UNCLOAKED The “before and after” of Little Red’s tale Model: Sara Fanfani Stylist/Makeup: Tommaso Del Vecchio, Robert Tompkins, Giulia Gori, Michelle Buckley, Alice Fahrer, Yang song Photographer: Francesco Francaviglia
Our shoot is divided into two key looks, representing the ‘beforeand-after’ of Little Red’s tale. At first, she’s the ingenue. She is not swamped by the responsibilities of adulthood, yet is wanting a sense of ‘freedom’ and independence. She is naive and therefore unaware of the freedom we already possess – the ability to just be – to enjoy the little things in our small, sheltered (cloaked) worlds.

3 Sometimes it feels like being a kid is just a long countdown to becoming a grown-up. You can do all your own shopping, live out of home, answer to no-one but yourself... so what’s stopping you, other than a little number that according to the law makes you a child? Why aren’t you FREE? Unfortunately, adulthood is not so clear-cut. The day you turn 18 is not the day when you are handed the manual on how to be an grown-up, with all the benefits and responsibilities that the title implies. Every day, we’re overwhelmed by a myriad of voices telling us which path to follow into adulthood. But ultimately, the kind of person we become boils down to our own choices, how we decide to handle all the crap that life throws at us. This was the kind of adventure we wanted to create in our photoshoot.
We wanted to use the shoot to explore some hot-button social issues - like self-empowerment, and social corruption - through the lens of the familiar fairytale, Little Red Riding Hood. Taking inspiration from “geek-star” bloggers such as Tavi Gevinson, and magazines such as Yen and Frankie, we moved away from literal interpretations of the tale, and towards creating a more conceptual style. More than just her literal journey through the woods, we envisioned Little Red Riding Hood’s emotional journey through adolescence and into adulthood, told with fashion.

4 Our second look sees a change in theme, a transition from innocence to corruption – the influence of the world upon us as we grow older. Darker tones and a more mature look are the focus of these images. This is to signify the shift from innocence to self-empowerment, and becoming aware of the corrupt outside world. We present a much stronger character; she is now ‘uncloaked’, no longer protected by her youth and naivety. Little Red Riding Hood is forced to grow up and make her own path through the world. Interestingly, as we probed deeper into the conceptual side of the shoot, we found ourselves drawing parallels between Little Red Riding Hood’s story and our own. When you think about it, it’s very much a tale about growing up and becoming more world-wise. As she matures, she learns from her experiences and becomes more sure of herself – something we’ve done plenty of over the course of the shoot.
