HOME FOR A DAY Home for a day is a story about an happy project. The house for one day or more, for those boys and girls who need it. A shelter to rest in, after a long and painful travel. A secure shelter far away from troubles. An hope to start again. The project is thought to answer in a simple and functional way at the needs of the humanitarian organization INTERSOS. Home for a day turns an abandoned school into reception centre for underage immigrants, that first of all is an house, at least for one day. A roof over the head with respect to the spaces of each one. The development of the project starts from some fundamental concepts: the first, the basics for a simple and functional renovation; the original composition of furnitures that shape and divide the space without lifting walls or closing the doors, designed thinking outside the box; a window on the world to look through, look over, a small chink to look at the others; the colors of the simple and free game that reminds the home; “Little important things to remember.

THE BASICS

8

The most representative environment of the project is the common area composed of a variety of shelves of different sizes, which also serve as dividers. Inside the common area there are a small chill- out and a computer areas. The common area is separated from the kitchen by a structure of steel and glass. In the basement there are the locker rooms, the showers, a laundry and a cloister. In the firts floor there are the bedrooms. The masonry and the doors were replaced by wardrobers, to save the space in a funcional way. Finally there is a workshop room that can be changed depending on the needs.

“THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX!

12

The main idea is born thanks to the partnership between INTERSOS and Ikea. We choosed the Kallax shelf; we transformed it, we changed its function and adapted it on our project idea: creating versatile spaces, without barriers. The kallax is a shelf of particle wood; we upholstered it with pannels of MDF, 1 cm thick, and raised it from the floor with small steel brackets. Another module is the modular wardrobe Pax, that forms the entrance of the bedrooms, in different compositions. The workshop room is another example of versatility of furniture: this room indeed can be composed and recomposed in different ways, simply moving the furniture.

“A WINDOW ON THE WORLD

16

The kallax has many functions, from structural ones, like the seat in the chill out area or the counter of the dining hall, to conceptual ones. A wall composed by kallax allows to divide the space in a versatile way, change the position and find out new spaces according to the needs. But this wall is designed in order to avoid isolation, to rispect the living spaces of each one, and support the communication between the guests. The shelf can be filled with random objects, but also it can be left blank to enhance the function of window between the spaces and the people, or to improve the control of the guys.

LITTLE IMPORTANT THINGS

20

“Little important things is a kind dictonary on the wall. These drawings are made of pre- spaced stickers on the walls, with captions in Italian, English, French and Arabic. The drawings are separated according to the room they are in: for example, in the entrance of the kitchen there are informations about food.

CINEFORUM

Cinemforum is an idea of sharing. The main ideas are: the sharing of all spaces of the home and the pleasure of being together. The stairs are the core of the project. They were designed as a place to be together, they were created to allow, not only the family, but the friends too, to spend a few moments together in the comfort of the house. Its structure born indeed to use the stairs also like seats for every occasion. Another important point of the project is the distribution of the rooms in the first floor. The bedrooms are adjoining rooms, where the guys can live in harmony and respect of the spaces.
