PAHIYOM: Pagngiti kasabay nang paghilom

By Jolly Jelly

Nabalot ako ng dilim at mag-iisa Salamat sa’yo, na sa akin ay sumama saan man pumunta Palagiang pagngiti dahil sa pag-ibig mon g ipinapadama Listening The clock ticks at 12am The sound of the keyboard is still clear, trying to get busy Everyone is silently and peacefully breathing Yet the loudest sound is her heartbeat

Whispering Her mind whispers to shut down The bed whispered for her to lie down Yet she knows, the whisper of the ghost in the moonlight Is keeping her awake

Mystery She’s afraid to close her eyes She doesn’t want to embrace her bed Sleeping is not a comfort anymore Staying awake will keep her safe

Touch Time stops at 3am “Is he deeply asleep?” “Will I be able to sleep peacefully now?” She’s tired, yet afraid to feel the touch of those rude hands

Anxiousness The moment she sleeps; her body will not be hers It will be explored silently by those rude hands The moment she closes her eyes; she’s afraid to open it again Afraid to confirm the face owning the hands she disgusts

Pray To the God and souls of each fool night “I don’t want to be wounded” “I don’t want to be bruised” “I don’t want him to be my bruise”

Overdose

by Pasistang Ipis

Swallow all the pain, Swallow all the hatred, Swallow all the anger, Swallow all the frustrations, Swallow all your emotions.

Push it in you. Deep in your soul. Push it in your darkest part of

mind. Where memories are gone, Emotions are numb, And the heart stops still. Where light becomes dim, And hope becomes lost. Let it out. Bubbles of your agony, Bubbles of shouts deep hidden, Bubbles of your unsaid feelings, Bubbles of your gasps, Bubbles of the cries of unheard helps, Bubbles of your exasperations and desperations. Waiting to pop, Waiting to explode.

Now you are free, From all your troubles, From all your horrors, From what scares you,

From what hurts you, From all that is left unsaid,

From your body.

As your soul escape,

In your overdose death.

HALINGHING NI MAWI

(inspired by marawi victims ) By Louraine

Aurora Borealis

By Agawiham

Staring at the night sky, stars are visible, twinkling so bright and suddenly, an epiphany hits your mind. The universe is infinite it makes us small but, we have the brightest light.

Closing your eyes as you feel the breeze touches your skin, bothered by something you’ve realized before, memories are flashing vividly as you try to picture each thoughts of “what could’ve been” and “what if”.

But in that very moment, you decided to love yourself, and an Aurora Borealis is seen— a phenomenon that is truly magnificent.

Not needing a telescope, the colors you exclude is more than black and white you are your own northern lights, displaying an ethereal sight.

Quota #23: I am a Prisoner JailGuarded by a Job

By Makatang Bulakenyo

The year was 2019 when I have decided to go behind bars…

My goal in life was to be free: One (1) month after the march on way to the 64th commencement exercises, my body was composed of pounds per square inch, my brain would like to press the button of self-destruct on my heart, there are a lot of whispers from the outer left to the inner right of the street, I was torn in between the roads like a stray cat waiting for a shelter or a near-missed death, I have nine (9) lives anyway…

As I continued walking on the straight white broken lines at the middle of the roadway, I accidentally bumped into a police mobile. Instead of asking the nearby people on who my owner was, or direct me rather into the nearest animal shelter welfare, they grabbed me on my nape to felt the comfort and so I did rely to what will happen next…

I woke up lying on a hard bed, there are a lot of clamors coming from different angles of a four equal sided room. This small space was receiving a microscopic amount of light; it was also surrounded by cold rusty railings. I sat for a while then asked the mortals within reach…

I asked if the accommodation was free, if we’re going to pay for the food or the utilities; he then answered “No!”. I burst into tears, this is what I want! This was my target in the first place; my goal was to be free.

Instead of filing for a not guilty plea, I surrendered to them and admitted all the accusations against me; I signed the contract. I am the protagonist of my own story but decided to be the antagonist among all. As the day goes by, we were tasked to do such chores we’re not used to; and so then I’ve realized that we are paying the free accommodations with our own sweat and blood.

No one forced me to be here, it was my willingness that blinded my eyes to see the reality of life.

I just wanted to be free at first, I went down the mountain to search for the future in the city. I have a curly hair, my complexion was black, and my nose was flat. I am just a simple civilian trying hard to pave a way changing my community at least competitive with other ethnic groups.

I was drugged and mandated to just follow all their instructions, there are a lot of mislead ideas on what really happened that day. It was true that I was walking on the road when some by-standers tried to inject me a liquid solution and put something in my pocket and in my bag.

I passed out for a while and tried to crawl, that was the time when I bumped into a police mobile. They immediately summoned me to the authority without further investigations. Little did I know that it was their job, their way of living in free was to imprisoned innocent people. They have this so called “quota”, to reach the top, to garner fame, and to have a name.

I am one of the countless individuals dying inside the jail due to inhumane job of many.

By Julie Ann Villanueva and Kriz Louraine Samillano

Against the Odds of the New Normal”.
