Although the city’s four recreation centers are now operating, they are still abiding by state guidelines and visitors will need to book a reservation before attending. “We’ve been closed since March 14, 2020, so it’s an awesome feeling to open our doors to the community again and provide outlets for families in the community to reconnect,” said Vanessa Carbajal, City of San Bernardino community recreation manager.

omen and girls in every corner of our world continue to face injustices simply because of their gender, including lower wages, poverty, and domestic violence. It’s for this reason that Soroptimist International, an organization of and by women, strongly believe that through education, economically empowered women can change the world around

them. Established since 1947, Soroptimist International of San Bernardino (SISB) has served the greater San Bernardino area through a variety of projects. Our mission to improve the lives of women and girls through programs leading to social and economic empowerment reaches locally and globally. One of our global programs is

the Live Your Dream Award. It’s a unique education grant for women enrolled in an undergraduate program or trade school who provide the primary financial support for their family. Many recipients are survivors of domestic violence, trafficking or sexual assault, and all have overcome enormous obstacles. The program begins at the local club level, and then the club recipient becomes

We were delighted to meet SISB’s 2021 Live Your Dream Award recipient, and one of our Golden West Region top 4 finalists, Michelle Morales. As a single mother raising two sons, one who is autistic needing continual care and therapy and another just starting college, she did what many of us fear the most…start again. After she lost her retail job due to the pandemic, she decided to invest in herself by returning to school at American Career College to become a respiratory therapist. She always dreamed of having a career in the medical Recreation ments that have been missed heavily over the course of the past 14 months, from parents and children alike - especially in underserved communities. “San Bernardino’s recreation centers provide an outlet for many and an opportunity to develop integrate social skills while learning new facets within the arts and different cultures, while also providing an array of activities and programs,” continued Carbajal. Aside from reopening, the department is elated to share news about its current programming, which includes its Individual Development Program and the continuation of its Starlight Cinema: Movies Under the Stars. “Our department is proud of our Center for Individual Development Program participants, as it's aimed towards those living with a disability,” Carbajal said. “This type of programming, where we can provide recreation opportunity for our disabled population was heavily needed in our city.” Many residents in the city have also praised the department for its inclusiveness with its programming, especially for its Starlight Art how talented Inland Empire students are. This year’s submissions captured the diversity of cultures and backgrounds that make up our community, and I’m so proud to have the chance to share original artwork and showcase the talents of the Inland Empire with my colleagues in the US Capitol,” said Aguilar. “The inspiration for my piece was my grandma Lupe and Vicky. Love for our family is a huge part in Mexican culture, especially our grandmas. Her home was always welcoming and loving. I was lucky to personally spend so much time with them, drawing, embroidering, the church fiestas, learning about our family and cul-

field and saw the high need for respiratory therapists when people were struggling to breathe due to COVID-19. Although it has been difficult financially, she is excelling in school and determined to show her sons to “never give up on your dreams and it’s never too late to start again.” Michelle’s drive to achieve and desire to help others inspired one of her references to go back to school as well. SISB is always looking for women who care about making an impact and difference in our community. Contact us at sisanbernardino@soroptimist.net for the opportunity to directly change the lives of women and girls. Our meetings are a combination of virtual and in-person. Cinema events being held in different locations of the city each week to hit every neighborhood and give those without transportation an opportunity to enjoy a movie under the stars. “We’re also happy to continue our Starlight Cinema: Movies Under the Stars. They are always a highlight for our community, getting them to enjoy a movie outside and strengthen that family connection; our movies start at dusk every Friday,” continued Carbajal. Some other areas of programming include arts and crafts and an array of activities within its science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs. “As the county and city moves towards re-opening, we look forward to continue growing, add more programming and events to the parks, recreation and community services department. We’re also currently seeking volunteers (ages 12 and up) and interested community members can apply online,” concluded Carbajal. All City of San Bernardino recreation centers are open Monday - Friday, noon to 6 PM.

ture. If you ever needed somewhere to go, grandma's house was the place to be. Winning the art competition means everything. My grandma Vicky would be so proud and my family is so happy she gets to live on in the painting that will be in the Capital. She is such a special woman. I'm glad I was able to give her this, she always believed in me. I truly am grateful for this opportunity. In the future I wish to have my own art studio. I wish to make more cultural pieces and continue to make myself proud!” In addition to being featured in the US Capitol, “Grandma’s House” will be available to view on Aguilar.house.gov and on the official US House of Representatives website.

an Bernardino County, along with the rest of the state, fully reopened its economy on Tuesday — eliminating various restrictions and saying farewell to the color-coded county tier system we’ve been living under for the past several months.

This states: “Fully vaccinated people can resume activities without wearing a mask or physically distancing, except where required by federal, state, local, tribal, or territorial laws, rules, and regulations, including local business and workplace guidance.”

Beginning Tuesday, everyday life here will largely return to preCOVID norms. Restaurants, bars, retail stores, theaters, hotels and entertainment centers may return to usual operations — meaning no capacity limitations and no requirements for social distancing.

This means while fully vaccinated individuals won’t need to wear face coverings in most indoor and outdoor settings, they will still be required to wear a mask on planes, buses, trains, airports and transportation stations. Other places where vaccinated people will still need to wear masks, include health care settings, prisons, homeless shelters and schools. In addition, private businesses may choose to continue requiring facial coverings.

All of California's restrictions on travel outside the state will be lifted, and the state says it is not considering creating a vaccine passport. “This is a day we’ve all been waiting for,” said Board of Supervisors Chairman Curt Hagman. “While we have been through one of the most challenging periods in our County’s history, I’m very proud of the way we’ve pulled together as a community — with everyone from hospital workers and grocery clerks to local business owners working together to protect each other and overcome this pandemic.” The question of masks On Tuesday, California and San Bernardino County will align with the revised mask guidelines recently announced by the CDC.

And of course, anyone is free to wear a mask anytime they’d like, especially when around children and others who are vulnerable or not yet eligible for vaccination. Unvaccinated or partially vaccinated individuals will still be required to wear facial coverings outside of their home. Unvaccinated Californians, can only take off their masks in public when they're outside and can maintain 6 feet of distance with others. As for workplaces, Gov. Gavin Newsom said that he expects State Division of Occupational Safety and Health, better known as Cal/OSHA, to vote on Thursday to

allow vaccinated employees to go maskless in California workplaces. Those not vaccinated would still have to wear masks when working indoors or in vehicles. If Cal/OSHA does that, Newsom said he would immediately issue an executive order to put the new rule into effect immediately. New County health order An additional sign that life is returning to normal is a new county health order just signed by the County Health Officer designed to align practices at health care facilities with statewide guidelines. The new county health order aligns with California Department of Public Health guidance by encouraging rather than requiring health care facilities to conduct some form of wellness screening at their entrances. The new county health order also makes it clear that there are no county-imposed face-covering requirements in San Bernardino County. Guidelines set forth by the California Department of Public Health, based on greatly-relaxed guidance from the CDC, continue to apply to all jurisdictions within the state and cannot be mitigated by any action at the county or city level. The new county health order will be reviewed by the Board of Supervisors at a public meeting within 30 days in accordance with

Caden Center How much luck do you need to win an NBA championship?

T

he NBA playoffs are underway and it has been quite the month of basketball: LeBron James going down in the first round after Anthony Davis got injured; Nikola Jokic leading the Nuggets to the second round without Jamal Murray; and the Nets “big 3” struggling to stay healthy. After watching Sunday night’s Suns vs. Nuggets game where the Suns completed the second round sweep, I looked at what the Suns have gone through. They played against an injured AD with the Lakers, a Nuggets team without their second option in Jamal Murray, and in game 4 without Nikola Jokic for a half when he was ejected. No disrespect to the Suns but, it makes me wonder, how much luck do you need to win the NBA Finals? Let’s take a look.

First, let me start off with the one common trait of championship teams. Good defense. Since the NBA/ABA merger 45 years ago, the championship team has averaged 5th in defensive rating. And in the past 20 years, only 2 champions have been outside the top 10 in defensive rating. So, before we get into the lucky side of things, let’s remember for a team to win a championship, they will have good defense. It’s as simple as that. The biggest “luck” aspect of NBA champions however has to be their team staying healthy, and other teams not. Going down the list of previous champions, we have the 2020 Lakers. They were all healthy in the bubble other than Anthony Davis, who had an ankle injury but played through it just fine. However, in the playoffs, they only had to see Dame in 2/5 games due to a finger injury. Then in the finals vs. the Miami Heat we saw Bam Adebayo & Goran Dragic both miss games in the finals. But, it doesn’t end in the bubble. In 2019, the Toronto Raptors won the championship. In the NBA finals against the Warriors, however, Kevin Durant & Klay Thompson both missed games with major injuries, and Stephen Curry was left to try to do things by himself. But, the Warriors had

some good luck of their own. In 2015 against the Cavs, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love both missed games in the series due to injuries. Leaving LeBron to do all the heavy lifting, which he could not. In 2018, CP3 went down with an injury in the WCF, and the Warriors won that series en route to the title. Not to mention the year before where Kawhi Leonard went down and the Spurs were taken out of the race. And all this is just in the last 6 seasons. The list goes on and on and on. As with any sport or anything in life really, you need a lot of luck, specifically in this instance with injuries, if you want to win an NBA title. Many NBA fans tend to take these injuries and try to put an asterisk or devalue the team’s championships. But that’s just wrong. Basketball is a game of adjustments and to win a championship it takes a full effort and high commitment level from all 15 guys on the roster. Every champion should be honored equally. But, just know, if you want your team to win the title, you better hope they stay healthier than the other contending teams. the County Charter. Mega events Also, what the state deems “mega events” — outdoor live events attended by more than 10,000 people and indoor events with 5,000 or more attendees — still face some restrictions. Those attending indoor events must either be vaccinated or have re-

cently achieved a negative COVID-19 test. The same guidelines are recommended (though not mandated) for outdoor events. Businesses and venue operators may require proof or self-attestation at point of registration, during ticket purchase or on the day of the event prior to entry into the venue. The mega event requirements will remain in place until October 1.

You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property,

NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an "eligible tenant buyer," you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. Time to Celebrate: Project Rebound g raduates 11 this year By Eric Sandoval

P

roject Rebound of California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) celebrated 11 graduates this past Saturday, June 12. When speaking with the graduates, they were grateful for Project Rebound helping them get to this point. “They’ve been the light in the darkness,” shared Marta Barretto, member and graduate. “They’ve pushed me to go forward, thanks to Project Rebound I am starting my Master’s Program in Business Administration.” Stories like Marta’s are what Project Rebound strives for. They want their members to believe in themselves so they can reach their goals. In the five years operating at CSUSB, Project Rebound has built a family. During the graduation celebration, the unity they have is palpable. In addition to graduates, those in attendance included new and former members, student interns, and their directors who intermingled, chatted, and interacted as a family. Project Rebound has a strong connection between members and its employees, supporting each other in any way they can. “We have a tight-knit group, today feels like a family barbecue,” shared Kent Bonilla, graduate and member. “Project Rebound helped build my self-esteem, they gave me a space to

open up about my incarceration and not be ashamed.”

For many formerly incarcerated individuals being released brings a lot of stress and unknowns. What Project Rebound does is help these individuals in any way possible, whether it’s with school supplies, groceries, food or transportation. “For me, Project Rebound helped keep me in school. I was commuting from Los Angeles County to CSUSB, gas was $150 a week, they gave me gas cards to help get to school. On top of that, they helped with school supplies and books, I was grateful for this because they eased the financial

burden that comes with attending school,” shared Tabari Zahir, member and graduate.

Having Project Rebound to lean on gives members that sense of security. Having this outlet helps build the confidence and self-esteem of their members. “I felt like I didn’t belong in school, once I met Project Rebound they gave me that belief in myself that I can go and succeed in school,” said Gilbert Bao, new Project Rebound member. New members like Gilbert have clarity, having a plan and someone that believes in them can make all the difference.

“Project Rebound helped me out tremendously, without them I feel like I wouldn’t have graduated,” explained Kelly Colocho, member and graduate. The change Project Rebound is making in its members’ lives is tremendous. Speaking with members and graduates from Project Rebound really brings what they do to life. The graduation celebration is their crowning moment as an organization. Working with these students and seeing them graduate validates their belief in their members.

Speaking with Dr. Anderson Executive Director, Paul Jones, Director, Roberta Fox, Student Intern, and Wendi Withrell, Student Intern, they were thrilled to be able to come together to celebrate their graduates. Seeing the lives they’ve been able to help change is what makes it all worth it.

Project Rebound strives to help members reach their goals. They look at their members as people, which helps build their self-esteem. Stories from Project Rebound are amazing, they show what self-belief can accomplish. Regardless of your past, you can build a bright future.
