fter 12 years of helping Colton High Students receive scholarships to help pay for college, the Wilson Scholarship Committee will be holding its final scholarship celebration on Saturday October 4 at Veterans Park in Colton.
It marks a difficult end to the committee’s work, though most of the committee members reminisce in delight about the different students they have benefited throughout the years. Professional artist and committee chairman Ernie Colunga of San Bernardino pulled out some letters from past recipients. He said read-
ing them serves as a reminder that the hard work the committee puts forth to offer financial assistance to students in need was worthwhile. “A lot of these kids were sitting on the fence,” said Colunga. “Most of the students we’ve helped were first time college attendees.” Scholarships on next page

ennifer Araiza’s work in the community is based on a strong philosophy. “I’m not waiting to get elected,” she said. “You can’t sit out and wait. You have to go out and just do it.” The mother of five will be running for a position Colton Joint Unified School District’s Area 3 in the upcoming November election. Araiza has an extensive background in the non-profit sector. She served on a Boys and Girls Club committee in Barstow for several years before founding the REC Center. The organization strives on providing educational, recreational, and art opportunities to the communities of Bloomington, Highgrove, and San Bernardino. She was motivated to run for the Area 3 two-year term seat due to her belief that there is a void in community governing. The two-year-old organization Araiza, cont. on next page
