A small town sandwiched between the blue mountain ridge and La Loma Hills, the population of Grand Terrance is around 12,000 people. Like the city of Loma Linda, the reputation of the Blue Mountain City is known for its relatively low crime rate and a high median income for residents in the Inland Empire, around $61,000 a year, making it a desirable place to live. Although the honor of safety and prosperity is good and well, on the soccer side of things, Grand Terrace has yet to catch the wave of being a prominent hub for the game in the Inland Empire. Page A2 • Sept. 24, 2020 • Inland Empire Community Newspapers • Colton Courier Fisher the community, who was raised in the city, grew up playing locally and became a teacher of the game, and able to go back to continue the same pattern of civic mentorship of the game for the next generation. One example is coach Matt Fisher. From afar, passionate sports fans or savvy media outlets from any sport sees the coach as a leader on the field and in practice within the game. However, from the perspective of a coach, the principal difference from an average fan or media member's mindset is that leadership is to be applied outside of the field as well, not just during game day or practice. Coach Fisher brings this aspect to life after I got the opportunity to connect with him and learn more about his contribution to youth sports in Grand Terrace. Tell us your soccer story? What got you into the sport, was it one event or something that's been a part of your life? Soccer has been a significant part of my life since early childhood. I began playing at the age of four, playing recreational soccer then transitioning to the club level. Now, I spend most of my time coaching the Boys Varsity Soccer team at Grand Terrace High School, volunteering with coaching and player development at Grand Terrace Community Soccer Club and coach the Boys Tennis team in the Spring as well. Coaching is a major part of my life and something I enjoy doing. What level did you play growing up and as an adult? I began playing at the age of four for Grand Terrace Community Soccer Club until middle school, where I made the switch to club soccer. I then joined Corinthians Soccer Club, where I finished off my playing career. I still do play adult league soccer in Riverside, when I am not busy with coaching. Why soccer? Did you play other sports? Growing up as a child in Grand Terrace, I was always involved in soccer and baseball. It wasn't until
middle school where I fully began to focus on soccer solely. When I got to high school, I was introduced to tennis, which I totally fell in love with. How was your journey becoming a coach? How did you end up as GTHS coach? I began coaching in 2012 at the youth level at Grand Terrace Community Soccer Club, my childhood league. I've been away from the game capacity for about two years and sought to get back into it through coaching. After getting about a year of coaching experience, I was given my first high school coaching position, Head Girls Junior Varsity Coach at John W. North. After coaching there for a season, in 2014, the coaching position at Grand Terrace High School opened up (when I was in my 2nd year as an AVID tutor on campus) and applied for the Varsity position. I did not get the varsity position but instead was given the JV position, where we would go on to set a program record of 11 wins. The next season, I was appointed the Head Varsity Coach, where I still hold that position today. With everything going on with the pandemic and its effect on schools, what is your thought process with your team? Due to all of the uncertainty associated with the pandemic, we have had to learn to adapt and take it day by day. Usually, every summer, we put on a summer training camp to keep our players in shape. Also, inviting new players to get a feel for our program before the school year starts. But due to the pandemic, we were forced to cancel our "traditional" summer training. Instead, we came up with an 8-week summer training program (consisting of endurance, strength, and technical training) for players to be able to do at home. As school starts up again, we will look to create another training program to keep them working out as they wait for the clearance to return to the club. Based on your experience in playing/coaching or just watching, what do you think is the level of players from the Inland Empire compared to other players from other places?
The Inland Empire is rich with soccer talent. Some of the best US soccer players (Donovan, Bocanegra, etc.) have come out of this area, so we are stacked with soccer talent. It seems like every year there are a few teams from both girls and boys soccer high school teams in our area making deep runs in the CIF playoffs. Have you coached or worked with any players that achieved success? If so, what makes them stand out? I have had the pleasure of coaching several extremely talented soccer players during my tenure at Grand Terrace High School. A number have had the talent to play at the next level, but chose to pursue other endeavors and have been successful. I have had two players that have had the opportunity to play at the next level, Nick Hartzell (Mt. Sac) and Alex Magana (La Sierra University). Both were 4-year captains during their time in the program, being co-captain for three seasons. Both possessed excellent leadership skills on and off the field and made their teammates better. What's one positive and negative trait that IE players have in a general sense? I think one great trait that IE players possess is that they are extremely hard workers. Most come from working-class families, so a number of them have to work hard for what they want. I would say that they possess a great work ethic. As far as any negative traits go, from my experience, I can't think of any. Last question, when your career and involvement in soccer is over, what kind of legacy would you like to leave to the IE soccer community? My goal as a high school and youth coach in Grand Terrace is to prepare young soccer players for their life outside of soccer. I hope to develop socially responsible young adults that can positively impact the Grand Terrace community and society as a whole. I hope that people remember me for being a coach who loved his athletes and had their best interests at heart.

Giveaway giveaway is only required to bring along a screenshot of a 2020 census confirmation code. “If an individual or family shows up without a confirmation code, no worries. We can quickly assist them in completing the census here on-site or if they do not have a confirmation code because a numerator visited their home to collect this data, we will take their word,” continued Frye. He went on to share reasons why it’s extremely difficult to get people to fill out the census, and the reasoning is simple, there is no instant gratification. “When it comes to impoverished communities, families don’t feel or see the results right away. It’s easier to sell initiatives that are instant, but it’s difficult to sell a future minded concept. This is the reason why it’s so difficult for people to fulfill their participation
in being counted” Frye said. To push participation in the 2020 Census, CAPSBC implemented strategy into their initiative, mixing civic engagement with the giveaway. “Students will receive school supplies such as notebooks, rulers, binders, pens, pencils, K-12 books, and each family will be provided two boxes of food. Participants don’t even need to exit their vehicle, just wear a mask and pop open their trunks,” concluded Frye. At the giveaway, 2020 Census assistance will be available in both English and Spanish and 2020 voter registration will also be available. rivate elementary schools meeting the State’s requirements to allow in-person instruction may now participate in the County’s successful COVID Compliant Business Partnership program. Among other benefits, the program gives participants financial assistance while assuring staff, students and their parents that the school is following a series of stringent procedures designed to protect their health and safety. To date, 31 private TK-6th Grade schools in the County have secured waivers allowing them to open for in-person instruction. Several additional schools have submitted applications that are currently being reviewed by County and state public health officials. “We want to help sustain in-person instruction at schools
across the County and are encouraging them to apply for membership in the Partnership,” said Board of Supervisors Chairman Curt Hagman. “Participating schools can now obtain money to help with the acquisition of necessities such as personal protection equipment and disinfection supplies.” Eligible schools will receive funding based on their respective enrollment levels. Schools with up to 100 students can receive $2,500, those with 101 to 499 students can get $5,000, and schools with 500 or more students are eligible for $7,500. The more than 4,000 County businesses currently participating in the partnership have collectively received more than $10 million from the County to offset costs related to compliance with COVID-19-related public health protocols.
Applications will be accepted through Friday, October 30, 2020. A list of approved schools, along with everything a school needs to know about re-opening and staying open, can be found on a new County webpage dedicated to the waiver process and the guidelines for operating safely. To secure a waiver from State mandates forbidding in-person instruction, a school must complete a Waiver Application Cover Form showing that its local health jurisdiction has experienced fewer than 14 daily cases per 100,000 residents over the prior 14 days. San Bernardino County successfully worked with the State to secure consideration for schools located in communities that are meeting the State criteria even if the county as a whole is not.

ditional 17 million people could be food insecure in 2020 as a result of this crisis, bringing the total up to 54 million people. “Food banks are essential during times of crisis, and right now is no different. While we’ve distributed over 12 million pounds of food to families in the Inland Empire since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the reality is that hunger existed in the community long before the pandemic and that more of our neighbors – kids in our children’s classes, the barista at the local coffee shop, and those who may be unemployed – could be struggling to put food on the table,” said Stephanie Otero, CEO of FARSB. “Every action counts, and there’s no better way to support your local food bank, FARSB, then during Hunger Action Month®,” said Otero. FARSB is encouraging the community to come together during Hunger Action Month by using social media to leverage good. Social media followers and friends are encouraged to join in the fun, by participating with the food bank virtually, which will enter them into weekly prize giveaways hosted every Friday through the month of September on FARSB’s Facebook and Instagram accounts (@feedingamericaIE). Others can join in on the fun and win weekly prize giveaways by making $2 or more donations (equating to nearly 16 meals) by texting
HungerAction to 71777 or visiting www.FeedingIE.org/hungeraction. Each photo shared and $2 donation made is one entry into the weekly giving contest. Multiple entries are welcomed and encouraged as FARSB raises funds to support critical hunger relief efforts. Sharing, volunteering, pledging to advocate, fundraising and donating are just a few of the ways the community can pitch in. “We need your help now more than ever,” said Claire BabineauxFontenot, CEO of Feeding America. “Hunger in this country existed long before COVID-19, but the pandemic has thrust more and more of our neighbors into food insecurity, and food banks are responding to a sustained, increased demand. With support of the community, together we can end hunger one helping at a time.” September marks the thirteenth year the Feeding America network has organized this annual call to action. To learn more about FARSB and other ways you can get involved for Hunger Action Month in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties, please visit www.FeedingIE.org/hungeraction or HungerActionMonth.org. eptember is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and with so much widespread pain happening in our community and country, it seems even more important to remind ourselves of the resources available to help those struggling with the emotional toll these crises are presenting. When it comes to grief, unrest, and sadness – finding and maintaining courage is critical. Mental health is a critical issue that was on the rise in America before the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the National Institute of Mental Health Disorders, an estimated 26 percent of Americans age 18 and older already suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder. In fact, recent Census Bureau data about mental health amid COVID19 shows that a third of Americans are showing signs of clinical anxiety or depression. In light of recent events, we know that number is skyrocketing. We are being forced to accept new realities and stressors in a way that is simply unprecedented, and that can take a toll. The impacts are so great, that we cannot in good conscience stand by and not help each other through these challenging times. It is in times of crisis and uncertainty that our courage is tested. We must have the courage and heart to give hope and offer support to any family members and friends suffering from despair. We should also try with all our might to have that same courage and heart to recognize these needs within ourselves as well, keeping mental health top of mind. So, what can any of us do to help others and ourselves feel emotionally connected, valued, respected, and loved? Small but powerful actions can make a big difference. A smile and eye contact can establish a sense of human connection. Sometimes, just listening and being listened to. And of course, a kind word or compliment can make a world of difference. Let us have the courage to reach out to those who may be going
through a tough time. Remind them they are not alone- that you are there to support and care for them. Even though we are all practicing social distancing, it does not mean we can’t talk about health and social issues we are facing together. Offer help with day to day tasks, like grocery shopping or setting someone up on Zoom or Facetime. Your support can make someone else feel important. Making healthy connections to one another has a powerful effect. It can lower anxiety and depression and improve our overall immune systems. Have the courage to share or utilize resources, too. The Institute on Aging provides a great resource in the Friendship Line – the nation’s only 24-hour tollfree hotline for older adults and adults with disabilities – (800) 971-0016. The helpline is staffed by people who specialize in offering a caring ear and having a friendly conversation. “Chat and Chai,” a weekly podcast focusing on mental health is also available to our community. Hosted by Inland Empire Health Plan’s (IEHP) Behavioral Health Medical Director Gayani DeSilva, and Clinical Behavioral Health Director Amrita Rai, the podcast explores the connection between physical and mental health and provides practical advice and tools for the community. Episodes have covered topics including suicide, grief, weight loss, and more. To listen, simply find Chat and Chai on your favorite podcast platform, including Apple, Google and Spotify. We are all needed, we are all valued, and we all have a purpose. By working together and having the courage to continue to lift each other up, I truly believe we will come out of this year and into a brighter, healthier future. If you, or someone you care about, are feeling overwhelmed with emotions like sadness, depression, or anxiety, or feel like you want to harm yourself or others, please talk to someone. The Bengals and The Browns stood together Could this work for America? these words, "United We Stand, Divided We Fall." This is also the state motto for Kentucky. Of course, words are only words if they are not backed by action.
I haven't watched much professional sports over the last few months. Last Thursday I did tune into the Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns football game. My attention grew when I saw both teams on the field, arm in arm standing together for the national anthem. I didn't see three or four kneeling or one team in the locker room and another team on the field. I didn't see anyone standing on their heads or someone else doing flip flops or something else. Both teams were standing, arm in arm in attention for the national anthem. I watched the entire game. The Bengals and Browns played one of the best games I've watched in some time. The game was fun to watch.
The only way to deal with and overcome racial injustice in America is for all of us to stand together. We must all stand against inequality. There is no room for bad police in America. We must all stand against all police acts that are unfair and eliminate all police who are not mentally stable to wear a badge. We must fund and support those who do wear the badge and put their lives at risk to protect us. We need a strong and good police force in every American community.
What they did was so simple yet so profound. They stood arm in arm for the national anthem. On the state flag of Missouri, we find
If we will stand together in America, we can protect our nation from being over taken by evil forces. We can strengthen our in-
frastructure. We can keep our military strong. We can keep Social Security and Medicare solvent for our aging population. We can make healthcare accessible for every American regardless of income or preexisting conditions. If we stand together, we will find a vaccine for Covid-19. We can bring our strong economy back and America will continue to be a great country. What could happen in America if Congress would all stand together in unison for something? Regardless of the issue or the vote the other political party is demonized for their stance on almost every issue. What could happen if Congress would stand with our President and try to help him tackle our difficult national problems? Regardless of what he wants to do the Democrats fight him and undermine him. Regardless of what the Democrat's want to do the Republicans fight them. This isn't working for our country. What could happen if far left winged media in this country would stand with our President and try to help him? Instead, they fight him on his every move and every word. A nation is no greater than her people. America is filled with great people but we aren't a great country when we are fighting each other. The sure way to lose our country is to devour each other. If we devour each other, China, Russia, or whoever will take whatever is left. Then, they will be telling us when to stand, sit or kneel. We can keep our freedom if we stand together now. San Bernardino City Unified School District passes Student Voter Registration Policy aimed at increasing youth voter participation youth before the November election and turn these voters out to vote in support of young peoples’ priorities. Youth celebrate their win, After the passing of the “Student Voter Registration” policy. nland Congregations United for Change (ICUC) youth leaders have built a powerful culture of youth civic engagement over the past 15 years. In a region known for lawsuits and recalls of corrupt political officials, many youth have dropped out of civic life. Data from the Current Population Survey shows that in the 2018 general election, only 34%
of 18 to 24 year-olds reported voting. The results were similar for the 2016 presidential election, at 44%. Convinced that this crisis of civic disengagement reinforces entrenched political regimes in the region, ICUC youth have registered and turned out thousands of new youth voters across the Inland Region and engaged youth leaders with their school boards, city

On September 15th, 2020 the San Bernardino City Unified School District board unanimously passed the “Student Voter Registration” policy, the first of its kind in the region, which was brought to the school district by ICUC youth with support from school board members who understand young people's role in actively creating an environment in which democracy thrives. This was made possible with the leadership of the SBCUSD’s board president Gwen Rodgers and the policy subcommittee, which includes Abigail Medina, Dr. Barbara Flores, Dr. Margaret Hill and Dr. Scott Wyatt. After passing the resolution, Dr. Flores shared, “I want to commend the ICUC Youth and Leadership for their relentless pursuit, grassroots advocacy and resolved determination to participate in the Student Voter Registration Policy process and see it approved at the September 15th
SBCUSD School Board Meeting!”. Youth leaders are now organizing with the district administrators to implement the policy throughout the San Bernardino High Schools to ensure all eligible students have the opportunity to register to vote before November's election. The “Student Voter Registration” policy provides administrative guidelines around voter education, voter registration, and making high schools polling locations during elections. In Riverside and Coachella Valley Unified School Districts ICUC youth leaders are pressing for similar resolutions that pave the way to increase voter registration and the voting rights of youth. “Educating our youth in civic engagement is vital to the successful future of our democracy and our communities. Our youth have proven over and over that they are willing to work for a better tomorrow and a better world. It is essential that they learn how to use their voices to impact change around them,” said Assemblymember Reyes. “I am proud to have brought funding to ICUC to continue engaging our youth in civic engagement.”

an Bernardino Valley College (SBVC) has been named one of the best online community colleges in California in a recent announcement by national college ranking website Learn.org. In the wake of the global COVID-19 pandemic, most Inland Empire college students are continuing their educational jour-
neys remotely from the safety of their homes. From its incredibly low cost at $46 per unit, to its extensive availability of financial aid assistance and diversity of academic programs, SBVC continues to be a top choice for higher education in the region. In its selection of the top online
community colleges, Learn.org considered data from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) and the U.S. Department of Education and evaluated quality of programs, student outcomes, cost, accessibility, and other factors “critical to students’ academic decisions.” SBVC was ranked number 7 out of the top 25—out
of a total of 116—community colleges across California. The website also ranked SBVC as having one of the highest percentages of students receiving financial aid, at 82%. In addition to providing financial aid to students, the college has distributed hundreds of laptop computers and high-speed internet hotspots to students to facilitate online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic and kept its Valley 360 Resource Center (food pantry) open on campus, where students can pick up a free, pre-
packaged bag of food or hygiene items every week. SBVC offers an extensive variety of degrees and certificates fully online, such as administration of justice, anthropology, business administration, philosophy and sociology, as well as many more that are being offered virtually temporarily during Fall 2020 and Spring 2021. Oregon, Califor nia wildfires are not new the nor mal - it’s going to get wor se
T
he 2018 California wildfire season was the most destructive in recorded California history, with just under two million acres burned. Now here we are again, setting yet new records. It should come as no surprise. More frequent and more intense wildfires have long been predicted by scientists as but one consequence of climate change. So far in 2020, California has seen six of the largest twenty wildfires in its history, including the largest wildfire on record, the Mendocino Complex Fire which burned 410,000 acres. These and other smaller fires have destroyed a record 3.1 million acres of forest in the state so far this year, and, as this is being written, seven wildfires are still burning. The largest of these, the Bear Fire north of Sacramento (the same area devastated by the 2018 Camp Fire) has already burned through one quarter of a million acres and is only 23% contained.
In Oregon at least 50 wildfires have burned over half a million acres. As this is being written, four major wildfires each larger than 100,000 acres, are burning southeast of Portland causing the state to put half a million people under evacuation warning. Three small Oregon communities were substantially destroyed. Governor Kate Brown described rescue teams saving evacuees by pulling them from rivers where they had taken refuge from the flames. The unusual character of these fires was underscored by Jacob Bendix, a Syracuse University geography and environment professor, who said: “We have seen multiple fires expand by tens of thousands of acres in a matter of hours, and 30 years or more ago that just wasn’t fire behavior that we saw.” Climate change deniers are quick to point out that climate
change didn’t cause these fires. It’s true, but only in a technical sense. The fires were caused by drought, lightning, and hot, dry, windy weather – all conditions that can occur without climate change. But the increasing prevalence of these conditions is due to climate change, so the deniers’ statements ring increasingly hollow as the disasters get worse. (Note: Multifactorial disasters like this are what scientists call compound disasters which have also been predicted to occur with greater frequency and severity due to climate change.) “Experience keeps a dear school, but fools will learn in no other.” This Ben Franklin proverb sums up why we are now beginning to confront what is in store for us from climate change. We have ignored science for thirty years and now they are going to pay for it. Who are “they”? They are the children and grandchildren of the generation that caused this slow-
motion train wreck to happen. But the slow-motion part is quickly coming to an end as the pace of climate change accelerates, driven by the immense accumulation of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Sometime in the not too distant fu-
ture we’ll look back on the year 2020 and it will seem like halcyon days compared to what we will be living through then. Crisis management will no longer be an occasional event; it will be our constant companion.
