VISUAL COMMUNICATION Thesis Projects in Graphic Design 2015
INTRO
The students on the Advanced Diploma in Graphic Design at the IED Barcelona Escola Superior de Disseny produce their final theses in cooperation with renowned companies and organizations. Supervised by the best professionals from their particular area, in their final project the students have the opportunity to apply and complement the knowledge gained during their academic education. This year their projects were concerned with the Royo Textile Group, a textile manufacturer focusing on the denim industry. The company’s proposal was the design of a corporate book, a luxury item containing the company’s philosophy to be presented to its major clients. Various projects were submitted, from which the following stand out:
FABRIC FABRICA FABRICATION student: Luiza Lacava course: Undergraduate Degree in Graphic Design www.luizalacava.com
Fabric, fabrica, fabrication, defabrication, refabrication. This project uses the fabric production process as the narrative discourse for looking at three topics: the link between denim as a material and its use as work clothes. A factory is a space, temple and dynamic in which the raw material is transformed into a product and finally a finished product, an object born of the relationship between Man and machine.
BEYOUND stiudent: Emmy Forss course: Undergraduate Degree in Graphic Design www.emmyforss.com
The idea for the project came from the poet and philosopher Charles Tamkó Sirató’s theory of dimensions applied to the arts. The designer has established a philosophical relationship between the four dimensions (linear, planar, cubic and temporal) and the company’s values and production stages. The final result is three hand-bound copies, containing self-produced graphical elements and text.
HYLE student: Kristhal Samanian course: Undergraduate Degree in Graphic Design www.kristhalsamanian.com
The concept of the book is to use the states of matter (solid, liquid, gas and plasma) to explain the textile production. Images are used that link the states of matter in nature with the transformations that take place in a factory.
MOIRAI Giulia Paradell course: Undergraduate Degree in Graphic Design www.behance.net/giuliaparadell
Moirai represents the textile construction process. It links the Royo Textile company with the Greek myth of the three Fates, the weavers of all human destiny. Clotho, Lachesis and Atropos are responsible preparing the warp with the thread of life for each man, from the first thread to the end of the path. In the project, the goddesses are presented as a metaphor for nature, machine and body, aspects related to the spinning process in the sense of the origin of cloth, the construction of the cloth and its final destination.
