he late Toribio “Toby” Flores symbolized the spirit of the hardworking resident. Arriving in the United States in the 1940’s as a bracero, he was employed as a salesperson, and as a mechanic for both the Santa Fe railyard–until he eventually opened up his own business, Toby’s Market in South Colton. “My grandpa owned that store for many years,” said Toby’s grandson Dan Flores. “He would help a lot of folks and families who didn’t have money for bread and food and would still let them take it home. Sure enough these same people would come back on payday to pay him back. His help and understanding meant a lot to people.” The 35-year-old Colton Joint Unified School District trustee said the rich history of his family is what motivated him to work as a public servant. “Stories like those of my grandpa Toby is what I like to remember as I go out and try to help my community,” Flores said. “His story serves as a reminder of why we need to help each other out.” The young Flores, a Colton High graduate (Class of 1997), received the oppor-
