Director’s Welcome

Co-Director’s Welcome

2014 marked the Idyllwild International Festival of Cinema’s fifth year, and to say it was the best year yet would be putting it mildly. I had high hopes when I first started laying out the foundation for the Idyllwild festival in 2009, but the past five years have proven to me that even hopes can fall short of some amazing realities. The IIFC moves into 2015 so strong and so viable, I am literally in awe of its potential, as every year the quality of filmmaking gets better, and bigger, and more inspiring. And to add even more awe to my already overblown exuberance, the audiences keep coming in greater numbers. To say we have come into our own falls short of the mark. IIFC has come so far in such a short time that I can now say, without fear of exaggeration, that we are truly one of The Go To Festivals for filmmakers and film lovers in California. And we show no sign of slowing down. So, let’s make 2015, Idyllwild’s Sixth season, the best one ever, by ensuring not only the best selection of independent films ever assembled for a sixth year festival, but also by promising to inspire, thrill, and excite, all who come this January 6th through 11th, as we celebrate the spirit of independent filmmaking world wide. I look forward to seeing you all. Stephen Savage Director, IIFC

Here we are! The 6th annual Idyllwild International Festival Of Cinema. I am so pleased to be named the co-director again for 2015. Thank you to Stephen Savage and his solid team for this continued honor. There has been such wonderful growth each year since I first came to the festival (as a filmmaker) in the first year. And I was honored and thrilled when asked to be its co-director in year two – 2011. And as each IIFC grows bigger and better, I look forward to my continued involvement with this incredible film festival. My family and I love Idyllwild, its incredibly kind and welcoming inhabitants, and its gorgeous, lush, landscape. We hope to be coming back for years to come! I see we have an amazing slate of films to screen again this year, and, as we move forward on what promises to be a huge year, I look forward to seeing some wonderful movies and meeting all the great filmmakers that have brought their work and talents to Idyllwild. I look forward to seeing you all on the mountain. Will Wallace Co-Director, IIFC

Stephen Savage IIFC Founder Director Stephen Savage is an award winning film and commercial director, screenwriter, producer and playwright. Named one of the New Indie Mavericks by The Hollywood Reporter, Savage’s writing and directing work includes the sleeper hit of the 2009 Palm Springs International Film Festival, “Cosmic Radio,” the Sundance Channel western-thriller “The Hunter’s Moon,” and “Legacy,” now in world wide release in seven languages. His commercial work for companies like Hyundai, Kia, Accura and the 2012 Super Bowl spot for Suzuki, along with his all access coverage of the LA Philharmonic at The Hollywood Bowl, have earned him a place among the most active independent filmmakers working today. Having worked with some of Hollywood’s brightest stars, and now stepping in as the author and executive creative director for a brand new production of “Ramona” (California’s official state play), with the 5000 seat Ramona Amphitheater as his new playground, Savage is one of “The” creative people to watch for in the coming few years. His adaptation of “Ramona,” based on the 1884 Helen Hunt Jackson novel, was invited to present its premiere via a staged reading at the Wells Fargo Theater at the Autry Western Heritage Center in Los Angeles this past November. The all star cast of readers, including Emmy award winning television actors and other Hollywood notables, earned a standing ovation from a packed theater audience. Savage’s latest feature film, “Vertical,” is currently enjoying a nationwide art house theatrical release for 2014-15. And his next film, “The Wind Of Heaven,” set for production in Montana in the summer of 2015, with an all star cast of some of the best names working today, promises to solidify his position as a rising star in the world of independent and mainstream filmmaking.

Idyllwild International Festival of Cinema 2015 By J.P. Crumrine Idyllwild Town Crier The Idyllwild International Festival of Cinema returns for its sixth time. From opening day, Tuesday, Jan. 6, through the awards ceremony, the evening of Sunday, Jan. 11, festival participants once again will be offered a panoply of dozens of films — from features through documentaries and shorts. Idyllwild 2015 demonstrates the growing reputation of the event. “I had no idea what a wonderful oasis Idyllwild is. What a wonderful surprise finding the forest land. It’s a perfect get-away for film lovers,” said Will Wallace, actor and director and honorary co-director of the festival for the fifth year. One-hundred thirty-five films will be shown at Idyllwild 2015 and each will have two screenings, said Stephen Savage, festival director and founder. On Saturday at the Idyllwild Library, the focus will be children’s films. “Until opening night, I have butterflies, [I’m] worried if nobody shows up,” Savage replied when asked what excites him about Idyllwild 2015. “It’s hard to get excited until it’s over, but we’re gaining a reputation as a simple festival and it’s getting bigger.” Then he shared some of this year’s highlights. Opening night film is “Ron and Laura Take Back America,” a comedy written and directed by its co-stars, the team of Mel England and Janice Markham. The film also stars Golden Globe Best Actress Nominee Irene Bedard, Jim J. Bullock and features a celebrity cameo by Academy Award Best Actress Nominee Sally Kirkland. Another opening day favorite of Savage is “Where Hope Grows,” which Chris Dowling wrote and directed. He was the director of the Idyllwild 2010 best film, “Rock Slyde.” His latest movie, “Where Hope Grows,” is about a former pro ball player who befriends a grocery store clerk with Down syndrome and learns a life lesson. On Wednesday night, “Solitary,” written and starring Katherine Lee McEwan, will make its world premiere. The film is about a young woman returning home to her aging father who encounters the memories of her buried past. Adam Schomer is the featured filmmaker this year. His two documentaries, “One Little Pill” and “Polygon,” will be shown Friday, Jan. 9 starting at 11:45 a.m. See Festival, next page

Festival Continued from previous page The Rustic Theatre will be home for the week-long festival and Savage gushed about the quality of its ability to show these films. For a small-time facility, Shane Stewart has installed a completely digital film room. “The upgrades are amazing and the theater is beautiful. I know it’s costly,” Savage said. “The festival wouldn’t be here without the Rustic.” The other Idyllwild 2015 film venues are AstroCamp, the Caine Learning Center and one that hasn’t been identified. With the help of the fest, Savage hopes to help Stewart install a digital marquee and new doors to the theater seating. International film fans will again have many choices during the busy week. There will be films from many countries, including two from Iran. “They worked hard to get their visas to come here,” Savage said. Other countries represented in this category include Australia, Bra- Wolfgang Bodison, right, was one of the featured filmmakers at the 2014 Idyllwild International Festival of Cinema. zil, France and Mongolia. On Saturday, Jan. 10, three different seminars will be offered. These will cover topics such as raising capital, legal issues with distribution and Screen Actor Guild contracts and cost-effective filming. Idyllwild Film and Screen Acting Bootcamps Two Times A Year, Idyllwild Becomes A Film Academy Twice each year, in the spring and summer, Idyllwild International Festival of Cinema and Stephen Savage host more than 20 creative artists at The Idyllwild Screen Acting and Film Directing Bootcamps, in Idyllwild, Calif. These three-day intensive workshops encompass all aspects of on camera and behind the lens disciplines, allowing actors and directors looking to gain experience a chance to come together and hone their respective crafts. Original and source material, in the form of two page scenes, are handed out to groups, or “Teams,” of actors, producers and directors who come together over the course of a few days to create “Reel Worthy” material. The Bootcamps are an all inclusive package deal, providing lodging, work space, experienced coaches (actual working professionals), sound, camera, lighting crews and handson training for both the seasoned filmmaker looking to work his or her chops and actors looking to gain more actual on camera experience. All in the beautiful surroundings of the charming village of Idyllwild. This is not a 48-hour Film Festival. Both film and commercial workshops are offered as well as green-screen and real location set experience. For directors, this training is with real pros, guiding you on how best to visualize a scene with your provided cinematographer and editor, setting a shot list, and working with actors developing character and scene structure, then getting out there and making magic. For actors, these workshops provide actual on camera experience, allowing you to walk away with disciplines that only working on a real film set, with a crew and director, can provide. And you come away with a fully edited scene, with great sound, color and music, ready to post on your web sites and social media, to demonstrate your talents to perspective agents, managers and producers. Special Guest Speakers The Idyllwild Screen Acting and Film Directing workshops are always graced by some of Hollywood’s most revered professionals, allowing you a chance to get close, real-time advice from working film and commercial actors, and experienced filmmakers, on what it means to work in the industry and how best to move your career forward.

After that project, I focused solely on writing original screenplays and TV scripts and getting them into production; I really wanted to get on set. So I decided to produce. In 2012, I pulled up on my computer the short script I wrote in 2010, “El Doctor,” and realized that it had to be my first production. I got the dream team director Heather de Michele and directory of photography Robert Webb on board; I fundraised and hired crew with the invaluable help of producer Reena Dutt, and less than two months later we were on set. And less than two years later, “El Doctor” sold to PBS and Latino Public Broadcasting. In between 2012 and now, I’ve written and produced several other projects because I – well, I love making movies.

I’ve always been a storyteller and wrote short stories from a very young age. I also grew up doing community theater and loved acting, but when I was 13, something switched in me – an inexplicable urge, like falling in love – and I knew I had to work behind the camera. That was it. I spent that summer researching film schools, and I wrote my first screenplay that year. Now, having been to film school, worked at a studio, directed content for and with celebrities, and done a fair bit of run-and-gun indie production, I can see how those early years of exploration served me. I acted in probably 20 or so stage productions growing up, and having delved into character studies and stood where my actors stand really helps build a space of trust and open communication. I directed a couple of shorts in college, I’ve helmed a handful of commercials now, and to my surprise I wound up as the showrunner for Ashton Kutcher, directing folks like Gary Busey and Jason Bateman. But all the while I knew I was on a path to directing features, and my best move lately was kidnapping Jude to develop content with me. “All In” will be my first feature. SS: Can you tell us a little bit about the new script, “All In”? JR: “All In” is the story of two best friends who’ve been secretly totally in love with each other since they met in college several years ago. SS: What would you say is the main appeal of Idyllwild as a location for your new project? JR: The main appeal of Idyllwild as a location is twofold: 1) how remote and in the wilderness one can feel with charming civilization just around the corner; and 2) the support of Film Idyllwild and you! Making movies is a business, obviously, and a tough one, but it’s also a very personal business to us, which is one of the reasons it’s so fulfilling – so having the personal support of filmmakers in this area, working in a community so devoted to film makes it feel less “transactional,” more creative, more collaborative, and frankly more doable. Film Idyllwild Continued from page 11 SS: At first, you discussed with me how you planned to shoot your film very lean and mean, utilizing only one or two locations. Then I let you know that, with Film Idyllwild’s help, you’d be able to maximize and expand on your locations, and still stay within your budget and daily page count. Was that a surprise to you as filmmakers? DB: Well our story is very simple in terms of setting and logistics, but it’s intriguing knowing we could add even a couple of shots to ground it in a more specific environment without affecting our budget. After story development, our focus has been on budget management, so thanks to both the accessibility and charm of Idyllwild locations, we have the chance to infuse the story with more color and flavor. Idyllwild is a romantic town, and since we’re telling a romantic story, we want the audience to fall in love with everything about “All In” — the characters, the setting and the town. SS: California is notoriously the worst state (worse even than New York) when it comes to offering up incentives that might otherwise keep production going here in our state, which is why so many films are shot elsewhere. However, the new Riverside County Film Commission and Film Idyllwild have put into place a program wherein film permits are waived for up to ten days of production, and filmmakers are charged no taxes on lodging, etc. How much help do you feel these incentives will be to your production? JR: These incentives are so crucial. We’re not looking at a huge budget, cast, or crew but it’s a movie nonetheless – and with so many moving parts to making a movie, anything that can be made easier, like the permit waivers, or less expensive, like the tax-free lodging makes it a no-brainer to come here and shoot.

SS: How are you guys funding your project? DB: We’re looking at funding three ways: through crowd-funding sites, personal connections, and – with our third producer Marco De Molina – small studios.

This 100-plus acre ranch is set high on a hill, surrounded by park land with views of Lake Hemet in the distance. The Duntley Ranch has three homes and a guest house plus a 3,500 sq. ft. Barnmaster Barn with pine interiors, oversize insulated box stalls, full kitchen and bathroom. The tack room is mahogany – truly a beautiful and functional barn. Paddocks, arenas, garages, equipment and a hay barn – it is all here, a complete ranch dream. The infrastructure built on this property includes an 80,000-gallon pond, multiple private wells and water storage tanks, and 3 phase electric. Much of the land has been cleared of scrub bushes and it has its own riding trails. The property could be subdivided into 10 acre parcels or enjoyed as your own Ponderosa.

Documentaries offer adventure, danger and information Schomer’s explorations are thrilling, chilling By J.P. Crumrine Idyllwild Town Crier Adam Schomer is the featured filmmaker for the 2015 Idyllwild International Festival of Cinema. Schomer is being recognized for his documentaries that both excite and reveal. An adventurous documentarian is who Schomer is now, but that’s not where he starts nor finishes. After graduating from Cornell in 1997, Schomer’s adventuring and risk-taking began to evolve. First, he headed to Ecuador to learn Spanish and play soccer. After all, he was an all-Ivy League soccer player. Since then he has learned and practices yoga, taught it to the Los Angeles Galaxy professional soccer team and began writing comedy at Second City. In 2010, he went to India to study meditation and his teacher invited him on a motorcycle trip through the Himalayas, which was the beginning of his documentary-making career. “The Highest Pass” was Schomer’s first documentary and has won several awards since its release. “I fell in love with the adventure and the filmmaking. It’s what you learn making a film,” he said. “But I’m learning to seize life. There’s something bigger than ourselves.” His work at Second City and work on children’s films were important contributions to his apprenticeship. “I was learning the craft of story telling through film, setting a pace,” Schomer said. However, Idyllwild 2015 will feature Schomer’s two most recent documentaries: “One Little Pill” and “The Polygon.” All of his films have a common denominator, “One thing I try to look for and find is a journey and follow it in real life.” “One Little Pill” is about the Sinclair method for treating alcohol abuse. In contrast to Alcoholics Anonymous, which relies

on conscious and mental discipline to avoid alcohol, the Sinclair method is medicinal. Naltrexone has been demonstrated to reduce the craving for alcohol and to block the effects of opiate medication, according to the National Institute of Health. Taken in large doses, it can cause liver disease. But Schomer and his producer, who financed the film through crowd funding, wanted to bring attention to this method, which has been kept under wraps for many years. Actress Claudia Christian has been a proponent of the Sinclair method, since it saved her life in 2009. “For most people, there is only one way to stop alcoholism — abstention. But this opens the eyes to another,” Schomer said. “The Polygon” takes the view to a Kazakhstan village that lies just 18 kilometers from a former Soviet nuclear test site — Semipalatinsk. More than 400 nuclear tests were conducted at Semipalatinsk test site, also known as “The Polygon.” Many of the tests were above ground. The soil and water contain radiation and these people live with this condition daily. And according to the film’s production site, “Those that live near this area every day battle with high cancer rates, leukemia, deformations, irradiated food, irradiated water and even irradiated DNA which passes on from generation to generation.” When asked if he had any trepidations spending two months in the area filming, Schomer replied, “Yes, absolutely. I may have chosen to make the stakes higher. It was a real big risk to go there. “We took a lot of precautions. We didn’t drink the water and were always buying bottled water,” Schomer explained. “But those people live there and have high cancer rates.” Idyllwild 2015 will not be Schomer’s first time in Idyllwild. He’s been here before and showed his first film, “The Highest Pass.” Afterwards, one of the au-

dience arranged for him to meet Stephen Savage, the IIFC director. “Idyllwild is special. I like the town’s energy and it’s a pleasure to return,” Schomer said. For those who want to experience Schomer’s adventures, his films will be shown starting at 11:45 a.m., Friday, Jan 9, at the Rustic Theatre.

IIFC, Pay It Forward Media and Summerhawk Pay It Forward Media (PIFM) is an international non-profit program designed to teach teenagers and young adults valuable skills in a wide array of media platforms. So, when Idyllwild International Festival of Cinema executive producer Trinity Houston asked festival founder and director Stephen Savage if he would join her on the PIFM board of directors, it seemed a perfect fit. Having sought out nonprofit educational partners for the festival over the past six years, Savage viewed Ms. Houston’s offer as just what the doctor ordered; a marriage of two entities that might bring together young people passionate about motion picture and visual artists, and a film festival interested in furthering its scholastic outreach. Having taught at both the American Film Institute and the Screen Actors Guild Conservatory, Savage had pondered since 2010 (the festival’s first year) how best to enhance IIFC’s educational possibilities. Finally he began plans with Ms. Houston and their good friend Irene Bedard (the voice and model of “Disney’s Pocahontas”) for The Summerhawk Institute; a new film, music and acting academy for under represented youth, specifically Native Americans, under the auspices of the Film Festival itself. But they needed a partner who understood nonprofits and how best to build an educational entity on a solid foundation of experience. PIFM gave them what they were looking for. And, after meeting and getting to know the members of the PIFM board, Savage and company dove in head first, and the charitable organization and the film festival organizers officially joined forces in 2014. Now, 2015 marks the first year of partnership for PIFM and IIFC, and the fund raising activities you will see proliferating the film festival this year are just the beginning of what IIFC and Pay It Forward Media have in store for the future. Getting filmmaking, editing, and design tools into the hands of young people from all walks of life, and developing determined efforts to make the Summerhawk Institute a reality, are goals that will be the hallmark of the film festival throughout the coming years. And we are happy that our 2015 guests are the first to join us in making these dreams and passions a reality. You can learn more about Pay It Forward Media by visiting their web site @ www.payitforwardmedia.org

Exciting New Entertainment Sponsorship Partners For IIFC 2015 IIFC is proud to introduce two new entertainment sponsor-partners this year; Daisy Rock Guitars and The Ramona Bowl Association. Daisy Rock Guitars, and its visionary founder and president Tish Ciravolo, bring something very new to Idyllwild 2015: a solid branding and marketing savvy that will no doubt pave the way for other large entertainment entities that are sure to follow in the coming years. As a longtime musician, Ms. Ciravolo began the company with the premise that, a guitar built specifically for girls, was long overdue. Standard guitars are often too big and bulky for the young female form. When she first started playing bass as a teenager, the instrument felt like a bat in her female-sized hands. At times, she wanted to quit because she felt like maybe the instrument just wasn’t for her, or that she wasn’t good enough to play it. As an adult, she encountered many female musicians who had experienced the same set of feelings, and she begin to believe this was the reason for the lack of female guitar-playing musicians in popular music. Out of this

frustration, Daisy Rock Guitars was born. Daisy Rock is a line of high-quality instruments that are both attractive and a perfect fit for girls, giving them an opportunity to build their self-assurance through music. As the Official Sponsor of The Alfred Music/Daisy Rock Guitars Outstanding Female Composer Award, which will be featured as a separate but invaluable part of the Mary Austin Women In Independent Film awards, Daisy Rock Guitars has come right out of the gate helping to elevate the IIFC experience for woman filmmakers in a huge way. (www.daisyrock.com) The Ramona Pageant, California’s Official State Play, has been performed continuously each spring since 1923, in the beautiful 5,000-seat Ramona Bowl Amphitheater in Hemet, California. As its new Executive Creative Director, and as the the author of a brand new adaptation of the play, written specifically for a modern audience, IIFC founder Stephen Savage was exited to bring the Ramona Bowl Association on board as a new sponsorship partner for the 2015 season. Savage, along with RBA pres-

ident Lori VanArsdale, VP Tami Wilhelm, and the play’s artistic director Dennis Anderson, are bringing a bold new vision to Ramona for the 2015 season, which runs for three weekends, April 18-19, 25-26, and May 2-3, 2015. More fast riding cowboy action. More music and dancing, and of course, more romance. Based on Helen Hunt Jackson’s 1884 novel and the origin 1923 play by Garnet Holme, Savage’s version of this time honored tale, which he and Anderson describe as Romeo and Juliet meets Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, is

sure to have audiences on their feet with excitement. After its premiere staged reading at the Wells fargo Theater at the Autry Western Heritage Museum in Los Angeles, where the all star cast of name Hollywood talent reading the characters was given a standing ovation, Savage, Anderson, and the RBA board of directors feel confident that The New Ramona will fly into its 100th season in 2023 on the wings of eagles, with just as much heart as it ever had. “Come see Ramona again, for the first time.” www.ramonabowl.com
