Introduction We are moving towards an era of augmentation. Wearables, smart devices, and e-textiles are new solutions for future hybrid generations of interconnected humans and devices. This higher level of interaction is producing new paradigms, raising novel questions, impose different habits, shifting economies and politics. Through technology, we are on the verge of a new perception of our habitats, ecosystems, bodies, social behaviours and interactions.

Wearable technology or fashionable tech refers to all smart devices that can be incorporated into clothes or worn as accessories, or implants on the body. These devices, such as trackers, electronics, software, sensors, are characterized by their ability to exchange data as part of a node system defined as the Internet of Things (IoT). The concept of the IoT refers to the identification and interconnection of all objects through the Internet. This communication protocol bridges digital and physical realm, enhancing novel solutions to emerge in a new mixed scenario. The growing popularity of mobile networks has been one of the most important factors in the development of wearable technology. Thanks to its technological improvement novel solutions from wearable tech are finding disruptive applications. Wearable sensors market impact will reach $2.258 billion by 2022, more than 52.9% from 2016 to 2022. If 50 million wearable devices were shipped in 2015, 125 million units are projected to be by 2019. Same for Smart clothing, moving from 3.3 Million in 2017 to 21.6% more in 2021.

The future of technology resides in the discovery of new interactions. In the next 30 years, anything that is not intensely interactive will be considered broken.

The impact of wearable technology is evident in education, entertainment, communication, navigation, fitness, and according to market trends will have even a larger impact in the healthcare sector, where could find the bigger potential in terms of applications. Emerging technologies will drive the rise of future solutions, combining increasing computing power of smaller and smaller devices to machine learning, artificial intelligence, programmable textiles, IoT.

#3 General course Learning objectives

outcomes

The Postgraduate in Wearables Design focuses on future applications of Wearable Technologies, inviting students to predict new trends, drive novel solutions, reshaping the existing market towards more sustainable models. Our goal is to redefine contemporary devices towards a new generation of cognitive nodes, connecting us to our habitats and ecosystems.

QUESTIONING

How an interconnected world will look like? Which are the new paradigms that cognified devices will produce? What will we sense in the future? Students enrolling in this program learn how to combine data-driven strategies, blurring computational design, electronic devices, rapid prototyping, AR/VR and advanced interaction into the definition of a new creative workflow. This program trains students to master technology, questioning contemporary challenges and projecting novel solutions driven by environmental, social and economic forces reshaping our Society.

-- Question the role of technology in the definition of new paradigms for our Society

PROJECTING -- Predict new market trends from fixed products towards upgrading devices and services -- Envision emerging needs promoting new products -- Drive novel solutions matching challenges from our Industrial partners

DESIGNING -- Develop sustainable solutions to improve our lifestyle -- Define design strategies informed by emerging digital solutions -- Learn advanced computational design skills to define novel applications for wearables

MAKING -- Mass-scaling custom solutions towards a new distributed market model -- Adopt rapid prototyping and digital manufacturing to produce custom solutions -- Remixing and recombining existing products

CONNECTING -- Explore new protocols of communication among habitats, users and devices -- Cognifying devices implementing novel intelligence and hyperconnectivity -- Construct a planetary system connecting all humans and machines into a global matrix

There’s nothing as consequential as a dumb thing made smarter. The advantages from cognifying inert things would be hundreds of times more disruptive than the transformations gained by industrialization.

INTERACTING -- Blur digital and physical through Augmented Realities tracking traces -- Invent novel ways of interaction -- Define new mixed realities, blurring physical and digital

master #6 IED Barcelona

Specific course methodology methodology IED Master school provides continuing training, qualifications, specialisations and the chance to keep up-to-date with all aspects of design, backed by the rich historic and cultural heritage of Italian design. Our strategy for the future is always in tune with social, environmental and financial macrotrends, and we keep a watchful eye on the changes that our cities and surroundings will need to adapt to over the coming 30 years. We believe that we can provide answers and solutions through design. Our teaching here at IED Master is based on the four scenarios we consider crucial to face the needs of the future: design for sustainable development, design for new business models, design for new media and design for people. Our goal is to train professionals who are capable of harnessing cultural values and de-sign tools to not only overcome the challenges of the future, but create and drive innovation. We want our students to take responsibility for their training path and learn how to steer it with the support and tutoring of experts and professionals. At IED Master, we see the School as a laboratory where students can be innovative, enterprising and a driving force; where they are free to experiment and create.

6

Design for Wearables is a multidisciplinary accelerator of ideas and creativity. During this 6 months program, students attend several modules focused on computational design, digital fabrication, advanced interaction, market and dissemination, all organized around the development of one individual research topic. Students develop one research project aligned to a series of challenges and needs proposed by Industrial partners, Research Institutions and wearables experts. Throughout this journey, students are mentored by cutting edge professionals, leveraging their creative and technical skills, forwards new applications and market opportunities.
