R

ep. Pete Aguilar announced that three San Bernardino County community health centers and health care providers will receive a total of $10,210,625 in American Rescue Plan funds to expand COVID19 vaccination access and care. This round of funding is targeted to provide relief to lower-income communities and ensure health equity. The resources stem from the American Rescue Plan, President Biden’s landmark law to help American communities beat the coronavirus crisis. Aguilar helped pass the American Rescue Plan on March 10, 2021. As a result of the American Rescue Plan becoming law, the following Inland Empire Community

Health centers and providers will receive funding: • SAC Health System: $5,526,125 • Inland Behavioral and Health Services: $1,822,750 • County of San Bernardino: $2,861,750 “I was proud to help pass the American Rescue Plan because it delivers this type of direct relief to communities like ours. Throughout this crisis, community health centers have taken the lead to ensure every Inland Empire resident has access to high quality care. Now, they’ll have the funding they need to continue expanding health care services and vaccina-

tion access to help us stamp out this virus and get our community moving again,” said Aguilar. “We are so grateful for this funding as it will go directly to expand the services to our patients and communities we serve. SAC Health System and our health care partners will use this funding to provide much needed health care to the most fragile residents in our region. We are thankful to Congressman Aguilar for his support of community health centers, and for this additional funding to improve the health of those who trust in us to provide high quality health care to the residents of the 31st Congressional District," said Dr. Jason Lohr, CEO of SAC Health System.

Community can support local Ronald McDonald House in Loma Linda until Apr. 25

A

s a result of the pandemic, the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern California (RMHCSC) are facing a decline in donations, despite the overwhelming need for the care and services provided through their local programs at the Ronald McDonald Houses, Ronald McDonald Family Rooms and Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times. To help raise funds for families who must travel far from home to access lifesaving medical care for their child, McDonald’s Southern California franchisees are launching an in-restaurant fundraiser to help bolster donations to RMHCSC and the families they serve by supporting the RMHCSC 2021 Walk for Kids Fundraiser. From April 1-25, customers can support RMHCSC and the Walk for Kids by donating $1, $2 or $3 when they order in the drive-thru

or at the register. Customers can also donate year-round with any order by rounding up their total order to the nearest dollar, with the difference going directly to RMHCSC. RMHCSC programs help more than 5,000 families every year by providing them with a place to stay near and even in hospitals with Ronald McDonald Houses and in-hospital Ronald McDonald Family Rooms. The 2021 Walk for Kids fundraiser, which kicked

off last month, is aiming to raise $2.4 million to support families in Los Angeles, Bakersfield, Pasadena, Long Beach, Orange County and Inland Empire. To support this program, head over to your nearest Southland McDonald’s restaurant or visit walkforkids.org for more information. All proceeds benefit RMHCSC providing comfort, care, and support to children and families in their time of need.

Webb will share a compelling message on entrepreneurship and equity for business leaders. As an African American entrepreneur, Reggie Webb has built a legacy that’s impact is felt well beyond his family business and extends into the neighborhoods where they live and work. Webb began his career with McDonald’s Corporation and in 1985 retired as vice president, responsible for Southern California, to become a franchisee. Today, Webb Family Enterprises owns sixteen McDonald’s restaurants across Southern California along with Webb Investments, Webb Consulting and the Cooperative Economic Empowerment Movement (CEEM). When the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors adopted a resolution in June 2020 declaring racism a

public health crisis, Reggie Webb joined the Countywide Vision Equity Element Group to promote and increase equity in San Bernardino County. “Each day brings more positive news on how we are dealing with COVID-19. Our County has worked hard to focus on health and safety and now we need to focus efforts on the future. This series will provide insight into where we can expect growth and where we need to emphasize recovery,” shared Hagman. “The County has many tools to help business and this series will provide a forum for that information as well as real takeaways from the business leaders who are helping to lead growth in the region.” To register for free, visit https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_5PsNMBluTvSUTVPcR2QvFA

an Bernardino Valley College (SBVC) students will now have more scholarship support available to help them achieve their career goals, thanks to the generosity of Charles “Chuck” Obershaw (1926-2019) and his wife, Shelby Obershaw, long-time SBVC benefactors and community leaders. The Chuck Obershaw Estate recently gifted more than $370,000 to an existing Obershaw endowment at the San Bernardino Valley College Foundation, expanding it to over $600,000. Proceeds from this endowment will provide 30 $1,000 scholarships annually for students pursuing careers in automotive, business, and entrepreneurship at SBVC. SBVC students can apply for these scholarships during the Foundation’s regular scholarship application period from October 1 to January 31 of every year. ine students graduated at the San Bernardino Community College District after training for a career that few people would even be willing to try. Basically, it involves handling a chainsaw while maneuvering around fully grown trees near utility lines. No problem, right? Not for San Bernardino resident Jesus Romero, 25, who said he likes the idea of working in a tree because it sets him apart. "Your office is outside," he said after the graduation ceremony. "I don't know how other people see it, but as long as I'm outside, that is enough for me." In their 200 hours of training, class instructors set about "getting students comfortable with heights,

with firmly attaching themselves, with moving about, and with rescues of other workers," said William Burley, the lead trainer and an employee of Mowbray's Tree Service in San Bernardino, one of the employers for the new graduates. Safety is paramount, Burley said, since statistics show that this can be one of California's most hazardous jobs. But someone has to prevent forest fires, right? So high-quality training is the priority. The San Bernardino Community College District agreed to lead the Southern California portion of the training for utility/arborists. At the same time, Butte-Glenn Community College District teaches Northern California classes.

As Shelby recalled, “He was a very hard worker. He would say, ‘If things don’t go your way, or as you plan…find another way’. He believed that you’re going to succeed if you can out-work everybody around you.” In addition to being named to the SBVC Alumni Hall of Fame, Chuck was recognized as a living legend in the community at the Assistance League of San Bernardino's 36th annual Headdress Ball. He was president of the San Bernardino Motor Car Association, the San Bernardino Area Chamber of Commerce, and the U.S. Air Force Association. He also served on the Board of Directors of the National Orange Show, the YMCA, and the Community Hospital of San Bernardino. His auto dealership received the Import Auto Dealer of Distinction award from the Sports Illustrated American International Auto Dealers Association. Other partners contributed to the kudos, including the Utility Arborist Association, the Tree Care Industry Association, IBEW Local 47, Mowbray's Tree Services, North American Training Solutions, California Conservation Corps, and SoCal Edison. "We admire you for the work you will do," said Dr. Anne Viricel, chair of the SBCCD Board of Trustees. She said her late husband was a wildland firefighter. "I know how important arborists are to keeping firefighters safe." SBCCD Director of Workforce Development Deanna Krehbiel said this is an educational collaboration that will keep communities safer from wildfire. There will be more classes of students coming through the San Bernardino Community College District and going out to work for utility companies and others who try to manage the interface between trees and electrical wires. "You did it!" she said to the graduates. "This was all you!"
