iffany Guzman, 20, experienced hardship growing up. The San Bernardino Valley College Biology student said it wasn’t her goofy attitude, nor her conservative church upbringings that made her life difficult.
At the tender age of 6, she found out she was diagnosed with Cancer. “I was a hospital kid growing up,” she explained of always having to visit the hospital to receive chemotherapy treatment. Guzman managed to remain positive throughout, explaining that the nurses and doctors helped her cope by keeping her company. At age 10,

ent Taylor is looking to return back to his old stomping grounds. Serving in the Colton Joint Unified School District for 12 years before moving to Southern Kern to become their district’s superintendent, Taylor will be seeking a trustee seat on board of education. Regional rrowhead Medical Center recently contracted with the Southland Farmers’ Market Association to host a weekly Farmers’ Market. The overarching goal behind the Farmers’ Market is to bring healthy food into the community; provide our patients and community residents the opportunity to purchase fresh picked items, healthy breads and other snacks. According to the 2011-12 California Health Interview Survey, conducted by the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) Center for Health Policy Research, in collaboration with the California Department of Public Health and the Department of Health Care Services, 69% of adults who live in San Bernardino County are overweight or obese. The percentage of overweight and obese adults is an indicator of the overall health and lifestyle of the community. Statistics show individuals who are overweight or obese have a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes, gallbladder disease, heart disease, hypertension (high blood pressure), dyslipidemia (high cholesterol), osteoarthritis, stroke, sleep apnea, and even cancer.
