and surrounding communities and brings in audiences from throughout Southern California and beyond.) All proceeds from each of the Associates’ events go to support the programs at Idyllwild Arts Academy and the Summer Program. The Associates also raise funds for Arts Academy through annual membership contributions. Part of the funds raised goes toward scholarships for students and these are based on financial need, talent and a program’s need to strengthen a particular area. Funds are also dedicated to children of local families and to encourage increased multicultural diversity in the summer. The Associates provide volunteer service to the school. The Associates also sponsor cultural activities for members and the community at large How does Jazz in the Pines fit in? All Jazz in the Pines profits are used to support Idyllwild Arts Academy, both for the regular academic year and the Summer Program, helping to provide students an opportunity to learn or polish skills in a variety of arts disciplines … including jazz! Why you should join us Reasons for joining the Associates are as varied as are the individual members. Some join to support a scholarship program. Some just want to work with others who care about music, theater, dance and other arts. Some members love jazz and want to get involved with our prestigious festival. If you are new to the community, joining the Associates may be your way to meet people and get involved. Whatever the reason, you’ll be joining a group of people committed to giving talented young artists financial help.
