World War II veteran Gilbert Zamorano stands next to his medals and awards.
ilbert Zamorano, like many other Mexican-American World War II veterans from Colton, enlisted in the military to serve the U.S. overseas. Similarly to the other noble servicemen and women, Zamorano overcame adversity in an era dominated by segregation and discrimination. Born on November 25, 1923, the longtime Colton resident was among the thousands of young men that fought valiantly against the Axis Powers in Europe. Zamorano’s impressive military resume includes the Bronze Star, a European Theater of Operations Medal, a Good Conduct Medal, the Victory Medal, an American Defense Medal, the Purple Heart and a Combat Infantry Badge. Yet the 91-year-old said he experienced some difficult times growing up in the once segregated barrio of South Colton during the Great Depression era, and continued to experience discrimination in his adult years. “I remember traveling to Little Rock for basic training. We made a stop in Texas to grab something to eat,” Zamorano said. “I remember seeing a sign that said, ‘No Dogs or Mexicans Allowed’. I began to cry. I couldn’t understand why these people were so mean.” Zamorano cont. on next page
