Innovative wireless technologies for real-time rotational molding processes optimiztion

Abstract: This work reports the development and evaluation of a system based in recently developed wirelesstechnologies, for application to rotational molding processes optimization. To study and improve this process, where a mold is bi-axially rotated inside an oven, telemetry measuring technologies are required. The approach selected uses technology developed for sensor networks, and thermocouples as transducer elements. A system was designed for wireless data transmission from the rotating mold in the interior of the oven to an external base station. The mold is subjected to extreme temperatures during the process that can degrade the electronic components. To avoid this, a casing was designed with high-efficiency super-insulating materials to protect the system. The design of the electronic system is revised, and results of experimental tests carried out in a rotational molding machine are shown. The system showed a good performance and the temperature of the electronic components did not get higher than critical values. With this solution it is possible to measure the temperatures of the process. The information recorded adequately reflected the main thermal characteristics with valuable information for process optimization. This information can be used to optimize the process and improve the quality of the manufactured products.
