n celebration of the 204th anniversary of Mexico's Independence from Spain in 1821, it's tradition that the President of Mexico delivers the traditional El Grito de Dolores, Mexicanos, Viva Mexico! at midnight on September 15. It marks the celebration of the events and people that resulted in independence from Spain after three centuries of oppression. It was on September 16, 1810 just before dawn that Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a respected and well educated Catholic priest, called to arms the indigenous Indians and mixed mestizos. It was the first step in the bloody struggle for independence that lasted eleven years. In the Inland Empire this event will be marked by the regional Mexican consul, Mrs. Carolina Zaragoza Flores with a celebration at California State University, San Bernardino starting at 6 p.m. on Monday, September 15, 2014.The event will feature a cultural program and food representing the different states of Mexico as well as the official Grito.
