“I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to serve this outstanding education community for another four years I thank our parents for entrusting me with such a monumental task that I do not take lightly I want to preserve our Dis trict’s mission for excellence in academics, and our pledge of kindness I believe fostering com munity partnerships and educational opportuni ties for the benefit of our students and families is a job that never stops, but as long as we have dedicated staff and engaged families, there is no limit to the heights that the RUSD can achieve,” said Montes

This year ’s backpack drive marked the sixth and most suc cessful giveaway in the pro gram’s history The grassroots effort began with Fiscal Serv ices providing 50 backpacks in the first year of the giveaway Today the program continues to grow thanks to the generosity of various donors and RUSD staff, which works tirelessly through the summer to make the first week of school full of joy for hundreds of students KVCR KVCR’s educational programming, media ca reer training, and local journalism initiatives,” said Reyes Since 1962, the public media organization has been a leader in spotlighting community news Recently, San Bernardino Valley College’s Film, Television, and Media Department (FTVM) stu dents successfully produced and packaged a 6 episode TV show called Rhythm Lounge “This investment will improve our communi ties quality of life and increase opportunities for our youth by expanding KVCR in studio train ing for students headed into journalism and media careers SBVC is one of the few commu nity colleges in the nation that operates both an NPR radio and a PBS TV affiliate It’s vital to keep advocating and expanding this asset in our community,” concluded Reyes Mariana Lapizco, an SBVC student who has benefitted from an FTVM funded KVCR intern ship, said learning from the organization’s pro fessionals equips her to be highly prepared for her next endeavor an acceptance into USC’s film program and a career in media “I started SBVC as a business major because my family told me to pursue a secure major But last fall, I entered into the IE 48 Hours Film Project, a challenge where you write, shoot, and edit an entire short film in 48 hours, and that was my clicking moment,” said Lapizco After the film contest, she asked herself why she was not pursuing film full time; now, she is both a film and business major “I decided to apply for this internship last spring, and it has been life changing ever since Working with professionals in my internship has given my peers and I the confidence to continue striving for our dreams It has allowed us to get our hands on high tech equipment, preparing us for a future in the film industry In addition, KVCR is a great platform for communities across the Inland region as we highlight social justice issues that affect us all,” concluded Lapizco Like many in the community, the college’s Chancellor Diana Rodriguez expressed the im portance of public media organizations and strong leaders like Reyes “When Reyes was elected, she first asked me what I could do to help our students? What can I do to help our community? Then, when I be came chancellor last year, she asked me the same thing So I thought about those questions for a long time, and then I answered, KVCR,” said Rodriguez The San Bernardino Community College Dis trict owns the news organization, which has af filiations with PBS and NPR “KVCR struggled financially for several years, and its future was uncertain While we knew we would always have KVCR, we were unsure of its programming Can you imagine our children turning on PBS and Big Bird was gone? Can you imagine turning on the radio in the morning and NPR News not being there? I couldn’t bear the thought of that, and as always, the Majority Leader stepped up for the Inland Empire and fought in Sacramento to bring $15 million to help us here at KVCR,” concluded Rodriguez To learn more about KVCR, visit kvcrnews org T w o R i a l t o U n i f i e d S c h o o l D i s t r i c t B o a r d o f E d u c a t i o n c a n d i d a t e s a r e r u n n i n g u n o p p o s e d By Manny Sandoval Rialto Unified School District (RUSD) will have two items on the ballot come Election Day, November 8th, 2022, in cluding elections for a member of governing board area three and a member of governing board area five

“The Casey Elementary School community is very thankful for the generous donations,” Casey Elementary School Principal Emily Dominguez smiled “Every student left school that day with a backpack full of supplies and a smile on their face We received many posi tive comments from families expressing their appreciation " And when the students found “the one,” faces lit up Then came another big smile as stu dents inspected the inside of the backpacks and found note books, pencils, rulers, erasers and other school supplies “Our students were so excited to be able to go shopping for a brand new backpack They were even more thrilled when they found out it had supplies inside,” Preston Elementary School Principal Monica Rad cliffe Perez replied “All of our students felt so very special and the parents really appreciated the help with back to school needs ”

Due to the California Voting Rights Act, sev eral public meetings were held and the board of education took a vote in the latter part of spring to make a decision that the boundaries, areas of maps would be divided into five different sec tions; which includes the south end and the five trustee areas that each have a representative Areas 1, 2, and 4 will be up for re election in 2024 For more information, visit sbcountyelec tions com

ment Services assisted Fiscal Services leaders, along with representatives from Superior Grocers, one of the companies donating to the drive, were on hand to assist students with the selection process The end re sult was a lot of smiles and stu dents who are ready for the school year

The board’s President Edgar Montes is up for re election unopposed, while Candidate Evelyn Dominguez is also running unopposed Montes, who is a business owner, is currently serving his third four year consecutive term after being elected in 2010 Dominguez, who is a nurse in Riverside County, will replace Incumbent Dina Walker in area 5 Since being elected in 2014, Walker has served as president, vice president, and clerk for the board of education Candidates who desired to fill the two seats had the opportunity to file documents with the San Bernardino County Registrar of Voters be tween July 18th and August 12th, 2022 Still, no other files were made other than Montes and Dominguez

Speaking of the field, let’s talk what about what will happen on it with the offense It all revolves around the teams star QB Justin Herbert Herbert has broke record after record his first 2 seasons He has shown to have one of the strongest and most accurate arms in all of the NFL He also has shown great improvisation ability and, with his 6’6 236 frame, he’s also shown the ability to get some yardage with his feet while not risking getting injured

Assuming Derwin James gets his extension and plays, he will join Joey Bosa and Asante Samuel Jr as some notable guys who Chargers fans are familiar with to come back and look to contribute But of course, the pickups the defense got was what made headlines around the league

The core group of star players such as Justin Herbert, Kennan Allen, and Austin Ekeler are back for re demption and new stars Khalil Mack and JC Jackson bring what many fans believe are just what the Charg ers need to make a playoff run

However, barring uncontrollable events like injuries, the Chargers look set to get back to the playoffs and possibly even win there, as they look to get Justin Herbert his first playoff appearance of his career

Talks are reportedly moving along well and there’s no hostility like there can be in these contract talk sit uations, but as of August 14th there’s still no agree ment The Chargers must secure their star safety before they touch the field Week 1 against the Raiders

As for the X factors, WR Jalen Guyton’s elite speed goes perfectly with Herbert’s slingshot of an arm, and Joshua Palmer is expected to improve and get more looks this year And of course there’s LT Rashawn Slater who last year was one of the best rookies in his class The of fense looks ready to go, but the defense has been re tooled and looks ready to help win some games

The Bolt Up 2022 2023 campaign is soon to strike in what is an all time level stacked AFC West

After a heart crushing end to last season, the Los Angeles Chargers have returned to the field for the preseason And this season for Bolt Up nation is one of hope and excitement, which fans like me have not felt in a long time

Inland Empire Community Newspapers • August 18, 2022 • Page A3

So let’s dive into everything going on, and what could transpire this season

As for the guys he’s throwing to, they’re elite too Kennan Allen is probably the best route runner in the league and if you call his number, he’s going to get open, and he’s going to make a play The Bolts also managed to resign deep ball threat Mike Williams Williams has an elite ability to make acrobatic catches and can be a viable red zone threat due to all the attention Allen gets As for Herbert’s back field partner, RB Austin Ekeler does the job and then some The versatile Ekeler is one of the best receiving backs in the league while also being able to go for big runs He’s one of the leagues most beloved players and we’re sure to see plenty of air guitar touchdown celebrations from him this year

By Caden Henderson

First off, the Chargers have to reach an agreement on a contract extension with Derwin James before the season starts, and he has to be in uniform Week 1 against the Raiders

Defense has been a problem for the Chargers in re cent history due to injuries exposing a lock of depth However, this year has the potential to be different We’ll start with the returners

First off, Khalil Mack The star LB needs no intro duction Handling Khalil Mack and Joey Bosa is going to give opposing O Line’s nightmares Teams can longer double team Joey Bosa unless they want Mack reigning down pressure every snap on their QB

But there’s more Elite CB JC Jackson joins Samuel Jr and James to lock down opposing teams receiving cores I mean, Jackson’s IG handle is literally “mr int” He’s going to perform how the Chargers will need him to As for the special teams core that is usually always ranked in the bottom half of the league, Dustin Hop kins proved consistent enough last year as the Kicker and we’ll have to see how the Punter situation pans out but, as long as special teams aren’t losing the team the game, they’ll be fine

There’s plenty of star power to win games without having an elite special teams unit

If you are behind a school bus with a stop sign and flashing red lights, drivers need to stop so students can safely get on and off the bus Drivers must remain stopped while the red lights are on Drivers in both directions must stop on any two lane road without a median or a center turn lane

• For parents with children walking or biking to school, teach them safe walking and riding behaviors, such as looking both ways before crossing the street, using sidewalks when available, and crossing at marked crosswalks with stop signs or signals

As students head back to the classroom, the San Bernardino Police Department reminds parents and residents to follow the speed limit and be extra careful driving through school zones “Please drive like it is your child, grandchild, niece or nephew walking or riding their bike to school,” Sgt Jeff Harvey said “Pick up and drop off times can be hectic, but it’s important to be patient and stay safe as children are getting to and from school ”
