aul J. Rogers was honored posthumously at the elementary school that bears his name on Thursday March 5 in a ceremony conducted by students, faculty, and staff. Rogers’ grandson Alan Harris attended the ceremony, which featured a performance from the Colton High School Jazz band and appearances by district administration and staff. Harris said he was surprised to see the various creative presentations that honored his grandfather. “I didn’t think it was going to be as awesome as it was,” Harris said. “It was just really cool.” Rogers, originally from Porterville, moved to Colton in 1939 to take the position of principal at Woodrow Wilson Elementary School. Five years later, he became superintendent of the district–a position he held for 22 years (1944-1966). According to the Colton Courier’s coverage of the school’s dedication ceremony that took place on April 29, 1967, Rogers said in 1944 only 68 teachers and 1,800 students made up the district. By the end of his tenure, the number grew to 160 teachers and 4,500 students. During Rogers’ leadership, the district was able to modernize several school buildings and develop new structures. CJUSD is accepting enrollment applications for next year’s kindergarten class. The Colton Joint Unified School District Priority Open Enrollment for Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten Registration for 2015-2016 school year began this month. Completed enrollment packets will be accepted at the child’s home school every Wednesday starting February 11, 2015 and continuing through March 18. Parents should contact their school’s office for enrollment hours and can locate their school using the School Site Locator link at www.cjusd.net or by calling (909)580-6580. Registration packets are available at the enrollment link on the district website and at the elementary schools’ offices.
