The Sir Peter Ustinov Television Scriptwriting Award is designed to motivate novice writers worldwide, and offer them the recognition and encouragement that might lead to a successful career in television scriptwriting. Entrants are asked to create a completed half-hour to onehour English language television drama script.

The 2023 Competition opens in April.

2022 SIR PETER USTINOV TELEVISION SCRIPTWRITING AWARD WINNER: GINA SONG, MISSUNDERWORLD

Gina grew up on film sets as a child extra on Australian TV productions, where she developed a love for storytelling. After graduating from high school in 2017, she began studying in the prestigious screenwriting program at the Victorian College of the Arts. While in university, she worked as a freelance journalist and published articles about the Korean diaspora experience for The New York Times, SBS Voices, Refinery29, and more. Her short film Namesake (2019) won Best Script and Direction at Mudfest Film Festival. She also worked as a script editor for several awardwinning short films, one of which, The Veil (2019), screened at Lift-Off Los Angeles and London.

About Miss Underworld

Gina Song is a Melbourne-based screenwriter, journalist, and development assistant. Her work focuses on combining high-stakes storytelling with a unique voice that draws from her cultural experience as a Korean Australian woman.

A young Korean American pageant queen must juggle the horrors of monster fighting, adulthood, and college after a demon summoning leaves her with supernatural powers. Blending a genre mix of comedy, pulpy horror, and characterdriven story – Miss Underworld combines timeless conventions with a contemporary, diverse take on the horrors of coming-of-age for a new generation. Buffy meets Jennifer’s Body. Faye Moon. At nineteen, she’s a teen pageant queen, high-achieving student, and a freshman at the prestigious Newman College. Like everything else in her life, Faye has a vision for her college years: internships, honor roll, and moving in with her boyfriend, Oliver Zhang.
