Regional rrowhead Medical Center recently contracted with the Southland Farmers’ Market Association to host a weekly Farmers’ Market. The overarching goal behind the Farmers’ Market is to bring healthy food into the community; provide our patients and community residents the opportunity to purchase fresh picked items, healthy breads and other snacks. According to the 2011-12 California Health Interview Survey, conducted by the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) Center for Health Policy Research, in collaboration with the California Department of Public Health and the Department of Health Care Services, 69% of adults who live in San Bernardino County are overweight or obese. The percentage of overweight and obese adults is an indicator of the overall health and lifestyle of the community. Statistics show individuals who are overweight or obese have a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes, gallbladder disease, heart disease, hypertension (high blood pressure), dyslipidemia (high cholesterol), osteoarthritis, stroke, sleep apnea, and even cancer.
