WELCOME TO IDYLLWILD CINEMAFEST 2014 BY STEPHEN SAVAGE, FESTIVAL DIRECTOR AND FOUNDER
So here we are, moving into 2014 and the fifth-annual Idyllwild International Festival of Cinema. I want to say that again — the fifth annual. Most film festivals fail before they start, and the majority of those that do manage to get up and running never see a second year, let alone a third or fourth. Yet here we are, gearing up for another amazing run — healthy, more experienced and definitely ready to roll. The beautiful village of Idyllwild, our festival promoters and organizers, and our incredible group of volunteers, are all feeling a well-deserved sense of pride and accomplishment, as what Indiefilm.com called, “The greatest little film festival on Earth,” shines a spotlight once again on some of the world’s coolest indie filmmakers. And when I say world, I mean world. In 2011 and 2012 we changed the name of the festival slightly, from International Festival of Cinema, to Independent Festival of Cinema, reflecting our desire to focus on movies from the U.S. in support of domestic film production in an economy that was less than filmmaker-friendly, to say the least. But in 2013, due to the high volume of both American and foreign submissions, we decided to return to our original name, and now move into 2014 as a true international event. I know this will be looked upon as

a benchmark year for the town of Idyllwild, the film festival and all the amazing filmmakers whose work we showcase between Jan. 7 and 11. And we will have once again held true to our mission, to celebrate movie making with a festival for and about the filmmakers. I am humbled and proud to once again be named director of the Idyllwild International Festival Of Cinema. And I am sure the selected filmmakers will be proud to say that their movies screened at Idyllwild 2014. So bring on the movies, the parties, the actors and creators, and let’s celebrate the Greatest Little Film Festival on Earth. Idyllwild 2014.

SILVER PINES LODGE — A HISTORIC VENUE STORY BY NEILL BELL, CO-CHAIRPERSON One of the three venues at this year’s Idyllwild International Festival of Cinema has a long and colorful past as one of the town’s most historic buildings. As you look around the spacious lodge building, you might hear echoes of saws, laughter from old-time saloon patrons or even the sound of an old movie projector. That’s because today’s inn had been many different uses over the 90 years since it was built. Silver Pines owner Chris Singer and her family are proud to maintain the lodge and happy to host the most relaxed of the 2014 festival’s venues. The lodge building was constructed in 1923 to serve as a workshop for the manufacture of furniture. So, in those days, the lodge was the “industrial” center of the San Jacinto Mountains. Local pines and Manzanita formed the raw materials that were crafted into furniture in the spacious building. The products from this business furnished many of the cabins that sprang up in Strawberry Valley and surrounding areas. Some visitors bought this rustic furniture and took it home with them, but many furnished their summer cabins and vacation residences with the distinctive furniture. Even in the mid-1920s, the Rustic Shop and Tavern was more than just a place where saws, drills and hammers ruled. Visitors found the lodge a good place to stop for a meal or to fill up their automobile with gasoline. A gas pump stood just off the corner of the building, one of Idyllwild’s earliest places to buy oil and fill up the tank. Patrons could look

over tables and chairs made from the areas native woods while they ate lunch on the porch or in the yard. As soon as Prohibition came to an end in 1933 (or perhaps a little sooner), the Rustic Tavern served the town as a true saloon. Civilian Conservation Corps workers looked forward to the Rustic’s Sunday chicken dinners on their day of rest from building roads, stone walls and other recreational facilities in the nearby National Forest. The furniture business moved elsewhere as the Rustic was converted exclusively into an inn and tavern. In 1944, the old lodge became the Rustic Theatre, the place for Idyllwild residents and visitors to see movies. They watched the stars of the golden age of cinema. Gary Cooper, Rita Hayworth, Clark Gable, Lana Turner, Errol Flynn and Jean Harlow appeared on screen in the heart of the San Jacinto Mountains at the area’s only movie house. In the early 1950s, the present Rustic Theatre was built on North Circle Drive, maintaining the name of the original movie house. At that time, the lodge and cabins were renamed the Hillbilly Inn, to avoid name confusion.
So, it’s only fitting that the original Rustic Theatre has become one of the places where movie festival patrons can watch the independent movies being screened 70 years later at the 2014 IIFC. If you enjoy watching this year’s films at Silver Pines Lodge, you can thank inn owner extraordinaire Chris Singer. She bought Silver Pines 20 years ago and has maintained its historic traditions and made improvements ever since. Chris has donated Room 12 to serve as the Sky Island canteen—the same room that served as the Rustic box office and snack bar back in the 1940s. Chris and her two sons have established a reputation for hospitality that draws visitors year-round. Team IIFC 2014 extends our thanks to the Singers for hosting our filmmakers and festival goers in their charming, warm and historic lodge.

IDYLLWILD CINEMAFEST FEATURED FILMMAKERS STORIES BY MARSHALL SMITH, IIFC FEATURE WRITER & JAY PENTRACK, STAFF REPORTER
CASSIE JAYE Documentary filmmaker Cassie Jaye started fast out of the gate, winning best documentary at the Cannes Independent Film Festival in 2010 at the age of 21 with her first feature documentary, “Daddy, I Do,” an examination of faith-based abstinence only programs in schools. “Daddy, I Do” also notched wins at IIFC and an honorable mention at the Los Angeles International Film Festival. She previews her third, full-length documentary, “The Red Pill,” at IIFC 2014. Brilliant and inquisitive, Jaye is a trailblazer, seeking her own way forward, often through complex and difficult terrain. Although she graduated high school with a 4.3 GPA with college credits, she headed not to university but to Los Angeles on her own at the age of 18. From 2004 to 2008, she acted in numerous indepen-

dent films and commercials, and during a Writers Guild of America strike in 200708, launched her present behind-the-camera career. She founded Jaye Bird Productions with her mother, renowned abstract artist Nena Jaye, stepfather Jay Pugh and sister Christina Clack. and began work on “Daddy, I Do.” Her second, full-length documentary, “The Right to Love: An American Family,” (2012) followed Jay Foxworthy and Bryan Leffew’s struggle to regain their right to marry and raise their two adopted children. And, reprising some of the same themes as in “Daddy, I Do,” — the questions surrounding the privacy of one’s sexual choices versus
societal and governmental regulation — “The Right to Love” also charts a journey through complex terrain and shines a nuanced light on a highly polarized societal issue. At IIFC 2014, as featured filmmaker, Jaye previews “The Red Pill,” examining what is called the Men’s Rights Movement, a reaction to how the feminist movement has purportedly undercut the legal rights of men in questions of childbirth, child rearing and societal power. For Jaye, a lifelong feminist, the documentary once again gives her the opportunity to question her own closely held views, as was the case in “Daddy, I Do,” since she had been See Jaye, next page
Wolfgang Bodison, actor and independent filmmaker, will be one of the featured filmmakers at the 2014 Idyllwild International Festival of Cinema from Jan. 7 to 11. Bodison is best known for his first acting role as Lance Corporal Harold Dawson in “A Few Good Men”, starring Tom Cruise, Demi Moore and Jack Nicholson. The film was directed by Academy Award-nominee Rob Reiner. Bodison, who has appeared in numerous TV shows, in feature films and on stage, was also nominated for a NAACP Image Award as best actor for his performance in Rodney Nugent’s “The Letter.” He also teaches acting at the Playhouse West, founded by Robert Carnegie and Academy Award-nominee Jeff Goldblum. Two years ago, Bodison submitted two films to the IIFC, “Two Bulls” for which he won Best Actor, and “Simone.” Last year, “Bro-
ken” and “Sarah’s Wish” were screened; and this year, Bodison has submitted “The Long Wait.” Bodison will be showcased at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11. Five of his short films will be screened, along with an on-stage interview and Q&A with Steve Savage as host. His 90-minute segment is called “Wolfgang Bodison: A Filmmaker’s Journey.” Bodison has a special connection to Idyllwild and visits often with his family. The Town Crier explored Bodison’s career and his relationship with Idyllwild and the IIFC. TC: How did your interest in filmmaking evolve? WB: I started developing
an interest in filmmaking in college. I was a fine-arts major at the University of Virginia. I also focused on writing courses because I had always loved to write short stories, even as a kid. Inspired by “Apocalypse Now,” I wrote a book in high school about a character in the Vietnam War. I also loved photography and for my college thesis project, I made a music video to the U2 song, “Bullet the Blue Sky,” by taking black-and-white pictures of kids playing war and then wove the images into a story to the song. From that, my teachers suggested that maybe I continue to explore See Bodison, next page

raised in the abstinence movement. “Men basically now have no reproductive rights,” said Jaye, noting they have little or no say in legal decisions to abort or keep a child. Through serendipity, Warren Farrell, author of “The Myth of Male Power,” the bible of the MRM movement,

my interests in storytelling by exploring filmmaking. TC: Where did you learn your craft — both acting and filmmaking? WB: I moved to L.A. to pursue my dreams to be a writer and director. I started in the mailroom at Castle Rock Pictures. I then worked on several of their TV shows as a production assistant, and then was Rob Reiner’s set assistant on the film, “Misery.” For an aspiring filmmaker, that was a huge opportunity because
lived only 5 miles away from Jaye, providing her an upclose look at the movement from one of its key movers. In his book, Farrell, elected three times to the National Organization of Women Board of Directors, defines male power and powerlessness in today’s society and debunks the notion that patriarchal societies make rules that benefit men at the expense of women. He cites as examples
male-only military draft, that men constitute 93 percent of workplace deaths, that men are more likely to lose home and children after divorce, that men have higher suicide rates and that men have markedly shorter life spans than women. “This film is my personal journey, my progress in seeing both sides, acting as devil’s advocate,” said Jaye. “I was once single-minded in my feminist beliefs. Now
I’m questioning things and realizing that these issues are not really black and white.” “The Red Pill” is scheduled for a 2015 release. Jaye will screen a sneak preview at IIFC. In addition, she will screen five films – three shorts, “The GoldieBlox,” “Nwana,” “Isabella,” (see program synopses for storylines) and her two feature-length films, “Daddy, I Do” and “The Right to Love: An American Family.”
I got to watch Rob Reiner and Barry Sonnenfeld, who was the [director of photography] on the project, work together to create the movie. After that, I continued with production work and eventually became the location manager on “A Few Good Men.” One day, while working at the office, I bumped into Rob Reiner, who was directing the movie, and he asked me if I might be interested in auditioning for the role of Dawson. I told him that I didn’t have any acting experience, but he said that I had the right feel for
the part and that I should just give it a shot. I took him up on the offer and employed the help of an acting coach and worked on the role. After several auditions, Mr. Reiner said that he had a big decision to make. Of course, I didn’t think that decision had anything to do with me, but low and behold, as I was scouting locations for the movie, I got a call from his office and he got on the phone and said, “Welcome to the movie business. I’m offering the role of Dawson in a ‘A Few Good Men.’” And thus, my acting career began. TC: Can you tell me a bit about your journey and what inspired you to create a film about it? WB: As I learned the craft and pursued my act-
ing career, my directing aspirations were put on the back burner. But I did continue to write, mainly focusing on screenplays. Years passed and I worked steadily as an actor, but my passion to make movies remained strong. One thing that always proved to be a problem was the cost-prohibitive nature of the filmmaking process, which forced me to hope for and wait for an opportunity to make a movie. But as filmmaking evolved toward the digital platform, and the process became more accessible, I realized that I no longer had to wait for someone else to give me an opportunity; I could take matters into my own hands. Thus, I started on my journey by writing and directing my own short films with the goal of de-

veloping my talent toward directing a feature film. TC: You have had an a m a z i n g a c t i n g c a re er working alongside some truly great actors. How was the transition from being in front of the camera to behind it? WB: Moving from in front of the camera to behind it wasn’t a tough transition. Because of my acting background, I feel very comfortable talking to the actors and working with them to achieve their performance. TC: When was your first visit to Idyllwild? What was your impression of the local community? WB: My first visit to Idyllwild was when I worked with Stephen Savage on his film, “Legacy.” My short films have screened at the festival over the past three

IIFC INAUGURATES COLLEGE FILM SERIES BY MARSHALL SMITH, IIFC FEATURE WRITER
IIFC Director Stephen Savage touted a new program that he believes will add luster to the festival and provide audiences an exciting look at the work of the finest college filmmakers. Highly respected Chapman University Dodge College of Film and Media Arts is the first to be featured at IIFC with six thesis films from 2011 and 2012 graduates. “Our goal is to introduce a different film school each year, beginning with Chapman and then continuing with Los Angeles Film School, UCLA, USC, AFI and so on,” said Savage. He noted the idea of the new programming came to him when Derek Horne, Dodge College of Film and Media Arts film coordinator, submitted one of the Chapman films though the festival website. “It was a great animation film called ‘Light Me Up,’ but instead of submitting it alone it was part of a compilation with four other great films,” said Savage.“I was so blown away by what was on the DVD that I contacted Derek to ask if we might connect with the directors of these films and enter them in IIFC 2014.” The result is a new festival slot opening with six Dodge College short and featurette-length films: • “Amos” (29 minutes) directed by Taylor Maxwell • “Green Acres” (6 minutes) directed by James Beck • “Homecoming” (26 minutes) directed by Gursimran Sandhu • “Incest! The Musical” (23:30 minutes) directed by Grant Reed • “Light Me Up” (8:30 minutes) directed by Derek Solechek and Ryan Walton • “Picture Perfect” (24 minutes) directed by Winston Tso (See program synopses for storylines.) Chapman’s Dodge College undergraduate school offers bachelor’s degrees in Creative Producing, Digital Arts, Film
Production, Film Studies, Public Relations and Advertising, Screen Acting, Screenwriting and Television and Broadcast Journalism. Its Graduate Conservatory of Motion Pictures offers master’s degrees in Film Production, Film Studies, Film and Television Producing, Production Design, Screenwriting and a joint Juris Doctor/MFA and MBA degree in Producing with a focus on Entertainment Law.

‘RED WING’ OPENS FESTIVAL IDYLLWILD 2014 OFFICIAL AWARDS BY J.P. CRUMRINE, PROGRAM EDITOR The opening night film for the Idyllwild International Festival of Cinema is Director Will Wallace’s “Red Wing.” Wallace also is the festival’s co-director. “Red Wing” is loosely based on George Sa nd ’s French novella, “The Country Waif.” Rather than the green and pastoral French countryside, “Red Wing” is set in a small Texas cattle ranching town. It’s a socially thought-provoking and stirWill Wallace ring story of how love can be found in the most unusual places. “It’s a story of a boy and the woman who was the maternal figure in his life,” said Wallace. “It’s different takes on him — a very noble character surrounded by a number of other characters with less than noble intentions, and the series of obstacles he needs to overcome.” Glen Powell plays the adult Francis, who leaves town and finds work on the cattle ranch of Jim Verret, played by Bill Paxton. Powell worked closely with Wallace to influence his character’s presence. Eventually, Francis returns home to deal with his feelings and relationship with the woman who raised him (Breann Johnson) and her husband (Luke Perry). Shot in the summer of 2012, the Texas weather was sweltering, Wallace said. During production, the heat, often above 115 degrees, sent numerous crew members to the emergency room and caused the equipment to overheat. “One day, nine people had heat exhaustion,” Wallace lamented. “An ambulance came three times.” They needed an on-set physician to ensure the cast and crew were sufficiently hydrated. Not only was heat a concern for the cast and crew, but the frequent emergencies created filming frustrations for Wallace. “I was constantly reassessing what to shoot, but we still came in within the budget,” he said. The film’s production involved hundreds of people, but Wallace had worked with many of them before.

“We had a good team and a good plan,” he explained. “There is comfort working with a team whom you can rely on.” For example, some of the actors have attended the Will Wallace Acting Company school in Los Angeles. Besides the weather and its effect on the crew, the deal with Paxton was not signed until Wallace was t wo days into shooting. Wallace had back-up plans in case Paxton didn’t sign but he was truly hoping to work with Paxton on this film. Wallace’s stepfather, Terrence Ma lick, origina lly commissioned the script from Kathleen Orillion. “I thought it would be one I would love and do myself,” Wa l lace sa id. Or i l l ion’s origina l script was ver y good and received little re-working, according to Wallace. “I love being in Idyllwild,” Wallace said. He was especially interested in the snow prospects.
