his year’s Lemon Lily festival is focused on the flowers. Featuring an exciting mix of the traditional Lemon Lily events we’ve come to know and love alongside newly developed guided hikes and special programs, this year’s festival aims to have something for everyone! The Idyllwild Nature Center and the Friends of San Jacinto Mountain County Parks continue to work diligently each year to foster a greater appreciation for the threatened lemon lily. A recent survey of restoration plots along the Nature Center’s Lily Creek revealed several groups of healthy plants, a few of which appear to be ready to bloom this year. New educational programs at the nature center have incorporated tours of the lemon lily restoration enclosure, as well as visits to the sponsored lily plants found in restoration plots along the creek. Scouts and school-kids from across the region have learned the tale of this special species. This year’s festival launch features an otherworldly assortment of, well, other worlds: Join Rangers and Astronomy experts at Idyllwild Park’s Campground for an evening spent amongst the stars. Our neighboring planets Mars, Saturn, and Jupiter will all be visible in the evening sky, as will the perfect-for-telescope-viewing crescent moon. Since the lemon lily is believed to be pollinated nocturnally, we can’t think of a better way to launch the
Welcome from our president: On behalf of Friends of San Jacinto Mountain County Parks (FSJMCP) and our co-sponsor Idyllwild Nature Center, we welcome you to the 7th Annual Lemon Lily Festival. The festival is intended to provide joy, fun, listening pleasure, and education for our visitors. The festival is, of course, dedicated to one of our indigenous flowers, the lemon lily, Lilium parryi. The mission of the Lemon Lily Planning Group (Sandy Tatich, Ann Wehn, Gail Spiegel, Paul Jensen, and Amanda Allen) is to foster an appreciation for the threatened native lily (Lilium parryi),

SATURDAY kicks off a full day of activities at the Idyllwild Nature Center. The classic Lemon Lily pioneer town — designed to emulate a time when Lemon Lilies blanketed this mountainside — by the generous Friends of the San Jacinto Mountain County Parks with the help of Stone Soup Riley’s Farms. Musically, we’re delighted to welcome locally revered bluegrass band The Stone Creek Stompers to the Lemon Lily stage. The Pennyroyal Players are back by popular demand, re-spinning yarns from the American West in both story and song. The very young, very talented Celtic music trio “Three for Joy” round out Saturday’s performances. Pony rides, alpacas, children’s crafts, walks, talks, and a variety of delightful vendors will be featured throughout the day. Saturday’s special guided hike at the James Reserve is new to this year’s festival. (Pre-registration required: Check www.lemonlilyfestival.com for more details). events from Saturday’s line-up. We are delighted to welcome multi-talented folk musicians John Malcolm Penn and Bob Furgo to Sunday’s stage. The special high-country lemon lily survey with U.S. Forest Service district botanist Deb Nelson is sure to be an adventure. (Pre-registration required- see www.lemonlilyfestival.com for more details). At 3 p.m. at the Nature Center, there will be a drawing for the special iron-oxide painted plate featured on the cover of this publication. The plate was created especially for Lemon Lily by local artist David Salk. Lemon lily restoration
With great flowers come a totally manageable amount of responsibility By Amanda Allen Park Interpreter Idyllwild Nature Center
A
Over-collection of bulbs, flower picking and multiple drought years have contributed to its decline over the past 100 years.” These simple facts spawned the restoration efforts that gave rise to the Lemon Lily Festival seven years ago. Armed with the knowledge that human activities almost definitely initiated this long-standing dearth in lily populations, we strive to move forward in our correction of past wrongs.
fter seven years of love, devotion, and patience, there is still a lot we don’t know about our native lemon lilies. For instance, is the sphinx moth pictured above the sole pollinator of this precious plant, or are there multiple pollinators active throughout the day and night? Also, how does one best propagate a lemon lily from seed whilst retaining as many valuable seedlings as possible in the process? Does the drought spell disaster in the long-run, or— as with mountain yellow-legged frog restoration efforts—should we march forward regardless, knowing that the long-term prospects for the water-inhabiting flora and fauna of southern California is grim? These are all good questions; some more easily answered than others. Here’s what we do know about the Lemon Lily, in the words of botanist Kate Kramer: “In the first published botanical survey of the San Jacintos, Harvey Monroe Hall noted large numbers of bulbs being removed from the mountain streams in 1902. Photo taken at James Reserve by Director Dr. Jennifer Gee.
So what can you do? Well, if you live in Lemon Lily range (generally above 4,000 ft.) and have access to water or some creek-side property, plant some lilies. If you don’t, adopt one or two and we’ll plant them for you! Read our “how to plant a lily from a pot” guide, and the lilies will practically raise themselves. If you’ve got a particularly green thumb, join the propagation efforts at the Nature Center or start one of your own! If nothing else, keep an open mind, an open heart, and don’t forget to stop and smell the flowers once in a while.
Welcome

Festival features an array of fun events Music
This year’s festival features some outrageous talent from our own backyard. Taking the stage on Saturday is a bluegrass band with some local roots who collectively have some impressive credits. The Stone Creek Stompers are made up of Idyllwild resident Sandii Castleberry – guitar, vocals, harmonica; John Penn of La Quinta – vocals, banjo and mandolin; Bobby Furgo – fiddle, from Yucca Valley; and bassist Gene Libbea from Anza. Sunday’s featured act includes two renowned musicians, each of which has worked with the greats. John Malcolm Penn’s musical influences were vast, though it was time at what is now the Idyllwild Arts campus in the late 1950’s and Sam Hinton’s folk program that locked John into a lifelong love of folk and Americana music. Bobby Furgo currently resides in Yucca Valley CA with his wife and records with numerous Southern California artists, including his friends Leonard Cohen and Eric Burdon of the Animals. He is a regular on the bandstand with Lee Hazelwood, Nancy Sinatra, Wanda Jackson, Hot Club of Palm Springs, and the House Band at Pappy and Harriets. Rounding out this year’s performance is the small-in-stature, big-in-talent trio “Three For Joy.” Three for Joy is a Celtic music band made up of siblings Dominic (age 12), Joseph (11), and Angela Rose (9)
Padula. With their fiddles, cello and mandolin, the group performs Scottish, Irish and Cape Breton tunes, while weaving Irish dancing into the performance. We love their sound!
Special Guided Hikes
We are pleased to announce that this year’s festival will feature two very special guided hikes by reservation only. The goal of both hikes is to see wild lemon lilies in bloom– a phenomenon which is well worth the effort! Though of course we can’t predict exactly when these precious lilies will be in bloom, rest assured that both of these special hikes will take participants to locales where Lemon Lilies have historically bloomed during the second week of July. Visit http://lemonlilyfestival.com for more information before the event.
For the kids
This year’s Pioneer Town will be assisted by the beloved Riley’s Stone Soup Farm group. Featured activities include gold panning, rope making, folk music and dancing, pony rides, roping (see schedule on page 6). Pennyroyal Players return, bringing lively and touching musical portraits about those who settled the American West. Nikki’s Painted Ponies provide rides for kids, while the Alpacas of Anza are on Potted lemon lilies blooming at the Idyllwild Nature Center. PHOTO BY HALIE WILSON display.

T
aking the stage at this year’s Lemon Lily Festival is a bluegrass band with some local roots who collectively have some impressive credits. Sandii has lived in The Stone Creek Stompers Idyllwild since 2003, and has been an Idyllwild Concerts in the Park opening act every year since her arrival. She played for 4 years for the Coachella Stage Coach Music Festival family stage, and has been a performing and workshop artist for Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Orange County since 1998. She is also a founding member of “Hot Flash” a popular folk bluegrass band fronted by three women, and teaches music to children at the Idyllwild Arts Summer program. In the 1950’s, Singer/songwriter and Blue Night Recording Artist John Penn spent his youth in Idyllwild and Pine Cove. His grandparents owned a home in Stone Creek where he spent many summers. He also hung out during ISOMATA’s early years catching workshops by Sam Hinton and Pete Seeger. John’s song “Moonlight Motor Inn” inspired by his grandfather’s defunct motel (where Alhatti Conference Center now resides), is a bluegrass standard. John spent the early 1970’s jamming and performing with upcoming country folk-rock legends such as Linda Rondstadt and Emmy Lou Harris. Yucca Valley violinist/fiddlist Bobby Furgo is a much sought after musician in the Coachella Valley. He has an extensive touring background including such names as Leonard Cohen, and recording credits with Nancy Sinatra, Amy LaVere and Pat
Boone. He plays weekly at popular hang-out Pappy and Harriet’s in Pioneertown, and at the 29 Palms Inn. Gene Libbea spent the 1990’s playing stand-up bass with Grammy award-winning band “Nashville Bluegrass Band.” He spent many years on the road as a touring bluegrass John Malcolm Penn and Bob Furgo musician before retiring to Anza, where he presently makes his home. Catch the Stone Creek Stompers on Saturday, July 9th from noon to 4 p.m. at the Nature Center.

Natural history of our Lemon Lily
The Lemon Lily, one of our most spectacular local wildflowers, is rare and uncommon but not on the endangered species list. This 3- to 5-foot plant with large showy yellow flowers and whorled leaves is found in mountain creeks from 5,000 to 9,000 feet in our Southern California mountains with a few maybe two — populations in the mountains of Southern Arizona as well. About the Lemon Lily Lemon Lily or Parry’s Lily, Lilium parryi, is named in honor of Dr. Charles Christopher Parry, a renowned botanist who was among the first to collect it in the summer of 1876. our low-land lily lovers to plants that will grow in valley gardens — and are at least part Lemon Lily. Genetically variable populations in the wild are important for Lemon Lilies to persist; lilies must have a pollinator to produce seed. Available information suggests that sphinx moths (Hyles lineata and Sphinx perelegans) are the main pollinators. It makes sense; the Lemon Lily flowers are the most fragrant at dusk when moths would be flying. We really need to do a Lemon Lily “stake-out” and watch plants for a day and late evening to find out who is visiting our lilies here. In one of the earliest floras of the San Jacinto Mountains, an observation was made of the incredible collecting pressures by admirers trying to get the Lemon Lily in the nursery trade. With so many bulbs removed from our mountains, it’s no wonder that the Lemon Lily is a rare plant. The drought in the 1970s may have dried up much of the lily’s habitat, as well; fluctuating water levels have affected lily populations in Arizona. With a little care and attention, the Lemon Lily will continue to grace our mountains and be part of our lives.

The lilies inhabit springs, seeps, wet meadows and shady canyon bottoms along perennial streams at an elevation of 4,000 to 9,000 feet. Forest fires and subsequent erosion have severely impacted three populations in Arizona (Falk and Warren, 1994), and their populations have been negatively impacted by “flower pullers” in Palomar (Craig H.
Reiser, 1994) and bulb collectors in San Jacinto (H.M. Hall, 1902). It is uncommon throughout its California range, close to extirpation in San Diego County (Craig H. Reiser, 1994) and listed by state and federal agencies as a sensitive species that should be protected. Music
Why restore the lemon lily to Idyllwild?
writing his own songs of personal observation, angst, love, and hardship in Vietnam, and later honing his songcraft with a stint of staff and ‘work for hire’ writing for Screen Gems/Colgems productions. John began playing live about this time, developing into something of a ‘professional opening act’ on the west coast coffee house circuit and side ventures such as co founding the Cal State Long Beach Banjo, Fiddle & Guitar Festival in 1973. Numerous gigs with Emmylou Harris, Rodney Crowell, backing Freddy Fender, and founding along with fellow singer/songwriter Steve Spurgin the ‘before their time’ group Old Glory, has allowed John to enjoy a unique and rich musical past. But it’s John’s music today that counts. John is signed to Blue Night Records and his album, ‘Hangtown Fry’ was released in 2012, and his new album ‘Driftin’ River’ is due for release June 1, 2014. Bob Furgo’s Bio: Bobby scored his first major gig playing on United Artist Records “Boys in the Bunkhouse” playing sessions with members of the Wrecking Crew, an infamous 60’s and 70’s studio crew who can be heard on albums by the Beach Boys, the Monkees, and Frank Sinatra. He was picked up in 1988 by Leonard Cohen and played on 3 platinum selling albums- “The Future,” “Cohen: Live,” and “Essential Leonard Cohen.” Notable concert performances include Austin City Limits, Carnegie Hall in NYC, Royal Albert Hall in London, TV performances on The Tonight show with Jay Leno (NBC), Later with Jules Holland (BBC) and a live performance on the 1992 Juno Awards (CBC). He is still heard on radio, films, and movies across the world for playing on Cohen’s hits “Hallelujah,” “Dance Me to the End of Love” and the Grammy winning “The Wonderboys Motion Picture Soundtrack.” Bobby Furgo currently resides in Yucca Valley CA with his wife and records with numerous Southern California artists, including his friends Leonard Cohen and Eric Burdon of the Animals. He is a regular on the bandstand with Lee Hazelwood, Nancy Sinatra, Wanda Jackson, Hot Club of Palm Springs, and the House Band at Pappy and Harriets. He teaches private lessons on piano and violin. We can’t wait to hear these guys jam! For more info. visit John’s website here: http://www. johnmalcolmpenn.com.
By Dave Stith Amateur Botanist
Continued from page 7
Harvey Monroe Hall conducted the first systematic survey of the plants in the San Jacintos. His flora, “A Botanical Survey of San Jacinto Mountain” was published in 1902. Of Lilium parryi he writes: “This lily, with its tall, erect stems and conspicuous flowers either clear yellow or peppered with black, is a great favorite with the tourists and campers who annually visit the mountain. It was only a few years ago that the showy blossoms were very frequently encountered with along all the streams and bogs from nearly the lower edge of the Transition Zone up to an altitude of 9,000 feet, thus reaching into the lower part of the Canadian Zone. While it is now by no means rare, [it] is still only found in profusion only on the more remote parts of the mountain. That this is due entirely to the diligence of the bulb hunters is hard to believe, and yet one party took over 5,000 bulbs in a single season. Perhaps this, in addition to several consecutive dry summers, is responsible for the rapid depletion in their numbers.” From this we can learn three things: 1) They were once much more abundant than they are now; 2) the tourists who visited the mountain knew of them and; 3) thousands of them were dug up and forever removed from the mountain. I wanted to see if it was still true that they could be found in profusion on the more remote parts of the mountain, or if conditions were now
such that there was no hope of ever bringing them back. In 2009, I enlisted Tom Chester, along with some of our friends and colleagues, to help me count every Lemon Lily in Willow and Tahquitz creeks. We counted 2,662 plants, including new seedlings, immature plants that had not yet bloomed, flowering plants and plants in fruit with seeds. This appeared to be a healthy, reproducing population. If they can still grow where they have not been disturbed by people, I began to ask, “Why not in Idyllwild?” if we just give them a chance.
About the cover
Created especially for the Lemon Lily Festival by local artist David Salk, this plate was hand-painted using iron oxide pigment—one of the many substances used by Native Americans to create the long-lasting pictographs found throughout Idyllwild. David has donated this plate to be raffled off in support of the ongoing Lemon Lily Restoration Project. The Drawing will be held at this year’s 7th annual Lemon Lily Festival. Raffle Tickets are $1.00 each, or 6 for $5.00. We appreciate your support!
